3 from J acob s W ell Dear Parishioners, Congratulations to our young people who received the Sacrament of Confirmation this past Friday night and also to their parents and sponsors. I am grateful for all who helped form our young people especially their catechists and for the ministry of Sue Matousek, our Director of Religious Education, and Grant Bright, our youth minister. As our young people begin their high school years, we pray that the sevenfold gifts of the Spirit wisdom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence and wonder will strengthen them. On the day of their Baptism we promised to bring them up in the practice of the faith. As they become young adults and make more and more choices for themselves, I think we should remember and share with them our hopes and dreams for them. Certainly we desire for them to develop their God-given gifts and talents and to become the persons God wants them to be. We want them to be happy and to embrace the faith we have sacrificed to teach them. We hope they develop a sense of calling and a steadfast moral compass. We also hope that they will continue to grow in their faith as disciples of Jesus. We want them to be generous and concerned about the needs of others, especially the poor and those who are most in need. Our young people still need to be accompanied by families and role models who are not afraid to live their own faith. May we always strive to provide a good example for them so that they may follow in our footsteps. This weekend marks the 16 th anniversary of the dedication of our main church, narthex, meeting rooms, and parish offices. I remember having many conversations with Fr. Ron Lewinski during the planning and building and dedication. On our corner stone, located near the bell tower is the inscription: "The people of Saint Mary at Fremont Center dedicate this Church to the Glory of God, In Honor of Saint Mary of the Annunciation. 'FOR NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD.' (Luke 1:37)" Fr. Ron s vision and passion for the Sacred Liturgy is reflected in the design and sacred art that adorns our beautiful sanctuary. As we near the one year anniversary of the sudden death of Fr. Ron Lewinski, we are planning to dedicate a special garden and bench where Fr. Ron used to sit and pray and watch over the construction of the church. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, July 14 th after the 5:00 PM Mass as we mark the one year anniversary of his passing into Eternal Life Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry The people gather on the plaza before processing into the narthex. 16th Anniversary of Dedication of New Church April 14, 2002 April 14, 2018 Under Construction, Autumn 2001 Seen from Erhart Road Procession from the little church

Childcare at 9:30 Mass Childcare is available during the 9:30 Sunday morning Mass in Meeting Room 3. questions: Reflecting on God s Word Some vaccinations only last so long. After a predictable amount of time the immunity wears off and people are susceptible to the same old disease again. Thatʹs when itʹs time for a booster shot. It seems that we also need booster shots for faith. Baptism alone is not enough. The joy and peace that filled our communities two weeks ago are probably starting to flag and our old selves may be starting to re-emerge. We need a weekly dose of Resurrection appearances, in the Eucharist we share. All three of this weekʹs readings as well as the psalm point out the weakness of our human faith. Yet they emphasize the forgiveness and blessing that are always available to those who turn to ʺJesus Christ the righteous one.ʺ Can we recognize ourselves in Lukeʹs Gospel today? Do we realize how deeply we depend on our weekly ʺbooster shotʺ of the Eucharist to remember and reclaim the saving presence of the risen Lord? --Virginia Stillwell Copyright (c) 2014, World Library Publications. Featured CD for April Weekend Mass Times: Sat. 5:00pm Sun. 7:30, 9:30,11:30am Understanding Luther: A Catholic Perspective on the Protestant Reformation By Ken Hensley Ken Hensley, a well-known Catholic speaker, teacher, and author, provides an insightful perspective on Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation from his vantage point as a former Baptist minister. Referencing Luther s writings and his own conversion story, Ken clearly shows the theological and practical flaws of sola Scriptura and other teachings promulgated by the sixteenth-century reformers. Both Catholics and Protestants are sure to benefit from this fascinating presentation! Feature CDs may be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material.
