1 OCTOBER 9, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reflecting on God s Word When Jan s son and his buddies were given two weeks notice to move out of their house, Jan proposed that they throw a cleaning/ moving party. She provided the food, drinks, and cleaning supplies. They provided the music and the muscle. The party was a great success. The house got cleaned, the move was completed in one afternoon, and everyone went home happy. Later that week a thank-you card arrived from one of her son s housemates. Thanks for the party, Jan. We couldn t have done it without you. You re the greatest. Adam. Do we take the time to reflect back on each day or do we just keep moving on? Do we recognize the healing in our lives or focus only on the suffering? Do we realize that we couldn t have done it without God or do we attribute our successes to good luck or our own hard work? Do we, like Naaman and the Samaritan leper, make it a habit to express our thanks to God in public praise and in lives of service? Virginia Stillwell Copyright 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. J.S. Paluch. Co. Living God s Word The Eucharist is our habitual, public praise and thanks to God. We give thanks for the gifts of creation and the covenant. We give thanks for the gift of redemption that is ours through Jesus Christ and for the gifts that the Holy Spirit pours out on us. In the Eucharist each of us should also give thanks for the gifts of God in our lives. Copyright 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. The measure has been taken for many centuries, and in some European dioceses it is possible to measure the level of engagement in worship by the population over the course of many centuries. Long ago, it was also the custom to track Easter duty by a statistical report. Penitents would receive a kind of chit at confession, which they would then turn in at their parish church when they received Holy Communion during Easter time. Long ago, of course, Communion was fairly rare in the life of a Catholic Christian, perhaps only once a year. The chits would be tallied by parish priests and reported to the chancery, which in turn would hold on to the records and include the statistics in a report to the Vatican every five years. Nowadays, the October count has proved especially critical in the life of our Church as bishops use the figures to measure the vitality of church life, to sketch parish boundaries, and even to decide when to close, merge, or form new parishes. 3 from J acob s W ell Dear Parishioners, I am both humbled and grateful for the tremendous support and generosity towards the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign. We have reached the halfway mark in terms of our parish goal as our very dedicated executive committee reaches out to more and more parishioners. To learn more about this campaign please consult the link on the parish web site. This weekend the Faith Formation Commission is hosting hospitality and a Ministry fair. I am grateful for the leadership of Sue Matousek, our Director of Religious Education, and all who serve on this commission. I hope you will take some time to learn more about the many ministries and opportunities to grow in our faith. Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry Seminarians at St. Mary Parish This year, we are blessed to have seminarians coming to our parish in various capacities, and I thought I might use this space to introduce them. First, we have been assigned a transitional deacon from the seminary, Dcn. Jeffrey Moore, who will assist at Mass most weekends this year, and probably preach at one Mass a month. Second, the seminary has decided to get the younger seminarians more involved with local parishes this year, so you will see a group of 5 seminarians coming every three to four weeks to participate in various ministries or activities that happen on the weekends. If you see any of these young men, please introduce yourselves and make them feel welcome. Deacon Jeffrey Moore is from the Archdiocese of Seattle and is in his 4 th year of Theology studies. Bosco Ruan is originally from China and is studying for the Diocese of Antwerp in Belgium. He is in his 4 th year of Theology studies. Carlos Ortega is from the Archdiocese of Atlanta and is in his 3 rd year of Theology studies. Maksym Bocer is originally from Poland and is studying for the Diocese of Knoxville, Tennessee. He is in his 2 nd year of Theology studies. Dan Weger is from the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas, and is currently in his 2 nd year of Theology studies. Danny Orris is from the Diocese of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and is currently in his 1 st year of Theology studies. A $350 million campaign for strong parishes, Catholic education and faith formation in the Archdiocese of Chicago Campaign Update We are exceedingly grateful as the people of St. Mary of the Annunciation continue to generously respond to the vision and needs of the To Teach Who Christ Is capital campaign. Only three weeks since the campaign was announced, we continue to build momentum and make excellent progress