1 MAY 20, 2018 SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST Living God's Word We pay much more attention to hiccups because they are disruptive. Sighing comes easily. It settles us and heals. There's good in both of them: hiccups direct our thoughts to what may need attention, sighing provides a moment of peace. Copyright (c) 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Weekend Mass Times: Sat. 5:00pm Sun. 7:30, 9:30,11:30am Reflecting on God s Word Sighs allow us to sit there for a moment or two without breathing just being there at peace and without whatever it is that we just exhaled, without our worry or our confusion or maybe even our inner pain. It s almost as if a sigh is a prayer for new spirit. On the other hand, hiccups are almost like breathing with potholes and speed bumps, like gulps of roughage to keep the good air flowing or maybe they re gulps of spirit to get the body into balance when it s quite content to stay out of balance, a kind of forced prayer. Lately I ve been thinking about sighing and hiccupping. Maybe it s because I ve grown older and sigh more often. Now when I sigh, I find myself deciding to live with life the way it is and saying to myself that it s got to be okay, because like it or not, it s all I ve got. I ve begun to realize that after fighting with some of my sins for sixty-some years without much ever seeming to change, maybe I just need to let God do whatever God is going to do. And so the Spirit sighs, which is another way of saying, Jesus is Lord. On the other hand, after sixty-plus years of living I also keep discovering new sinfulness in my life, little corners that I ve allowed to get dusty by staying out of them. Like greed that I had labeled being practical. Like protecting myself from being used, which turns out to be no more than selfishness. And every once in a while, in a moment of honesty, I ll come across one of those dusty corners, and it s a bit like trying to swallow a peanut butter sandwich without any milk. It s hard to get down, and then you start to hiccup. Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. 3 Dear Parishioners, On this day of Pentecost we are reminded that the Holy Spirit inspires our faith and our prayers. This grace not only sparked the beginning of the Church, it is also what sustains us now on our journey of faith. The Holy Spirit is always moving, always creating something new, healing and transforming our lives. Over many decades St. Mary s has been blessed by the gifts of many dedicated priests and has been a community that has warmly welcomed newly-ordained priests. Over the past three years we have been blessed by the youthful ministry of Fr. Matthew Alexander. He has been a true gift to our parish and to me personally. Last week Fr. Matthew informed me that the Cardinal had asked him to accept a faculty position at St Joseph College Seminary which is located on the Lake Shore campus of Loyola University. This came as a complete shock to me. I certainly was not expecting his departure to come so soon and I will greatly miss his daily companionship and assistance. Fr. Matthew s farewell weekend will take place on July 7 th and 8 th. Details have yet to be worked out. While I am deeply saddened by his departure, I know that he will be an inspiration to the young men discerning the priesthood. I ask for your prayers for Fr. Matthew during this time of transition. As the number of priests available for parish ministry continues to decrease we will feel more acutely this reality at St. Mary. It appears that we will not receive an associate pastor in this coming year. This will require us to make some adjustments, which the staff and leadership will discuss in the coming weeks. Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry from J acob s W ell Greetings in Christ, A few days ago, I received a phone call informing me that the Cardinal has appointed me to serve at St. Joseph s College Seminary to help form the hearts of the young men there who are discerning the priesthood. This assignment will begin July 9, I am saddened to inform you that I will not be here at St. Mary of the Annunciation this next year. This transition is yet another reminder that my priesthood is not my own and does not belong to me; rather, it is the Lord s. This assignment came unexpectedly and it will certainly be hard to leave this community that has formed me into the priest that I am today. I am grateful to God for this time together and to all of you for the love, support, and prayers that I have received in my time here. I could not have asked for a better first assignment as a priest. I have great confidence