1 AUGUST 2, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Living God s Word The Eucharist has been called the bread of angels (Psalm 78:25). It is a free gift from God. It is offered to give us eternal life because through it we receive the life of Christ, the true bread from heaven (John 6:32). Jesus promised that those who believe and eat it will hunger and thirst for nothing throughout all eternity. Copyright 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.\ Reflecting on God s Word Unlike mortals, angels do not die. Nor do they need to eat or drink. Without corruptible bodies, they live eternally with God. But the psalm for today describes the manna that the Israelites ate in the desert as the bread of angels (78:25). As the first reading tells us, it seemed to them that it came down from heaven every night. Through the manna, God gave them life when death seemed imminent. Through the manna, their faith in God s eternal care for them was revived. In the case of the Israelites, they received life by eating the bread from heaven. And the life they were given allowed them to believe. In the case of the disciples of Jesus it s the other way around. We must believe in Jesus as the true bread from heaven (John 6:32) in order to receive the eternal life that he provides. Virginia Stillwell Copyright 2014, World Library Publications. 3 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time WHAT CAN YOU DO? The crowd wanted to know, What can we do to accomplish the works of God? (John 6:28). They were looking for a way to do miracles, signs, wonders, and they expected Jesus to prove himself by doing this for them, too. They had just witnessed the multiplication of the loaves, yet it seemed not to impress them! They were asking for yet another sign. Jesus directed their attention to the meaning of the miracles: God s loving faithfulness to them in their need. Manna in the desert and loaves in the wilderness were the signs of Jesus gift of himself to us in love. What Jesus was looking for in these people was an attentive heart. He wanted them to see that God was providing for their needs with love and faithfulness, and had always done so. But the people didn t get it. They had just witnessed a miracle, and yet they still were asking for a sign. What counts as a sign? Do we need to be hit over the head? Every day we witness miracles, and yet we don t really see them, or believe that they really come from God. Every day we are bread for each other, or someone is bread for us, and yet we do not make the connection! No doubt the people in the desert failed to connect the quail and the manna with their crying out to God for food. God answers our prayers and knows our needs, and sends people to us and us to others, and yet we look for other explanations of these miracles in our lives. BELIEVE! God s faithful love is shown all around us, every day. We cry out to God, and yet we often explain away God s answers to our prayers, looking for something more spectacular than merely what we need or even what we have asked for. We have what we need: the Bread of Life. Today s Readings: Exodus 16:2 4, 12 15; Psalm 78:3 4, 23 25, 54; Ephesians 4:17, 20 24; John 6:24 35 Copyright 2005, World Library Publications. From the Mission Appeal Dear St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish Family, It is with deepest gratitude that we thank you for your kindness towards Maryknoll Lay Missioners and our family on the weekend of July It was such a blessing to be able to return to the U.S. and have the opportunity to speak with you! We greatly appreciate the warm welcome and hospitality you shared with us. We deeply experienced what a wonderful parish community you have at St. Mary. Thank you so much for your prayers and your generous donations in support of Maryknoll Lay Missioners. Your donations directly sustain our missioners serving the marginalized peoples of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Thank you again for your kindness and generosity. Yours in Christ, Greg & Kim Fischer Featured CD for August Is God on Your ipod? By Matt Smith Is mainstream music bad for you? Can hit songs remind you of the things of God? Matt Smith discusses how we as Christians can judge all different types of music to determine whether or not it is going to lead us closer to The Good The True, and The Beautiful... which is ultimately closer towards God. Feature CDs can be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material. Save the Date!!!! St. Mary of the Annunciation Women's Advent Retreat with Sr. Gael Gensler OSF December 5th & 6th, 2015 at Siena Center in Racine, WI Children s Liturgy of the Word St. Mary offers Children s Liturgy of the Word at our 5:00pm Saturday and 9:30am Sunday masses. Children s Liturgy is open to all children ages 4 years to 5 th grade and there is no sign-up necessary. Children are dismissed from mass with their catechists to listen to the readings and discuss what they hear. Our team of catechists is there to share the Scripture readings and help the children better understand what they have heard. This is not a babysitting service and children are expected to behave as if they are in a religion session. We also have teen volunteers who help the leaders should a child need to use the bathroom or be returned to parents in church. Children should leave all toys, dolls, blankets, etc in church with mom and dad. If children misbehave, they could be returned to parents. Please help us make this a positive experience for everyone by talking with your children about proper behavior during Liturgy of the Word and by abiding to the guidelines set by the Liturgy of the Word team. Thank you for your support, The Liturgy of the Word Catechists REP NEWS! 5 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer The past few weeks have been very special for Maryann and me. As you may know, our son and daughter-in-law, along with their two children, have been visiting from Brazil where they serve as Maryknoll Lay Missioners in São Paulo, Brazil. And then they surprised us with the news that grandchild #3 is on the way around Christmastime! (Please know that Greg and Kim greatly enjoyed meeting the parishioners of St. Mary two weeks ago and they are very appreciative of your warm welcome and support as they spoke on behalf of the annual Mission Appeal.) As you can well imagine, it has been great having them and our grandkids around the house again! We are trying to make the most of our time together as they will be returning to São Paulo to continue their service in another week. Two weekends ago, we had the rare but always special occurrence of all three of our children and their spouses living under our roof for a few days. It was glorious chaos. Despite all the comings and goings, we had one dinner where we were all gathered around one table sharing a meal with stories, love and laughter. And I am certain that the Lord was present in the midst of it all. It was an experience very much like the weekly Eucharist (although there was no singing at our meal which is a good thing since the Fischers have trouble carrying a tune in a bucket). We were gathered with the Lord in our midst to share and renew our bonds as family. And to then go forth to serve the Lord