towards our goal of $2.35 million. So far more than $1,190,500 has been pledged thanks to the very generous commitments of 51 families. We are now halfway to our goal! New pledges are received almost every day. Reaching our goal will depend upon the generosity and sacrifices of hundreds of St. Mary families. We thank you for your enthusiasm, generosity, and prayers. Through this campaign we will support shared education and formation ministries across the Archdiocese as well as address important needs at St. Mary. Our main parish priority is retiring the construction debt that remains from building our beautiful new church, meeting rooms and offices. The Archdiocese will match $1.2 million in parish campaign payments on an extraordinary 3-to-1 basis to completely eliminate our $4.8 million capital debt! Once our debt has been retired, campaign proceeds will be used to repave our crumbling parking lots and renovate the little church kitchen and basement for use by PADS and other parish meetings and functions. As the campaign proceeds, our To Teach Who Christ Is team continues to contact more and more families each week to invite them to participate. When you receive a call, please accept their invitation and prayerfully consider how you might help. Your gift will ensure a vibrant future for St. Mary and for Catholic formation throughout the Archdiocese. For more information about the campaign please visit the TTWCI page on our parish web site. 5 Deacon Deliberations by Deacon Gary Kupsak Remember to Say Please and Thank You I usually don t comment on the Gospel for the particular Sunday that my musings appear in the Sunday Bulletin. I don t want to take away from the homilies that are presented during Mass with my sometimes non-traditional reflections, but this Sunday s Gospel is an exception. The story of the Ten Lepers is one of my favorite passages from Luke, and holds so much wisdom that we can take with us as we move forward on our journey of living as disciples, followers of our Lord Jesus Christ. But first, there s a wonderful story about a little four year old boy who just couldn t wait for his brand new baby sister to come home from the hospital. Couldn t wait to be near her, to talk to her, to touch her very soft skin. But his parents didn t want the little boy to be left alone with her; you know he was only four and they wanted to supervise any visits he had with her. He kept begging to be alone with her, and one night his parents finally relented. The boy tiptoed into the baby s room and sat next to his sister s crib and said: Hey sis, tell me about God I m starting to forget what He s like. Now we may at times, with all that is going on in our lives and the lives of those around us, forget what God is like, but today s Gospel should remind us how much God loves us, how much God is willing to reach out to us, and how he forever came to us through his Son Jesus Christ. So there were these ten despicable guys, outcasts, rejects; who because of their physical condition were at the very bottom of the social barrel. They were so frightening to others that if they were out in public, they had to shout warnings, announce that they were coming, so that people could scurry away from them. They had heard of the mercy and healing powers of Jesus, and found an opportunity to be near where Christ was walking. From quite a distance away from Jesus, they shouted pleadings for mercy. Their wish was granted, but only one of those healed returned to thank their merciful healer, and he was a Samaritan, a foreighner. If we sometimes forget what God is like, this story of the Ten Lepers should remind us how loving and merciful is our Lord and God, and that if we say Please our pleas will be heard. The story should also remind us that thanking our God for all his blessing is something that we should never forget to do, to always remember that He is the source of all things good in our lives and that God never tires of hearing our humble words of thanks. Please Lord, grant us mercy, heal us spiritually and physically in our time of need. Thank you Lord for all you have given us. Never let us forget your mercy and love, and keep us always in your warm embrace. 7 Anointing of the Sick Joined to Christ, Witnesses of Hope and Healing This is the second in a series of articles with information from the USCCB. Anointing of the Sick is the sacrament that is received by those who are ill or suffering. By the sacred anointing and the prayer of the priest, the whole Church commends those who are sick to Christ. The sick person receives the Holy Spirit s gifts of strength, faith, peace, and courage, and his or her suffering is united with the suffering of Christ for the building up of the Church (Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC], nos ). Solidarity with All Who Suffer We care for the sick because we see them as children of God and part of our human family. When one part of the Body of Christ suffers, we all suffer (1 Cor 12:26). The suffering of one impacts everyone. Thus, we are called to solidarity, which is responsibility on the part of everyone with regard to everyone (Pope John Paul