3 from J acob s W ell Dear Friends in the Lord, I am grateful for the positive response I received last week as I spoke about the financial realities we face as a parish community. If you did not have a chance to look at the Annual Report you can view it on the parish web site. I pray that we can inspire those who currently do not give on a regular basis to consider taking that leap of faith. Every contribution makes a difference. This week we celebrate two great feasts: the Solemnity of All Saints and the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, also known as All Souls Day. The Church teaches that "canonized saints were not perfect human beings when they walked on earth. However, they were 'set aside for a higher purpose, no longer common or everyday but special and unique.'" When we read of the lives of the saints we learn that many of them were persecuted for their faith. Some overcame great sins, like Saint Augustine, and others left everything behind to follow Christ, like Saint Francis of Assisi, who is the model for the Renew My Church initiative in our Archdiocese. The lives of the saints can inspire us on our own journey of faith. As Pope Francis said, "In God s great plan, every detail is important, even our humble little witness and those everyday saints who live their faith with simplicity in their daily lives." The Solemnity of All Saints reminds us of the great call we have received and the type of life Jesus envisioned for his disciples. On November 2nd the Church celebrates the Feast of All Souls, when we remember all who have died. During the month of November, Catholics continue to pray for the deceased, trusting them to God s loving mercy. For most Catholics, the idea of praying for the deceased is really second nature. We have blessing prayers for the body of someone who has died, we have wake services, funeral Masses, graveside services, and often memorial Masses on the anniversary of someone s death. For some people, this doesn t appear to make much sense. Once someone has passed on, they re in God s hands, so what s the point in all that prayer? They re facing God s judgment, so what can our prayers accomplish anyway? Well, we believe they can accomplish a lot. Catholics believe in a state of being called Purgatory. Without going into too much detail, this means that when we die some of us aren t yet ready for heaven but aren t evil enough to face eternal damnation. Purgatory is that period of purification necessary before we re ready to face God s glory. In part, our prayers for the deceased assist the dead in their purification and ask God to show mercy to those souls. But our prayers for the deceased are not only prayers of supplication. They are also prayers of praise, which remind us of God s goodness and mercy. If you listen closely to the prayers at a Catholic funeral, you ll hear a clear expression of our hope in the resurrection. As Christ rose from the dead, so will we rise with him at the end of time. Clean the Church Day Saturday, November 18, 9:00 AM to Noon Take ownership of your church by helping us clean it. We want to be ready for our Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas guests. We ll thoroughly clean the floor, the pews, mop boards and altar area. Our focus is the pews and their cushions. Bring your vacuums with upholstery attachments, some time and elbow grease. Need service hours? This qualifies! Come when you can that morning, and stay for as long as you can. Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them, O Lord A memorial for the remembrance of the dead has been placed near the vigil candles in church. There you will find our Book of the Dead. You are welcome to add the names of deceased loved ones you would like remembered during the month of November. Surrounding the Book of the Dead are photographs and other mementos of those who have gone before us. If you would like to add a remembrance, please write the name of the person to be remembered, plus your name and telephone number on the back or bottom of a photograph or other memento and place your memorial item on the table. You may retrieve your memorial after November 26, Thanksgiving Day. October is Respect Life Month Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry

4 Featured CD for October The Jesus Question by Matthew Kelly Jesus was walking along the road one day with his disciples when he asked them two questions. The first question: "Who do people say that I am?" The second question: "Who do you say that I am?" Matthew Kelly calls this second question THE JESUS QUESTION. How you answer this question will affect every aspect of your life. In this presentation, beloved Catholic author and speaker Matthew Kelly encourages listeners to rediscover the real Jesus by presenting a life-changing habit that will help us all answer THE JESUS QUESTION. Feature CDs can be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material. Little Church Basement Update As a result of the torrential rains that fell in mid-july, the basement of our Little Church experienced flood damage. Repairs began in August and we are making steady progress. We have also completed a number of other drainage fixes, inside and out, to reduce the chances of a repeat event. We and our contractors are striving mightily to make the Little Church basement available for use by our PADS ministry beginning on November 8 th, even as other repairs to the space continue into December. Had this work been a scheduled project, we would have begun in early April and not late August, with much of the planning done beforehand. But Mother Nature had other ideas and so we have had to make the best of the circumstances. We can be glad, though, that a large portion of the expense is covered by insurance. However, there is still a significant amount of work that must be funded by St. Mary. We thank those impacted for their patience.

