1 ASUGUST 26, ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Living God's Word Jesus, you came from the Father and returned to the Father and remain ever near the Father's heart. You remain the Father's Word of love to us, the Word of the Father's commitment to us; draw us into being "Amen" as you were also "Amen" to the Father's will. Amen. And the people answered: Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods, going on to name the deeds the Lord had done for them (Joshua 24:15, 16). Centuries later, after hearing Jesus call himself bread to be eaten, descendants of those at Shechem said: This saying is hard; who can accept it? And they no longer accompanied him. Jesus then asked the Twelve if they would leave too. Simon answered for all: We have come to believe and are convinced you are the Holy One of God (John 6:60, 66, 69). Our response is a simple but weighty Amen (meaning So be it ). When the consecrated host is held up, accompanied by The Body of Christ, and the cup offered with The Blood of Christ, we are asked to put our faith on the line and say, Amen. Has familiarity bred contentment? Are we so used to this mystery that we rarely have a sense of awe or wonder? The first act of faith is believing that God is present in things as ordinary as this bread and wine. We believe that the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ. What is the change in us that should accompany receiving them? But of such stuff dreams are made God s dream of a family, loving daughters and sons, gathered around a table to say Amen, then to live Communion in a world of broken bodies, shed blood, wounded hearts, and crushed spirits. When we say Amen to this mystery, who knows what might happen? James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Copyright 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. 3 Office of the Archbishop 835 North Rush Street Chicago, IL archchicago.org August 17, 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters, Anger, shock, grief, shame. What other words can we summon to describe the experience of learning about the devastating revelations of sexual abuse and the failures of bishops to safeguard the children entrusted to their care published in the Pennsylvania grand jury report, released Tuesday? This catalogue of horrors comes on the heels of news accounts of deeply disturbing sexual-abuse and harassment allegations against Archbishop Theodore McCarrick, who recently resigned from the College of Cardinals. And yet whatever words we may use to describe the anguish of reading about these heinous acts, they can never capture the reality of suffering endured by victims of sexual abuse, suffering compounded by the woeful responses of bishops who failed to protect the people they were ordained to serve. As the Holy See put it in its August 16 statement on the grand jury report: The church must learn hard lessons from its past, and there should be accountability for both abusers and those who permitted abuse to occur. I know that many of you are asking: How could this be happening again? Didn t the U.S. bishops address this crisis sixteen years ago when they met in Dallas? What are they doing now, and why should we trust that this time they will do the right thing? These are precisely the questions that ought to be asked. As a former chair of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People, I have asked them myself. And sorrow, disgust, outrage these are righteous feelings, the stirrings of the conscience of a people scandalized by the terrible reality that too many of the men who promised to protect their children, and strengthen their faith, have been responsible for wounding both. We know this not only because of the admirable work of the many members of the news media who played an essential role in bringing this crisis into the light. Now, we have been made to face these scandals first and foremost by the courage of victim-survivors the men and woman who found the strength, even when doing so meant suffering again unimaginable pain, to come forward and seek justice from an institution that grievously failed them. What are we bishops doing now to ensure that those failures are not repeated? Today, USCCB President Cardinal Daniel DiNardo announced on behalf of all the bishops that our conference will launch a thorough investigation of the allegations against Archbishop McCarrick; that it will establish new ways in which people can report complaints against bishops; and that it will advocate for more effective resolution of such allegations. The USCCB will invite the Holy See to investigate the McCarrick case, in concert with a predominantly lay group of experts. The bishops will also update our 2002 Statement of Episcopal Commitment by which the bishops pledged to follow a procedure for reporting allegations of sexual abuse of minors by a bishop. This document needs revision to clarify how victims can report abuse of minors or other misconduct by bishops, as well as develop third-party reporting systems, many of which are already being looked at today. Of course, bishops are not exempt from following standards of behavior. Our own Cardinal Joseph Bernardin provided a strong example, when he chose to step aside after he was accused of abuse a charge that was eventually retracted. The USCCB will also press for procedures that will make is easier to resolve complaints against bishops in a timely, fair, and transparent manner. As Cardinal DiNardo explained, all this will be conducted with proper independence, sufficient authority, and substantial leadership by laity. This call for lay oversight of the investigation, as much as the scandal itself, shows the need for systemic change in the way we order church life. The clericalist mindset, responsible for so much of the scandal, must be purged from church life. As Pope Francis has urged, we need to remember that it is our baptism that unites us. We as a church must reflect more deeply on what we share in common, rather than what distinguishes us. The abuses contained in the Pennsylvania grand jury report are, as you know, appallingly familiar. And while it is true that the vast majority of abuses contained in that report occurred decades ago, that is of no comfort to victims, nor should it be to any of us. We cannot say this enough: the abuses should never have happened, and (Continued on page 4)

