1 MAY 17, 2015 ASCENSION OF THE LORD Living God s Word In today s readings, Christ leaves his corporation, the church, and trusts the employees, his disciples, to run things in his absence. Considering the two-thousand-year history of the Church, many might question the wisdom of his decision! Yet, Christ knew that the Spirit would always guide the Church in continuing his messianic mission. Copyright 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Reflecting on God s Word These days most corporations and churches have vision and mission statements. Often they begin with a model vision that the institution strives to live up to. They go on to state what the institution seeks to do how it puts its vision into practice. A parish vision and mission statement might say: We are the Body of Christ. Utilizing the gifts of each member, we collaborate to bring more and more people into God s kingdom of freedom, justice, holiness, and love. On this feast we are given the ultimate vision and mission statement for the Church. It goes something like this: Christ is now working with and for us at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19). Through the power of the Holy Spirit we are to be Christ s witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). We seek to do so by proclaiming the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15) and building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God (Ephesians 4:12 13). 3 The Ascension of the Lord Great feast that Easter is, one day (not even three days!) is insufficient to celebrate the fullness of the mystery of the resurrection. So, as Christians, we keep a fifty-day-long festival, punctuated by the Solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord the fortieth day of Easter. The feast of the Ascension, like a prism, helps us focus the wondrous colors of the Easter spectrum. These images from the Ascension liturgy give us a sense of the hope and joy that color this feast: Christ s ascension is our glory and hope. The joy of the resurrection and the ascension renews the whole world. Where Christ has gone, we hope to follow. Christ has passed beyond our sight, not to abandon us, but to be our hope. Christ was taken up to heaven to claim for us a share in his divine life. If we have been united with Christ through baptism in his death and resurrection, we are surely united with him in the transformation and redemption of his humanity. What we celebrate, however, is not only a past or future event. We are given glimpses of our glorious destiny even now. So, feet firmly planted on earth, the community gathers to rejoice in the life we share with the risen Lord. 5 MISSION POST Opportunity to Serve at Pacific Garden Mission "Volunteering at PGM is an opportunity to help those who are homeless and in need. Making beds and serving lunch for a few hours takes very little effort, but hopefully makes the day a little better for someone else. You truly appreciate that you are blessed to have a home to go back to at the end of the day. You also get to spend the afternoon with a great group from St. Mary of the Annunciation, so it's a wonderful way to end a Sunday!" Testimony from a parishioner who regularly serves at PGM Memorial Day Mass Monday, May 25 9:00 AM Little Church Join us as we remember those who have died in service to our country. Please join our group from St. Mary's on May 17 from 12:30-3:30pm. All are welcome, including children. RSVP to Kathy Payette (847) or carrier-pigeon@att.net Need to carpool? Contact Kathy. Pacific Garden Mission's address is1458 S. Canal Street, Chicago Beatification of Oscar Romero at Holy Name With joy the Archdiocese of Chicago will acknowledge the Beatification of Servant of God, Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero, the fourth Archbishop of San Salvador, at a Mass at Holy Name Cathedral on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. Archbishop Blase J. Cupich will preside. This Mass, offered in the Spanish language, will take place at the same time as the Beatification Mass in San Salvador. Parishioners are invited to participate in solidarity with the people of El Salvador and to commend the man who espoused the Christian virtues of peace, reconciliation and justice. After observing terrible violations of human rights in his country, Archbishop Romero publicly spoke out on behalf of the poor and the victims of San Salvador s civil war. In 1980, he was assassinated while at Mass for his non-violent advocacy. His death provoked an international outcry for human rights reform. In 1997, a cause for beatification and canonization into sainthood was begun for Romero, and Pope John Paul II bestowed upon him the title of Servant of God. 7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer We can get so pre-occupied with wondering what actually took place with the Ascension that we distort the event into a cartoonish Jesus floating into the sky like some helium balloon. Fundamentally, the Solemnity of the Ascension recalls that Jesus appearances to the disciples following the Resurrection came to an end at some point. But that fact is secondary to the main point of this feast: Jesus didn t leave without first giving clear instructions about what we need to do until He comes again we are to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth. Why are you standing around looking up to the sky? This question, directed at the Apostles, can also be asked of you and me. To the extent that we are so busy gazing off into the future or so preoccupied with the practice of religious rituals that we are oblivious to the mission that Jesus has entrusted to us, you and I are guilty of staring slack-jawed off into space when there is work to be done. As if it isn't hard enough to follow the Gospel in every aspect of our own lives, you and I are also sent to spread that Gospel to every person, every situation we encounter. Isn't it hard enough just trying to live the Christian way of life in dealing with the nosy neighbor next door while struggling with illnesses, financial woes and countless daily hardships and temptations? And on top of that we re supposed to spread and cultivate the Gospel in an often-hostile (or at least, disinterested) world that surrounds us? And so we stand staring off into space, hoping for a different answer, for an easier mission, for someone else to do the dirty work. The message of the Ascension is that the Kingdom of God does not only exist in the next life it starts HERE. NOW. Spreading the Gospel occurs not by stridently scolding people for their lapses. Rather, it begins by concretely demonstrating mercy, compassion and charity to those most in need. This is not simply the job of the institutional Church or of a designated