that you will be taken care of, for you are in the Lord s hands. The Lord will never cease to draw you closer to Himself if you but open your heart a little. Even the slightest lifting up of the heart is as a brandished sword in the hand of a warrior. Remain close to Him and He will remain close to you. In this time of transition, let us pray for one another. I have been given the great privilege of accompanying you on this journey to Heaven for these short years. With C. S. Lewis, I believe that we Christians never really say goodbye, for we shall indeed meet again either here or there. Under the Mercy, St. Augustine s Prayer to the Holy Spirit Breath in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit that I love only that which is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, O Holy Spirit t hat I may be holy. AMEN. Fr. Matthew Alexander

5 Deacon Deliberations by Deacon Gary Kupsak The Wind and the Holy Spirit Last summer, while working in Waukegan, I took a lunchtime trip to Waukegan Harbor to enjoy God s magnificence on a warm, sunny and breezy day. Right off the breakwater I saw a solitary wind-surfer. As this young man skimmed across the water, I followed him with my eyes. At one point, much to my surprise, he moved quite slowly, seeming almost to hover on the water. Then he would kick it into gear and race on, cutting across the water with confident pride, his effortless speed made possible because he had the wind at his back. Even while trying to balance two hot dogs (with everything) and a soft drink while walking of the uneven rocks, my eyes were irresistibly drawn to his dance over the waves. Propelled by the wind, he was full of energy, fast-moving and graceful. Even if he tipped over, he knew the wind would raise him up again. His skill came from his recognition of his own strengths and limitations, and his apparent respect for the wind. Without the wind, he couldn t speed over the water; nor, on his own, could he right himself if, due to a split second s misjudgment, he lost his balance and found himself submerged in the choppy gray waters. He had to trust himself to the wind, but he also knew how to negotiate with it. No wonder, I thought, no wonder the unseen wind is the age -old image of the Spirit. At Pentecost, it s good to remember the transforming effort of the Holy Spirit. When our world looks bleak, when we walk in sadness and anxiety, when nothing seems right, hopefully, the Spirit of God stirs the energy of joy within us. When restlessness or boredom or disappointment takes hold of us, the Spirit deepens in us the feeling of peace. As we struggle to believe in our own gifts and blessings, the Spirit strengthens in us the grace of goodness. When a look of love is all someone needs to make their day a total success, the Spirit creates in us the willingness to be kind. When our moods are dominated by harshness and our words by negativity or disrespect, the Spirit blesses us with gentleness. Wouldn t we, our families, those in our lives, the whole world be better off if we, like that wind-surfer, allowed the wind of the Spirit to push us, move us, propel us to be better Christians, and to be able to better serve our Lord Jesus Christ. Now we don t have to be out on Lake Michigan wind-surfing to feel the wind, to experience the warm, comforting and soothing effects that the Spirit has for us. We can feel the Spirit wherever we may be, just let it happen. COUNTRY FEST 2018 Silent Auction The Country Fest Committee is currently looking for donations for the silent auction. 7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer As we celebrate Pentecost today there is a strong temptation to look on this feast merely as a commemoration of a past historical event. However, Pentecost happens to us now, not just with the Apostles yesterday. We need to be personally aflame for Jesus Christ and his Church, today and every day. As we celebrate the birthday of the Church we should examine how well we are doing as individuals and as a community in fulfilling the mission to bring the Gospel to the world. There is much that is good, but areas where we are falling short, too. We are all aware that active participation in the life of the Church, which starts with Sunday Mass attendance, has been eroding. Mass attendance began declining in the 1950s. Today approximately onethird of U.S. Catholics regularly go to mass on Sundays. If counted as a separate religion, fallen away Catholics would be the second largest denomination in the country. Studies show that 6.4% of a parish provides 80% of the volunteer hours while 6.8% provides 80% of the financial support. Meanwhile, Christians