1 AUGUST 16, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Living God s Word Lord Jesus, you call us to the banquet table to eat the food that will nourish us for eternal life, bringing us into communion with you, the Father, and the Holy Spirit. Give us an appetite for this food you so generously offer. May we not turn away from it for other food that neither nourishes nor satisfies. There was nothing like the variety of breads today, but whether it was white, rye, or Vienna, the smell of fresh-baked bread and especially the crunch of the crust stays with me more than sixty years later. Kauder s came to mind after reading today s Gospel. Biblical scholars point out that the crowds would have been appalled at Jesus words: Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you (John 6:53). The word used for eat is a very physical word, the equivalent of munching or chewing. To hear eat my flesh would have been repulsive. An invitation to cannibalism! The same with drink my blood. Jewish law was very clear that no blood should remain in any animal slaughtered for eating. Blood was the seat of life and life belonged only to God. But this is precisely the point. Behind this sign is God s wondrous life-giving plan: to bring us into intimate communion when we partake of the very life of the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ. We are not to get drunk on the wine of this world but on the divinized drink of everlasting life. Not mundane manna but the bread that mediates an encounter with the Lord of our salvation. This is truly Wisdom s house, where we eat both the bread of God s word and the bread that is the Lamb of God. James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Copyright 2014, World Library Publications. 3 from J acob s W ell Dear Parishioners, In today s Gospel reading Jesus teaches that he is the living bread come down from heaven. Not only did the Jewish people of Jesus time struggle with Jesus being living bread, I believe many of us do as well. This is neither an easy teaching nor is it something we come to believe all at once. At the heart of this teaching is who Jesus is for us and the many ways we encounter Him in our daily lives. Jesus desires to be at the center of our lives. One of the most basic needs we all have is to be fed. But as Jesus said, We do not live on bread alone. (Matthew 4:4) To have life and to have it to the full (John 10:10) requires that we attend to matters of our minds, bodies, and souls. As we approach the threshold of a new academic year, we take the time to prepare our children, providing what they need to be successful. Every year brings with it new unique opportunities as well as life experiences. I am grateful for the many dedicated parents of Saint Mary who are committed to providing the best education possible for their children. I am pleased to welcome Ms. Tammy Kleckner as the new principle of the Catholic Consortium of Lake County. Tammy brings a fresh new spirit and creativity to our unique model of Catholic Education. We pray for all of our new students, teachers and staff as a new school begins this coming Thursday, August 20 th. We pray for all students and teachers of every grade and school. May Jesus be at the center of all that we do that we might have life and have it abundantly.. Let us pray for one another, Fr Jerry F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer A Gallup poll a few years ago asked Americans who attend church services at least once a month to identify why they attend. The top answers were: For spiritual growth and guidance 23% Keeps me grounded/inspired 20% It s my faith 15% To worship God 15% The fellowship of other members/the community 13% Believe in God/believe in religion 12% Brought up that way/a family value/tradition 12% The percentages are rounded. They add up to more than 100% because those who answered the survey could select more than one response. I find it very interesting and more than a bit concerning that the top answers were more of the what do I get out of it variety. Worshipping God came in fourth! (For Catholics, it came in fifth, with brought up that way taking fourth!!) Apparently we have become so focused on ourselves that even our Sunday Mass attendance is more about us than it is about God. And if it s just about us, then we can erroneously justify dismissing the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays when we deem we don t need it. Obviously some further reflection on our part is needed. While we certainly should expect to be spiritually nourished through our participation in the liturgy of the Church, we need to recall the starting point: that we come first and foremost to worship in love and gratitude the God who has given us everything we have, starting with our very existence! Everything else flows from there. We get so caught up in debating liturgical styles and rubrics ( there s not enough silence, there s too much singing, the homily s too long, the new translation doesn t make sense, there s too much this and too little that ) that we think that our primary focus is on how to satisfy our personal wants instead of focusing on what we owe the Creator. We become selfcentered in the very act that is supposed to remind us that we are creatures who owe God an incalculable debt of gratitude and love. After all, the word eucharist is best translated as thanksgiving. A second element of the survey that caught my eye was that fellowship with the community came in last place for Catholics at only 3%!!! We have become individualists even in our worship! Yet, God doesn t just save us individually, he saves us as a people. He not only saves us from something (sin and death), but he also saves us for something (to build up His Kingdom by caring for all of our brothers and sisters). Perhaps those who don t attend church with any frequency or who have drifted away from faith entirely might be more inspired if we weren t so self-absorbed. The Eucharist is so central to living as disciples of Jesus that the Gospels are filled with stories that share the many facets of its meaning, from worship to nourishment to rendering service to one another. St. Paul s letters testify to how the Church from its very beginning was centered on the breaking of the bread. I m not sure how our parish family would stack up in this survey, but my hunch is that each of us is a bit more like these Gallup results than we should be. As we continue hearing from the Bread of Life Discourse in John s gospel I suggest that we reflect on the importance of the Eucharist in our lives and how we prioritize our time and activities. We must re-examine our hearts and attitudes so that we do a better job of putting things in proper order. If you would like to contact me, please leave a note in the parish office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com.