handful of special people it is the responsibility of every person who has accepted the invitation to become a follower of Jesus Christ. Christianity is not a spectator sport; it is an all-consuming way of life. May we stop gazing off, waiting for a miracle to drop from the sky. You and I are to be God s miracle on the ground. Time to roll up our sleeves and get to work. You may recall from past columns that my son and daughter -in-law are Maryknoll Lay Missioners who are currently serving the poor in Brazil. Kim has been working with prison inmates and Greg with immigrants. Greg started a Facebook blog ( Faces of Migration Rostos da Migração in Portuguese) to share the stories and experiences of some of the immigrants he helps at Missão Paz, the mission run by the Scalabrini order of priests to assist immigrants. Many of the stories are powerful and poignant. Here is one: Emmanuel Taylor of Cameroon is searching for his mother, as he calls her, from the orphanage in Ndop, Cameroon. My parents are dead. My mother died when I was three days old. My grandmother came to the village to pick me up and took me to the orphanage in Ndop. My grandmother was very old and couldn t care for me. She gave me to Marabell. Marabell Taylor is Caucasian American and worked at this orphanage run by the Presbyterian Church. Emmanuel says that she is fluent in Bassa, a native language in West Africa. He thinks she returned to California because she was sick, but he does not have any more information on her location other than this. Till this day, I do not know if she s alive or dead. In my mind, I don t believe she s dead; I know she s alive she s Join the CRS Response to the Nepal Earthquake On Saturday, April 25th, Nepal experienced a massive earthquake of 7.8 magnitude centered about 50 miles northwest of the capital city, Kathmandu. The following Sunday morning, Nepal experienced another 6.7 magnitude aftershock of the initial earthquake. The official death toll is above 3,600 people and is still rising, with officials yet to reach many outlying villages. The earthquake has also caused deadly avalanches around Mount Everest and its deadly ripple effect has killed dozens in neighboring China and India. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has made an initial commitment of 725,000 toward relief efforts in Nepal and surrounding countries where a powerful earthquake has caused widespread damage. As CRS personnel arrive in Kathmandu, they will work closely with Caritas Nepal and Caritas India as well as Caritas Australia which has staff on the ground. We are immediately sending materials for emergency shelter and for safe water, sanitation and hygiene as these are expected to be the urgent needs, said CRS India Country Representative Tony Castleman. Because of the cold conditions, CRS is also sending blankets to the area. Supplies prepositioned in India will be moved by road into Nepal as additional relief items are procured locally. Rescue is the first priority, said Fr. Pius Perumana S.J., Director of Caritas Nepal, based in Kathmandu. Lots of people have lost their homes and are out on the street or in open spaces so we will be looking to provide them with food and temporary shelter. A Call for Collective Action Please consider helping and praying for our Nepalese brothers and sisters in peril by donating to CRS: By Mail ATTN: Nepal Emergency Appeal Catholic Relief Services 3525 S. Lake Park Ave Chicago, IL Online At St. Mary Place your donation in the Nepal Earthquake Appeal bos in the narthex living in California. I still cry at times, at night, because I don t know what happened to her. (Through the blog, Greg is following up on some longshot leads to help Emmanuel find Marabell, this most special piece of his past.) Lest we become oblivious, the poor, the immigrant, the refugee here and abroad are not simply statistics. They are real human beings. They are our sisters and brothers. They need and deserve our help and not just our lip-service. If you wish to contact me, just leave a note in the parish office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com.

8 On Mealtime as Prayer Eating together as family, with friends or in community is as old a human expression as history can recall. The very word companion means the one you share your bread with. Sharing food is just as nourishing to the soul as eating is nourishing for the body. How is it that in recent years the family meal has suffered such disintegration? All day we graze and nibble and by dinner time, we are no longer hungry. We are so busy, that we cannot cook, or cannot sit together over food and drink to share the events of the day and the issues that burn in our hearts. The average American family eats dinner in about five minutes! In these Easter days, beyond the meal shared which we call the last supper, we hear that the risen Jesus shared his bread at the end of a long walk with his grieving disciples on the road to Emmaus. He broke bread with them and they knew him in the breaking of the bread. Every meal that we share is an occasion to know him to recognize Christ in the heart of the persons with whom we share our meal. We also hear the story of a fish fry that the risen Jesus prepared for his friends after a night of fishing. How concrete. How physical. How human. How loving. Ghosts don t cook for us. But the bodily presence of a risen Lord knows our bodily hungers and provides for us in material ways. To share what we have with another is to know him. To break bread with a blessing is to help us remember that every meal looks concretely to the meal. And it isn t possible to comprehend the eucharistic meal if we don t understand the sacramentality of the daily meal. Collect blessings for your table. Offer a variety of words and songs so that your prayers do not become routine or unimaginative. Take time to enjoy your meal and to enjoy one another. If you live alone, invite others in to share your bread. I saw a stranger today I put food for him I n the eating place And drink in the drinking place. In the Holy Name of the Trinity He blessed myself and my house My goods and my family. And the lark said in her warble Often, often, often Goes Christ in the stranger s guise 0, oft and oft and oft, Goes Christ in the stranger s guise. 9 Father Matthew Alexander Ordained a Priest of Jesus Christ May ₁₆, ₂₀₁₅ Holy Name Cathedral Archdiocese of Chicago Fr. Matthew will serve our parish beginning in July. Let us pray for God s blessing upon him as he begins his ministry to the Church. Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is strong as death, jealousy is cruel as the grave. It s flashes are flashes of fire, a most vehement flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, it would be utterly scorned.
