3 from J acob s W ell Dear Friends in the Lord, Thanksgiving Day is an opportunity for us to recognize and acknowledge God s many and varied gifts to us as individuals, as families, and as people who live in these United States. Even though Thanksgiving is a secular holiday, it certainly has deep religious overtones. While we should always be grateful for having the necessities of life and for the people who have loved us and helped us in this life, the Gospel reminds us that our ultimate gratitude should be directed to God who has given us life, faith and the promise of salvation. I have come to believe that gratitude is the gateway to true happiness. Too often we focus on what is lacking or what we want. When we live our lives out of gratitude we focus on the goodness of what we have, with the realization that everything we have is a gift from God. I am grateful to continue to serve as your pastor and for the generosity of so many. I pray that you and your loved ones will experience the joy that comes from knowing you are loved by God. Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry Jacob Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow." Melody Beattie O Divine Gift-Giver, I stand beneath the endless water of your abundant gifts to me. I thank you especially for the blessing of life, the most precious of all your gifts to me. I thank you, Ever-Generous One, for clothing to wear, for food and drink to nourish my body, for all the talents and skills that you have bestowed upon me. I thank you for the many joys of my life, for family and friends, for work that gives to me a sense of purpose and invests my life with meaning. I thank you as well for the sufferings and trials of my life, which are also gifts. and which together with my mistakes are among my most important teachers. Grant that I may never greet a new day without the awareness of some gift for which to give you thanks. and may constant thanksgiving be my song of perpetual praise to you. Featured CD for November The Case for Jesus: Biblical and Historical Evidence for Christ by Dr. Brant Pitre Dr. Brant Pitre, scripture scholar and bestselling author, uses biblical and historical evidence to bolster the case for Jesus by exposing the problems with the many false theories that have been introduced over the past hundred years resulting in widespread skepticism about the reliability of Christian faith. He tackles head-on questions like: Were the four Gospels written anonymously? Did Jesus claim to be God? Did Jesus fulfill the Jewish prophecies of the Messiah? and many more. Feature CDs can be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material.

5 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer Today s Gospel is a reminder that God is a God of Love and a God of Expectations. He loves and trusts us immensely, but he expects us to be responsible with that trust. Spouses love each other deeply and trust their lives to each other, but that comes with the responsibility of living up to that trust. What is given must also be reciprocated. The same dynamic is true in our relationship with God. We might think the master in today s parable is hard on the third servant. But if we read from the beginning we will see that the master disposed of all his goods and possessions to these servants when he went on his trip. Can you imagine giving all your worldly goods to someone? There are probably not many people we love and trust that much, but that is how God loves and trusts you and me. Not only does the third servant shrink from the responsibility, he then blames his master for being a hard and cruel man! This third servant apparently has no love for the master and his sole interest is in himself and his own security. I ran across the following story which I think illustrates the choice we have in responding to God s graciousness, just like the servants in the parable: A father once went on a long journey and gave his two sons, who were construction builders, money to build him two houses. The first son spends all the money in building the father a beautiful, expensive house. But the second son, seeing an opportunity to make some money for himself, skimps on the materials and quality and builds a cheap house. When the father returns, he rewards the sons by saying, In gratitude for what you have done, I am giving each of you the house you built for me; you and your family may live in that house. You and I need to seriously look ourselves in the mirror and determine which servant, which son, are we? What does the evidence of our lives say? Today s parable is not about money. It is about taking risks, about risking what God has given in order to accomplish more for his Kingdom. It requires faith and self-denial, trusting that we will still be well taken care of by the Master. Do you and I put ourselves out there and risk rejection in order to serve the Lord? Or do we find ways to shrink from that responsibility out of fear or laziness or selfindulgence? As our liturgical year winds to its conclusion, the Church has us look at end time questions the ends of our lives and the ultimate end of the world. And when we do come to that point, as we inevitably will, none of the stuff that we spend so much of our time and energy and worries on throughout the course of our lives figures into the final picture. Houses, cars, bank accounts none of that matters. What does enter the final picture is what we have done to build God s Kingdom, to multiply what he has given us, to spread his love and mercy in the world, to nurture others in faith; what does enter the final accounting is only that which we have given away. May you and I live with trust in God s goodness and providence, grateful for all he has given. Unlike the third servant, may we risk what we have received from the Lord in order to help build up his Kingdom. Let us not skimp on the project and so live up to God