4 (Continued from page 3) no one should have acted in ways that enabled them. This is why, following the 2002 wave of scandals, the USCCB adopted policies designed to protect young people from abusers. We instituted a zero-tolerance policy which holds that even one instance of child sexual abuse would bar someone from the priesthood forever. The Archdiocese of Chicago has implemented these policies and even done more. 1. We established an independent lay-majority review board to consider allegations against clergy and make recommendations to the bishops. 2. We refer all allegations of abuse to civil authorities. 3. We require diocesan employees and volunteers to undergo background checks. 4. We mandate that all diocesan employees and volunteers undergo safe-environment training to help them identify predatory behavior and understand avenues of reporting. And we required that children be taught how to recognize, resist and report abuse. 5. We undergo an annual audit to measure compliance with these policies, which every year has found the Archdiocese of Chicago compliant. Since 2002, hundreds of thousands of our people in dioceses across the United States have undergone safe -environment training. In many ways we can say that the policies of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, which established procedures for addressing allegations of sexual abuse of minors by clergy, have been successful. According to the Pennsylvania grand jury report, for example, just two of the 300 priests named in the text were accused within the past decade, and both were reported to civil authorities. This excuses nothing, and we can never become complacent about our responsibility to protect children and adults from abuse and harassment, but it does say something about the effects of our post-2002 policies. Here in the Archdiocese of Chicago, we have been following procedures that were first established by Cardinal Bernardin in 1992, following revelations of clergy abuse that came to light during that period. In addition to what the Charter calls for, we offer payment for counseling or other assistance to anyone who comes to us with allegations even before attempting to establish the credibility of the claim. After any civil investigation has concluded, we conduct our own inquiry into allegations against priests, and our majority-lay review board considers the case and makes a recommendation to me about whether the accused should remain in ministry. One of the most important things Cardinal Bernardin did was to establish a regular meeting of everyone who might be called in to consider a case of sexual abuse, whether it involves a minor or an adult. So, to this day, representatives from across the relevant pastoral center offices regularly meet with me to advise me on cases that arise and ways to strengthen our commitments. Of course, no set of procedures is perfect. As the grand jury report illustrates, they are subject to the strengths and weaknesses of those entrusted to carry them out. Closed systems always tend toward self-protection; it is only when we create systems of accountability that we let in purifying light. That s what our practices are designed to do. They exist because we as a church have a grave responsibility to ensure the safety of our people. That is why I encourage anyone who has been victimized to contact our Office of Protection of Children and Youth at or protect.archchicago.org. Anger, shock, grief, shame. There is one other word that we bishops must summon: resolve. We must resolve to face our failures and hold each other accountable. We must resolve to be clear-eyed about what we have done, what we have failed to do, and what remains to be done. We must resolve to live in the light of humility, of repentance, of honesty the light of Christ. As your bishop, I pledge to continue holding firm to that resolve. And I ask for you to pray for all victims of abuse. I also invite you to review what I have written here and make suggestions for improving our safe-environment standards, ever heeding the Second Vatican Council s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, which called on the laity, by reason of the knowledge, competence or outstanding ability which they may enjoy to express their opinion on those things which concern the good of the church. Sincerely yours in Christ, Archbishop of Chicago

5 Deacon Deliberations by Deacon Gary Kupsak Are You Staying or Leaving? In your workplace, at home, in your ministry here at the parish, have you every had the feeling that some of the folks you were talking to were just not buying into what you were suggesting, planning or trying to implement? I certainly have. And even though I tried as best as I could, I could not convince some of them of the benefit of what was being proposed. Although certainly not on the same level, in today s Gospel (John 6: 60-71) Jesus is faced with the same dilemma. Some the disciples, who originally signed on to be part of Christ s earthly ministry, were finding it very difficult to buy into some of the teachings. Those doubters just couldn t believe that this man who was a carpenter, this neighbor who may have helped his earthly father build their table was claiming to be of God, was God. So they stopped following Christ, instead of having faith in the Messiah. Some of the teachings of Jesus the Christ were and are today difficult to follow for mere human beings. In the Gospel, when Jesus, seeing