Fear has a way of imprisoning, away from the outer world, but also from our inner world, taking away our freedom to hope, imagine, and dream. We can become comfortable working in cramped spaces, isolated and unattached, removed from life and contact with others. But then along comes the risen Lord, arms outstretched, heart wide open, bearing gifts to transform our lives. The first gift of the risen Lord is peace (shalom), which translates as all good things, physically, mentally, and spiritually all that is needed to be alive inside. This peace is a gift that the world cannot give. The second gift is a mission: we are sent, as Jesus was sent, by the Father. Where? To the world. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world but in order that the world might be saved through him (John 3:16 17). Now the Son sends the disciples us! to bring life. The third gift is the Holy Spirit, given for the forgiveness of sins. The Holy Spirit is the gift of the Father and the Son, given to us at baptism, again at confirmation, and whose gifts are given to the church and its members for the good of all, within and outside the church. Primary among these gifts is the gift of forgiveness. James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Copyright 2013, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. 3 from J acob s W ell Dear Parishioners, On this Pentecost Sunday I have the privilege of conferring the Sacrament of Confirmation upon Diane Maier, Linda Kozlowski, Jason Smith, and Chuck Stoffel. They will also receive the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist. Through weekly worship, reflection on the sacred Scriptures and on the Church s teaching, and through prayer and acts of service these adults have been preparing to enter or complete their initiation into the Catholic Church. Let us now joyfully receive them as members of the Catholic Church. A word of thanks to their sponsors, family members, and the RCIA team under the coordination of Kathi Barrett, who have supported and encouraged them during their time of preparation. The coming of the Spirit should fill us with dreams and a vision of a better world. The Holy Spirit is always moving, always creating something new and bringing about healing and reconciliation. Imagine a world where all human life is respected and cared for, where hatred, terrorism, and violence are no more, where the hungry are fed and love and forgiveness. This and so much more is the hope and promise of Pentecost. "The People of God believes that it is led by the Spirit of the Lord, who fills the earth. Motivated by this faith, it labors to decipher authentic signs of God s presence and purpose in the happenings, needs, and desires in which this People has a part along with other men and women of our age. For faith throws a new light on everything, manifests God s design for man s total vocation, and thus directs the mind to solutions which are fully human." Vatican II, Constitution on the Church in the Modern World (1965) 11. I have a deep sense of gratitude to God for being able to celebrate both my 25 th Anniversary of Ordination and the Funeral Mass for my father last week. It still feels a little surreal, but I am very touched by the love and consoling spirit of so many. While there is a certain sadness in his death, I am filled with a deep sense of peace knowing that my dad is no longer suffering. It will take me some time to read and respond to the many cards and notes that I have received. Please know that I am grateful to you all. Congratulations to all our graduates and in a special way to those who graduated from Frassati Academy Friday night. Our Academy has embraced the unique legacy of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati whose love for Christ, the Eucharist, and his commitment to serve the poor inspires us to put our faith into action. Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry COME HOLY SPIRIT, Fill us with your love. Transform our hurts and brokenness into pathways of new possibilities. Inspire us to hear the music of your presence and the courage to sing new songs of praise. Remove all bitterness or resentment from our hearts. Touch our lips that our words may be respectful and true. Grant us clarity in time of confusion, wisdom in time of trouble, reverence in the midst of conflict, and patience with all that is still unfinished. Send your peace upon all who grieve and calm those who live in fear. Anoint us with holiness and joy and teach us how serve God in all things. AMEN.

5 Sponsored by the Vicariate I, Deanery DEF Ministry Commission Send Out Your Spirit Last week we heard that, following the Ascension, the disciples, Mary, and other followers of the Lord retreated to the upper room in prayer. This week we hear that, while praying in that room, the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Jesus post-resurrection promise, recounted in today s Gospel, is fulfilled: the power of the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus followers. Saint Paul tells us that all of us, in some way, are given gifts of the Holy Spirit, gifts that can be used to spread the Good News. Today is one of the Church s greatest festivals. Let us carry the refrain of the responsorial psalm with us throughout the coming week: Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth! (Psalm 104:30). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Pope Francis urges us to have a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversation which includes everyone, since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affect us all. Join us as we reflect on our Catholic faith, and how it calls on us to be in right relationship with God, with one another, and with the earth as we build a healthy planet for our children s future and for the wellbeing of all humanity. Fullness of Easter Easter reaches its fullness today, the 50th day, the Spirit s day, birthday of the church, great Pentecost! What began in cold ashes, what was washed with water and oiled with gladness and nourished with bread and wine now is filled with breath and stirred aflame. Breathe deeply today; let every breath be a prayer. Play the flute or the kazoo. Hang wind chimes to catch God s breath. Fly a kite. Be on fire today; live passionately. Read a love poem. Challenge someone to act on behalf of the common good. Take a stand against a grave injustice. Light seven candles on the dinner table. Wear red. Eat strawberries (if you re not allergic). Sing Come, Holy Ghost. (And if you don t know it, find someone to teach it to you.) Fifty days of Easter have been given for our delight and for our salvation. Rejoice and be glad! 7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer During my pilgrimage to the Holy Land a few years ago, I found myself standing in the Upper Room and reflecting on the significant events that took place there. Located only