JUNE 15, 2014 TRINITY SUNDAY Blessing of Fathers Blessed are You, Creator of all life. Today, we honor our fathers, and we thank you for the many blessings we have received from their generous lives. Their love for us has been a sign of your divine affection; their concern for our needs and welfare, a mirror of your holy providence. As we remember our fathers, we praise You, the Father of all people. Living God s Word The Corinthians didn t always show forth the love of the Trinity in their community. That is why Paul reminds them to mend your ways. How shall we respond to Paul s encouragement to agree with one another, live in peace so that the God of love and peace will be with us today? Copyright 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Bless our fathers this day with your strength and wisdom. Grant them happiness and good health, peace and integrity of life. Bless them with joy, love, laughter, and pride in their children and surround them with good friends and helpful neighbors. May they, who lifted up their children in this life, be lifted up one day to your divine embrace: there, for all eternity, may they rejoice with family and friends, where Christ reigns forever and ever. Amen.

From the Pastor s Desk It s time to say, Good-bye. Over the last few weeks, family, friends, parishioners and colleagues have asked me how I feel about moving on from St. Mary of the Annunciation for a new assignment. It s a difficult question to answer because there are so many different emotions that arise with this move. St. Mary has been my home for the past 18 years. When I arrived in the parish in January, 1996, St. Mary-Fremont Center was a small community with a rich history and a huge potential for growth. Our only place to worship was the little white church that seats 220. The only place to hold a meeting was the basement of the little church. There was virtually no pastoral staff to work with. I knew right from the start that this assignment was going to be something quite different from what most priests would expect upon assuming a pastorate. My intuition was right on target. Over the past 18 years I have witnessed enormous growth and development, not just in numbers but in the depth and breadth of the spiritual lives of parishioners who would show themselves to be faithful disciples of Jesus, engaging in many different ministries and reaching out in mission. Not only has the parish grown and matured, but I too have changed, as I ve been inspired by the lives of so many and challenged and stretched to give my all in service to a people who have become like family to me. As I ve reflected upon these past 18 years, there are three words that describe my disposition as I prepare to move on from St. Mary: Gratitude, Humility, Hopefulness. Gratitude Where do I begin to list the gifts and graces of these past 18 years? The memories are so rich. There are the obvious big events: building and dedicating a new church and parish center, founding Frassati Catholic Academy, the erection of a magnificent bell tower that links the past with the future. There are the annual Pork and Corn Roasts, adult formation events with Scott Hahn and Matthew Kelly, the pilgrimages to the Holy Land and to our sister parish, St. Wolfgang, in Hausen, Germany. I m grateful for a wonderful professional staff, the good priests and deacons I ve ministered with, for a growing youth ministry, for beautiful liturgies, for Lenten faith sharing groups, for the top-notch Bible study series, for the Fellowship of St. Joseph and Mary s Circle, for a growing sense of mission, for a strong Ministry of Care, a multifaceted Religious Education program and a school that prepares tomorrow s leaders. The litany could go on and it does in my heart but for this purpose we ll keep the list brief. The joys and happy memories are not limited to big events or the flourishing ministries. The greatest joy is the people I have come to know in my 18 years as pastor. I will forever be thankful for the simple acts of kindness and gestures of friendship and support which have meant so much to me and have carried me through the difficult times. In our recent celebration of Confirmation at St. Mary, one of the confimands said to me, Father Ron, you baptized me, gave me my First Communion and now you are with me for Confirmation and graduation. You are the only pastor I know. Not many pastors have the privilege of witnessing firsthand the growing cycle of his parishioners like I have, life events punctuated by the sacraments. Sharing the joys and sorrows of so many has shaped my own soul. I baptized your children, anointed your sick, officiated at your weddings, absolved your sins, buried your dead. This has been a grace that remains a priceless blessing. The Sunday Eucharist has been the centerpiece of all my pastoral experiences at St. Mary. It s been at the weekend Masses that I ve met most of you and you have come to know me. Through the seasons and the feasts and the ordinary weekends we have prayed together and shared Christ s Table as God continues to make of us a church of living stones. Humility Why humility? Because I know that all the good which I have experienced and any good which I may have accomplished at St. Mary was ultimately a gift of God through the working of His Spirit. I never dreamed in my seminary days that I would have the opportunity to build a new church, found Frassati Academy, call people to mission and witness the kind of deep faith and discipleship that I have seen in you. When I ve sat on my front porch and looked across the pond to a church that rose out of a bean field, I m filled with awe and wonder not just for the beauty of the building but for all it stands for, a people of faith, a people with a mission. I am humbled too as I acknowledge my failures and inability to accomplish everything I thought I would. I am humbled when I think of individuals I was unable to serve, those I disappointed or who left angry because of decisions I had to make as pastor. I feel sad when I think of parishioners who at one point were very active and then all of a sudden were gone. To anyone whom I may have inadvertently hurt or offended, I beg your forgiveness. I am humbled by my own humanness which constantly reminds me that I am not perfect, not a superman pastor, and certainly not God. It s hard to leave St. Mary knowing that there are