5 We continue to make solid progress towards our To Teach Who Christ Is campaign goal, although payments declined noticeably last month. We are deeply grateful for the commitment and generosity of everyone who has been contributing to the campaign over these many months! Once the parish debt has been eliminated, we will then be able to address several much-needed improvements of our campus. We recognize that unforeseen hardships can arise which may cause an alteration to the timing of your payment plan, but apart from such serious events we kindly ask you to help us reach our goal by making your payments according to the schedule you selected. Currently there are $42,705 in past-due payments from active pledges. Again, thank you for your dedication and generosity! We are so blessed to have so many wonderful volunteers. RSVP to poletto@comcast.net. St. Mary Garden Ministry St. Mary of the Annunciation is very blessed with its rural setting and beautiful campus. The abundance of flowers, plants, trees and shrubs gives us abundant opportunities to experience God through the beauty of nature. Our meditation garden with its meandering paths and shrines to the Holy Family and St. Francis provide an exceptional environment for prayer and reflection. With the size of our grounds, maintaining the beauty of our gardens and flowerbeds for all to enjoy is no small endeavor. To help with this important effort, we are inviting you to join our Garden Ministry. No experience is necessary, just a willing heart and up to 1-2 hours of your time per week through the Spring and Summer. You may sign up for your own garden area and work on it according to your availability each week. Or you can join in a group maintaining a larger area. We will also have Spring and Fall clean-up days. The Coordinator of the Garden Ministry, Rich Peterson, will provide overall guidance on plants and what needs to be done in each area so that everything fits together. The Parish will provide some plants and supplies, but we appreciate donations as well. Opportunities to spend social and prayer time together will also be offered. Please complete the form below return to the Parish Office (in person, via , or drop in the collection basket). A kick-off meeting will be held on April 17 at 8:00 AM. Joining in this ministry is also an excellent opportunity for students looking for service hours. For more information, please call or text Richard ST. 7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer What is your image of heaven? We all have one. Writers and painters through the ages have speculated. Even the human authors of Scripture fantasized about what the next world is like, using dozens of different images and metaphors. So why shouldn t you and I ponder this question?! After all, heaven is where we hope to be one day! It seems particularly appropriate to ponder heaven during the Easter season when we celebrate the gift of eternal life. Several years ago the editors of U.S. Catholic magazine conducted a survey of their readers notions of heaven. Author Tom McGrath observed the following about the responses given: Many respondents pictured heaven as a rural setting such as a walled garden, a mountaintop cabin, or a haven in the woods. When asked to comment on the results, church historian Martin Marty said that a culture s image of heaven says a lot about its present situation. Because ours is becoming an increasingly urban culture, heaven for us is what seems just beyond our grasp a natural retreat from the rush of daily life in city or town. But when the Book of Revelation was written, a nomadic, farming culture looked to the shimmering city as their heavenly ideal. Majestic, rising from the plains, shining in the sun, the city captured the imagination of the people as a place of promise and joy. For each of us, our idea of heaven likely holds a clue as to what s missing in our life. For most modern families, that something missing is peace and serenity. Jesus offers us peace, a peace that surpasses our understanding. The way to it is simple, but not easy. It s to love the people we encounter day by day. If we do that with all our hearts, we ll know what Saint Catherine of Siena meant when she said, All the way to heaven is heaven. The idea that our personal notion of what heaven is like in fact reflects what we feel is missing in our present life makes a strong impression for me. As I examine my own notion of heaven I easily see that I most definitely fit this pattern. Perhaps you will find that the same is true for you. But does this insight serve any useful purpose or is it just mind candy? Well, I do think there is a lesson we can learn and use from this insight. Jesus did not call us to live an other-worldly future existence that is detached from the present. Rather, he asks us to transform the present world to match the fullness of the next. The Kingdom of God isn t just a heavenly future in a galaxy far, far away ; the Kingdom is meant to be here and now too. To the extent that we become so fixated on a heavenly future that we ignore or minimize the present world and its sufferings, we give credence to Karl Marx s statement that religion is the opium of the people. Rather, as we recognize what we are missing in our personal lives and in the world around us, you and I have been commissioned as the Lord s disciples to take steps to fill that longing, to bridge that gap, through our love of Christ and through service to his Gospel. Heaven starts now, not after we die. As an Easter People transformed by the Risen Lord, our daily lives must change the present world into a better reflection of the one to come. When you and I see that the Kingdom of God has already begun here and now, then we will join St. Catherine in grasping that all the way to heaven is heaven. Of course, all