Please call to register. Family Connection Luke 4:1-13 In Luke's Gospel, the story of Jesus' temptation in the desert appears just after Jesus' baptism and before Jesus begins his public ministry. We can imagine this as a time of transition, a turning point in Jesus' life. Perhaps we can liken it to one of the important turning points in our own lives: the decision to marry, the birth of a child, the acceptance of a new job, or the decision to move to a new home. After the moment of decision, having reached the point of no return, we sometimes begin to wonder if we are prepared and ready for the task before us. Turning points can be times of doubt and insecurity. Jesus' response to the temptations of the devil offers an example for responding in faith when our doubts and insecurities tempt us to distrust God's sufficiency. Jesus rebukes the devil by quoting Scripture. Each citation is an affirmation of trust in God. We learn to trust in big things by practicing trust in little things. Our Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving invite us to trust God in these small ways. They remind us that God will suffice for us. They prepare us to trust in God in all things, especially in moments of doubt and uncertainty. As a family, talk about ways in which trust has been built among members of the family. Observe how being trustworthy in small matters enables us to trust one another in more important matters. Offer specific examples if possible (e.g., children who establish their responsibility in household tasks can be granted greater independence and freedom to choose how they perform these tasks). Today's Gospel shows us how Jesus trusted God in all things. Read aloud today's Gospel, Luke 4:1-13. Discuss how Jesus showed his trust in God when he resisted the devil's temptations. Invite family members to name times when they have trusted God in matters small or large. Write a family prayer together. You might write the prayer so that each line begins with a letter in the word trust. Pray this prayer together. Colorectal Cancer Awareness Events- Participants may receive free take home test. We look forward to seeing you there. St. Anthony Summer Mission Trip--We are looking for jobs to complete for parishioners! The summer high school mission team is looking to fundraise for their upcoming Mission trip to Topeka, Kansas. They are looking for some odds and ends jobs to complete in order to help cover the costs of the trip. Sacrament of Marriage: Please contact St. Anthony s office ( ) at least 9 months before your anticipated wedding date to begin your spiritual preparation. One or both persons must be registered and actively living their faith at St. Mary s Church for at least 6 months to celebrate their wedding here. All couples planning to be married at our parishes must attend a Pre-Cana program, Natural Family Planning program and FOCCUS evaluation. For those who were former members here, they must be registered and actively living their faith at the parish where they reside. Sacrament of Baptism: Baptisms are celebrated during Mass on Saturdays & Sundays (not during Lent or Advent). A family must be registered & actively living their faith at St. Mary s Church for 6 months to assure faith will be shared with the new born child. Godparents must also be registered in a Catholic parish or other Christian church & actively living their faith. A Baptism Class is held and is required for all parents. Weekly Offering.2/24/ _ Adults Kids Loose Catholic Times Total...$ Spring Training is always an exciting time for baseball fans. A time filled with hope and expectation as fans see their new team and dream of a great season. Spring Training is that first opportunity to see the new free agents or players acquired by trades. It is also the opportunity to see what potential minor leaguers look like the next franchise players. Spring Training is also an exciting time even for non-baseball fans because it means winter is almost gone! Something that I have always found interesting about Spring Training is how major leaguers return to the basics. The best baseball players in the world are seen practicing fielding bunts and getting bunts down. The best of the best are seen practicing the basics of fielding and throwing, trying to hone their craft. The best hitters are back practicing their timing and working on their weaknesses as hitters. The best of the best return to the basics because they know greatness is built upon the fundamentals. The fundamentals must continually be mastered before they move on to more difficult tasks. The same is true in the spiritual life. Jesus Christ and His Church know this reality and invite Christians back to the basics every Lent. Every Lent is like spring training where we return to the basics of faith in Christ. Every gospel over the next few Sundays will touch upon some fundamental of faith including Ash Wednesday which touches upon prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, staple disciplines for a healthy spiritual life. A great opportunity that we have to return to basics, this Lent is our Parish Mission by Deacon Joel and Lisa Schmidt. They will speak to us about the basic tenet of faith that we are created in the Image and Likeness of God. They will help explore this reality more fully so we can dive deeper into the truth of who am I in God s eyes. Along with the basic of identity, Deacon Joel and Lisa will also look at the importance of relationships in our lives and where we might need healing in them. And finally, they will cover the essential basic of faith that Christ has a Mission for each one of us. Each evening promises to be an excellent opportunity for us as a faith community to hone in again on the basics of faith so that we can progress further in the spiritual life. In Christ s Mercy. Fr. Mark Tracy Lenten Regulations 1. ABSTINENCE Everyone 14 years of age and over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. FAST Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 is required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is permitted. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength may be taken according to each person s needs, but together these two should not equal another full meal. Women s Retreat St. Anthony Church is hosting a Women s retreat on Saturday, March 23rd beginning with Mass at 8:30am. Marlene Mulford will be our speaker for the day. Marlene is retired from the Springfield Diocese after 25 years of service. Most recently, she was the Directory of Communications. A graduate of the Catholic Spiritual Mentorship Program, she spiritually mentors women. To register, please call the parish office at The cost for the day will be $10.