some things I m not going to complete before July 1 st. But once again I am humbled as I realize I am only one man in a long line of pastors who have given their best and made their own unique contributions for the well-being of the parish. Hopefulness I am hopeful first of all for St. Mary of the Annunciation because over the past 18 years we have laid a firm foundation upon which future generations can build. We re not a perfect parish; there aren t any. Every parish is in the making and on the march as a pilgrim people. But we have a strong worshipping community, a growing corps of mission-minded disciples, and a vision for furthering the Kingdom of God, not just our own interests. The appointment of Father Jerry Jacob as St. Mary s 17 th resident pastor gives me hope because your new pastor is someone who understands what we ve been trying to accomplish at St. Mary. He will be able to take our vision to the next stage. He brings a fresh perspective, his own personal gifts and passion for ministry. As he and I have talked about the parish in this transition time, I ve remained confident that this will be a seamless pastoral transition. Welcome Fr. Jacob with an open mind and support him with your love and prayers as he gets the lay of the land. I can t think of a better priest to be your pastor at this time in St. Mary s history. I am moving on to my new assignment as the Cardinal s Delegate for Parish Transformation with a sense of hope. In my new role I will be resourcing parishes in Cook and Lake Counties as they participate in Parish Transformation. After forty-two years as a priest, I still have a passion for parish life and ministry. What I am being called to do is to use my wealth of experience to stir the pastoral imagination of parish teams and to encourage them to be more vibrant and more effective as Catholic parishes today. Ah, yes, it s a tall order, but I am hopeful because you have taught me a great deal about parish life and the needs of Catholics today. Humbled by my own personal limitations, I will rely on the help of the Holy Spirit for the guidance and inspiration that the Spirit alone can give. I will still serve in the area as a Dean. I will make St. Theresa Parish in Palatine my residence where I will also celebrate Masses and share in the pastoral work of the parish to the extent that my other duties permit. It s only a 30 minute drive from St. Mary to St. Theresa, so you re welcome to come for Mass some weekend in the future. Thank You It s a bit of a challenge to start over again, but I leave St. Mary ever grateful for the memories of the past 18 years. In one sense I can never leave St. Mary because there will always be a part of me that will be at St. Mary. We re all on a journey back to God. Thank you for being such good companions on the way. Let us remember one another in the celebration of the Eucharist where the Lord promises a communion with him and with one another that is everlasting. Fr. Ron Lewinski Commemorative Parish History Books The commemorative Sesquicentennial parish history is now available in the parish office during normal business hours. "Nothing is Impossible with God: the Story of St. Mary of the Annunciation, Fremont Center, Illinois" commemorates our rich history and spiritual heritage from the very beginning of the Catholic community in Fremont Center to the events of our Sesquicentennial year. The richly illustrated narrative honors the faithful witness of generations and the abundant blessings our parish has enjoyed over the past 150 years and should inspire us to make our own contribution to the proud history of our parish and be faithful stewards of the sacred inheritance we have received from our ancestors in Christ. Available at the parish office, $ For anyone interested in a more extensive chronology of key events in the history of the parish and Fremont Center with a particular focus on the German families who pioneered the parish, "The Chronicle of St. Mary of the Annunciation" is also available. This exhaustively-researched volume features never-before-seen excerpts from the correspondence of early parishioners, land maps, newspaper clippings, photos and more and is available on a print-on-demand basis at: Both of these attractive volumes are a great addition to any parishioner s library and also make great gifts! Both books are brought to you by the Sesquicentennial History Committee. Happy reading! Fr. Ron Lewinski Farewell Mass Sunday, June 29, 11:30 AM reception following Registration Weekend June 21 & 22, 2014 Do you need to register as a member of St. Mary Parish? Come to the parish office at the far end of the narthex after Mass and we ll help make you an official member of Saint Mary of the Annunciation!