a stone s throw from Caiaphas house and prison, it was very easy to appreciate why the Apostles had locked themselves inside out of fear for their lives. Yet, it was from that room that the Church burst forth to spread the Good News of Salvation to the ends of the earth. As we celebrate Pentecost today, we can mistakenly look on this feast merely as a commemoration of a long-ago historical event. But in fact, Pentecost happens for you and me now, not just with the Apostles yesterday. We need to be personally aflame for Christ and his Church, not just wear red clothing. Pentecost is a good time to examine how well we are doing as individuals and as a community in fulfilling the mission to bring the Gospel to the whole world. Do we live a Pentecost faith? Or do we keep our faith locked up in some safe, comfortable upper room? Perhaps we ve allowed our practice of the faith to become focused primarily on Sunday Mass, rituals and devotions. But a Pentecost faith uses those things to fuel actions and a lifestyle based on Gospel values. A Pentecost faith looks first at our obligations to God and then fits our other responsibilities around Him, not vice-versa. A Pentecost faith is missionary and reaches out to others and seeks to concretely address their needs spiritual, emotional and physical. We are all painfully aware that active participation in the life of the Church has been eroding. Studies show that weekly mass attendance has been on a decline since the late 1950 s. Approximately one-third of U.S. Catholics are currently going to mass on Sundays, down from nearly three-quarters in the 50 s. If counted separately, fallen away Catholics would be the second largest denomination in the country. On average, slightly more than 6% of a parish s members provide 80% of the volunteer hours and 80% of the financial support. There are a gazillion statistics that could be quoted, but we all get the picture. Part of the problem which surveys reveal is that we Catholics, taken as a whole, don t look much different than anyone else. Our divorce rate, our lifestyles, our entertainment choices, our knowledge of the faith, etc., all mirror the prevailing superficial secular culture rather than bucking the trends. Yet, at its core, Christianity is radical and counter-cultural. So what are you and I doing for ourselves and our children that is truly counter-cultural? What acts of service and sacrifice do we perform on a routine basis? Do we talk to others about the importance of Christ in our lives? Or do we just hope that osmosis will do the trick while we remain silent? The picture is by no means all bleak and gloomy. Many among us live exemplary lives of love and service. Tremendous efforts are being done in our parish and throughout the Church to make the Gospel felt in the everyday lives of others. And most importantly, the Spirit is still moving and working among us as he did in the Upper Room on that first Pentecost. On this special feast you and I need to renew our openness to, and cooperation with, the Holy Spirit in order to spread the life of the Gospel in the world. Whatever you and I are doing presently, we need to kick it up a notch or two in order to further unleash the power of Christ s love and mercy in our own lives and in the world. Country Fest Raffle Needs Your Help! We are working on many new and improved features for Country Fest, which will held on Sunday, August 6 th. Among the improvements we have targeted is the addition of noncash prizes to our raffle. In particular, we would be grateful if anyone would be willing to donate pairs of tickets for one of our professional sports teams. If you wish to donate tickets for the Cubs, Sox, Hawks, Bears, Bulls or Wolves, please contact Howard Fischer in the Parish Office. Your generosity and assistance are greatly appreciated! The raffle generates considerable income for the parish and we think the addition of sporting event tickets will add to the excitement and sales. In addition to the raffle, the new Country Fest will include fun activities for the young and not-so-young. Plans are underway for bingo, a baggo tournament, and displays of a farm tractors and classic cars, among other features. We will have a new menu this year, featuring roasted pork, corn and cuisine from our Filipino community. A DJ will provide entertainment. We will have more details to share as plans are finalized in the next few weeks. In the meantime, please block Sunday, August 6 th on your calendar. We will begin Country Fest right after the 11:30 Mass. Please plan on joining your friends and fellow parishioners for an enjoyable afternoon of food, beverages and fun!! As with the Apostles, the Spirit enables us to break free from fear and the status quo to change the world. May our passion for Christ show forth in lives that mirror the Gospel and not the culture. Let us pray every day and be resolute in celebrating the Eucharist with our fellow disciples each week. May we support the mission of the Church with our time, talent and treasure so that faith is shared, lives are changed, and compassion concretely felt. Pentecost reminds us that we are each called to leave the comfort of our current routine (our personal version of the Upper Room) in order to do more for Jesus and the Gospel. Touched by the Holy Spirit, may our faith be enflamed and may we be stirred to greater action and commitment. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the Parish Office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com.

9 THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WISDOM Easter Symbol: Chrism UNDERSTANDING COUNSEL KNOWLEDGE FORTITUDE PIETY FEAR OF THE LORD Christening is a wonderful, old word for the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and eucharist. These are the three sacraments that initiate us into the church. To be christened is to be made a Christianos, a new Christ. When Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, God anointed him with the Holy Spirit. The word christ means anointed. The church anoints the baptized with chrism, which is oil mixed with perfume, as a sacramental sign of the outpouring of the Spirit. Saint Paul tells us that we are the aroma of Christ (2 Corinthians 2:15). It is no wonder then that the church uses the sense of smell in the worship of God. Fragrance can be invisible evidence. In spring we often are surrounded with christening aromas wafting through our windows, of sweet lilacs and crab apples, of iris and peonies, of all the grace-filled scents and sights of the awakening land. Perhaps each morning in the shower, with simple water and scented soap, you can renew your christening. In whatever you do, uncover evidence of Easter. Search for the signs of the Spirit, who has been sent to renew the face of the earth. Copyright 2001 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications, Chicago IL ; ; Text by Peter Mazar.
