3 Office of the Archbishop 835 North Rush Street Chicago, IL archchicago.org Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, On the Second Sunday of Advent, parishes throughout the Archdiocese will participate in the annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious, benefiting more than 32,000 elderly Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests throughout the United States. Our senior religious are a treasure. Their dedication and hard work laid the foundation for Catholic schools, hospitals, and numerous social service organizations. Many continue in volunteer ministry today. Their ongoing prayer and witness enrich our faith in countless ways. Personally, I am grateful for the service of religious, past and present. Perhaps you also recall a sister or brother who made a positive difference in your life. Most elder religious worked for years for small stipends, leaving a substantial gap in retirement savings. Rising health-care costs and decreased income compound the challenge to meet such day-to-day needs as medications and nursing assistance. The Retire- ment Fund for Religious offers financial support that helps religious communities provide loving care for older members while ensuring younger members can continue the good work of their elders. In the past, the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago have led the nation in their generous response to this appeal. Though I understand you are asked to support many worthy causes, I invite you to contribute what you can at masses the weekend of December Most importantly, please pray for God s continued blessing on all our women and men religious. Rest assured they are praying for you. Wishing you every blessing during this Holy Season of Advent. With kind regards I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago from J acob s W ell Dear Friends in the Lord, This weekend we conclude another liturgical year with the solemnity entitled Our Lord Jesus Christ King of the Universe. The title of king conjures up images of castles, wealth, and power. But the feast of Christ the King is not about any of those things. It is a Christian feast that acknowledges the place of Christ in our lives and in the life of the Church. Christ is to be the center of our worship and our life of faith. We who strive to serve in the name of Jesus will always miss the mark to some degree because we are all sinners. It is Christ who sanctifies the work entrusted to each of us. It is Christ that redeems us and offers us the grace of forgiveness. In today's gospel reading we are in a sense given the answers to our final exam before the Lord. The irony is that, on this feast of honoring Christ the King, the scriptures tell us about the serving those who are in need. There is no greater honor given to Christ than when we serve others in his name. Just to be Christian and credible requires us to care for the poor, the vulnerable, the sick and the sinner. However, something more is asked of us. We need to see Christ in one another. This is not something that is always easy to do. In order to see Christ in one another means we must look for the good in them instead of judging or focusing on the negative aspects of their lives. So much of today's public discourse centers on the sin of the world. The abuses of power and sinful and scandalous behaviors of others fill the headlines and we can t help but find our- selves caught up in them. Even within our own families and our community, negative gossip and criticism can blur our vision to the goodness that is in another. Perhaps the first and most important task for us who profess to be Christian is to strive to live as Jesus did, with hearts that are open and willing to recognize the dignity of others and their need for healing, forgiveness, reconciliation, acceptance and love. It is said that a child needs the love of a parent when he or she least deserves it. Often that love is what we call a tough love that names the sin but loves the sinner. The Scriptures tell us that two things will happen on judgment day. First, we will discover that the needy to whom we reached were in fact Christ; and second, we will discover that with Christ we will indeed inherit the kingdom prepared for us from the foundation of the world. The prayer of the Church describes it as an eternal and universal Kingdom, a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace and a kingdom of justice, love and peace. May this be kingdom that you and I truly seek. Next Sunday marks the beginning of a new liturgical year with the season of Advent. This penitential season calls us to be watchful and alert to Christ s presence among us. The prophet Isiah reminds us that we can easily become distracted and forget what truly matters. May this Advent help us to focus and attend to those things that matter to God. Let us pray for one another, Fr Jerry

If you have a desire to grow deeper in your prayer life and encounter the Lord s living Heart, come on out and give this a try. Fr. Matt Alexander is hosting a simple evening of prayer with the Word and adoration of the Word. Featured CD for November The Case for Jesus: Biblical and Historical Evidence for Christ by Dr. Brant Pitre Dr. Brant Pitre, scripture scholar and bestselling author, uses biblical and historical evidence to bolster the case for Jesus by exposing the problems with the many false theories that have been introduced over the past hundred years resulting in widespread skepticism about the reliability of Christian faith. He tackles head-on questions like: Were the four Gospels written anonymously? Did Jesus claim to be God? Did Jesus fulfill the Jewish prophecies of the Messiah? and many more. Feature CDs can be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material.

