1 JUNE 19, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME A Blessing for Fathers We bless you and we praise you, God of our fathers! You are the God of Adam, father of the human family. You are the God of Abraham, our father in faith who was ready and willing to give up everything to be faithful to you. You are the God of Isaac, who was born of laughter and old age, and the God of Jacob, whose clever trick gained an inheritance for twelve tribes of sons and daughters. You are the God of Jesse, from whose loins a nation sprang, a sturdy family tree of monarchs, prophets and priests. You are the God and Father of Israel, your child whom you love with all your heart. You are the God of Zechariah, who fathered the Baptist and taught him the Torah, and of Joachim, the grandfather of Jesus. You are the God of Joseph, who loved and raised Jesus as his own. You are the God and Father of Jesus, and our Father in heaven, too: Holy is your Name! We thank you, God, for the gift of our fathers, for grandfathers and godfathers and fathers-in-law, too. Send your Holy Spirit upon our fathers, in whose laps we were cradled, on whose knees we were bounced, by whose hands we were fed, instructed, at times corrected, in whose company we learned to work and play and pray, at whose side we hear your word and celebrate your mysteries. Heal their pains and disappointments. Forgive all that needs to be forgiven. Give to them the good that they have given others. Welcome into your arms those who have died. Fill this world, O God, with a father s love! We ask this your Son Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray to you as Abba. He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, who is Father of the poor, Copyright 2002 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications, 1800 North Hermitage Avenue, Chicago IL ; ; Text by David Philippart. They were not very different from any other Jew of their day. Indeed, given our expectations and hopes for our own leaders, we would not have answered Jesus much differently ourselves. They were waiting for the Messiah to come, and once he came, happy days would be here again. They expected the Messiah or Anointed One to come in power and might. He was going to be a liberator like Moses who led God s people out of slavery, and he was going to be a great king like David, who brought the people of the northern kingdom of Israel and the people of the southern kingdom of Judah into one nation. The Messiah would usher in a new era. It was going to be great! Imagine their surprise when Jesus rebukes Peter for saying that he is The Christ [Messiah] of God (Luke 9:20). Then Jesus goes on to say that he must suffer greatly, be rejected by their religious leaders, and be killed and on the third day be raised (9:22). (I wonder if they even heard the last part about being raised.) But worse yet, he goes on to say that they must be willing to deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow him. This Messiah would not get many votes, even now. But it is through faith in Christ Jesus, Anointed One of God, that we have become children of God. And we are called to clothe ourselves with Christ (see Galatians 3:27). Which is a more pleasant way of saying, take up [your] cross daily (Luke 9:23). James A. Wallace, c.ss.r. 5 Deacon Deliberations by Deacon Gary Kupsak Happy Father s Day Father s Day, as it is known, is celebrated to pay a tribute to all the fathers of the world. In short, it is dedicated to fatherhood, the second most wonderful relationship after motherhood. While fathers will most often do anything and everything in the best interest of their children, this day allows kids (of all ages) to pay their sincere admiration and respect towards their dad. It lets them express their hidden love and affection they have always felt for their fathers, which oftentimes they do not reveal (once the kids are in high school, especially the boys, kissing your dad is not too cool ). So, on this Father s Day, if you still may need to buy a greeting card, another tool or some other gift for good ole dad, maybe it would be a good idea to write or give dad a short and heartfelt poem explaining what you feel is the meaning of his being a dad. If you re not so good at creating your own words, the following poem may be of some help. Simply cut on the lines and give it to your dad, then watch him melt before your eyes What Is a Dad? A Dad is a person, who is loving and kind, And o en he knows what you have on your mind. He s someone who listens, suggests and defends, A Dad can be one of your very best friends. He s proud of your triumphs, but when things go wrong, A Dad can be pa ent and helpful and strong. In all that you do a Dad s love plays a part, There s always a place for him deep in your heart. And each year that passes, you re even more glad, More grateful and proud just to call him your Dad. Thank you Dad, for listening and caring, Thank you Dad for giving and sharing. But especially just for being my Dad, I just can t tell you, how that makes me glad! What a blessing it is to be a father! So to all you fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, stepfathers, priestly fathers and all men or women who have acted as fathers, HAPPY FATHER S DAY! PRAYER FOR RENEW MY CHURCH Lord Jesus, you speak to us today as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time you call us and say: "Renew my Church." Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly, to listen to each other attentively, to imagine our future boldly, to discern your direction wisely, to persevere in your holy will courageously, to stay together in charity, to surrender our own plans readily, to embrace the greater good, to hand on your gifts to future generations. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer Happy Father's Day to all the Dads who have given us life and to all the men in our lives who have taught us how to live! Here is some humor to lighten your celebration of Dads. First, here s one of my favorite Mark Twain quotes: When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. Former New York Governor Mario Cuomo wrote: I talk and talk and talk, and I haven't taught people in 50 years what my father taught by example in one week. Last Sunday, I had the special joy and privilege of baptizing my third grandchild. Little Laura Olivia Fischer was born into this world a few days before Christmas (in São Paulo, Brazil, where her Mom, Dad, brother and sister are serving as Maryknoll Missioners). It is a great joy in every family to welcome a new baby into the fold. This is true for our biological families and for our family of faith. There are some joys that lose their luster with repetition; this is one that NEVER does! In a world where the joy and sanctity of human life is abused in countless ways (war, terrorism, murders, poverty, abortion, executions, prejudice, rape, etc.), you and I need to be beacons and examples of the divine value of life. As Jesus declared, I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. (John 10:10) All of us who have been baptized have been intimately joined to the life and sacrifice of Christ. But do we try to get by with a minimalist approach that in effect asks, What s the least I can get away with? Is there some part of our life that we refuse to give over to the Gospel? Perhaps our politics? Our economics? Our use of time? There is nothing about Christ and his Gospel that is minimalist. To borrow a poker phrase, Jesus wants us all in. If we do not accept a full share of the work of the Gospel, if we withhold a part of our lives from being transformed by God s Word, we cannot hope to be given a share in eternal life. Baptism unites us with the person of Jesus Christ, with his mission, and with his community of disciples. Baptism is not an isolated ceremony or a one-time commitment, but a way of life, a public lifetime commitment that requires our total engagement every day in every way. Given the erosion of religion in our culture, given the abuse of religion by some to pass judgement (and even violence) on others, you and I must do better as disciples in giving witness to the role Jesus plays in our lives. We must be able to readily answer the question Jesus puts to the Apostles in today s Gospel: But who do YOU say that I am? It is from this start of intimacy with the person of Jesus that the rest of the Christian life flows: mission, community, prayer & worship, evangelization, catechesis, and the call to holiness. In other words, we need to do a much better job of explaining the who and why of Christianity and not just the how, what and when. Christianity is a relationship with a person and a people, not a philosophy of life or a club. We desperately need to give a more compelling witness to this in every dimension of our lives. Jesus Christ and his Gospel cannot be contained within the four walls of church on Sundays. Thanks to all our Dads, those here and those who have returned to their Heavenly Father. We are grateful for your sacrifices, love and example. May you enjoy the blessings and peace you so richly deserve! If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the parish office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com.
