1 JANUARY 15, ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Living God s Word When at Mass, we call on Jesus several times as the Lamb of God at the beginning in the Gloria and twice in preparation for Communion. Pray for our world this day to recognize Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Copyright 2013, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Reflecting on God s Word To be a disciple of Jesus Christ means to learn from him. He is the teacher, we the students; he is the master, we his servants. But what is it we are to learn? One important title for Jesus is the Lamb of God who has come to serve by taking away our sin. He serves by leading us to participate in the holiness of God. We are to do the same for others. Jesus came to understand his own calling by reading and praying the book of the prophet Isaiah, especially the four poems found there called the Servant Songs. Today we hear part of the second song in which the servant professes how he was formed as servant from the womb, not only to bring back Israel to God, but to be a light to the nations, so God s salvation may reach to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 49:6). Those who serve Jesus as disciples are to join in this work of bringing God s salvation to the world. Paul recognizes this in his greeting to the Corinthians, noting his call to be an apostle of Christ, one sent by God to the church at Corinth, which has been made holy in Christ and called to be holy. Paul is sent not only to them, but to all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 1:2). God s will is our holiness. By responding to the call to know Jesus as the Lamb of God, we accept the invitation to participate in this holiness and become the vehicle for inviting others to dwell there. James A. 3 from J acob s W ell Update Dear Parishioners, I begin 2017 with a sense of gratitude for the many blessings of this past year. I feel a sense of hope for our future as a result of our success with the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign, and I look forward to that day when the burden of our debt will be no more. Thank You to the nearly 500 families who supported this appeal. May you take pride in knowing the positive impact it will have for our parish. It is hard to believe that this was already my third Christmas as pastor of Saint Mary of the Annunciation. Where does the time go? I am truly touched by the outpouring of generosity and words encouragement. Fr. Matthew and I have enjoyed the many cards and gifts that were given to us to thank yous for our priestly ministry. We both appreciate your daily prayers and encouragement in our ministry. Let us all continue to encourage and pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. A word of thanks to all the liturgical ministers and volunteers who dedicated themselves to the serving the parish liturgies. I hope you experienced a wonderful sense of community and lively faith. It truly it is a blessing and privilege to serve the people of Saint Mary. This weekend the Gospel focuses on the beginning of the earthly ministry of Jesus, and we get a glimpse of the transition of John the Baptist who points the way to Jesus. I imagine that transition was not easy for John as he was totally devoted to his own ministry. What is important to notice is that John had the humility and wisdom to recognize Jesus and to let go of his own plans. As we begin a new year may each of us be attentive to the Lord s presence in our own lives and may we, too, have the humility and wisdom to follow where Jesus leads us. Let us pray for one another, Fr Jerry As of January 6 th, our pledge total for the To Teach Who Christ Is capital campaign is $2,554,882! So far, we have received pledge payments totaling $527,679. Campaign payments are split 60% to St. Mary and 40% to the Archdiocese up until the $642,000 Archdiocesan component is met; thereafter 100% goes to St. Mary. The St. Mary portion will first be directed towards retiring the construction debt from our new church. $1.2 million in St. Mary payments will be matched by the Archdiocese on an extraordinary 3-to-1 basis to eliminate our $4.8 million debt. Then once the debt has been retired, campaign proceeds will be used to repave our crumbling parking lots and renovate the basement of the little church for use by PADS and other parish functions. We are extremely grateful to all those who have been so generous. Your sacrifices will enable us to address our obligations from the past and move boldly into the future. We cannot say thank you enough. Pledge Payments All those who pledged will receive a confirmation letter from the Archdiocese of Chicago with details for making your payments. The Archdiocese has retained a company to process pledges and payments. Those who elected to pay by check will receive a reminder in the mail (along with an envelope) before each installment is due based on the frequency you selected. Credit card payments will occur automatically according to the schedule you chose. The third-party company is still in the process of setting up pledges for all of the parishes participating in this phase of the campaign, so it may be a few weeks yet before you receive a notice in the mail. Please wait until you have received a notice to begin making your payments, which will be processed by the campaign office at the Archdiocese and not by St. Mary. If you have questions regarding your pledge payments, please call the Archdiocesan campaign office at Contact Deacon Howard Fischer, our Director of Parish Operations, if you have other questions concerning the campaign. Still wish to pledge? If you have not yet made a pledge, we would certainly appreciate you doing so. There is no such thing as being too late to pledge! Every campaign gift is important since every donation received helps us to achieve the goals and implement the projects envisioned by the campaign. You may pick up a pledge card from the Parish Office or make a pledge online from the Stewardship page of our parish website. Thank you again to our donors and those supporting us in prayer for your generous response to the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign! We will update you again soon as the campaign progresses.

