1 DECEMBER 25, 2016 THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD Welcome God s Love into the World God the Father, Creator of all that lives and loves, this day you give of yourself. Your Son, the Word made flesh, has come into the world; this day your Son is welcomed with great joy. May we who have awaited his coming, who have prepared our hearts with anticipation, grow in love and service, as we share that joy, that welcome, and that presence with our families, our communities, and the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Incarnate Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen Liturgy Training Publications Written by Anne C. McGuire. Permission to publish granted by the Archdiocese of Chicago on March 1, Boundless Joy The news of our Savior s birth cannot be contained. Every reading is bursting with joy at this ultimate Good News: Rejoice! Exult! Make merry! Announce to the world and proclaim to all people! We have been preparing for this day. Even as we prepared in joy, there was something holding us back, but no longer. The darkness no longer appears dark, for the light has come, and it is a light brighter than any other. The readings for today tell us that there was no room in the inn, but the news of a wondrous birth is spread by angels and shepherds. The Savior has come into the world, heaven and earth rejoice. It is as if the entire world lets loose unbounded joy. How can we both celebrate and spread this joy today? The shepherds did not just hear the announcement of the angels, they gathered their flocks and traipsed together to find this simple new family and welcome the infant, with both silent awe and joyful sharing of the news. May this Christmas find us eager to celebrate and spread the news with exaltation, silent awe, sharing good news and kindness, and looking for Christ in all families and situations of the day. Our abundant joy cannot be contained Liturgy Training Publications Written by Anne C. McGuire. 3 from J W ell acob s Dear Parishioners, I wish to extend a warm welcome to all who have come to Saint Mary of the Annunciation to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior. I pray that your families and friends may experience the peace and joy that God offers us through his beloved Son. Saint Augustine once said, The birth of a child is a sign from God that the world is to go on. The blessing of a newborn child brings a special joy and sense of awe for the gift of new life. As we celebrate the birth of Christ, may we experience that same type of joy and awe. May our faith be strengthened to live with a profound sense of gratitude for the hope He brings. I enjoy many of the traditions that are unique to this time of year. The decorations, lights and ornaments brighten our homes during these cold and dark winter days. I especially enjoy the Christmas tree with the many ornaments and lights. The Christmas tree is an invitation to receive in one s heart the gift of the joy, peace and love of Jesus. To believe in Christ means to let your self be encompassed by the light of his truth that gives full meaning, value and sense to our existence, given that precisely to reveal to us the mystery of his Father and of his love, he also reveals man fully to himself and shows to him his lofty vocation. His Holiness Benedict XVI, Pope-Emeritus I believe that God delights in the beauty and creative Spirit that each of us possesses. Each of us has a unique calling and mission to fulfill in this life. We are happiest when we live with an awareness of the greater calling we have received. Sometimes that calling involves entering into another s suffering even as we ourselves experience pain and grief. None of us can do all things and perhaps that is also part of the God s plan. There is a joy that we experience deep in our hearts when we are able to help another or further a cause in which we believe It is not how much we give but how much love we put into giving. Small acts, when multiplied (by millions of people), can change the world. Howard Zinn I am grateful to the 408 households who have participated in the To Teach Who Christ is Campaign. We have received more than $2,431,215 in pledges which will enable us to eliminate our parish debt. It gives me great joy to be able to serve as a priest and pastor of Saint Mary and to witness the generosity of so many in this community. I am also grateful for the assistance of Fr. Matthew Alexander and for his youthful passion for Christ and the joy he brings to the rectory and the parish. On behalf of the pastoral staff and leadership of Saint Mary, may you have a blessed and joy filled Christmas Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry

While many worthwhile causes are appealing for your support, we ask that you consider St. Mary of the Annunciation in your year-end financial planning as well. In addition to placing an envelope in the collection basket or mailing a gift to the Parish Office, our online giving page (accessed from the Stewardship tab of our parish web site, also has an option for year-end gifts. In order to reap the potential tax benefits for the current year, now is the best time to follow through with important contributions you have been considering as gifts must be made before the end of the year if they are to be eligible for 2016 tax deductions. Thank you again for your thoughtfulness and generosity to St. Mary of the Annunciation! Your support enables us to build the Kingdom of God and manifest the Good News of Jesus Christ to so many and in so many ways!!