II, Sollicitudo Rei Socialis [On Social Concern], no. 38; Pope Benedict XVI, Caritas in Veritate [Charity in Truth], no. 38). By our compassion, we remind those who are sick that [the Church] shares your suffering. She takes it to the Lord, who in turn associates you with his redeeming Passion (Synod of Bishops, Per Concilii Semitas ad Populum Dei Nuntius, no. 12). We are called to comfort, pray for and with, and be in solidarity with all who are sick or suffering. Caring for those who suffer is not a burden, but a gift. Those who care for the sick do holy and important work; they walk with Christ s suffering people and in doing so, serve Christ himself (Mt 25:31-46). Those who minister to the sick and who work to secure decent health care for all become the living sign of Jesus Christ and his Church in showing love towards the sick and suffering (Christifideles Laici, no. 53). Union with Christ s Passion While it is possible that the sacrament could bring physical healing, Anointing of the Sick is primarily about the healing of hope and of the spirit. Above all, the sacrament allows the person who is ill to unite more closely to Christ s Passion. This gives suffering a new meaning: a participation in the saving work of Jesus. This is a powerful witness that is for the good of the whole Church (CCC, nos ). Beacons of Hope Pope John Paul II wrote, Even the sick are sent forth as laborers into the Lord s vineyard (Christifideles Laici, no. 53). As the sick unite their sufferings to those of Christ, they become bearers of the joy of the Holy Spirit in the midst of affliction and witnesses of Christ s Resurrection. Anointing of the Sick testifies to the fact that all are called to participate in the redemption of the world (Sacramentum Caritatis, no. 22). We all have a role in sanctifying and building up the Church, whatever our physical condition. As the Synod of Bishops told an audience of sick and suffering persons, We need you to teach the whole world what love is (Per Concilii Semitas ad Populum Dei Nuntius, no. 12). A Witness to Dignity The sacrament reminds us that each person is made in the image of God and has dignity that remains unchanged, whatever the body suffers. The ministry of those who are sick is a powerful witness to the fact that human dignity is intrinsic and does not increase or decrease based on a person s physical state or abilities. This is why the Church works to protect the life and dignity of the person at every stage of life the embryo, the person suffering from AIDS, the family in poverty, and the person nearing death and why she works to secure access to decent health care for all. The Anointing of the Sick will take place at the 11:30 mass next Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016 St. Mary s Baby Shower For: Mothers in need from Aid for Women Date: For the month of October (Respect Life Month) Time: After all Masses Place: Place your gift or donation in the box located in the narthex RSVP: For more information call Carol Walsh Suggested Baby items (New or gently used): formula, (iron-fortified) milk or soy based, disposal diapers sizes 4 and 5, small bottles of baby lotion, powder, baby shampoo, baby wipes, diaper rash ointment, bottles, baby books, sleepers (newborn or Large size 2), one-piece, all sizes, car seats, strollers, walkers, safety gates, swings, maternity clothes, nursing pads, postage stamps (for thank-you cards), and monetary donations (for prenatal vitamins and pregnancy tests. make checks payable to Aid for Women). 9 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer Today s passages from Kings and Luke feature people who were shunned because of disease and nationality. Now as then, there seems to be no limit to our construction of us vs. them barriers that inflict division and magnify suffering. The term leprosy as used in Scripture should not be narrowly understood as only referring to what we now call Hansen s disease. In biblical times, lepers included anyone with a visible sore or skin condition. The result was that all of these people ended up being feared, shunned, and excluded from the full life of the community. Perhaps we should look at our own community and identify who has been excluded and why and what we can do to bring them back in as Jesus did. These modern day lepers may be: senior citizens in nursing homes those with alcohol or drug addictions the unemployed and the homeless people whose marriage has failed veterans afflicted with PTSD those suffering from mental illness people who feel scorned by the Church and church-goers immigrants, Muslims, gays,... The list of people who are often shunned can go on and on. And sadly, we either help to isolate these folks or we have grown immune and accepting of the fact that they are on the outside looking in. Catholic author and scripture scholar Alice Camille writes: We d like to think we re more civilized now, that we don t insist that our modern lepers just cover themselves up and go away. Regretfully the homeless, the mentally ill, the undocumented and unemployed and desperate unseemly others that fall through the tears in our social fabric, are all still