5 ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Office of the Archbishop February 1, 2018 Dear Sisters and Brothers, We are called to love our neighbor. But, like in the Parable of the Good Samaritan, we may find ourselves asking, Who is my neighbor? This Lent, CRS Rice Bowl Catholic Relief Services Lenten faith-in-action program will provide a unique opportunity to connect with neighbors near and far through the global migration campaign, Share the Journey, launched by Pope Francis last fall. With this in mind, I encourage your faith community to actively participate in the CRS Rice Bowl initiative that is quickly approaching. CRS Rice Bowl provides ways in which families, parishes, and school communities can bring Lenten spirituality to life while continuing to connect Catholics in our archdiocese with our brothers and sisters in need around the world. Through resources such as stories, videos, meatless recipes, and lesson plans, we can include migrants and refugees in our Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. During the 2017 Lenten season, the generous donations of parishioners across the Archdiocese of Chicago provided critical support in countries such as India, Mexico, and Ethiopia. Additionally, over $70,000 in local CRS Rice Bowl grants were provided to parishes and organizations working on non-violence and peacemaking efforts, hunger relief, and environmental justice. St Mary of the Annunciation Communications Team STATIONS OF THE CROSS Fridays in Lent, 6:00 PM in the big church Congratulations, Gary Gunther Many people recognize Gary Gunther as one of our most active parishioners. From ushering at Mass to coordinating many of the aspects of our Country Fest, Gary understands what it is to be a volunteer. That enthusiasm extends to the Village of Mundelein as well. Among other village events, you may have seen him helping at the farmer s market, Park on Park, or Mundelein Days. In recognition of his contribution to life in our village, Gary was recently awarded the Debbie Mullen Volunteer of the Year Award at the 25th Annual Awards Dinner of Mundelein Community Connection, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the economic development, historic preservation and healthy community spirit of Mundelein s central business district. Congratulations, Gary, and thank you for illustrating for us how giving of oneself positively impacts the lives of others.

6 St. Mary Youth Ministry Catholic Heart Work Camp ATTENTION! Any high school teen who will enter 9th grade in the fall: Youth Ministry has an opportunity for you! For February, due to scheduling, we will meet the last two Sundays of the month, the 18th and 25th. All high school teens are welcome to join us! The dates for upcoming youth nights are January 28 and February 18 and 25. These nights include a teaching on our faith, discussion, games and snacks. We hope you will join us! Lakeside Recreation Center Bowling Day Come on out and join St. Mary Youth Ministry as we hit the lanes for a fun time of bowling! Included in the cost of $25 is pizza, UNLIMITED POP, shoe rental, and 3 games of bowling! This will be a fantastic event and 7 th 12 th graders are invited to attend. What about your PATIENCE!? Join Youth Ministry as we try to tackle an ESCAPE ROOM. The challenge you face as a group is that you are locked in a room for 60 minutes and you must work your way through a series of clues and puzzles in order to solve the case. We will go on March 3, 2018, starting with pizza and pop at 12:00 PM and then we will leave for the Escape Room and be back at 4:00 PM. 7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer The English word Lent derives from the same root as the word lengthen. While the term is connected to the lengthening of our days with the approach of Spring, it should also refer to the lengthening of our faith and the practice of the Gospel. As the season of Lent finds its origins in the period of preparation for catechumens to receive baptism at Easter, so do we need to hone the practice of our own baptismal commitment. Too often, however, we can limit our efforts to trite and superficial practices that don t touch our hearts or lifestyles. One day a man walked into a bar and ordered three beers. He sat down at a table by himself and proceeded to quaff his brews. This routine was repeated daily. Eventually the bartender asked the man, I hope you don t think I m prying, but why do you order three beers together every day? Oh, said the man, I don t mind ya askin! You see, my two brothers and I used to share a beer after work every day. When the mill closed, we had to leave our town and we headed in different directions to find our fortunes, but we vowed that we would drink three beers each day one for each of us to keep our bond alive. One day the man came in and ordered only two beers. A murmur spread through the bar. A little later the bartender came over to his table and said, I m so sorry that one of your brothers passed away. What happened? Oh no, my brothers are just fine. You see it s just that I myself gave up drinking beer for Lent. We can approach Lent in a similar fashion, particularly if we see it as just a time to give up chocolate (or beer) for a few weeks. Lent seeks to jar us out of our normal routines in order that we will focus our time and energy on reinvigorating our relationship with God, assessing how well we are living the Gospel and making whatever changes are needed to better resist the temptations that divert us from God s ways. To accomplish this, the Church has traditionally urged us to rededicate ourselves to the practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving (charity) during the season of Lent with the idea that these practices will become part of the fabric of our lives beyond these 40 days! If we embark on any Lenten discipline supposing that we simply need to get through the next 40 days, we are missing the whole point. Here are a few ideas to consider for your Lenten activities: Spend at least 10 minutes per day praying. Set aside a regular time in your schedule and keep it without fail. Spend minutes reading the Scriptures each day. Start with the Gospels and read two chapters per day. Or simply use the readings for the day (found at Attend our parish mission with Kristin Bird on February 25 th and 26 th. Join us for the Stations of the Cross on the Fridays of Lent at 6:00pm. Participate in Mass more frequently. Sign up for Bishop Barron s daily