1 JULY 16, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reflecting on God s Word Living God s Word Lord, give us the rest only you can give when we feel burdened by life s labors and sorrows. Open our hearts so that we learn from you to seek and accept the yoke that is easy. Give us the strength to help others with the burdens that weigh them down. Readings for the Week Monday: Ex 1:8-14, 22; Ps 124:1b-8; Mt 10:34 11:1 Tuesday: Ex 2:1-15a; Ps 69:3, 14, 30-31, 33-34; Mt 11:20-24 Wednesday: Ex 3:1-6, 9-12; Ps 103:1b-4, 6-7; Mt 11:25-27 Thursday: Ex 3:13-20; Ps 105:1, 5, 8-9, 24-27; Mt 11:28-30 Friday: Ex 11:10 12:14; Ps 116:12-13, 15, 16bc, 17-18; Mt 12:1-8 Saturday: Ex 12:37-42; Ps 136:1, 23-24, 10-15; Jn 20:1-2, Sunday: Wis 12:13, 16-19; Ps 86:5-6, 9-10, 15-16; Rom 8:26-27; Mt 13:24-43 [24-30] When you think of a king coming before his people, the image of someone riding on a donkey does not come to mind. If the Lone Ranger had Silver and Roy Rogers had Trigger, a similar white stallion would seem most fitting for a king. Not an ass, even a purebred one. But this image from the prophet Zechariah is one that must have planted itself in the imagination of Jesus, for that is how he made his great entrance into Jerusalem and was greeted as the Messiah. It was not the entrance of a powerful warrior, but of a gentle king whose rule would bring peace to the nations. I have sometimes regretted the loss of St. Christopher from the calendar of saints. That legendary saint, whose name means Christ-bearer, signaled that the risen Lord had now chosen to be carried by his disciples. We bear him in our bodies, minds, and hearts. We bring him to the world when we work to bring peace and healing and knowledge of the Father. This necessitates being willing to take on the yoke of Jesus. I remember once hearing that the yokes Jesus made in the carpenter shop under Joseph s guidance rode easily on the shoulders of the animals, distributing evenly the weight they pulled. The yoke Jesus offers us is his teaching about the kingdom of heaven and how to live in it while in the world. This means putting on his attitude and spirit of attentive listening for the will of the Father home schooling in the best sense. James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Copyright 2013, World Library Publications. Fruit of the Word The seed is the word of God. The agricultural metaphors in all of today s readings give richness to the message that the word of God, cultivated in our hearts, bears much fruit in our lives. Creation itself awaits the redemption of all, even as our bodies await the resurrection. Just as we will rejoice in the fulfillment of God s word, so will all of creation sing for joy in the Reign of God. The word of God is effective and holy; it brings about exactly what it says. It is not futile or empty, but rich in meaning for those who hear and are healed. Those who hear the word of God and keep it will, with all creation, bear much fruit and sing for joy. Copyright J. S. JOURNEY INTO JOY An ongoing series in the manner of St. Ignatius of Loyola...so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete In all the days of our lives is Christ, present and active. In the trivial, tremendous, inconsequential, significant, tragic, exciting, ordinary and extraordinary moments of our lives there is a joy that inclines us, incites us, invites us, draws us on. Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness, and loneliness. With Christ joy is constantly born anew (Pope Francis). Christ is constantly inviting us to respond to his presence, to the power of his transforming love. Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest learn from me and you wil find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light (Matthew 11:29). With great confidence we can come to experience a direct, personal relationship with Christ in a manner beyond all our thoughts and imaginings. Learn to experience a deeply felt personal sense of Christ s presence and unconditional love in your life. He desires passionately to give this experience to all who seek it. Current Offering Deacon Auld will offer Meeting Christ in Prayer, a 10-week program of one-hour group meetings with materials for daily prayer and reflection. The program begins on September 10. Sessions take place at Santa Maria del Popolo Parish in the Parish Center meeting room after the 7:30 Sunday Mass, and in room 110 beneath the church after the 10:30 Sunday Mass. The program is not at all complex, but consists of fairly simple and straightforward ways of praying, reflecting and thinking about things. It is not for some group of spiritually elite persons, but is for each and every one of us! Previous groups have come to experience the joy of the nearness and graciousness of Christ in their daily lives. 