4 Three Missions Today we begin with one of the servant songs from the book of Isaiah, a song prophetic of Jesus ministry of service. Isaiah s mission is not only to bring back the children of Jacob to gather in Israel; it is also to be a light to the nations (Isaiah 49:6). Jesus Christ, as servant, will be the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy and the basis of the new. This Sunday we begin a series of readings from Paul s letter to the Corinthians. Here Paul is identified by his mission: he is an apostle of Jesus Christ. The church at Corinth to whom he addresses this letter is also identified: it is part of the universal church of God. The Corinthians are called to holiness, as are all Christians. Though the feast of the Baptism of the Lord was celebrated last Monday, today s Gospel also alludes to the importance of that event. The reading emphasizes that Jesus outranks John: his baptism in the Spirit will eradicate sin. Jesus accepts John s baptism, even though it is he himself who is the Lamb of God. Copyright J. S. St. Mary of the Annunciation Ministry of Care The community of St. Mary is blessed with many wonderful Ministers of Care (MOC). Some of them serve as MOC who visit parishioners who are in the hospital at Advocate Condell. We also have MOC who visit with parishioners who are homebound and cannot get to mass. If you or someone you know is a St. Mary parishioner and would like to have one of our MOC come and visit, pray, and bring communion while in the hospital or if homebound, please call the parish office or me at dmulroe@stmota.org ~Diane Mulroe An Update from the Director of Parish Operations In a few weeks we will share the mid-year report of parish finances. St. Mary s current situation is a combination of several pieces of great news and an element of some not-so-good news. The very generous response of our parishioners to the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign has been truly amazing and we are exceedingly grateful. We are also very thankful for the excellent results of the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal. St. Mary will receive a rebate of $121,080 for the amount of Appeal gifts received above our goal. This rebate is a great help in funding the ministries and programs of our parish. (Please note that the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal will take place in about four weeks, beginning February ) Our regular Sunday offertory collections, however, continue to lag behind last year (which in turn was below the year before that). Our recent Christmas collection was also less than last year. Since Sunday collections provide 85% of St. Mary s income, we are naturally a bit concerned. In light of this shortfall, we ask you to please prayerfully consider whether you can increase your Sunday offertory support for our parish family. We thank you for your continued generosity and sacrifices. 5 St. Mary of the Annunciation Bereavement Ministry 10 Week Grief Support Group: FINDING HOPE/HEALING HEARTS Here is what has been said about the experience of the Finding Hope/ Healing Hearts group: * [The group] normalized feelings and situations; felt comfort with new friends; hope was built * That I m not the only one going through this; that slowly it will get better; there will be ups and downs * Commonality and continuity; facilitators compassionate and real in their approach; each person has added to the group * Enjoyed sharing experiences with others in the group; realizing I m not crazy after all * At the first meeting...hesitant, feeling like I couldn't express my sadness or loss to these strangers. I couldn't even read aloud a sentence in support group guidelines... * Found that not only was this a room of warm comfort full of others who were hurting and trying to feel normal and that my bursts of sadness were part of walking this path and that these strangers were becoming to me not strangers anymore. It became very comforting to be at this FH/HH haven. * I have had things bottled up for so long after my husband passed away, keeping most everything to myself. This group has helped me to open up and let things out and it has helped me understand and cope much better. This weekly group will meet at St. Mary of the Annunciation for 10 consecutive Wednesdays January 18-March 22, 2017, 1:30-3:00pm There is a $40.00 registration fee which covers the cost of the two books. To register, contact Diane Mulroe in the St. Mary parish office. 