During our Sesquicentennial year the History Committee presents weekly selections from the treasure chest of our precious past. A contractor was consulted by Fr. Laukemper, as it was his desire to have the church interior plastered. At his request, they went down to look at the Peabody Estate, and especially at the plastering there. The object of this visit was to impress on the contractor the kind of workmanship the Pastor wanted. The contractor said there was nothing done at the estate that could not be done as well or better here. The corrugated tin was removed from the ceiling and walls of the church interior. Then it was lathed, and the plastering was done in a most satisfactory manner. Consortium Seeks Participants in Forming Board of Specified Jurisdiction The Catholic Consortium of Lake County (CCLC) comprises three schools and three parishes: the schools are Frassati Catholic Academy, St. Mary of the Annunciation, and Transfiguration; the parishes are Santa Maria del Popolo, St. Mary of the Annunciation, and Transfiguration. A Board of Specified Jurisdiction is being developed for the CCLC to help with governance, specifically in the areas of: FINANCE AND FACILITIES, MARKETING AND ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT, and ADVANCEMENT/FUNDRAISING. Participants are sought who bring experience in the above-listed areas. Watch for information in next week s bulletin about applying to serve on this Consortium Board. On Tuesday, May 27, St. Mary students had a special opportunity to learn more about animals native to Illinois. The Illinois Conservation Police brought a wildlife education trailer to the school, so students could view animal furs and mounts. This was especially exciting to the First graders and other students currently learning about animals in their habitats. F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer Happy Father's Day to all the Dads who have given us life and to all the men in our lives who have taught us how to live! Here is some humor to lighten your celebration of Dads. First, there s one of my favorite Mark Twain quotes: When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. Protestant preacher King Duncan once observed: Children go through four fascinating stages. First they call you Da-Da. Then they call you Daddy. As they mature they call you Dad. Finally, they call you collect. Now, a few thoughts about the Holy Trinity St. Augustine, while puzzling over the doctrine of the Trinity, was walking along the beach one day when he observed a young boy with a bucket, running back and forth to pour water into a little hole. Augustine asked, "What are you doing?" The boy replied, "I'm trying to put the ocean into this hole." Then Augustine realized that he had been trying to put an infinite God into his finite mind. All sorts of logical devices have been tried to help our feeble minds conceptualize the mystery of the Trinity. (Think of St. Patrick and the thee-leaf clover, for example.) Countless volumes of theology have been written over the last 20 centuries on this subject. But try as we might, we will never be able to intellectually grasp a truth that comes from a reality superior to the one we currently inhabit. Yet despite our lack of comprehension, we accept this tenet of our faith simply because Jesus told us of the intimate union of Father, Son, and Spirit. The true measure of faith is to accept and believe even when we do not understand. (To require something to be logical is to make logic superior to God!) Why should we care about the Trinity? Does it really matter? First and foremost, we need to embrace every truth that our Creator makes known to us. We need to absorb everything we can about the One we love. Second, we should appreciate that intimate love and inseparable community are intrinsic to the nature of God. Therefore, such love and community should be at the heart of who we are too. Here are some other quotes and analogies on the Trinity. But, of course, in the end we re left with a hole and an ocean... True prayer is the living experience of the Holy Trinity. The Spirit's breathing, the Son's intercession, the Father's will, these three become one in us. Andrew Murray Tell me how it is that in this room there are three candles and but one light, and I will explain to you the mode of the divine existence. John Wesley A pretzel has three holes. The first hole is not the second hole, the second hole is not the third hole, but the same dough ties all three holes together. One pretzel, three holes. There s one God made up of three distinct persons, the Father, the Son, and the Spirit, but they re all tied together by the same essence or the same divine nature. The same attributes, perfections, and descriptions of one belongs to the others. Tony Evans May the God who is Creator, Savior and Sustainer enfold us in his community of love forever. 6 Consider St. Mary Preschool "I loved seeing my daughter and the other children grow in maturity and confidence during their time in Preschool. They have learned that they CAN do the tasks required independently and are definitely ready for Kindergarten. Smartest move our family has made in regards to education is enrolling our children in the Preschool program at St. Mary of the Annunciation School." --Mrs. Kott, parent Priestless Weekdays Coming June Every three years the entire Chicago Presbyterate (all the priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago) gather for a clergy convocation in St. Charles, IL. Convened by Cardinal George, all the priests of the Archdiocese are expected to participate in these days of prayer and reflection, inspiration and ongoing education. We will not celebrate morning Mass on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, June 