1 FEBRUARY 8, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Living God s Word After his time spent alone, Jesus was very certain of his purpose. We, too, can be more aware of God s purpose for us if we but make the time to listen. Copyright 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Reflecting on God s Word Sue loves to iron clothes. In the process, she says, she also irons out her life, all its wrinkles and creases. She says she can stand neither her clothes nor her life when they re all rumpled. John runs every day. A lot of folks do. He hasn t missed a day in five years. But it s also where he and they pace out the rhythms of their lives. More than one frazzled mother has locked herself in the bathroom for twenty minutes of solitude and quasi-peace. Sometimes deserts look like bathrooms. Even teenagers know the need, so they crank up some tunes, stretch out on their beds, and listen beyond the music to the melodies played upon their lives. I suspect there is a lot going on in those spaces. That s where kids get raised and loves get sorted and businesses are merged and decisions unraveled and re-raveled. But somewhere in the midst of it all we also make some decisions about who and what we want to become in this life at any age. That s where goodness has a chance to surface and values are affirmed and commitments are remade for the umpteenth time and faith sprouts forth. And then it becomes prayer, out of the silence and the stillness and the darkness of time spent alone. Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. 3 from J acob s W ell ASH WEDNESDAY LITURGIES February 18, :30 AM Liturgy of the Word with Imposition of Ashes 8:00 & 9:30 AM Mass with Imposition of Ashes 4:00 PM Liturgy of the Word with Imposition of Ashes During these short weeks before we enter into the season of Lent, the passages we read from the Gospel of Mark give us concise details of the beginning of Jesus ministry. From his Baptism, to his calling of the first disciples, to the dramatic healing in the synagogue, to the healing of Simon Peter s mother-in-law in today s passage, Jesus made it clear that he was about the business of setting people free from whatever it was that kept them from becoming who God wants them to be. Jesus, the great healer of human brokenness, was unafraid to confront evil and the destructive forces of his time. The scriptures reveal to us today that Jesus popularity was growing. In our time we might say that Jesus had gained rock star status. I think this had the effect of exhausting him. In spite of this, Jesus never lost sight of why he came. His ministry was about far more than just helping people with their immediate concerns, as important as those may be. In a sense Jesus used these healings as a way to invite those who were healed to a renewed relationship with God. Healing our human condition is not the end,; eternal salvation is. This weekend is Commitment Sunday for the Annual Catholic Appeal which helps to sustain the many good works of the Archdiocese of Chicago and our parish. The annual appeal supports our Catholic schools, parish services, disadvantaged communities, and programs that promote Gospel values and the protection of human life. The 2015 target remains at 6% of the previous year s offertory income. Our target for this year is $74, When parishioner contributions exceed this parish goal, Saint Mary of the Annunciation will receive a rebate of 100% of the funds paid over the goal. Let us pray for the success of the Annual Catholic Appeal. Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry 7:00 PM Mass with Imposition of Ashes All liturgies take place in the big church Lenten Regulations from February 18, 2015, Ash Wednesday, to the Paschal Triduum Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. Featured CD for February Encountering the Poor: Biblical Roots for Catholic Social Teaching by Dr Tim Gray Dr. Timothy Gray is the president of the Augustine Institute and is a well-known scripture scholar and Catholic speaker. With his eloquent style and polished delivery, Dr. Gray expounds upon the teachings of the Catholic Church surrounding social justice in light of sacred scripture. Discover how social justice in regards to the poor is not one small piece in the puzzle but instead really frames the entire mosaic of scripture. Feature CDs can be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material.

4 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer Our lives are often filled with turmoil, trial and anxiety. We have to face illness, job loss, betrayal, broken relationships, the death of loved ones and even our own mortality. The allegorical Book of Job illustrates quite accurately what all too often is our human experience. If you need a companion in facing anguish, Job is your guy. He not only feels your pain, he can raise you five! Job s misery is something we can all relate to. He knows the agony of loss; his children have died all ten of them. He has suffered financial disaster as all of his material wealth goes up in smoke in a single day. He experiences physical suffering as he is plagued by boils which prevent him from sleeping and are painful for others to look at. His marriage fails when his disgusted wife walks out. He experiences social shame as all of his friends think he s to blame for his own troubles and abandon him. And perhaps worst of all, he experiences the dreadful loneliness of God s silence. And we think we re having a bad day/week/month!!! Today s first reading speaks of Job s despair and gloom. Of course, the story of Job does not end on this bleak note. In the end, God rewards Job because he does not lose faith despite his many trials. As disciples of the Lord, we know that we have good reason to hope rather than despair: Throughout the Gospels (as in today s passage) we see that when given the chance Jesus actively engages in conquering all forms of suffering. Jesus also endures horrible torture and death but emerges from the tomb to a glorious new and eternal life. Thus, we have reason to be confident that the ultimate victory will be ours no matter what tribulations we go through in the meantime. Perhaps one of the best ways for us to battle despair is to spend some time each day recognizing and being thankful for the many blessings we have in our lives. Yes, things can be difficult in many ways; there s no denying the reality of the many forms of suffering that can appear in our lives. Yet through it all, we still have countless blessings, big and small, that are with us even in the darkest hours. The glass is always more full than we recognize or appreciate. Others have much heavier burdens to carry than we do. We also need to keep in mind what things are truly important in life. The following metaphor tries to put life in a bit of perspective. Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends and spirit and you re keeping all of these in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls- family, health, friends and spirit are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. I think I would take one exception to this little allegory. If we are to understand spirit to mean our relationship with God, then this glass ball is a bit different than the others. Yes, it can be shattered by us. But if we later come to our senses, God will replace it with a new, perfect glass ball. However, the come to our senses part isn t so easy, so we are much better off to not let it be damaged in the first place! We all have some source of hurt operating in our lives. However, Scripture assures us that God is on our side and that we should not lose hope and faith, even in our darkest hour.