the defections and hearing the grumbling asked the apostles if they too wanted to leave, Peter answered for almost all of them when he said, Master, you have the words of eternal life. In for a penny, in for a pound, so to speak. Eleven of them were there to stay. Have we, in pursuing our lives, in trying to get the most out of life for ourselves and our families, ever thought that what Jesus is asking of us as his disciples is Just not going to happen, and we d rather abandon ship than fight the temptation to not take the easy way out. When we re faced with decisions that the commandments of our Catholic religion quite adequately cover (although they may not be so easy to follow) do we say, Well I m pretty good at following most of the tenants of our faith, so I know God will give me a pass on this one or the other. Do we say, this whole Catholic shtick has been too, too repressive and I know the folks at the Chapel don t have to jump through all these hoops, and then pick up and leave? Or do we say as Peter did, Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. (John 6:68). And then, as difficult as sometimes it may be, fulfill our baptismal promise to live the Gospels, through the high points the low points and all the points in between. Master to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM As summer winds down and kids are heading back to school, St. Mary s Religious Education Program (REP) will also be starting after Labor Day. The faith formation of our children is an ongoing process that begins in kindergarten or first grade and continues until the celebration of confirmation, either as an 8 th grader or perhaps as a high school student. Registration is ongoing and it s important to register your child(ren) so that materials can be ordered and catechists can be secured. Registration forms are available on the parish web site at or in the kiosk in the narthex. If you are new to St. Mary and have not yet registered your family, you can do so by attending our next Welcome Session on Sunday, August 26 at 10:45 or by calling the parish office to make an appointment during the week. Our program is dependent on volunteer catechists who share their love of Christ with the children. If you love working with kids and love sharing your faith, you might find that this ministry is for you. Please contact Sue Matousek at smatous@stmota.org or call me at to further talk about what becoming a catechist entails. Feel free to contact me at the above with any questions or concerns. God bless, Sue Matousek Director of Religious Education Access Favorite Homilies on St. Mary Website By Emma Roberts, Carmel H.S., Class of 2022 Did you ever wish you could to hear our priests homilies again? Good news! Full audio recordings of our weekend homilies can be found on the St. Mary s parish website. This unique feature allows parishioners to re-listen to homilies, gain additional insights, or share the message with a friend or family member. This valuable tool began in July of The Darrell and Susan Harmon family has played a key role in recording the weekly homilies and posting them to our parish website. Teenage daughters Regan and Riley have led this project in recent years. Each weekend, the readings and homily from each Mass are set to record to a laptop. From there, the Harmon family edits the file and sends it to parishioner and website coordinator, Jessica Stoffel, to upload to the parish website. Mr. Harmon stated, I think it is a great way to share homilies/messages with friends and family that may not have had the opportunity to hear a particular homily. I've gone back and re-listened to homilies that spoke to me. How can you access our homilies? Go to our parish website (stmaryfc.org) and select the About Us tab. From there, choose Homily Recordings. You will find recordings archived by date and homilist. The Harmon family will be stepping down from this ministry and new volunteers will soon continue this valuable service. A big thank you to the Harmon family for the gift of your time and talent for the last seven years!

Matthew Earlier this year we had publicized a 6-week series on the Gospel of John at the parish this Fall with Fr. Matthew. Due to Fr. Matt s unexpected reassignment to St. Joseph's College Seminary, we will have to postpone the series for now. The announcement of his appointment caught everyone very much by surprise. Fr. Matthew truly thought he would be here in the Fall to offer this series and is disappointed that we have to cancel for now. He would very much like to share this with us at another time, so we do hope to consider a future date after he makes the transition to his new position. 7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer It is indeed extremely sad and discouraging that we, as the Church, continue to struggle with how to confront and respond to the scandal of child sex abuse. Those who have been so grievously injured need to be cared for, not ignored. The process of purification and healing has been and will continue to be difficult. There is no magic wand that will make this better in a heartbeat. Sadly, I don t believe that the most recent revelations of past abuse and cover-ups will be the last we will hear. But the process of correction and justice demands, as St. Paul says in Ephesians, that sins done in darkness must be exposed in the light. The abuse of children in any form (sexual, physical, emotional, etc.) is a grave evil. So, too, is the indifference and cover-up of abuse by those in authority. There must be no more hesitation in confronting the problems of the past and implementing needed reforms going forward. While much has been done in the United States in the last 15 years, more is needed. And other parts of the world lag far behind. Foot-dragging is not acceptable. Resolute actions must accompany our words. Our vigilance must never flag because this is an issue that never goes away. While