have dropped to an all-time low of 71% of the U.S. population and nones are up to 23%. The numbers are even worse among young people. But we don t need statistics to bring this situation to our attention. Undoubtedly these challenges are reflected among the members of our own families. The causes of these trends are many and complex. Likewise, there are no simple solutions. But I am convinced that the solution begins with each one of us. You and I must live like Pentecost disciples who are on fire from our personal relationship with the Lord and his other disciples. However, recent surveys show that part of the problem is that we Catholics, when taken as a whole, don t look much different than anyone else in society. Our divorce rate, our lifestyles, our entertainment choices, our knowledge of the faith, etc., all mirror the prevailing superficial culture rather than bucking the trends. Yet, at its core, Christianity is counter-cultural. But our lives seem to mostly embrace our culture. What are we doing that is really counter-cultural? What acts of service and sacrifice are we making on a routine basis? Do we talk to others about the importance of Christ in our lives and show how faith makes a difference? Or do just hope that osmosis will do the trick while we remain silent? Do we live lives of joy and compassion animated by our faith or, in the words of Pope Francis, are we spiritual sourpusses who live like Lent with no Easter? On this day when the Apostles were energized by the Spirit to go out and preach the Gospel to all nations and transform the world, you and I need to take a deep, hard look at the level of our energy and commitment for living the faith we profess. Am I going to mass every week in order to give praise and thanks to God? Have I arranged my life so that I devote precious time and funds to advance the mission of the Church? Do I pray every day? Am I studying and growing in the Faith? What incremental changes can I start today to get things moving in the right (counter-cultural) direction? The picture is by no means all bleak and foreboding. Many fellow disciples among us live exemplary lives of love and service. We should not take for granted how much is being done in our parish and throughout the entire Church to make the Gospel felt in the lives of others. And most importantly, the Spirit is still moving and working in our midst. His appearance in the upper room on Pentecost was not a Dedication of Memorial to Fr. Ron Lewinski Saturday, June 23rd After the 5:00 PM Mass We will dedicate a memorial to Fr. Ron Lewinski after Mass on June 23rd. The memorial is on the western edge of our parish cemetery; its retaining wall can be seen from the driveway. It was from this location that Fr. Ron would observe the progress of construction of our new church. A memorial plaque will be placed on the paved area. Also there will be a new bench as well as the cross that was carried for the blessing of the building site. A photograph of the procession with this cross may be seen on the wall of the meeting rooms hallway. Recording Secretary Needed for Finance Council The St. Mary of the Annunciation Finance Council is looking for a volunteer to serve as a Recording Secretary. The Recording Secretary is not a member of the Council but rather serves to write brief notes/ minutes for each meeting and to assist the Chairperson with other internal communications. This note-taking function does not require extensive financial expertise, although some familiarity with finance concepts and terminology would be helpful. The Council meets monthly, typically on the 3rd Wednesday. If you are interested in interviewing for this role or would like more information, please contact Howard Fischer in the Parish Office or at hfischer@stmota.org. one and done. But the mission begun that day is not complete. And its progress depends on you and me. We need to move with greater vigor and commitment, tapping into the Spirit more deeply in order to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ and extend the presence of our Lord through works of love, mercy, charity and justice. Pentecost is not the celebration of a long-ago historical event. It is about our on-going openness to and cooperation with the Holy Spirit to spread the life of the Gospel in the world. Today. Now. Whatever you and I are doing presently, we need to kick it up a notch or two. As with the Apostles, the Spirit will enable us to break free from fear and the status quo to change the world. May you and I have fire in our souls. If you wish to contact me, please send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com.