there tempting us to see them as unfit for our society and possibly for God s. We still mix sin and suffering together in our minds and presume [they have] somehow called down all this misery on [themselves]. Jesus never approached an outcast with any kind of moral assessment. He saw the mark of suffering, and he willed it not the person to disappear. In the New Testament, forgiveness gets a whole new spin. Today s Gospel reading tells us that, if you are the one feeling like an outcast, you need to know that Jesus reaches out with extraordinary love and compassion for those in crisis and pain. He seeks to heal you and bring you back to full communion. The path that leads out of whatever isolation you feel begins with placing your trust and love in the person of Jesus Christ, whose sacrifice took on sin and suffering and transformed them into life and joy. Like the lepers in the Gospel, we need to approach Jesus in faith and humility with the words Jesus, Master! Have pity on us. Our encounter with Christ begins with the celebration of the Eucharist. This Gospel also challenges you and me to let go of our excuses, boundaries, and criteria for judging the worthiness of others. How often do we, as individuals and as a society, find some rule or boundary (physical or psychological) to justify turning our backs on someone in need? Or worse, to justify causing them harm? Instead, Jesus commissions us to extend his healing through miracles of charity and mercy, of forgiveness and justice. We need to be the ones who build the bridges that span any and all divides that make people feel isolated and alone, whether in society or within our own families. We can do this by offering concrete assistance, a kind word, a listening ear. We, too, can cure lepers! If you wish to contact me, just leave a note in the parish office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com. Joy of Love Panel Discussion Tuesday, October 18, 2016, 7:00PM-9:00PM St. Joseph Catholic Church Koenig Center 121 East Maple Avenue, Libertyville Pope Francis Apostolic Exhortation, The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia), is the long awaited outcome of the Synods on the Family and affirms the diversity and realities of modern family life and provides insight on the vocation of marriage, raising children, sharing values with grandchildren, and the roles of family. What does it mean to use a well-formed conscience to guide discernment? How do we respond mercifully to our family members and friends faced with difficult situations? What insights does Pope Francis share on the ethical formation of children? Panelists will share their insights into the rich text and will answer these questions and your questions. While the text does not redefine doctrine, it does set a tone that the panelists will share as they respond to the situations you share and the questions you pose. Please register and submit your questions for the panelists at Reading the Joy of Love in advance of attending the program is recommended. Please contact Eileen Glynn-Tucker at eglynntucker@gmail.com or for additional information or to submit additional questions. Harvest Fest 16 Report We would like to thank once again the many volunteers who so generously gave of their time to plan and work this year s Harvest Fest. And we would also like to express our gratitude to the many people who participated in the raffle and came to enjoy great food, drink and fellowship! The near-final financial report for Harvest Fest 2016 is below. We ve included estimates for the three or four bills we have yet to receive. Gross Income: $31, Expenses: ($25,849.26) Net Profit: $ 5, Decreases in both attendance and raffle ticket sales reduced our net proceeds compared to prior years. Fundraising is not the only goal of Harvest Fest, of course. We are very glad indeed that hundreds of parishioners and friends of St. Mary had a wonderful time of food and fun. Thank you again to all who made Harvest Fest 2016 such a wonderful event! Carmel Catholic High School Open House Planned Carmel Catholic High School, a four-time Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, cordially invites you to its 2016 Open House on Sunday, November 6, 2016, from Noon to 3 P.M. This event will give prospective families the opportunity to tour the campus, meet faculty, staff, and current students, and learn more about the Carmel Catholic community. Guided tours begin at the Auditorium entrance throughout the event. For more information, please contact CCHS Director of Admissions, Mr. Brian Stith, at Pre-registration is available online at

10 Archbishop s Mass to Focus on Domestic Violence Archbishop Blasé J. Cupich will celebrate a Mass to End Domestic Violence on Saturday, October 29 at 5:15pm in Holy Name Cathedral. Everyone is invited. He will preach on our need to reach out to victims of domestic violence and their children and work to build healthy relationships in our families. A reception in the parish hall will follow after the Mass. Treasures from Our Tradition This month, parishes around the country will conduct the October count, a measure of attendance at Sunday Mass.
