We also see the ways that God uses the gifts he gave us to transform us into new people, the agents through whom God will lead others to Jesus and to his kingdom. Let's consider the person Jesus chose to be a leader among the disciples and whom he sent to catch people. Based on the evidence found in Scripture, we can imagine what Peter must have been like: Peter seems unafraid to speak his mind, yet he is also able to take direction. In today's Gospel, Simon Peter lowers his nets as Jesus commands, but not before reminding Jesus that he and his partners have been fishing all night and haven't caught anything. Peter is a leader, a spokesperson for others. Today's Gospel suggests that Simon Peter was a leader in his fishing business. When Simon Peter chooses to follow Jesus, others become Jesus' disciple as well. Peter's personality and charisma seem to make him the center of attention; yet Peter learned to be transparent, to let others see Jesus through him. Peter possesses a dynamic and open relationship with Jesus. Peter often approaches Jesus and speaks what is in his heart. Gather as a family and spend some time imagining the person of Simon Peter. Encourage family members to tell details about Simon Peter that they recall from Scripture. Consider these questions: Is Peter someone you would like to be friends with? Why or why not? Do you consider Peter a good leader? Why or why not? Read aloud today's Gospel, Luke 5:1-11. Jesus chose Simon Peter to be the leader of the disciples. Peter continued to be a leader in the early Christian community; we continue to speak of Peter's leadership when we call the pope the successor of Peter. Discuss the role of the papacy and of other leaders in the Church. In what ways do we participate in the mission of the Church by leading people to Christ ( catching people )? Pray for those who lead the Church. St. Anthony Grade School is having an open house on Wednesday, February 13th for all incoming preschoolers, kindergartners, and interested families. The open house is from 4:00-7:00pm and includes a tour of the building and classrooms. St. Anthony Summer Mission Trip--We are looking for jobs to complete for parishioners! The summer high school mission team is looking to fundraise for their upcoming Mission trip to Topeka, Kansas. They are looking for some odds and ends jobs to complete in order to help cover the costs of the trip. Sacrament of Marriage: Please contact St. Anthony s office ( ) at least 9 months before your anticipated wedding date to begin your spiritual preparation. One or both persons must be registered and actively living their faith at St. Mary s Church for at least 6 months to celebrate their wedding here. All couples planning to be married at our parishes must attend a Pre-Cana program, Natural Family Planning program and FOCCUS evaluation. For those who were former members here, they must be registered and actively living their faith at the parish where they reside. Sacrament of Baptism: Baptisms are celebrated during Mass on Saturdays & Sundays (not during Lent or Advent). A family must be registered & actively living their faith at St. Mary s Church for 6 months to assure faith will be shared with the new born child. Godparents must also be registered in a Catholic parish or other Christian church & actively living their faith. A Baptism Class is held and is required for all parents. Our progress has reached a stand still. Please consider giving if you have not done so. Passing On the Flame of Faith One of my favorite moments every year is the Easter Vigil. The church is pitch dark and eerie quiet. The words of salvation are announced, and the Easter Candle is marked with the nails of the Cross. The Easter Candle then like a Victory torch is carried into the dark church proclaiming the Victory of Christ Jesus over sin and death. The triumph of his light, his glorious resurrection, literally begins to dispel the darkness from the Church. Then the light spreads. The victory spreads as other candles are lit from the Easter Candle. The glorious and triumphant light of Christ s victory is passed on from person to person. And the darkness is dispersed. This awe-striking moment each year sums up beautifully what St. Paul says today in the second reading I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received. St. Paul passed on the tradition that he received. He handed on the good news of the Victory of Christ Jesus. That Jesus died in accordance with the Scriptures, offering the perfect sacrifice of love and obedience that takes away the sins of the world. And death could not contain him! Jesus rose in his glorified body in accordance with the Scriptures. He said he would rise, and he did! But then the Risen and Glorified Christ appeared to Mary Magdalene. He also appeared to Peter and the other apostles. Finally, we hear today that he appeared to St. Paul and 500 witnesses. The Resurrection of Christ Jesus and his glorified body is not some made up fairy tale or myth. No, the Resurrection of Jesus is based on historical facts and evidence including these eye-witnesses. It is from the witness of this awe-striking fact that the faith began to spread and the Church that Christ instituted began to flourish. And this is our call as well, to pass on the faith. Not because I am forced to, but I desire to pass on this unbelievable story. Because this Person, Jesus Christ, changed my life and can help transform other lives by the power of His Cross and Resurrection. And what better aspect of our lives can we pass on to our family and friends? We pass on so many traditions and stories that we are passionate about. This is why I love the Easter Vigil. Slowly the light spreads, and the darkness is dispersed as we pass on the flame of faith! In Christ s Mercy, Fr.