What are we to do in this between-time? How can we embrace the past, present, and future of God s passionate love for us? How can we both sing and bring joy to the world? Reflecting on God s Word Margaret left the massage therapist feeling released from the stress of the last few months, renewed and energized. It was as though the memory in her muscles was erased and their power was unleashed by the therapist s healing touch and aromatic oils. The Rite of Baptism includes a kind of symbolic massage that has a similar purpose. The newly baptized are anointed with fragrant chrism and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live as members of Christ, who was anointed priest, prophet, and king. This connects Christians, the new Israel, to ancient Israel, in which priests, prophets, and kings were anointed to show that the Spirit of God was with them. It also connects us to Jesus, as today s scriptures show. In the second reading we hear that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, after which he went about doing good, for God was with him (Acts 10:38). Matthew shows Jesus being symbolically anointed with the Holy Spirit as God s chosen Son, and the first reading describes what Jesus was chosen to do: establish justice on the earth... open the eyes of the blind... bring out... those who live in darkness (Isaiah 42:1, 7). In short, Jesus was chosen as the Messiah, or Anointed One, of God who would inaugurate the messianic era. The baptized are chosen and anointed as well, to continue Christ s messianic mission in the church. Virginia Stillwell Copyright 2013, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Pray for all who suffer illness, pain and grief: and for the repose of all who have recently died. John Robert McCormick Prayer for Vocations God of Love, You call us to live in your love through the grace of our baptism. Bless us with the courage to carry out the msision of Jesus. Grant us open and generous hearts to see the needs of others and to respond with compassion. May the Church be blest with women and men who are dedicated to you through marriage, the single life, the diaconate, priesthood, and the consecrated life. It is in Christ and through Christ that we offer ourselves to you now and forever. Amen. 2007NCCV

6 Our Winter Passover The heart of our faith is the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus, and the fact that what happened to Jesus is our destiny, too. We, too, in various ways and over time, will suffer, die and be raised up all in the arms of a God who loves us. This is what we call the paschal mystery. We celebrate the paschal mystery every Sunday, and in a most important way once a year, in spring around the time of the Jewish Passover, when we baptize, confirm and welcome to the eucharist new believers at Easter. But did you know that even as we celebrate Jesus birth in the flesh, we are in fact celebrating the paschal mystery? Have you ever noticed how Christmas is actually a second Easter, our winter Passover? There are hints all over the gospel accounts of Jesus birth. When the baby is born, he is wrapped in swaddling clothes; when the man dies, he is wrapped in a shroud. The newborn is laid in the manger, the feeding trough of animals. The man grows up to teach us, I am the bread of life. If you eat of my flesh and drink of my blood, you will live forever. Angels herald his birth, and angels announce his resurrection to the three women. A star shines over the baby in the manger; the sun hides its face as the man hangs on the cross. And perhaps most ominously of all, the magi those mysterious strangers bring gifts that seem sentimental and sweet to us today: gold, frankincense and myrrh. But when this story would have first been told, the original hearers might have been puzzled or even horrified, for these were things people brought to a deathbed: gold coins to put in the mouth (as a sign of paying for the soul to take the ferry across the river of death), frankincense to burn (to cover the odors, and as a sign of the soul ascending), and myrrh to embalm. (Recall that the three women come to the tomb on Easter morning with a mixture of myrrh and aloes.) And if there wasn t enough blood in the childbirth, recall that after Jesus is born, the Holy Family must flee into exile in Egypt to escape Herod, who slaughters in cold blood all the innocent baby boys of Bethlehem. As an adult, Jesus will right this wrong by shedding his blood on the cross for us all. But note that to protect Jesus, Mary and Joseph take him into Egypt, just as their ancestors had fled there centuries before to escape starvation and find the other Joseph, the son of Jacob. So Jesus ends up living as a refugee and an exile, just as his people had done. And just as they had crossed the River Jordan to enter the promised land after the first Passover, the adult Jesus is baptized in that same river as he begins his ministry that reaches its high point at Passover. So Merry Christmas and Happy Easter, too. Glory in heaven and peace on earth, now and forever! 7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer Merry and Blessed Christmas to you and yours! Christmas celebrates a truth that is downright scandalous to many: Our humanity is wonderful enough that God chose to share it. It is also wonderful because God chose to share it! Author Alice Camille writes that Christmas is scandalous because God does what none of us hope to do: plunges from omnipotence to powerlessness, from eternity to limitation, from omnipresence to crushing specificity. From celestial majesty to prickly manger straw? That s a big comedown. There are cosmic consequences to this divine choice. The same God who created the universe with its billions of galaxies and trillions of stars wraps divine love in swaddling clothes and a baby s hungry cry. God serves up love to be eaten and drunk at tables the world over. God decrees that divine love can be discovered in coming together with people we love and also with people we don t love or even know. God is in the word, in the conversation, in the heart of the world and the heart of each one of us. So Merry Christmas indeed! God is in the world, in the flesh. God wants to be known as Emmanuel, God-with-us. Not some God-outthere, but God-right-here. Not a God who receives our prayers from faraway and may or may not reply but a God who experiences our loneliness, sweats our fear, hopes for what we hope for, and works through us and with us to bring the future into being. Since God desires to work with us and through us, an essential dimension of the meaning of Christmas is that we must open our hearts and lives for