divinely instituted, the Church on Earth is comprised of imperfect, sinful human beings. We are afflicted with the same brokenness that is present in the world around us. This is true of the shepherds as well as the sheep. The history of the Church contains many Spirit-filled people and events, but it also contains many sad episodes tainted by horrible sin, of which the current scandal ranks among the darkest. While it is right to expect the Church to live up to the Gospel, we must also recognize that we humans often fall far short and always need to seek the Lord s forgiveness and to convert our ways. This is true in our personal lives and in our communal life, for clergy and laity alike. Thus, we should never project a false sense of moral superiority. You and I belong to the Church not because we are better than anyone else but because we see our own sinfulness and humbly heed Jesus call to repentance and new life, which is a life-long process of conversion. Any time ANY of us behave in a manner inconsistent with the Gospel we make Christ and his teaching less credible to the world. This scandal is a terrible, festering wound in the body of Christ. Sadly, it has driven some members to step away from the Church because of the dismay and betrayal we all feel. The presence of such grave sin in our midst and particularly among our leaders has even led some to have a crisis of faith. When many are dismayed and reject him, Jesus asks the Twelve in today s Gospel, Do you also want to leave? You, or someone you know, may be struggling with that very same question in light of this on-going scandal. But recognize that our faith is built on the person of Jesus Christ and his Gospel, not on human beings or institutions. I believe Simon Peter s answer rings as true today as it did when he spoke it: Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of everlasting life. Even though we may be hurt and betrayed by its human faults and failings, which are our faults, the Church is still the vessel of Christ s words of everlasting life and his sacraments of salvation. The Church is a community of sinners who need God s grace and Join the Music Ministry The Parish Choir supports and amplifies the assembly by singing with them and exercises its own particular gift by singing on its own. Through song, the parish choir acts as an ensemble of evangelization by giving glory to God and adding beauty to liturgical celebrations. The Parish Choir sings at the 9:30am Mass from September through May. Rehearsal is held on Wednesday evenings. Rehearsals resume September 5. The Contemporary Choir provides a contemporary style of worship music for Masses and other parish events. All ages, from youth to seniors, are welcome to be part of the Contemporary Choir and praise God through song. The Contemporary Choir typically sings at the 11:30am Mass on the second Sunday of the month and the 5pm Mass on the third Saturday of the month. Rehearsal is held at 7:30pm on the Thursday evening prior to each Mass. Cantors animate the assembly by leading them in song. Cantors also serve a particular liturgical role when they act as psalmist, singing the responsorial psalm at Mass. Do you play an instrument? Instrumentalists join our ensembles to enhance our celebrations. Find out more by contacting our director of music, Fred Vipond at fvipond@stmota.org, , or through the parish website. Parish Choir Rehearsals resume Wednesday, September 5, 7:00 PM. Contemporary Choir rehearsals are ongoing. who need one another. And despite its brokenness, the Church is the instrument God has built to continue the work of salvation on Earth. Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of everlasting life. The recognition of sin in our midst should lead us to cling more fervently to the hope offered by Christ. The fact that we disciples sin does not diminish the validity of God s gift of salvation, but it does increase our need for it! Let us pray for those who have been abused and victimized. Let us hold accountable and atone for the evil that has been done while we work to prevent its repetition. If you (or someone you know) are struggling with your relationship to the Church, seek out a member of the pastoral staff (myself included) to discuss your concerns. For additional information, contact Linda Zucco zuc5@comcast.net or Taizé Prayer Service Thursday, August 30th, 7PM, St. Mary of Vernon Catholic Church 236 US Hwy 45, Indian Creek, IL All are welcome! Taizé is a meditative common prayer that includes repetitive singing, Scripture, silent meditation, lit candles, dim lights and prayers of petition. The service is about contemplation and being in touch with God. The repetitive songs allow people to continue praying the songs in their heads even after the service is over. Silence is also an important part of the Taizé service. It is in the silence that we hear God speak and invite the Holy Spirit to pray in us. Taizé prayer originated in Taizé, France by a monk named Brother Roger who gathered around him men of different Christian denominations to come together for worship. It has since become a world-wide ecumenical movement. Its peaceful, contemplative nature has drawn millions from all over the world to practice this kind of worship. Join us for a calm, quiet and welcome respite from the busyness of the day. What if each Catholic prayed for ten minutes and read five pages of a great book every day? What if every Catholic did one thing each week to intentionally share God s message with others? Come and discover how four life-changing habits can point you towards discovering incredible possibilities for your life. You will leave the event with a personal plan to help you become the best version of yourself. Please join Dynamic Catholic and speaker Dr. Allen Hunt: Saturday, October 13 th, :00 AM 1:00 PM St. Gilbert Parish Visit DynamicCatholic.com/Grayslake or call for tickets. Who should attend?
