This is an update for: Change of Name Change of Address Request for Envelopes Moving out of Parish Someone in Hospital Someone Homebound Dear Friends, In next Sunday s First Reading, from the Book of Kings, Solomon is encouraged to ask anything of the Lord. He is keenly aware of his duties and obligations as king. Although a mere youth, he understands, too, his shortcomings. He asks of the Lord, then, for an understanding heart and the ability to distinguish right from wrong. Solomon seeks not his own advantage but that which will serve the people. He wants to govern and judge wisely with God s counsel. Solomon can inspire us in our prayer before God. We, too, are encouraged to ask anything of the Lord. But what should we be asking for? What should we seek from our God? Solomon models an altruistic approach in petitioning God. It is an approach mirrored by saints through the ages. A favorite prayer of many through the years has been that of Saint Francis of Assisi. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. Our petitions to the Lord do not go unheard. Let us, then, ask rightly. May we approach the Lord, mindful of our shortcomings, and ask that we be given the gifts that will serve others and build up the Body of Christ. Joyful blessings, Fr. Did you know that two of the children who received the visions of Mary are some of the Church's newest saints? Pope Francis canonized the two Portuguese shepherd children on May 13, 2017, a century after the children and their cousin said they irst saw the Virgin Mary in Fatima in May of The children, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, along with an older cousin, Lu cia de Jesus dos Santos, told skeptical elders that they had witnessed six apparitions of the Virgin between May 13, 1917, and Oct. 13, 1917, when Jacinta was 7, Francisco was 9 and Lu cia was 10. These visions were later veri ied by the Church as "worthy of belief" leading to the veneration of Our Lady of Fatima. this summer at St. Julia Church! Gospel The one who knows of the kingdom of heaven brings new and old from the storeroom (Matthew 13:44-52 [44-46]). These readings are listed and brie ly described so that we might start to re lect on them before we gather for Sunday Mass each week. THE MERCY, POWER, AND LOVE OF GOD The irst reading today, from the book of Wisdom, makes its point over and over, at least ive times in ive verses! God is mighty, but lenient to all. God s power is shown in kindness and clemency, not in harshness and condemnation, and those who govern God s people must govern in the same way, with kindness. This loving kindness and gentleness is not contrary to God s might, but is a direct result of God s primacy over all. Who are we, then, to judge what is in the hearts of our fellow Christians and all people, when God commands justice with love and clemency? Likewise, the Holy Spirit makes up for our ignorance of what we need, speaking in a language we do not yet understand. But God knows our needs before we do, understands the intercessions of the Spirit, and helps us in our weakness. This is our hope: God s mercy, power, and love. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 5 FAITH FORMATION NEWS Grades 1-5 Sunday, July 16: The Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today s Gospel has Jesus talking about weeds growing among the good plants. He teaches us that when the weeds get pulled, sometimes it affects the growth of the good plants. Pulling the weeds may loosen the soil, and pull up the roots of the good plants. The good plants will not grow as well as they may do if left alone. So, don t take a chance on destroying the harvest! Again, Jesus is using a parable to teach us a lesson. A Christian who is living a Christ-centered life, basing every decision and every action they make and take on the teachings of Jesus, is the good plant. The weeds are those people who have chosen to not to do that. Needless to say, we have a lot of weeds in our society. I think we are all a weed at some point in our lives. A good gardener knows which weeds really need to be removed, because their presence will de initely destroy the good plants. But they also know which weeds can bear pretty lowers, or seeds for the birds. Some weeds can actually make a garden prettier. Some weeds can be productive in some way. (My grandfather used to make Dandelion Wine!) Leaving certain weeds in the garden can actually help some good plants grow stronger and reach higher. We all have people in our lives who we consider weeds. We wish they were not in our lives. But God gives them a chance to learn how to re lect the beauty of God by growing alongside us. And, God makes us stronger and reach higher by growing alongside them. The question for you is: Are you a good plant? Or are you a weed? How will you grow, with others around you?
