1 JUNE 22, 2014 MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Reflecting on God s Word Since early this morning Dean has been working to prepare dinner for his wife Sheila s birthday. While the bread dough rose he bought fresh vegetables, cheese, and pasta. As the aroma of baking bread filled the house Carla helped her father cook his special sauce. Later there were vegetables to prepare, pie to bake, presents to wrap, and the table to set with little George s hand-painted placemats. At last Dean calls out Dinner s ready! The family gathers and the prayer begins: Bless us, O Lord and these thy gifts, which we are about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord. Amen. In shared meals the gift of food is made more nourishing by the gift of community. Today s Scripture invites us to unwrap some of the gifts that we bless and receive in our eucharistic meal. Christ shares the gift of himself in the word, the cup, and the loaf. Like Dean s family, we in the community also share the gift of ourselves with one another in our sharing of the Body and Blood of Christ. The living, breathing J. S. Paluch Co. 3 Commemorative Parish History Books The commemorative Sesquicentennial parish history is now available in the parish office during normal business hours. "Nothing is Impossible with God: the Story of St. Mary of the Annunciation, Fremont Center, Illinois" commemorates our rich history and spiritual heritage from the very beginning of the Catholic community in Fremont Center to the events of our Sesquicentennial year. The richly illustrated narrative honors the faithful witness of generations and the abundant blessings our parish has enjoyed over the past 150 years and should inspire us to make our own contribution to the proud history of our parish and be faithful stewards of the sacred inheritance we have received from our ancestors in Christ. Available at the parish office, $ For anyone interested in a more extensive chronology of key events in the history of the parish and Fremont Center with a particular focus on the German families who pioneered the parish, "The Chronicle of St. Mary of the Annunciation" is also available. This exhaustively-researched volume features never-before-seen excerpts from the correspondence of early parishioners, land maps, newspaper clippings, photos and more and is available on a print-on-demand basis at: Both of these attractive volumes are a great addition to any parishioner s library and also make great gifts! Both books are brought to you by the Sesquicentennial History Committee. Happy reading! Fr. Ron Lewinski Farewell Mass Sunday, June 29, 11:30 AM reception following Deacon Deliberation by Deacon Gary Kupsak Don t Ever Stop Saying I Love You June has historically been referred to as the month of love. In the United States there are more weddings, engagements, and formal exclamations of love that happen in June than in any other month of the year. I began to reflect on what it takes to be in love, to give your love to someone, and to unconditionally allow yourself to be shared with others, just like our loving Jesus did for our salvation. How many times have you said, I love you to someone this last week? How many times this last week did you show someone, without saying a word, that you loved them. How many times last week did someone say to you or show you that they loved you. I don t know about you, but I never get tired of hearing my wife, my children, my grandchildren and other members of my family say that they love. To my ears, words of love are the best words ever spoken. A grandmother and her youngest granddaughter, whose face was just covered with freckles spent a beautiful afternoon at the Brookfield Zoo. During break in wild animal watching the little girl was waiting in line to get her face painted by a local artist who was painting tiger paws on the kid s faces. You ve got too many freckles on you face, there s no room to paint! a mischievous little boy in line blurted out. Embarrassed, the little girl hung her head and began to cry. Her grandmother knelt beside her and said, I love your freckles. The little girl sniffled out, Not me! Grandma said, running her finger in a little circle on the granddaughter s cheek, When I was a little girl I always wanted freckles. Freckles are beautiful. The little girl looked up. Really? Of course said grandma. Why, you just name me one thing that s prettier than freckles? The little girl peered into the old woman s smiling face and said, Wrinkles! That my dear friends is love talk. One of the major duties as Christians is to Love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Part of our task is to show people in words and action that we love them. It does us and them absolutely no good if we love someone and keep that news to ourselves. Wouldn t it be a wonderful way to enjoy the people who inhabit our God given world around us by telling or showing them how much we are able to love? If we get comfortable with talking about love, the people who hear us, may become more comfortable about talking about love and they will influence others to talk about love and so on and so on and so on. Don t ever stop saying, I love you! To your God, to your wife or husband, your children, your parents, to as many people who will listen. They are the greatest words ever spoken, and when we say them, when we act with love, we take one more step on that journey to assist in the development of the Kingdom of God. This day, this week, this month and this year let s try to find a way to say I love you each and every day to those we love, to those we should love and even to those who may not love us. May you tell the world of the love of God, through the love you give to others?

