1 MARCH 4, RD SUNDAY OF LENT Living God's Word As much as we may want the temples of our lives cleared, we also like much of what takes up our lives. Still, God does come and does clear our temples in unsuspecting ways. Children grow up; friendships melt into memories. What is God asking us to clear away today? Copyright (c) 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Reflecting on Godʹs Word All of us wish we could be holy, we say, if only Jesus would come and do to the temple of our faith what he did to the temple of Israelʹs faith: cast out what doesnʹt belong, because we donʹt seem to be able to do it for ourselves, at least not with much effectiveness. We try to pray and find ourselves daydreaming about what to make for supper, about the latest family argument, about the meeting weʹre going to attend, about where weʹre going to spend our money. We try to simplify, but we also like our lives the way they are. We like the cut of style, the thick of our lawn, the escape of vacation, the high from shopping or chocolate or daytime soaps or whatever catches our fancy. We wish we would love better, care better, have more compassion or patience, be more generous, but original sin always gets in the way--only we donʹt call it original sin. We say we donʹt have willpower or the energy. So what are we to do? Johnʹs Gospel promises that God will come and drive such stuff from our lives. In fact, the promise is that God will do it whether we wish God to or not, which is probably a good move on Godʹs part simply because most of us are a bit fearful of what God may clear away. --Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright (c) 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. 3 from J acob s W ell Will You Walk with Someone on their Journey of Faith? As we were reminded during our Lenten Mission, being a true disciple of Jesus requires us to accompany others in their journey of faith. Becoming part of the RCIA team is one way to put that commitment into practice. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process accompanies men and women who are interested in becoming Roman Catholic or would like to complete their initiation into the Catholic Church. These men and women may be baptized in another Christian faith tradition or may not be baptized at all but seeking a relationship with God in Christ. What do I need to know to be part of the team? There is no expertise or particular knowledge needed to be part of the team. Here are the requirements to be a member of the RCIA team: A Baptized, Confirmed Catholic who participates in the life of the parish, especially through regular participation in the Mass. A person who loves their Catholic faith and wants to share it (or learn to share it) with others. A person with a sense of humor and one who is accepting of others as they are and where they are in their faith journey. A person who desires to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ and in their faith. What is the time commitment? There are many ways that you can help support and participate in this wonderful experience as a member of the Team. Some possibilities: Become a team member who participates on a regular basis with the sessions in a supportive and possibly in a teaching role. If you choose to help with teaching, you may want to partner with another team member as you acclimate to the process. Become a monthly supporter of the process by your presence, participating in one session a month and caring for the set-up of our meeting space, or providing hospitality for the session. Don t have time to attend more meetings? You could consider being an off-site program manager who helps the team manage the communication, calendar and presenters through and phone calls. What if I want to be involved but not part of the team? Become a sponsor for a person who is making this journey. You accompany them to the sessions, help them incorporate into our parish life, support them with your presence and prayers. You are not on to answer all their questions: the team helps with that. If you have any questions or if you are interested in becoming a part of this exciting process please contact Fr Jerry. frjerry@stmota.org Dear Parishioners, What does it mean to be a true disciple of Jesus? This was the starting point of our conversation with Kristin Bird who led our Lenten Mission. There were many insights that I gained from her presentation. She reminded us that Jesus is the only Gospel we have and challenged us to be able to articulate what Jesus is doing in our lives. A word of thanks to Jen Pepping and to all who assisted in the presentation of the Parish Mission. Thanks to the members of the Faith formation and parish life commission: Diane Igielski, Sheila Dalton, Joaquin Valdes, Pete Coughlin, Debbie Chin, Sue Matousek, Carey Marciniak,Grant Bright, Lori Roberts, Gina Debord and thanks to all who helped in any way. May your relationship with Jesus deepen with every step on our Lenten journey. Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry

Formation and Training for New Lectors Lectors have a critical role in the celebration of the Mass. Because lectors proclaim not just any word, but the word of God, it is essential that they develop the skills required to communicate God s message competently. Through the use of voice, eye contact and personal presence, lectors help God s Word come alive for the assembly. This training will provide the skills and selfconfidence needed for those who wish to become lectors in their own parish. Open to adults and high school students. Featured CD for March Religionless Spirituality: Why We Need the Church by Dr. Tim Gray Renowned Scripture scholar and author, Dr. Tim Gray, provides a fascinating explanation of the importance of the visible Church and the centrality of God on Earth. He offers incredible insights that make clear the role of the Church as an essential part of God s plan for salvation, which are sure to help those who have left her, or who mistakenly claim to be spiritual, but not religious. Feature CDs may be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material.