7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer Every year The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is observed from January (The two dates mark the traditional feasts of St. Peter and St. Paul.) The struggle of Jesus disciples to remain united has been a difficult challenge from the beginning. There was in-fighting among the Apostles as they jockeyed for position. Paul often confronted conflict and division on his journeys and unity is a frequent topic in his epistles. Peter and Paul themselves nearly came to blows over whether Jesus followers needed to keep Law of Moses. Sin and human weakness have splintered the one flock of Christ. Yet in one of his last prayers, Jesus said to the Father: I pray that they may be one in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. (John 17:21) Instead, we are splintered into some 85 major denominations and tens of thousands of smaller ones. By Jesus own words, our divisions make him less believable to the world. Much progress has been made in recent decades, but unity is a long journey and many obstacles remain. A few years ago, Fr. Leo Walsh of the U.S. Bishops committee for ecumenical affairs offered the following 10 Things to Know about Working for Christian Unity : 1. The Commandment for Christian Unity Comes from Christ Himself. On the night before he died, Christ prayed for it. We have to pray and work for it too. 2. The Biggest Stumbling Block to the Credibility of the Gospel is a Divided Christianity. One of the chief arguments people use against Christians is that we simply don t have our act together. 3. Working for Christian Unity is Integral to the Life of the Church. The Apostle Paul constantly worked and prayed for unity in the Church. So too should today s Catholics. 4. Convergence not Compromise is the Key to Christian Unity. Working for Christian unity does not mean giving up what is essential to the Catholic faith simply to get along with other Christians. Ra- ther, it is searching for ways to express the truth of the gospel. For Christians the Truth is not a something, but a someone, and that is Jesus the Christ. 5. Ecumenism Happens on Many Levels. Ecumenism can happen in a marriage...or between a parish and a local Orthodox, Protestant or Evangelical congregation...or on the diocesan, national, or international level. 6. The First Work of Unity is Prayer. Christians can and should pray together for unity. When we join our prayers for unity to the prayer of Christ, then unity is possible. 7. The Second Work of Unity is Common Work and Witness. Working together in areas of common concern is a powerful step toward unity. What we can do together, we should do together, especially in acts of charity. 8. The Third Work of Unity is Dialogue. Once Christians have prayed and worked together, it makes sense to explore the beliefs, practices and doctrines we hold in common. 9. Apathy and Proselytism are Opposed to Unity. The animosities that brought about a divided Christianity are no longer present. Yet we cannot sit back and do nothing. Likewise sheep stealing is unacceptable. 10. Achieving Unity is Going to Take a Long, Long Time. We have lived in a divided Christianity for almost a thousand years. Christian unity is not going to be achieved overnight. Let us make Christian unity a priority in our prayer and in our living of the Gospel, not only this week but every week. It is surely the work that God wants us to do. May we be guided by the words of St. Augustine: In necessary things, unity; in doubtful things, liberty; in all things, charity. If you wish to contact me, just leave a note in the Parish Office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com. 10 Celebrate Affordable Housing in Mundelein and Make a Difference! Making a difference is often difficult. For 90 minutes on Sunday afternoon, January 15, it will be easy. All you have to do is show up. Lake County United is holding an assembly on this date to celebrate the opening of Fairhaven Crossing, 40 affordable housing units in downtown Mundelein, and to explain how more affordable housing is needed to reduce homelessness and improve living conditions for people in need. Elected officials need to see public support for such efforts throughout the county. Fairhaven Crossing as well as Mercy Lakefront in Grayslake were built thanks in large part to efforts by Lake County United, a community organizing group of 25 churches, synagogues, a mosque and social service agencies such as PADS dedicated to social justice issues in Lake County. St. Mary of the Annunciation supports PADS, the St. Vincent de Paul Society and many other efforts to serve people in need. Wouldn t it be wonderful if the need for these services weren t so great? The Assembly is at: Santa Maria del Popolo s Parish Center 151 N. The Church requires at least four months time before the marriage for adequate preparation. A parish wedding information packet is available at the parish office. Ministers of Care visit the homes of the sick, homebound, or hospitalized and bring Holy Communion to them. Call the parish office when a pastoral visit is desired. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered by the parish priest upon request. We welcome new members who wish to worship with us and support the parish s work and mission. Please call the parish office to schedule a time to register. A complete listing of parish services and organizations is available at the parish office.