17, 18 and 19. We will have 8:00 AM Communion services on these days that include the prayers and scriptures of the day. Mass will still be offered at Marytown at 7:00 AM and 12:00 Noon. During these days everyone is asked to pray for the Cardinal and his priests and for future vocations to the priesthood. Pastoral emergencies will still be received and channeled through the parish office. Three and Four Year Old Preschool ends a great school year with a celebration program. Students sang songs and enjoyed refreshments with their parents. Each preschool student received a Memory Book (portfolio) of work they have completed throughout the year. St. Mary of the Annunciation Grief Support for Adults he program is open to adult men and women who have suffered the loss of a friend or relative through death. It will be run by archdiocesan trained facilitators who can help you in your own journey of life without your loved one. Please call to register or just come to see what this ministry offers. This will also be your chance to ask questions and get a registration form. If you are unable to attend, forms will also be in the office or you can fill one out at our first meeting. Our next grief support group will gather in the Hospitality Room on the following Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon: June 21st, June 28th, July 12th, and July 19th. 7 ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Office of the Archbishop Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In dioceses where many people are dependent on the Church for social and pastoral support, as in regions where Catholics are persecuted for their faith, Pope Francis extends his charity to those most in need. Our participation in the annual Peter s Pence Collection provides us the opportunity to be a witness of charity, as His Holiness encouraged us to be in his Easter message. In addition, our financial support of this annual collection will assist Pope Francis in strengthening diocese, religious orders and struggling communities of faith. I thank you for your generosity. May our Lord continue to bless you and your loved ones as you share your faith and charity in your parish, the Archdiocese of Chicago and throughout the Universal Church. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours. Sincerely in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M. I. 150 th Anniversary Float! As one of our ongoing Sesquicentennial events we will have a float in this year s Mundelein 4 th of July Parade. This year s parade will take place on Sunday July 6 th and we need your support! We need handy men and women to help construct and decorate the float. If you are handy or have an artistic flair please contact rrehkamp@stmota.org or We are looking to the build the float the last week in June or the first couple of days in July. Thank you for your support and hope to see you at the parade! Featured CD for June Born Again? Faith Alone? by Stephen Ray In one of his most focused talks to date, Stephen Ray discusses salvation, the authentic biblical understanding of being "born again," and how we are saved by faith, but not "faith alone." With great humor and doctrinal depth, he goes all the way back to Abraham to show that we are saved by faith and obedience to all that Christ demands of us. Feature CDs can be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material. Reflecting on God s Word Can you remember a time when you heard an a cappella choir sing in perfect harmony? Perhaps you have sung in a choir like that. The many voices blend into one voice, the many parts into unified chords, the many notes into a single song. If we can imagine that harmony for an instant, we might hear an echo of the perfect harmony uniting our one God. The three-part harmony in God sings a single song of love. It sings of the merciful, faithful love of the Father who nurtures and protects this weak, beloved human family. It sings of the self-giving love of Jesus that liberates us from slavishly repeating our sins. It sings of the unifying love of the Holy Spirit that binds us together in love and unity and peace. As we imagine that harmonious hymn of praise, we might also hear a summons to live in the harmony that the Holy Spirit empowers in us. Our God s love is so powerful that it resounds in the Christian community and invites the whole world to sing along in the never-ending hymn of love. 8 Another Reason to Choose St. Mary School and Frassati Catholic Academy 100% 2013 Terra Nova: Archdiocese of Chicago 50% National Average 3rd Grade 5th Grade 0% Reading Language Math Science Social Studies 7th Grade All students in Archdiocese of Chicago Elementary Schools take Terra Nova Standardized Tests, developed by CTB/ McGraw Hill, in the spring of their 3rd, 5th, and 7th grade years. Millions of other students across the country take the same tests and, by comparing their scores, a national norm is established, which indicates the progress that students at different grade levels are making. This national norm is set at 50. Scores above 50 indicate that students are progressing more rapidly than the norm; scores below 50 indicate that they are progressing less rapidly. A score that is 7 or more points higher than the norm shows a significant difference in progress. As the graph above illustrates, students in Archdiocesan schools progressed at a significantly higher rate than the norm of all schools, and their scores generally continued to increase as they moved through the grades. Individual schools have their own scores and can share them with families who are interested. A Frequently Asked Question: Families often ask us why we don t use the same tests as the public schools in Illinois. They would like to be able to