Jesus indwelling with us to have its full force. Consider the following story: Once upon a time, a parish prepared for its annual Christmas pageant. Wally was given the role of the innkeeper. He was delighted. He had difficulty memorizing things and for this role he only had to learn one line: There is no room in the inn. He had that down in no time! Then came the night for the pageant. The parents took their places. Every seat was filled. The curtain opened on Scene One. Mary and Joseph entered the stage and walked up to the inn. Please sir! My wife is not well. Could we have a room for the night? Wally was ready for his line. He had rehearsed it all night. He began, There is and he hesitated. He started over again. There is and again his mind went completely blank. Poor Wally didn t know what to do! Joseph thought he would improvise and started walking away toward the stable on stage left. Seeing him walking away, Wally in desperation called out, Look, there s plenty of room at my house! Just come on home with me! When Jesus came 2000 years ago, there was no room for him in the inn. There was no room for him in the economic world. There was no room for Jesus in the legal realm, nor was there room in the religious order. As He comes again to us this Christmas, let us take a cue from Wally: May we make room for the Christ and invite him to come and stay in our homes and in our lives. May your Christmas season be filled with joy and peace! If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the parish office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com. Christmas A Sense of the Season You probably know the song The Twelve Days of Christmas. Even though a radio station once proclaimed the twelve days of Christmas as those before December 25, Christians have always kept Christmas as a season from December 25 until January 6 (the traditional Epiphany). The church calendar today even extends the celebration until the feast of the Baptism of the Lord the Sunday after Epiphany. Here is what the church says about the season of Christmas: Next to the yearly celebration of the paschal mystery [meaning the Triduum and Easter season], the church holds most sacred the memorial of Christ s birth and early manifestations. This is the purpose of the Christmas season. (General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, #32) More than just Jesus birthday, the Christmas season is a time for remembering and reveling in the nativity of Christ, the revelation of Christ to the Jewish shepherds, the revelation of Christ to the Gentile magi (that s us!), Christ s baptism by John in the Jordan, and Christ changing water into wine at the wedding on the third day (John 2:1) in Cana of Galilee. In all these saving events, we know that the Word is made flesh and dwells among us. How can we keep Christmas not just as a day, but as a season? Keep the tree up (and watered!) and shining bright until the Baptism of the Lord. Sing carols and read the scriptures every day. Safely put candles around your creche: Use small glass votive candle holders, and place them away from the straw. You might also want to add a little water to the bottom of the glass before putting the candle in an added precaution that will also help you clean the glass more easily. When you light the candles, sing or say the prayer of the angels: Glory in heaven and peace on earth, now and forever. Amen! 8 Domestic Violence Awareness Committee Does our faith community care enough? Do we have the will to change the statistics? 54 Million Americans report they have been a VICTIM of Domestic Violence. (Number represents % of U.S. population ages 15+) 60% of Americans know a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault. 73% of parents with children under the age of 18 said they have not talked with them about domestic violence or sexual assault. Even though 75% of Americans say they would act help a stranger being abused, the reality is most people do not help. But 64% of Americans say if we talk more about domestic violence and sexual assault, it would make it easier to help someone. "NO MORE Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Survey of Attitudes and Experiences of Teens and Adults," Commissioned by the AVON Foundation for Women 2013 To learn more, join us to discern the formation of a parish-based domestic violence outreach ministry at St. Mary of the Annunciation parish. DATE: Monday, January 9, 2017 TIME: 7:00 8:30 pm LOCATION: Meeting Room 1 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE How can St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish support domestic violence victims and educate our community to prevent domestic violence? The faith community at St. Mary of the Annunciation is beginning an important discussion to raise awareness about Domestic Violence issues, and its prevalence in families throughout our society. St. Mary of the Annunciation wants to reach out to provide opportunity for emotional, physical and spiritual healing. We hope you can join us. 9 At Table During Christmastime A Christmas candle may be lighted as the leader begins. Everyone makes the sign of the Cross. Leader: Glory to God in the highest. ALL: And peace to people of good will. Leader: Lord Jesus, in the peace of this season our spirits rejoice: with the beasts and angels, the shepherds and stars, with Mary and Joseph we sing God s praise. By your coming may the hungry be filled with good things, and may our table and home be blessed. Glory to God in the highest. All: And peace to people of good will. THE GIFT OF GOD S WORD On this day of gifts and gift-giving, it seems appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on the great gift of God s Word. Because it is creative, God s Word always points to its author, always calls us to respond. Because it is powerful, God s Word can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the transcendent with the immanent, the divine with the human. Because it is graceful, God s Word establishes a relationship of deep intimacy between us and God. At the heart of God s Word lies a tantalizing tension between the mysterious and the mundane. In our liturgical celebration, this unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of life for us and calls us to respond, to act upon that meaning. Once accepted and opened, the gift of God s Word is a gift that keeps on giving and keeps on calling us to give in return. It dares us to be like the gift giver and to become gifts for others, not only at Christmas, but at every moment of life. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Welcome Session Are you know to St. Mary Parish?