9 Jesus reminds us how many people are persecuted simply because they struggle for justice Unless we wish to sink into an obscure mediocrity, let us not long for an easy life, for whoever would save his life will lose it (Mt 16:25). -Pope Francis, Gaudete et Exsultate Children make up more than half of all Syrian refugees. They have witnessed violence, lost homes or loved ones, and most have been out of school for years. Refugee children, especially girls, are also more vulnerable to human trafficking, early marriage, and forced labor. Providing opportunities for education is one way to reduce their risk of being trafficked. ACTION: Contact your Senators to co-sponsor the Protecting Girls' Access to Education in Vulnerable Settings Act. Call (202) to reach the Capitol switchboard. For additional ways to advocate for immigrants and refugees visit: HUMAN CONCERNS COMMISSION: The mission of the Human Concerns Commission is to promote the word and manifest the love of Jesus Christ by helping those who are in need, following the principle that whatever you do to the least of my people, you do unto me. ST. MARY CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME MINISTRY tip: Consider going green for your next party. Each year Americans toss out enough paper and plastic cups, forks, and spoons to circle the equator 300 times. If your gathering is too large to use your regular tableware, there are some good options. Look for biodegradable and compostable products made from bamboo and other materials. One member of our ministry did this last year for her daughter s graduation party...and while the 100 guests were a bit surprised, it was very easily accomplished to avoid using disposables! And it made for a wonderfully elegant celebration! Get the conversation started on how we can all make small changes in how we care for our common home the earth! May is Mental Health Month Many of your friends, family members, and co-workers will have a form of mental illness at sometime in their lives. Often hidden, it nevertheless carries a stigma. Sharing experiences and discussing openly can help reduce the stigma. Check out: catholicswithmentalillness.org to learn about mental illness and the Four Legs of Recovery. Ifyou would like to know more about how to help create mental illness awareness and welcome in our parish, please contact Diane Mulroe in the office. If you are a relative or friend of a deceased Veteran, The St. Mary Military Ministry invites you to have your loved one prayed for at the Memorial Day Mass May 28th at 9:00am in the little church Prayer for deceased Veterans: O God, by whose mercy the faithful departed find rest, look kindly on your departed veterans who gave their lives in the service of their country. Grant that through the passion, death, and resurrection of your Son they may share in the joy of your heavenly kingdom and rejoice in you with your saints forever. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Also, please help us to know who in our parish is a veteran (living or deceased) or active service member by filling out a Military Ministry card available on the kiosk or in the parish office. Human Concern Commission Members: Carey Marciniak, Chairperson; Deacon Gary Kupsak, Kathleen DeCaire- Aden, Kris Crotty, Linda Green, Tom Hanley, Mary Lou Loomis, Sue Poletto, Dan Prezell, Kristi Smith, Jan Swanson, Romaine Van Zeyl, Nydia Welles, Diane Mulroe, Staff Liaison Join us for meetings 4th Wednesdays 3:30pm

10 Pentecost Sunday REMEMBERING AT THE DOOR What was the first thing you did today as you entered the church? The very first ritual gesture we are invited to make is the dipping of our hand in a font or vessel of holy water. We then make a sign of the cross. For so many of us this gesture has become routine and its potential impact passes us by. Obviously, we make this gesture to remind us that baptism was our entry, our initiation, into the Church. Each time we come to worship, we remind ourselves that we are baptized believers. In order to recover the meaning of this gesture, many people have begun to add an extra remembrance to this gesture. When making the sign of the cross with the holy water, consider bringing to mind those who initially brought you to the sacrament of baptism your parents and godparents. BAPTISM AS THE ROOT OF VOCATION On this great feast of Pentecost, when we celebrate the inrushing of the Holy Spirit, it is good for us to recall our own baptism. Baptism is at the foundation of each Christian s call, or vocation, to share in the ministry of Jesus Christ. For some, this means a response to the call to ordained ministry. For the vast majority of us, our vocation is played out in life s relationships and everyday situations. Our ordained leaders have the responsibility of inspiring us to do the work of building the reign of God in those places where our daily routines take us: school, work, the gym, the supermarket, the mall, our dinner tables, around the television, or at the computer. At our baptism, we were given the gift of the Holy Spirit. In confirmation, we were sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The power to share in the ministry of Christ is planted within us. Let us be open to rediscovering the power of the Holy Spirit on this Pentecost and throughout the coming year. Copyright 2005, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