Children s Liturgy of the Word St. Mary offers Children s Liturgy of the Word at our 5:00pm Saturday and 9:30am Sunday masses. Children s Liturgy is open to all children ages 4 years to 5 th grade and there is no sign-up necessary. Children are dismissed from mass with their catechists to listen to the readings and discuss what they hear. Our team of catechists is there to share the Scripture readings and help the children better understand what they have heard. This is not a babysitting service and children are expected to behave as if they are in a religion session. We also have teen volunteers who help the leaders should a child need to use the bathroom or be returned to parents in church. Children should leave all toys, dolls, blankets, etc in church with mom and dad. If children misbehave, they could be returned to parents. Please help us make this a positive experience for everyone by talking with your children about proper behavior during Liturgy of the Word and by abiding to the guidelines set by the Liturgy of the Word team. Thank you for your support, The Liturgy of the Word Catechists REP NEWS! If you still need to register children for the fall sessions you may find registration forms on the parish web site or in the kiosk in the narthex. 5 Deacon Deliberations by Deacon Gary Kupsak Harvest Time Is Coming The other day after weeks and weeks of recuperating from some back surgery, my wife thought she felt strong enough and that it would be nice to take a ride and see if any outlying fruit and vegetable stands were open and were selling their farm grown produce. To be honest, I had no idea if it was the Time of the Year for any varieties of vegetables or fruits, possibly with the exception of apples that I had recently begun to see orchard advertisements in the newspaper. So off we went, headed towards Rockford, and lo and behold, there were several fruit and vegetable stands, and their shelves were full of apples, beans, bell peppers, carrots, cucumbers, onions, potatoes and tomatoes just to mention a few of the luscious looking items that were for sale. Behind the stand, workers were unloading crates of vegetables that would soon be for sale on the tables. It sure was pastoral. As my wife was picking through the tomatoes, and I was ambling around the potatoes and apple cider, Matthew 9:37-38 kept popping into my head, Then he said to his disciples. The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest Now I know that you know that Jesus was not talking about finding people to fill vegetable stands between Mundelein and Rockford, but the symbolism in Matthew s words was not lost there is Harvard, IL. In that passage from Matthew, Jesus gives us three ways to reach the lost who Jesus is always trying to harvest. By praying for a good harvest, for the gathering of lost or new souls, by sending or encouraging others to roll up their sleeves and participate in the harvest, and finally, of participating ourselves in the harvest. We can do this by: Praying The first step in reaching the lost is a joining of our pleading with the compassion of Christ. Are our hearts heavy for the lost? If not, we should pray even more that God would give us compassion and concern for those who are separated from the Good Shepherd. Sending Though we pray to the Lord to do the sending, we should allow ourselves to be used in the process, to be the vehicles through our words, our actions or our monetary contributions in getting people going, to participate in some parish mission effort, to assist in getting them harvesting. Participating To be the one who actually goes out into the fields and by the sweat of your brow works to harvest the lost. It can be at our Soup Kitchen, in one of the out of state or country mission opportunities, or yes even considering a religious life. Open to moving out of your comfort zone and going? Will you fervently pray for a bountiful harvest to take place? Today there are over seven billion people in the world. Only about one-third claim to be followers of Christ. The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. And by the way, there are some pretty sweet tasting bell peppers at a stand on Rt. 176 in Harvard. It s time for the harvest A Blessing for Students Returning to School Good and Gracious God, we ask you to send your blessing upon our students, that they may continue to grow in wisdom and strength. Give them healthy minds and bodies and keep them safe from all harm; may your Holy Spirit inspire in them a thirst for knowledge of themselves and of the world; and may their learning lead them to the source of all goodness and truth, which is you. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Feast Day of Mary - The Coronation Friday, August 21st, 2015 Please join us in the Eucharistic chapel after the 8:00 AM Mass for the recitation of the Rosary. All are welcome. Pray the Daily Rosary Please join other parishioners in the Eucharistic Chapel following the 8:00 AM Mass Monday through Thursday. Pray the Divine Mercy Novena & Chaplet The Divine Mercy Novena & Chaplet is prayed in the Eucharistic Chapel on Fridays immediately following the 8:00 AM Mass. The Family Rosary Join us for Family Rosary Saturday Devotion, requested by Our Lady of Fatima, every First Saturday of the month at 4:30 PM.

6 MAKING THE MOST OF THE OPPORTUNITY The Le er to the Ephesians speaks to us, urging wisdom in our discernment of how to live the Chris an life. We are to watch carefully... making the most of opportunity, and try to understand what is the will of the Lord (5:15). We are promised a generous outpouring of God s help in our a empts to live the gospel: the Eucharist. This is the living bread, the Body and Blood of the Lord. To those who can only think literally, this seems not only foolish, but repulsive as well. We need to have more wisdom, understanding, and faith to understand properly what we have been asked to believe. For our bread, which is food, and our wine, which is drink, to be transformed from things that give life to the body into Christ, who gives life to the soul, another great transforma on must take place. Not only are the physical elements transformed, we are transformed as well. If we become people of Wisdom, ea ng of this banquet, we become one with Christ, who is one with God. We become the Body of Christ, his living and real presence. FOR THE LIFE OF THE WORLD This wisdom for us is foolishness to the world. But there is a saying, The proof of the pudding is in the ea ng. When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we become what we eat; that is, we become one with the Lord and with each other. The proof of this is in our love. If we love God, if we love each other, and if we love others and serve them in charity, our love will be living proof of God s life and work in the world. We truly become the Body of Christ. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered by the parish priest upon request. We welcome new members who wish to worship with us and support the parish s work and mission. Please call the parish office to schedule a time to register. A complete listing of parish services and organizations is available at the parish office.