s expectations and to the great trust he has placed in us. In the end, this is the only appraisal that matters. Wishing you and your family a most blessed Thanksgiving! If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the Parish Office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com. 7 To Teach Who Christ Is Capital Campaign Update The latest monthly update on the progress of our capital campaign is below. As you can see, we continue to make steady progress. The fulfillment of your generous pledges is moving St. Mary ever-closer to the goal of retiring our debt! Once the debt has been eliminated, we will then be able to address several much-needed improvements of our campus. We are deeply grateful for the commitment and generosity of everyone who has been contributing to the campaign over these many months! Results through October 31, 2017 Pledges Amount Goal $2,350,000 Pledges $2,682, % of goal Pledges Made 513 Payments This Month $38,882 Total Payments Received $1,202,523 45% of pledge$ Balance Remaining $1,480,219 Campaign Allocations 1 Target To-Date Target% Archdiocesan Education and Formation $642,000 $481,009 75% St. Mary Construction Debt 2 $1,200,000 $721,514 60% St. Mary Capital Projects 3 $508,000 $0 0% Total: $2,350,000 $1,202, Campaign payments are divided 60% to St. Mary and 40% to the Archdiocese until the Archdiocesan Education and Formation target is reached. After that point, 100% of the funds come to St. Mary. 2. The Archdiocese will match our debt payment on a 3-to-1 basis. The $1.2 million from St. Mary plus the $3.6 million from the Archdiocese will eliminate our $4.8 million construction debt 3. St. Mary Capital Projects to be funded by the campaign once the Archdiocesan Debt Retirement targets have been met are: the repaving of our parking lots; and remodeling the basement of the 1889 Church for use by PADS and parish groups. Reflecting on God s Word Some things drop into our lives and we simply run with them. Summer vacation was like that when I was a child. There was no need and certainly no desire to organize it for the sake of efficiency. Summer was better when it just happened: bike riding and pick-up softball on the school playground behind our house and swimming at Lakeside Park and going for ice cream at dusk and catching fireflies at night and a thousand other things that come together and make up summer. There are other things, however, that drop into our lives but never go anywhere, except perhaps with a lot of prodding. School comes to mind. I never would have gone had I been given a menu of options. Having my tonsils out was another such thing, and wearing braces on my teeth, and moving into a new city when I was eight, and my grandmother dying on my twelfth birthday. I took them in stride, mostly because there was no other way to take them. Given my druthers, though, they never would have happened at all. I simply lived with them, and then they were over. The Gospel this week proposes that God comes in much the same way. God gives us five talents worth of life or two talents worth or even one talent s worth, and with it enough energy to double it. Sometimes, though, God drops in when we d rather be left alone, and so we try to bury God just because the situation doesn t look very life-giving to us. Yet it can be life-giving, like the weary routine of raising children or going to the same job we ve been going to for the past twenty-five years or taking care of an aging parent. Eventually we may find out that burying such life is more deadly than the risk of living it, and living it brings a higher yield than we could ever expect. Rev. Joseph J. 8 Pre-Plan Your Burial Arrangements With Catholic Cemeteries A Consultant from Catholic Cemeteries will be present at Saint Mary of the Annunciation on November 18 th and 19th to talk about the importance of pre-planning your burial arrangements and answer any questions you may have. Questions relating to graves, crypts, cremation burial options, interest-free purchase programs, and the special St. Mary of the Annunciation discount will all be addressed. The consultants will be in the present at all of the Masses. Please stop by to say hello. If you are unable to talk with a consultant, please visit the Catholic Cemeteries website, or call their main office at Sharing Our Gifts Autumn is the season for harvesting and sharing the fruits of our labors. This week s scriptures use images of the harvest, family life, pregnancy, and investment to describe the abundant harvest in the reign of God. We discover that sharing the gifts we have been given brings eternal rewards for everyone. In the Gospel parable a master entrusts his possessions to three servants before going on a journey. Each is given some talents. What they do with those talents determines what the master will do with them when he returns. How about us? What are we doing with our talents? How will our Master treat us when he returns? Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Prepare for Simbang Gabi The mission of the Filipino-American community of St. Mary of the Annunciation is to evangelize God s love to all and to share the rich heritage of our culture. We encourage active participation of fellow Filipino parishioners to celebrate our Catholic faith in liturgy, word, and deed. We are committed to the support of our entire community, our parish, and its ministries. We invite you to the Simbang Gabi meetings held after the 11:30 AM Mass in meeting room 1. We have family-friendly activities planned. For more information or to participate in the activities, please contact Evelyn Martin at , Onnie Trinidad at , or Lani DeLaCruz at Two more meetings: December 3 and December 10. SIMBANG GABI 2017 Simbang Gabi is a unique Fillipino tradition of celebrating nine-day novena of Marian masses to heighten our preparation for the celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