7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer Like all of Jesus parables, the Parable of the Sower and the Seed can be exam- ined and applied in many different ways. While Jesus was most likely thinking of the work and results of proclaiming the Kingdom, we can also ask ourselves a number of personal questions suggested by this parable: Are we sowing any Kingdom seeds ourselves? Are we and our lives properly serv- ing as seeds for the Kingdom? What kind of soil are we? Shallow and rocky? Or deep and fertile? What sort of a harvest are we? Weeds or thorns? Or wheat? The list can go on and on. And, in truth, each of us is probably some combination of the positive and negative images embedded in this parable. Yet another way of applying this parable was suggested by my good friend Fr. Emil D Cruz, S.J, in a talk he gave a number of years ago. Entitled Coping with the Weeds Among the Wheat, Fr. Emil discussed how we can attain internal peace of mind and heart only by leading authentic lives that appropriately deal with the good and evil forces that work within us. It does not take much observation or knowledge to realize that good and evil forces are at work in the world. A casual glance at a newspaper or TV will confirm this in an instant. But much more wisdom, insight and honesty are required to admit that there are good and evil influences ( spirits ) operating within each of us. How do we distinguish the good from the evil? Desires and temptations are part of our everyday experience. They are the motivating factors that energize us and move us to act. How do we differentiate between those that are in accordance with God s plan for us and those and those that run counter to what God wants for us? How do we come to know ourselves better through this regular examination of the influences that pull us in opposite directions? This requires prayer, reflection, formation, and patient discernment sometimes with the help of someone else. Referring to the part of the Parable of the Sower and the Seed where Jesus tells his Apostles not to uproot the weeds but allow them to grow alongside the wheat till harvest time, Fr. Emil observed that the growth of the weeds is a necessary stage of our spiritual growth. Indeed, without a proper awareness of our shadows, we will be deficient Christians, ignorant of our sources of energy, devoid of compassion for those who are suffering or struggling, and impatient with the progress of others (and ourselves) for not measuring up to certain expectations we have. So let us find a lesson or two from today s parable to take to heart, recognizing our strengths and weaknesses, the wheat and the weeds. May we sow and cultivate a bumper crop of wheat. And may we be more patient and compassionate in dealing with the inevitable weeds we find. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the Parish Office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com. 10 15th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Seeds of a Fruitful Harvest In a garden shop I looked through packets of seeds. I came across some morning glories. Morning glories! I wondered. I didn t know people actually planted them! I thought they just wildly wrapped around my flowers, trees, shrubs, corn stalks, tomato plants, and delicate herbs. Their roots are easy enough to pull from the ground, but you can get dizzy trying to unwrap them from hundreds of stems. They threaten to suffocate and choke out everything that grows. cannot go deep enough. Thorns and weeds (I m sure they were morning glories!) may come and choke out the seed s growth. Only if the seed falls on good soil can it take hold and mature into a fruitful harvest. Comment There is an analogy made between the earth and us. Just as God waters the earth to make things grow, we are watered by God s Word and grow in living out the Word s meaning. God has a purpose for the words that are sent to us. According to God s plan, we will achieve the purpose of that word. The fruit of God s harvest is divine in human beings God s everlasting love. Paul compares the work of the harvest to a mother s labor during childbirth. The work is hard and often painful, but the end result is the joy of holding her new baby. Similarly it takes hard work to make a crop healthy for harvest, but the conclusion is a great yield. In the parable, Jesus describes the soil onto which the seed may fall. If it falls on the hardened path, birds may come and eat it because it is not embedded in the soil. Or it may land on rock, which has very little soil and roots Reflection We are the soil in which God plants the seeds. Are we fertile soil or does our sinfulness or righteousness make us thorny? Are we filled with weeds of distraction and busy-ness? Paul points us in the direction of hope. His letters to the early Church tell us that our great hope and salvation rests in Christ who died for us. It is Christ who removed the thorns of sin for us. We need to be attentive to the care of our soil. Sometimes we can do our own gardening. Other times we need the help of a gardener. And still other times, we offer nutrients to others trying to maintain a fertile soil. We are a community of believers. We all need one another s help to ensure good soil. Like the rain mentioned in Isaiah, which will not return to God until it has watered the earth, God s word will not return to God void. This means it falls on fertile soil. We already know about the thorns of sin and the weeds of distraction. How will we prepare the soil today for God s word? What action have we put off that we now must do in order for God s word to land gently on us and move us to action? Copyright 2004, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