Lenoir proposes that the art of giving and receiving love is at the heart of growing old gracefully. Research shows that being in a loving relationship quiets the demons of depression and despair. So, if you want to be healthy, be loving. Jesus would agree. The rabbis of Jesus' day argued about which was the greatest commandment of the six hundred thirteen in the Torah. When the Pharisees asked Jesus, he answered that what God wanted most from the chosen people who had been liberated from slavery and called to live in a covenantal relationship was a return of the love God showed to them. This love has two faces: loving God totally and loving one another as one loves oneself. Loving is a contagious activity. If you are loved, you tend to be loving. Paul is sounding this note when he writes to the Thessalonians about how they became imitators of him and his fellow evangelizers Timothy and Silvanus, and of the Lord himself, receiving the word and living in faith, joy, and love for each other, because they believed in God's love for them, revealed in Christ. Our love must flow outward in compassionate generosity. The Lord called on Israel to show its love by not oppressing aliens, not wronging weak orphans and defenseless widows, and not extorting the poor by demanding interest on loans. No less is asked of those who have received the Holy Spirit and live in community with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That's us. Love one another. --James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. 7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer This harvest season of the year is an opportune time to reflect on how we are personally helping to grow the Kingdom of God through our stewardship of the gifts entrusted to us by our Creator. Too often the word stewardship gets equated solely with money. Sure, stewardship involves the use of money but it is much more than that. How we use our time and talent are critical pieces too, not simply a smoke screen for the dollars and cents aspect. I think our instinctive Ugh! response to this topic is due to the fact that we know deep down inside that our attitudes and level of sharing miss the mark by a wide margin. Please bear with me for a few minutes. One cannot have a truly meaningful discussion of stewardship unless you begin with the fundamental mindset and spirituality that is its foundation and motivation: Stewardship is first and foremost an exercise in gratitude sprung from a thankful heart that recognizes the countless unearned blessings we have received from God, our Father. We like to think that we have pulled ourselves up by our own bootstraps. We know how hard we have had to work in order to obtain whatever professional and material success we may enjoy. It has taken untold hours of toil to get our college degree(s), or to climb the corporate food chain, or to build our own business/career. Thus, we often fall into the trap of believing that we have earned everything we have and everything we have achieved. Wrong!!!! Who among us earned the privilege of living in 21 st century America? And exactly how did we acquire the innate physical talents and mental aptitudes that enable us to excel at our chosen professions and vocations? Where have we earned the privilege of even having life itself? The fact of the matter is that we haven t!! All that we have begins as a gift from God. Oh, sure, we may have added our own efforts on top of his gifts, but all of these efforts would amount to nothing were it not for what we have been given by God to start with. Stewardship says that out of gratitude we owe back to God and his People a healthy share of the blessings we have received. Our time is not just our own it has been given to us to build up the community. Our talents are not our own they have been given to us to enrich the lives of others. Our treasure is not meant to be ours alone it is to be shared for the needs of our extended Christian family and those who have little. Yet we withhold our time because we say we have more important things to do. (More important than serving God and the Gospel?!?) We allow our insecurities and lethargy to prevent us from offering our talents to the community. And we allow our stinginess and fear of rainy days to restrain our giving. Stewardship first calls us to possess a spirit of thanks and gratitude for what we have, and to trust in God s providence. When we gratefully recognize that we have received in abundance, we will be moved to act generously ourselves. Next week I will address the subject of money. We pour the majority of our waking hours into earning it, saving it, investing it, and spending it. Yet, some regard it as taboo to discuss this fundamental aspect of life in the context of our life as disciples. We need to get over this aversion. In fact, Jesus spoke of the use of money and possessions in more than half of his parables and more frequently than he spoke of any topic other than the Kingdom of God. If you don t think this topic has an important place in discussing and living our faith, your complaint doesn t go to me. If you wish to contact me, just send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com. Halloween and All Saints Halloween is the eve of Hallowmass, better known to modern Christians as All Saints Day. Hallowmass celebrates God s harvesting into heaven the faithful of every age, culture and walk of life. It is a day of glorious rejoicing. Saints are people who, by their joyful service, have extended the love of God to others. The Roman martyrology the list of the saints officially recognized as such by the church contains over ten thousand names. And those are only the saints whose names we remember! All Saints Day also remembers those holy people whom no one but God any longer knows. The reading for the day from the Book of Revelation describes a great multitude that no one could count. The abundance of the harvest of souls is perfectly suited to observance in the northern hemisphere in late autumn. That s why in North America All Saints Day and Halloween are brightened with corn shocks, pumpkins, apples, nuts and other signs of nature s bounty. The American tradition of Halloween ghost-and-goblin madness comes from Celtic lands, where the spirits of the dead were thought to roam the earth for one night before winter began. To ward off their fear of the supernatural, people sat around huge bonfires, telling stories and sharing the fruits of the harvest. Children were sent round to beg for fuel for the fire. Although the practice of trick-or-treating has its roots in pre-christian Celtic tradition, it would be a mistake to write off the practice as devil worship. In Christ, all things have been made new. And so we dress as ghosts and goblins to laugh at the devil, who has lost ultimate power over God s beloved children. In Mexico, especially in the southern state of Oaxaca, families go and tend the graves of their loved ones at this time of year. In the middle of Halloween night, they have a fiesta with masks, food, sweets (like miniature skulls made of candy) and bunches upon bunches of marigolds all by the light of candles in the cemetery! Those who have gone before us, marked with the sign of faith, are still members of the family!