4 Amen Take a look around the walls of your church. Even if it s only a year or two old, the word Amen has resounded off those walls countless times at the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer and as the faithful have come forward to receive the Body and Blood of Christ. Today s feast is about those Amens offered in faith, offered in times of trouble or doubt, spoken in joy, spoken mindlessly, but all given to God in a multitude of ways. It is our very lives that lie behind our Amens and are touched by the presence of Christ, the presence we celebrate today. More importantly, we celebrate the love of Christ for us shown in the sacrifice on Calvary and that he continues to give to us in every celebration of the Eucharist. What can we do but rejoice in that great love, and then go out into the world and live that love in sacrificing for others? Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. God brought forth water from stone for them to drink, and Moses doesn t want them to forget this, either. And Moses tells them twice that the food that God sent was a food that neither they nor their ancestors before them had ever experienced before. Jesus, too, speaks of food come down from heaven, food that the Jewish people had never experienced before. Recalling the manna in the desert, Jesus doesn t want them to forget it either, explaining that he is the food and drink of eternal life. And Paul reiterates to the Corinthians and to all of us that in the bread and in the cup, we share in the body and blood of Christ. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. Treasures from Our Tradition Ordinary Time beckons, and so on this Sunday we surrender the last glimmers of paschal joy as we celebrate the renewal of our life around the table of the Eucharist. This feast reminds us that the goal of the catechumen s journey through Lent is not the baptismal font at Easter, but rather the experience of Pentecost. It is all about life lived in the Spirit s embrace in relationship to the Body of Christ, which is found both on the table and at the table. The season of confirmation is also drawing to a close, and this feast serves as a reminder that this sacrament, a solemn sending from font to table, is keyed to renewed vigor. Confirmation has sometimes been sadly misunderstood as a kind of graduation from religious formation, but it is nothing of the sort. It is about being led by the Lord Jesus to the place where the Spirit flourishes, and where the gifts of the Spirit are most easily detectable. After next week we will resume our consideration of the sacrament of confirmation, its rich and somewhat tangled history, its challenging theology, and its changing celebration. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Parent Testimonial Four years ago my wife and I made the decision to send our daughter to the pre-k program at St. Mary. As active parishioners, we already knew about the Catholic values taught at the school. It is important to us that our kids go to Mass weekly, pray in their classrooms, and learn about God, as they put it. The youngest members of Team Zubert And even though we were confident that our kids would receive an outstanding education, we are overjoyed at the advanced levels our children are achieving. Our first-grade daughter is reading at fourth-grade level, and our pre-k son is starting to read and spell independently. The class sizes are smaller than at most local public schools, and the small-school atmosphere really shows when almost every kid, teacher, and parent in the school know each other. Yes, Catholic school tuition is a financial challenge for some people, but is there really any better investment than in your kids? Have you considered St. Mary of the Annunciation school? I d love to talk with you about it. Feel free to or call me at teamzubert@att.net or Dustin Zubert

5 During our Sesquicentennial year the History Committee presents weekly selections from the treasure chest of our precious past. When Fr. Laukemper left St. Mary he became pastor of St. Aloysius Parish in Chicago, where he became associated with a number of pioneers (including Msgr. Reynold Hillenbrand) in liturgical reform and helped organize the first Liturgical Conference held at Holy Name Cathedral in Fr. Laukemper remained at St. Aloysius until his death on March 9, Consortium Seeks Participants in Forming Board of Specified Jurisdiction The Catholic Consortium of Lake County (CCLC) comprises three schools and three parishes: the schools are Frassati Catholic Academy, St. Mary of the Annunciation, and Transfiguration; the parishes are Santa Maria del Popolo, St. Mary of the Annunciation, and Transfiguration. A Board of Specified Jurisdiction is being developed for the CCLC to help with governance, specifically in the areas of: FINANCE AND FACILITIES, MARKETING AND ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT, and ADVANCEMENT/FUNDRAISING. Participants are sought who bring experience in the above-listed areas. One need not be a school parent to participate on the board. Applications are available at the parish office. Eucharistic Adoration in the Jubilee Year For the Well-being and Mission of the Parish Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Friday, June 27, 2014 The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for adoration on Friday, June 27, 2014, after the 8:00am Mass continuing until 5:30 PM. Please note the benediction time. Adoration takes place in the Eucharistic Chapel. Stop at the books shelves by the West Chapel door and pick up meditations and spiritual books. All are welcome. The sign-up book is in the narthex. If you sign up and at the last minute cannot be there, please call the church office or Gretchen O Connor so we may reschedule and always have an adorer present during adoration. Even if you did not sign-up, stop and visit with our Lord. F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer Today we celebrate the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, often known by its traditional Latin name, Corpus Christi. The Eucharist is so central to living as disciples of Jesus that the Gospels are filled with stories that share the many facets of its meaning, such as the Washing of Feet (John 13:1-15), and the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35), to name just two. Indeed, the story of the Multiplication of the Loves and the Fish is told in all four Gospels! Like most of the Eucharist stories in the Gospels, the Multiplication of the Loaves and the Fish explains one of the deeper dimensions of the Eucharist namely, that to partake in the Eucharist is to accept a share of God s great bounty and a share in Christ s sacrifice for others. On this feast we need to renew our appreciation of the fact that Jesus is truly present in the consecrated bread and wine. The Eucharist is not merely a symbol of Jesus presence; it IS the bodily presence of Christ under the appearance of bread and wine! This Real Presence exists not simply in our minds but in reality because God makes it happen. It is this belief, maintained by Catholics and the Orthodox since the time of Apostles, which distinguishes our faith from those of other Christian denominations. It is a radical belief that defies human reason and has unfortunately caused many to move away from Christ and His Church. The Second Vatican Council taught that the celebration of the Liturgy is the source and summit of the Christian life. Communion is not intended to simply be a church moment. We are nourished by the Body and Blood of Christ in order to carry on the work of the Gospel in our daily lives. By sharing in the Eucharist we are also making a commitment to be the people of God. When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we agree to proclaim the death and Resurrection of the Lord by our words and deeds until He comes again. The commitment we make by receiving the Eucharist extends beyond the confines of our Sunday worship. In October of 1917, the Russian Revolution began and human history took on a new direction. The Russian Orthodox Church was assembled in a council that very month. They held a passionate debate about whether the color of vestments for a certain liturgical function should be white or purple. They chose to keep their focus inside the Church and did not get involved in the momentous issues of their society. My point isn t to criticize our fellow Christians, but rather to illustrate a failing we all seem to fall into. We, too, are often tempted to confine our celebration of the Eucharist within the four walls of our worship space because that is much easier than dealing with the messy world outside. We must become what we eat the presence of Christ in the world. Indeed, to the extent that we don t do out there what we profess to be about inside our worship space, we falsify, dishonor and diminish the Eucharist. It also wouldn t hurt if we evaluate today how well we are doing at showing respect for the Eucharist in the manner in which we receive Jesus Body and Blood and even in the way in which we dress to attend the Sunday banquet. We have Christ in our midst and should not treat this experience too casually! On this feast of Corpus Christi may we have a renewed sense of reverence, joy and gratitude for the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. May we also renew our commitment to be communion in the world and to be the catalysts that form community by sacrificially giving to others what they need from our time, our talents, and our resources. Like the loaves and the fish, God will multiply what we sacrifice for others. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the Parish Office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com.