5 Lenten Reflection Exchange Our re lection this week is written by Sue Poletto My understanding of the season of Lent and what it meant began early in my life. I attended Catholic grammar school through the eighth grade and the tradition of Lent became second nature to me. My family would walk to church every Friday in Lent to attend Stations of the Cross. We had the regular meatless Fridays and the importance those 40 days was ingrained in us. When I grew into an adult my observance of the Lenten tradition evolved and I became more interested in becoming a more faith illed Catholic by making positive changes in my life. The idea of service became increasingly important to me. When my family moved to Mundelein, we found an amazing faith home at St. Mary Parish. We became close to several priests, including Fr. Gene Kuesal, Fr. Ron Lewinski, Fr. Nate Payne and Fr. Pat O Malley, all of whom mentored us in our faith life. Throughout our lives Lent has been a period of introspection and service. As a deacon s wife I am blessed to have many opportunities to serve. I try to move out of my comfort zone and into a deeper way of serving throughout the season of Lent, especially as we see Christ in the faces of our PADS guests. I still read Fr. O Malley s Lenten Re lections as I start my day and it always makes me smile. I am grateful to have every season of Lent to become closer to the Lord with our St. Mary s family. Lenten Schedule STATIONS OF THE CROSS Fridays at 6:00PM: March 9, 16, and 23 SACRAMENT OF RECONCILATION All Saturdays at 4:00 PM Individual confessions may be scheduled through the parish office Added hour of confessions: March 24, 3:00 5:00 PM No Confessions on Holy Saturday, March 31 LENTEN RECONCILIATION SERVICE Thursday, March 22 7:00 PM A short Liturgy of the Word followed by an extended period for individual Confessions. Join the Lenten Reflection Exchange Chances are you do not blow trumpets and rend your garments as a Lenten ritual in your family. But, if you give yourself a moment or two to reflect, you may recall some rich and beautiful traditions practiced by your family during this most reverent season of Lent. Perhaps you have even recently introduced a special ritual to your own family which has helped to provide a memorable path to Easter! You may be pondering right now how your family could experience a more meaningful way of rending your hearts and returning to the Lord, our God, for Lent We invite you to share your memories during this penitential season as a part of St Mary s Lenten Reflection Exchange. Whether it was the family s weekly prayerful donation to Operation Rice Bowl, a Friday evening bowl of soup in prayerful solitude after Stations of the Cross, or particularly memorable fasts what are your most heart- or soul-felt memories of celebrating Lent? You are welcome to send your Lenten Reflection Exchange offerings right away to stmotaspotlight@gmail.com. With your permission we will begin sharing at least one reflection/ritual/tradition each week in the bulletin and on the parish website beginning March 3 and running through Palm Sunday weekend. We will follow up through if necessary. Please keep your exchange offering to no more than 300 words so we can adhere to bulletin and website space availability. Thank you for taking this small request to heart. Perhaps your practice of sharing in this Reflection Exchange may bring a hungry soul closer to Jesus. 7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer In today s Gospel Jesus cleanses the temple of the moneychangers and merchants. Why was he so angry? Were the moneychangers taking unfair advantage by charging exorbitant fees to the pilgrims who needed their services to offer proper sacrifice in the temple? Likely. But Jesus was probably more irate that this business had become, well, just business. The mechanics of temple worship had replaced the purpose and meaning of temple worship. Instead of being transformational, worship had become a transaction, a rote exercise. So what about us? Jesus took worship very seriously. Do we come each weekend seeking salvation, worshipping God in spirit and truth? Do our attitudes, actions and even our attire reflect a respect for the sacred? Do we have zeal, not just for God s House but for living in an intimate relationship with him? We need to let Christ clear from the temples of our lives the clutter and behaviors we have slipped into that do not reflect the ways of the Gospel. It is common to joke about Catholic guilt. Certainly our religious heritage has long featured an acute awareness of human sinfulness. After all, Jesus began his ministry by saying, The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the Gospel! One does not need to repent unless there is something to turn away from sin. But it seems that many in society and in the Church now operate