and others in our own unique callings. We should find these very same elements in our celebration of the mass, while at the same time recognizing that our first obligation is to give thanks and praise to God for all he has done for us. We also come to be nourished in order to live as disciples of the Lord. The Second Vatican Council taught that the celebration of the Liturgy is the source and summit of the Christian life. Communion is not intended just as a church moment. We are nourished by the Body and Blood of Christ in order to carry on the work of the Gospel in our daily lives. By sharing in the Eucharist we renew our bonds as the Lord s family. We are also making a commitment to be the people of God. When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we agree to proclaim the death and Resurrection of the Lord by our words and deeds until He comes again. The commitment we make by receiving the Eucharist extends beyond the confines of our Sunday worship. We must become what we eat the presence of Christ in the world. Indeed, to the extent that we don t do out there what we profess to be about inside our worship space, we falsify, dishonor and diminish the Eucharist and our Christian faith. As we continue to proceed through the Bread of Life Discourse from John s Gospel for the next few Sundays, may you and I cultivate a renewed sense of reverence, joy and gratitude for the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, along with his presence in the proclaimed Scriptures and in the gathered community of disciples. May we also renew and strengthen our commitment to be communion in the world. Let us grow the Kingdom of God by sacrificially giving to others what they need from our time, our talents, and our resources. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the Parish Office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com. New Registrations Accepted for Fall 2015! 7 New Hymnal On Its Way Gather 3rd Edition Arrives September The RitualSong hymnal has been a presence in our pews since 1996, the year it was first published. In the ensuing years we experienced tremendous growth and began celebrating Mass both in the little church and in Diantha Hall, our gymnasium. Within six years we built and dedicated a new church to the greater glory of God. And for all of those years RitualSong has been in our hands as we sang God s praises. What a symbol of longevity and stewardship! For 19 years this book has served our singing assembly at every weekend Mass, at funerals, weddings, sacramental celebrations, prayer services. Toddlers riffle through its pages, the elderly have used it as an aid to stand, it has even been used as a door stop. From its pages our parish has established a repertoire of song that crosses generations. Concurrent with our evolution in Fremont Center, Mother Church was paying closer attention to the words she used. Pope John Paul II ordered a revision of the Roman Missal. The Lectionary (the readings we hear at Mass) was revised. New saints were added to the calendar. By December 2010 these many revisions were to be made normative. Suddenly our hymnal was out of date. Rather than rush into the purchase of a new hymnal, we chose to wait until the right hymnal could be found. Composers needed time to become comfortable with new and revised texts before they could put those words to music, and publishers needed time to assemble hymnals that would reflect the needs of today s parishes. What we needed at St. Mary was a resource that could encompass our core repertory of psalms and hymns, that would contain treasures we could add to our repertory, and that would also contain new and contemporary music. As the pastoral staff, the liturgy team and the hymnal review committee soon realized, there is no one-size fit for St. Mary Parish. No hymnal met all of our criteria. And even if one were available, its size would be too heavy to hold and too thick to fit our pew racks. The best decision was a three-book resource: a hardbound hymnal for traditional psalms and hymns, a contemporary songbook, and the Seasonal Missalette for Sunday and weekday readings. The hymnal that best meets our criteria is Gather 3rd edition, from G.I.A. Publications. It is the successor to RitualSong, which will no longer be printed. In it one will find almost all of the palms and hymns we regularly sing (for our purposes the word hymn refers to all strophic songs, both old and new). A wealth of fine pieces has been written since 1996, and the finest of these are included in this hymnal. There is also an unprecedented collaboration between Roman Catholic music publishers, and our parish will benefit from that cooperation with access to familiar Catholic titles heretofore unavailable to us. Although the traditional hymnal has been chosen, the choice of a contemporary songbook is ongoing. The hymnal review committee will spend time over the next weeks to review the resources available. Once the right choice is made, this book will be added to our pew racks. It is amazing to see the Holy Spirit at work. Bringing this hymnal to St. Mary Parish is a case in point. We could have purchased a new hymnal when the revisions were made in our liturgy. But the economic downturn of 2008 plus the development of the Catholic Consortium of Lake County required us to use our resources in other areas. This new hymnal was not printed until 2011; it was wise to wait. Purchasing a new hymnal was also one of the goals of our sesquicentennial year, but even then other factors, including the transition of pastors, kept us from putting the hymnal in the pews. It was not until the end of 2014 when a parishioner, recognizing the need, stepped forward with a generous donation toward a hymnal s purchase, that this project could come to fruition. This benefactor continues the long tradition of support that has sustained St. Mary Parish for generations. Everyone can support our hymnal project through the donation of book plates. These labels are affixed to the inside front cover of a hymnal and may be given in memory of persons or family events. More details about our new hymnal and the book plate program are forthcoming. Parents are required to participate in a Baptismal Preparation class before scheduling a Baptism. Adults who wish to become Roman Catholics are enrolled in a formation process that includes prayer, dialogue, instruction, and introduction to the Church s life and values, rituals and tradition. Call the parish office for more information. St. Mary Parish rejoices with parishioners who are preparing for the Sacrament of Matrimony. The Church requires at least four months time before the marriage for adequate preparation. A parish wedding information packet is available at the parish office. Ministers of Care visit the homes of the sick, homebound, or hospitalized and bring Holy Communion to them. Call the parish office when a pastoral visit is desired. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered by the parish priest upon request. We welcome new members who wish to worship with us and support the parish s work and mission. Please call the parish office to schedule a time to register. A complete listing of parish services and organizations is available at the parish office.