6 Another Reason to Choose St. Mary School and Frassati Catholic Academy 100% 50% 0% 2013 Terra Nova: Archdiocese of Chicago Reading Language Math Science Social Studies National Average 3rd Grade 5th Grade 7th Grade All students in Archdiocese of Chicago Elementary Schools take Terra Nova Standardized Tests, developed by CTB/ McGraw Hill, in the spring of their 3rd, 5th, and 7th grade years. Millions of other students across the country take the same tests and, by comparing their scores, a national norm is established, which indicates the progress that students at different grade levels are making. This national norm is set at 50. Scores above 50 indicate that students are progressing more rapidly than the norm; scores below 50 indicate that they are progressing less rapidly. A score that is 7 or more points higher than the norm shows a significant difference in progress. As the graph above illustrates, students in Archdiocesan schools progressed at a significantly higher rate than the norm of all schools, and their scores generally continued to increase as they moved through the grades. Individual schools have their own scores and can share them with families who are interested. A Frequently Asked Question: Families often ask us why we don t use the same tests as the public schools in Illinois. They would like to be able to see test scores as an apples-to-apples comparison. We would like that as well and we have asked the Illinois State Board of Education to allow us to take the same tests they administer to public school students. So far, they have refused to let us do so. But we will continue to work toward that goal. St. Mary of the Annunciation Grief Support for Adults he program is open to adult men and women who have suffered the loss of a friend or relative through death. It will be run by archdiocesan trained facilitators who can help you in your own journey of life without your loved one. Please call to register or just come to see what this ministry offers. This will also be your chance to ask questions and get a registration form. If you are unable to attend, forms will also be in the office or you can fill one out at our first meeting. Our next grief support group will gather in the Hospitality Room on the following Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon: June 28th, July 12th, and July 19th. You may also contact Betty Steiner at or blsteiner6@aol.com. Featured CD for June Born Again? Faith Alone? by Stephen Ray In one of his most focused talks to date, Stephen Ray discusses salvation, the authentic biblical understanding of being "born again," and how we are saved by faith, but not "faith alone." With great humor and doctrinal depth, he goes all the way back to Abraham to show that we are saved by faith and obedience to all that Christ demands of us. Feature CDs can be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material. 7 Donors Needed! Help Hungry Children of Waukegan this Summer Seventy eight percent of children in Waukegan rely on free or reduced lunches throughout the school year. When summer comes, these children loose up to 10 meals per week. Help feed these hungry kids this summer by sponsoring a child at the BEA- CON PLACE LUNCH BUNCH AND BACKPACK PROGRAM! Each donation of $75 will sponsor one child for the 9 week lunch, day camp and backpack program. Children will enjoy a nutritious meal and stay for games, crafts, sports, water fun and more and every Thursday they will receive a backpack of food to take home for the weekend. Last year more than 450 different children attended these programs and were served nearly 3,000 lunches and left with backpacks filled with more than 12,000 meals. Many children in this community continue to go hungry and we expect the demand to be even higher in 2014 for these important programs. Please help us, feed hungry kids! If you are planning to be married at St. Mary of the Annunciation, the first thing to do is to secure the date and time of your wedding at the parish. This should be done before booking a place for your reception. To secure a date and time for the wedding liturgy the engaged couple needs to make an appointment with one of the parish priests or deacons at which time a date and time for the wedding will be confirmed. We cannot schedule a wedding over the phone. To assist engaged couples in preparing for their vocation as a married couple the Church requires a pastoral preparation that includes a Pre- Cana session and participation in FOCCUS, a marriage preparation instrument administered in the months prior to the wedding. St. Mary of the Annunciation also has a helpful planning packet for couples, which is available at the parish office.