5 Deacon Deliberations by Deacon Gary Kupsak Thanksgiving - A Time for Giving Thanks Well by now, most of the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes cranberries and pumpkin pie that was so ravenously consumed last Thursday should be gone. Depending on the size of the bird, turkey sandwiches will be a staple around many households. Although Thanksgiving Day marks a hallowed holiday for most Americans, a day on which we joyfully commit to giving thanks for all God s blessings, and celebrate that day with a sumptuous meal shared with family and friends; sometimes when we place all our energies in determining if the main course will be roasted or deep fried turkey, maybe even turducken (a chicken stuffed in a duck that are then both stuffed in a turkey) we lose sight of how the day is all about giving thanks to God for all the blessings he has sent our way. Whether we re eating turducken or a Big Mac, it s all about our giving thanks to God for all our blessings. But life sometimes throws us a curve doesn t it? Sometimes although we know that God is good and loves us beyond all imagination, not so good things happen in our lives that dampen the joy of that usually wonderful Thanksgiving Day. It may be a death in the family, it may be a serious illness in one of the family members, it may be the loss of a job or the dissolution of a marriage, but at times, a usually happy Thanksgiving Day is somewhat clouded by the realities of being human. This year that was the case with my family s Thanksgiving. Grammie was not feeling so well and not up to cooking a full meal, the kids and grandkids were popping in and out fitting in a vivit/ meal at our home and then at their in-laws homes, while still being at work on time to work their 3-11 shifts at their respective police agencies. The answer; a Boston Market Thanksgiving Feast (pretty good I must say). As has been the tradition of the day, grampa says grace. What follows is my heartfelt plea to our Heavenly Father for healing and comfort, recognizing the many blessing already heaped upon us. I hope you may find it spiritually comforting and a worthy blessing. Dear God, We thank you for your blessings and bring our needs before you today. We need your healing and your grace. We need hope restored. We need to be reminded that you work on behalf of those you love, constantly, powerfully, completely. Forgive us for trying to fix our situations all on our own. Forgive us for running all different directions and spinning our wheels to find help, when help and healing must be found first in You. Forgive us for forgetting how much we need you above everyone and everything else. We come to you, baring the places we are hurting. You see where no one else is able to fully see or understand. You know the pain we carry, the burdens we shoulder. As we give you thanks for this bountiful food, we humbly ask for your grace to heal each of our wounds and heartaches. Thank you for you mighty power, your many blessings that act on behalf of all your children. Give us the patience to accept your will and live our lives for your greater glory. Amen. My dear friends in Christ, Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love endures forever. (1 Chronicles 16:34). 7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer The full official name of today s feast is: The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Sounds like something that should be celebrated with red carpets, trumpets and jewels. You and I have trouble grasping this liturgical feast because we Americans have a fundamental problem relating to the concept of kingship. While we are fascinated by the pomp and lifestyles of royalty, we are not so fond of it that we would want any form of hereditary royalty establish in our country. Indeed, we were born as a nation in a war fought to rid ourselves of a king. Rather, we proclaim that all men are created equal (even if our historical track record regarding equality is littered with huge chasms and potholes). As a bastion of democracy, we are suspicious of any form of absolute monarchy and don t really know how to embrace the concept of King. The problem, of course, is that none of the political parallels apply to our relationship with Christ. We need to work out of an opposite and unfamiliar paradigm when it comes to Christ. Jesus is not simply our equal and buddy, although he fully shares our humanity; He is the eternal Word incarnate through whom the entire universe was created. We owe Him reverence and worship. We belong to a Kingdom that is not made of power, wealth, or politics. Rather, the Kingdom of God to which we have professed our loyalty is built of compassion, service, sacrifice, forgiveness, humility, and love. The truth of Christ requires that we look at the world upside down and inside out. Jesus completely upends our beloved status quo. As today s Gospel reading shows, we can only be saved when we accept that we are not the ones in charge and when, like the sheep, we live for others first and ourselves second. The condemned goats, on the other hand, were content to occasionally give scraps of their time, effort and resources to others once they had satisfied their own needs. They failed to see the presence of God in the faces of others, particularly in the faces of those in need. The goats are condemned for their indifference, neglect and self-centeredness. The aspect of Matthew s judgment scene that really scares me is that it is what we don t do when we had a chance to do good that will be the cause of our own downfall at least as much as (if not more than) our sinful actions. As many sins as I commit, I have to admit that my sins of omission or of token response are far more plentiful. Author Patrice J. Tuohy writes: Today s gospel doesn t paint such a rosy picture for the final scene in our lives. Jesus warns us that those of us who don t get it right the stubborn goats in the crowd are going to be punished. But the problem is, we don t have [someone] standing over our shoulders watching our every move and letting us know when we ve really messed up. Some will try to tell us, but they may not always know the full story. We may even sense our most grievous sins ourselves, but ultimately we have no foolproof means of assessing and judging our human behavior as we head toward judgment day. In fact, the only way to be sure of inheriting God s Kingdom is to do God s work of love. On judgment day, we ll be placed to God s right if we ve done right by others. Why delay? Go and do the right thing. The Solemnity of Christ the King challenges us to embrace the reign of God, a kingdom of justice, service, sacrifice and reconciliation. This Kingdom and its work must be our highest priority. Thus, we must assess whether our lives clearly demonstrate that we belong to Christ s Kingdom or whether instead we belong to the realm of greed, power, and self-indulgence. It s easy to say Christ is our #1, but what does the evidence of our life say? Whose kingdom do we really belong to? This is the only question that will be asked at our judgment. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the parish office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com. Advent Reconciliation Service A short prayer service followed by an extended period for examination and individual confession. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament December 12 Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will take place in the Eucharistic chapel on Tuesday, December 12, from 8:30 AM until 8:30 PM. The sign-up book is in the narthex. Tuesday December 19 7:00 PM

8 Second collection on December 9 & 10 Elderly Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests need your help. Many served for years in Catholic schools, hospitals, and parishes often for little to no pay. Now there is a shortage in retirement savings. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious provides funding for medications, nursing care, and more. Please give to those who have given a lifetime. Donations to the Retirement Fund for Religious support more than 32,000 senior religious and their communities. Most older sisters, brothers, and religious order priests worked for small stipends, leaving a large deficit in retirement funding. Each year, proceeds from the annual collection help hundreds of religious communities furnish medications, nursing care, and other necessities. A portion also underwrites assistance for retirement planning and education. This support helps communities address funding challenges so they can care for elder members while continuing important ministries to the People of God. Prepare for Simbang Gabi The mission of the Filipino-American community of St. Mary of the Annunciation is to evangelize God s love to all and to share the rich heritage of our culture.