see test scores as an apples-to-apples comparison. We would like that as well and we have asked the Illinois State Board of Education to allow us to take the same tests they administer to public school students. So far, they have refused to let us do so. But we will continue to work toward that goal. Information provided by the Office of Catholic Schools 5th Grade Class on Their Way to Frassati St. Mary of the Annunciation 5th Graders fondly remember all their years at St. Mary school, while looking forward to transitioning to middle school. All students in this class will attend Frassati Catholic Academy in the Fall. Hospital Visits and Anointing of the Sick Our pastoral staff along with our Ministers of Care try our best to visit parishioners who are in the hospital. Under the law hospitals and health care providers must obtain patients consent to share information about them. Therefore patients must state their preference regarding visits from their pastors or representatives from their church. We do not receive notice from the hospitals about parishioners who are patients. If you would like someone to visit you while you are hospitalized you need to call the parish office during your stay or, if possible, even before you enter the hospital. On several occasions we have received a message about a hospitalized parishioner, only to discover upon visiting even within 24 hours of the call that he or she had already been discharged. If you anticipate entering the hospital for surgery, for example, we would be happy to anoint you with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick after any weekday Mass or you can telephone the parish office to arrange a convenient time. Don t miss out! Register today, St. Mary Seniors The next meeting and luncheon will be at 11:30AM on Monday, July 7, 2014 at the Lake House in Saddlebrook. The cost for members lunch is $6.00 and nonmembers $ Lunch will be served at 12:30pm. If you have any questions, please call Joyce Ladewig at

Cub Scouts Camp Out Cub Scout Pack 295 out of St. Mary and Santa Maria parishes would like to thank St. Mary for hosting its spring camp out over Memorial Weekend. On Friday night, cub scouts and their families pitched tents in the field, conducted their year-end Pack Meeting awards ceremony, and roasted s'mores over a portable fire pit. We would like to thank Father Nate for leading us a blessing that evening. On Saturday, the cub scouts cooked their own breakfast, participated in Minute To Win It scout challenges and fished in the St. Mary pond. Thank you to the parish for allowing us to use this beautiful location for the camp out. The boys and families had a lot of fun together while developing their scouting skills. Donors Needed! Help Hungry Children of Waukegan this Summer Seventy eight percent of children in Waukegan rely on free or reduced lunches throughout the school year. When summer comes, these children loose up to 10 meals per week. Help feed these hungry kids this summer by sponsoring a child at the BEA- CON PLACE LUNCH BUNCH AND BACKPACK PROGRAM! Each donation of $75 will sponsor one child for the 9 week lunch, day camp and backpack program. Children will enjoy a nutritious meal and stay for games, crafts, sports, water fun and more and every Thursday they will receive a backpack of food to take home for the weekend. Last year more than 450 different children attended these programs and were served nearly 3,000 lunches and left with backpacks filled with more than 12,000 meals. Many children in this community continue to go hungry and we expect the demand to be even higher in 2014 for these important programs. Please help us, feed hungry kids! Donations may be sent to: BEACON PLACE 603 S. McAlister Waukegan, IL Questions or want to volunteer? Life in the Trinity The name of the Trinity is, without a doubt, the most familiar sacred name to us. We speak it every time we make the sign of the cross, and it forms the heart of our Creed. Trinity Sunday is a good day, however, to stop and reflect on the unique role of each of the three persons we name so often in the Trinity and in our own lives. When we celebrate the Eucharist on Sunday, we come together as the Body of Christ through our baptism, and through the power of the Holy Spirit we offer the whole prayer of the Mass to God the Father. This presence of the Trinity does not stop when we leave church on Sunday. We are always and everywhere members of the Body, and every thing we do as members of that Body is empowered by the Holy Spirit, all of it offered to the glory of our loving Father. Take a moment each day this week to reflect on how the persons of the Trinity were present to you during the day, and how other people came to see the presence of the Trinity in your witness to the Good News. Catholic Consortium Seeks Business Manager The Catholic Consortium of Lake County is looking for a parttime business manager. If you are planning to be married at St. Mary of the Annunciation, the first thing to do is to secure the date and time of your wedding at the parish. This should be done before booking a place for your reception. To secure a date and time for the wedding liturgy the engaged couple needs to make an appointment with one of the parish priests or deacons at which time a date and time for the wedding will be confirmed. We cannot schedule a wedding over the phone. To assist engaged couples in preparing for their vocation as a married couple the Church requires a pastoral preparation that includes a Pre-Cana session and participation in FOCCUS, a marriage preparation instrument administered in the months prior to the wedding. St. Mary of the Annunciation also has a helpful planning packet for couples, which is available at the parish office.