as if there is no sin, no personal responsibility for our actions, no absolute standards of morality and truth. We look for someone else to blame, someone to sue, or some excuse to offer. If Jesus came back today and urged us to repent would the response be, From what? Yes, God has boundless love and mercy. But he also has expectations. Today s Scripture readings remind us that there are indeed absolute standards of right and wrong and that we are responsible for our conduct. There are divine commandments, not just suggestions. It s not all relative. All value systems are not equally valid. Just as Jesus does a little house cleaning in the Temple, you and I need to do some house cleaning in our hearts and behaviors during Lent so that our lives are in better alignment with the Gospel. I am not suggesting that we have an obsessive preoccupation with feeling guilty, but we need to recover our sense of personal responsibility and accountability for our behavior. There is sin and WE commit it! Each of us needs to change our ways, atone for our misdeeds, and seek God s mercy and forgiveness. We have to stop being so satisfied with how well we think we are doing and start to feel the uncomfortable pangs of guilt now and then. As Christians and as a society, we need to hold ourselves and others accountable to ethical and moral standards. Right and wrong are not relative to what we individually think. Stealing is wrong. So are adultery, lying, pre-marital sex, pornography, and disrespect of others. So are greed, sloth and selfishness. We need to treat each other with manners, civility and respect. Vulgar bumper stickers and t-shirts should be spurned. The slide of moral relativism and permissiveness must be halted, starting in our own lives and in our own families. Just as Jesus did not passively tolerate the actions of the moneychangers who defrauded the poor, you and I need to remember that there are consequences to unrepented sin, and those consequences are deadly. True repentance, on the other hand, taps into the limitless well of God s mercy and forgiveness, and brings life. The path of repentance begins in our own hearts, not with the other guy. It begins with seeing and removing the plank in our own eye and not the splinter in someone else s. We must own up to those times when we fall short and do something about it! Lent is not simply about not practicing some seasonal devotions; it is about making real, lasting changes in our lives. May our worship and practice of the faith not be a transaction or rote exercise. If you wish to contact me, please send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com. 10 Meet members of the St. Mary Domestic Violence Ministry in the narthex after all masses this weekend. February was Teen Dating Violence Awareness month. Let s keep the conversation going. The focus of our exhibit is Healthy vs Unhealthy Relationships and we have some special giveaways available! Stop by and say hi! Caring for Loved Ones at Life's End An old Irish proverb says, "It is in the shelter of each other that the people live." Indeed, we are created to depend upon one another and walk together in suffering. But when family members or friends approach life's end, we may not know how best to "shelter" them. Here are some concrete ways we can compassionately care for them. (1st in a series of articles from USCCB) Invite God In: Pope Francis has said that "praying in difficult situations is like opening the door to the Lord, in order that he might enter."1 The dying process is a sacred time a final season to seek closure in this life and prepare for the next in the hope of sharing in Christ's Resurrection. As you enter into this season with your friend or family member, ask God to accompany both of you. Listen: Try to discover your loved one's values and how best to honor his or her wishes. This requires true empathy. It can be hard not to assume he or she wants the same thing you think you would want if you were in the same situation. Listen with a non-judgmental ear so your loved one feels free to speak openly. Inform Yourself: Be aware that wishes for refusing ordinary or proportionate treatment or for pursuing assisted suicide are usually rooted in fears of dependency, helplessness, or pain. Make yourself available to discuss these or any concerns. Know that hospice care focuses on alleviating pain and other symptoms, meeting basic needs, and providing comfort. Seek to understand the Catholic Church's teaching on end-of-life care, which can help you provide authentically loving support that respects life.* Accompanying a loved one in his or her last days is enormously important work, but we do not need to fear our own limitations. Pope Francis tells us, "[God] comes to assist us in our weakness. And his help consists in helping us accept his presence and closeness to us.
