1 MAY 13, 2018 SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION A Blessing for Mothers We bless you and we praise you, God of our mothers! You are the God of Eve, mother of all the living. You are the God of Sarah, who laughed at childbearing in old age. You are the God of Rebekah who favored her second-born, Jacob. You are the God of Leah, mother of tribes, and of Rachel, who mourned and wrestled and won. You are the God of Hannah, who strongly sang your praise for Samson, and of Naomi who faithfully walked with Ruth. You are the God of Elizabeth, who bore the Baptist and of Ann, the grandmother of Jesus. You are the God of Mary, Spirit s spouse and mother of our Savior, given by Christ on the cross to be the mother of us all. We thank you, God, for the gift of our mothers, for grandmothers and godmothers and mothers-in-law, too. Send your Holy Spirit upon our mothers, at whose breasts we were fed, by whose hands we were cleaned and clothed, at times corrected, in whose laps we learned to sing and speak and play and pray, at whose side we hear your word and celebrate your mysteries. Heal their pains and disappointments. Forgive all that needs to be forgiven. Give to them the good that they have given others. Welcome to your bosom those who have died. Fill this world, O God, with a mother s love! We ask this through your Son Jesus Christ, who desires to gather us together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings. He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen. 3 from J acob s W ell Dear Parishioners, Each year the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women for Vicariate 1 honors a woman in every parish who has given vital service to her parish community. This year Jan Sinkovec was honored for her many years of generous service especially to the St. Vincent depaul ministry. I offer my congratulations to Jan and to women she has inspired and encouraged by her example. Kathleen De Caire-Aden describes so beautifully the impact Jan has had on our community and those we serve: Jan never tires to help the poor and suffering. For the past six years, maybe even longer, she is the one that takes every call to the SVdP intake line. Jan is the first voice of compassion a person hears at SVdP St. Mary parish. This is a responsibility with great commitment - there are no office hours, as the phone can ring anytime and there are no filters or departments, so she talks with everyone. She listens and consoles, then makes sure that the person in need gets placed with a home visit team. It's only through her diligence to handle each and every call that we can fulfill the mission to serve. Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter are busy times for Jan, not because of her own shopping and cooking, because she's thinking about our bigger family who cannot be ignored. The food collections take time to coordinate - organizing and sorting food, contacting families, recruiting volunteers, and making deliveries. Jan would be the first to say that she has lots of help - and that's true, but there is always a quarterback that pulls it all together and that's Jan. When families come for food or we see the shelves fill at the pantry, it is good. Jan is a light in the world. An inspiration for what it means to give of yourself. This day we honor the special women in our lives who have shown us a mothers love, we remember and ask for God s blessing: On this day we remember mothers who have sat up all night with sick infants saying: It s OK honey, Mommy s here. We remember mothers who gave birth to babies they may never see, and the mothers who took those babies ---forever to be their own children. We remember mothers who attended soccer games, band concerts and school plays, who said: I wouldn t have missed it for the world and meant it. We remember new mothers stumbling through diaper changes and sleep deprivation and mature mothers learning to let go. We remember working mothers and stay-at-home mothers, single mothers, married and divorced mothers and mothers who are plagued by addictions. We remember sons and daughters who have taken their parents for granted and pray for healing where there is estrangement. We remember all who grieve over the death of their mother and those mothers who are in poor health. We remember mothers whose children have gone astray, who haven t the words to reach them, yet who have never stopped loving them. We remember mothers whose children suffer from depression, addictions, and all types of illnesses, and we remember mothers who put pinwheels, teddy bears or flowers on their children s graves. We remember mothers who teach their sons to cook and clean and their daughters to speak up with pride. We remember mothers who love us unconditionally and those for whom we need to forgive. On this day, may we move beyond sentiment into actions which support mothers and mothering persons in all of their life-giving and life-nurturing roles. We remember and bless them and entrust them to God s loving care. AMEN

She s the only one who knows where the scotch tape is. 2. Mostly to clean the house. 3. To help us out of there when we were getting born. How did God make mothers? 1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us. 2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring. 3. God made my Mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts. What ingredients are mothers made of? 1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean. 2. They had to get their start from men s bones. Then they mostly use string, I think. Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom? 1. We re related. 2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people s moms like me. What kind of little girl was your mom? 1. My mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff. 2. I don t know because I wasn t there, but my guess would be pretty bossy. 3. My grandma says that mom didn t have her thinking cap on. Who s the boss at your house? 1. Mom doesn t want to be boss, but she has to because dad s such a goof ball. 2. Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed. 3. I guess mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than dad. Dedication of Memorial to Fr. Ron Lewinski Saturday, June 23rd After the 5:00 PM Mass We will dedicate a memorial to Fr. Ron Lewinski after Mass on June 23rd. The memorial is on the western edge of our parish cemetery; its retaining wall can be seen from the driveway. It was from this location that Fr. Ron would observe the progress of construction of our new church. A memorial plaque will be placed on the paved area. Also there will be a new bench as well as the cross that was carried for the blessing of the building site. A photograph of the procession with this cross may be seen on the wall of the meeting rooms hallway. College Connection Ministry Do you know... A young adult in college away or local? A young adult in a trade or trade school? If you answered YES, our parish college connection ministry is looking to send them a small simple care package next month. Any monetary donation to offset the cost of shipping would be gratefully accepted. Donations may be sent to the parish office MOTHER Mother is the name for God on the lips and in the hearts of little children. William Makepeace Thackeray What s the difference between moms & dads? 1. Moms work at work and work at home and dads just go to work at work. 2. 8 The Ascension of the Lord Great feast that Easter is, one day (not even three days!) is insufficient to celebrate the fullness of the mystery of the resurrection. So, as Christians, we keep a fifty-day-long festival, punctuated by the Solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord the fortieth day of Easter. The feast of the Ascension, like a prism, helps us focus the wondrous colors of the Easter spectrum. These images from the Ascension liturgy give us a sense of the hope and joy that color this feast: Christ s ascension is our glory and hope. The joy of the resurrection and the ascension renews the whole world. Where Christ has gone, we hope to follow. Christ has passed beyond our sight, not to abandon us, but to be our hope. Christ was taken up to heaven to claim for us a share in his divine life. If we have been united with Christ through baptism in his death and resurrection, we are surely united with him in the transformation and redemption of his humanity. What we celebrate, however, is not only a past or future event. We are given glimpses of our glorious destiny even now. So, feet firmly planted on earth, the community gathers to rejoice in the life we share with the risen Lord. Check us out at and on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter Mission Statement Today we celebrate Christ s ascension into heaven and his commissioning of the disciples to carry on his mission in the world. First we hear Luke s description of those events in the opening verses of the Acts of the Apostles. Next we hear words of encouragement and guidance from the Letter to the Ephesians. Finally we hear Mark s account of the Ascension, foretelling the mighty words and acts the Christian community would do in Jesus name. Together these scriptures give us a vision of the mission of the church of Jesus Christ a mission statement of sorts. Like mission statements in our parishes and corporations, this mission statement can help us set priorities and focus our activities. It can guide and support us as we strive to continue Christ s messianic mission on earth. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Ministers of Care visit the homes of the sick, homebound, or hospitalized and bring Holy Communion to them. Call the parish office when a pastoral visit is desired. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered by the parish priest upon request. We welcome new members who wish to worship with us and support the parish s work and mission. New Parishioner Welcome session is offered on the 2nd Sunday of the month. Time of registration is 10:45AM 11:25AM. If you are unable to make the Welcoming Session, please call the parish office to schedule time to register.