Lenten reflections at And/Or Matthew Kelly s reflections at Volunteer at PADS or a food pantry. Or pack meals at Feed My Starving Children. Or join the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Donations are great, but personal involvement is even more valuable. Make Operation Rice Bowl part of your family plans during Lent. Over 35,000 people die from hunger EVERY DAY!! This is a chance to do something about it. Great news! As of last month, we have reached the 50% milestone!! We have now received payments equal to half of the amount pledged. We are also two-thirds of the way to reaching the amount that will allow us to retire our construction debt (when combined with the 3-to-1 match from the Archdiocese)! This is a fantastic achievement and we are deeply grateful for the commitment and generosity of everyone who has been contributing to the campaign over these many months! Once the debt has been eliminated, we will then be able to address several much-needed improvements of our campus. Pick one trait or habit that gets in the way of your relationships with your spouse, children, friends, and/or with God... and work on it! Fast from criticism, negativity, and gossip. Fast from apathy and procrastination. If there is a feud in your family, write a note and attempt to heal the division. Change how you spend your time: spend less time with TV or the internet and more time with your spouse & family. Increase your involvement with the parish and charitable groups. Dr. Sims is a parishioner of St. Mary of the Annunciation in Mundelein and serves as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion. She has served in a number of parishes and ministries within the Archdiocese of Chicago. Dr. Sims has been married to her husband, Howard, for 23 years.

The notion of the common good also extends to future generations. The global economic crises have made painfully obvious the detrimental effects of disregarding our common destiny, which cannot exclude those who come after us. We can no longer speak of sustainable development apart from intergenerational solidarity. Once we start to think about the kind of world we are leaving to future generations, we look at things differently; we realize that the world is a gift which we have freely received and must share with others. Since the world has been given to us, we can no longer view reality in a purely utilitarian way, in which efficiency and productivity are tntirely geared to our individual benefit. Intergenerational solidarity is not optional, but rather a basic question of justice, since the world we have received also belongs to those who will follow us. (159) How can you make a difference? You can learn True or False: Wasting less food is a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. True! More than a third of food produced globally never makes it to the table. Some of this wasted food spoils in transit, while consumers throw some of this food out. Encourage open, honest, and thoughtful reflection. Talk openly with young teens about healthy relationships. Allow them to articulate his or her values and expectations for healthy relationships. Rather than dismissing ideas as wrong, encourage debate this helps young people come to his or her own understanding. 2. Be sensitive and firm. Parenting a young teen is not easy especially when it comes to helping him or her navigate their way through relationships. To be effective, you will need to find the balance between being sensitive and firm. Try to adapt to the changes faced by your child. Be willing to talk openly and respect differences of opinion. And, realize that the decisions you make will sometimes be unpopular with your young teen. 3. Understand teen development. Adolescence is all about experimentation. From mood swings to risk taking, normal teenage behavior can appear anything-but-normal. New research, however, reveals that brain development during these formative years play a significant role in young teen s personality and actions. Knowing what s normal is critical to helping you better understand and guide young people. 4. Understand the pressure and the risk teen s face. Preteens and young teens face new and increasing pressures about sex, substance abuse and dating. Time and time again, young teens express their desire to have parents/role models take the time to listen to them and help them think through the situations they face be that person! 5. Take a clear stand. Make sure young teens know how you feel about disrespect, use of abusive or inappropriate language, controlling behavior, or any forms of violence. 6. Make the most of teachable moments. Use TV episodes, movies, music lyrics, news, community events or the experiences of friends to discuss healthy and unhealthy relationships. 7. Discuss how to be an upstander. Teach teens how to stand-up for friends when he or she observes unhealthy treatment of his or her peers. 8. Accentuate the positive. Conversations about relationships do not need to focus solely on risky behavior or negative consequences. Conversations should also address factors that promote healthy adolescent development and relationships. 9. Be an active participant in your young teen s life. Explore ways to know more about your young teen s friends and interests. Find activities you can do together. 10. Be prepared to make mistakes. You will make mistakes. Accept that you will make mistakes, but continue to help teens make responsible choices while trying to maintain that delicate balance of being sensitive, but firm. Parents are required to participate in a Baptismal Preparation class before scheduling a Baptism. Adults who wish to become Roman Catholics are enrolled in a formation process that includes prayer, dialogue, instruction, and introduction to the Church s life and values, rituals and tradition. Call the parish office for more information. St. Mary Parish rejoices with parishioners who are preparing for the Sacrament of Matrimony. The Church requires at least four months time before the marriage for adequate preparation. A parish wedding information packet is available at the parish office. Ministers of Care visit the homes of the sick, homebound, or hospitalized and bring Holy Communion to them. Call the parish office when a pastoral visit is desired. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered by the parish priest upon request. We welcome new members who wish to worship with us and support the parish s work and mission.