of our notions of heaven are very inadequate due to our limited human understanding. As wonderful as we can imagine things, God s imagination far surpasses ours. Join us at Vacation Bible School June 18-22, 2018 Registration forms are now on the parish web site or in the kiosk in the narthex. Hurry before open enrollment starts on April 23! Believing in Jesus Christ Throughout the Easter season, all three of the Sunday readings are taken from the New Testament the Christian scriptures. Together they explore what it means to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the One who fulfilled the prophecies of the Jewish scriptures. Today s selections refer to our human weakness, yet they emphasize the forgiveness and peace that are available to those who put their faith in Jesus Christ the righteous one (1 John 2:2). In the Acts of the Apostles Peter invites everyone to repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away (Acts 3:19). The First Letter of John calls Jesus Christ expiation for our sins (1 John 2:2). Finally, in the Gospel Jesus greets the disciples with Peace and urges them to preach repentance, for the forgiveness of sins (Luke 24:47). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Living God's Word The Eucharist is meant to energize us to take Christ's presence out into the world. It may be easy to see ourselves in today's scriptures as the weak sinners, but we should also envision ourselves in the roles of Peter, John, and Luke. In the Eucharist Jesus feeds us and sends us to "preach in his name to all the nations" (Luke 24:47). We are his witnesses. Copyright (c) 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. 10 JOIN US FOR THE EARTH DAY RETREAT: Sunday, April 22 9:00am-4:30pm At Cardinal Stritch Retreat Center in Mundelein Mass at 11:00am, a prayerful opportunity for walks, talks, and action plans to live as good stewards of all God has given to us! Register in the parish office or go to the website: pvm.archchicago.org/creation and scroll down to Earth Day Retreat HAVE ANY POPES SPOKEN ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT? Dubbed the green Pope, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI emphasized a human ecology that stresses the link between the well-being of the environment and human beings. The way humanity treats the environment influences the way it treats itself, and vice versa Every violation of solidarity and civic friendship harms the environment, just as environmental deterioration in turn upsets relations in society (Caritas in Veritate, no. 51). The Holy Father Pope Francis echoes Pope Benedict, saying that We are called not only to respect the natural environment, but also to show respect for, and solidarity with, all the members of our human family. These two dimensions are closely related (Papal Audience, June 5, 2013). WHAT EFFECT IS CLIMATE CHANGE HAVING ON THE WORLD S MOST VULNERABLE PEOPLE? When natural disaster strikes, people living in fragile homes and those whose livelihoods depend on nature are the most devastated. WHAT CAN I DO TO CARE FOR GOD S CREATION? Taking small, conscious steps in your everyday life can help you reflect on our call to care for creation and make an impact on the environment. Simple things like composting kitchen scraps, recycling and eating less meat can reduce waste and shrink your carbon footprint. Turning down your thermostat, shutting off the lights when you leave a room and making sure your car tires are properly inflated mean you ll use less energy from nonrenewable resources and save some money! Even the things we buy can make a difference. Fair trade means that workers in other countries were paid a fair wage and ensures that products were created through environmentally responsible practices. By buying fair trade products like coffee, chocolate, clothing and home decor, you support workers and the environment. HUMAN CONCERNS COMMISSION: The mission of the Human Concerns Commission is to promote the word and manifest the love of Jesus Christ by helping those who are in need, following the principle that whatever you do to the least of my people, you do unto me. The Military Ministry thanks all who have generously donated to the collection for items to be included in Care Packages which will be sent to our troops through the HELP USA TROOPS organization. *If you know of someone currently deployed, please let us know so we can insure that they receive a care package! Call the parish office for more information. JOIN US FOR THIS SPECIAL DAY! YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID!!! WHAT OUR FAITH COMMUNITY CAN DO TO MINISTER TO THOSE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS: People with mental illness and their families often feel isolated from their faith community and thus isolated from God. Isolation is often caused by the stigma of the disease, or fear of being judged as inadequate or weak willed, or the misperception that God is punishing them because they did something wrong, or the community s misperception of what mental illness is and how it affects the individual and their families. As a healing community we can support people with mental illness and their families with unconditional non-judgmental love in the following ways: increase our awareness of mental illness and where to get help; offer payers and support to individuals and families who are affected by mental illness; serve on parish ministries in outreach to individuals and families; get involved with justice issues affecting mental health care. *If you would like more info, please contact Deacon Al Sedivy or Diane Mulroe Human Concern Commission Members: Carey Marciniak, Chairperson; Deacon Gary Kupsak, Kathleen DeCaire- Aden, Kris Crotty, Linda Green, Tom Hanley, Mary Lou Loomis, Sue Poletto, Dan Prezell, Kristi Smith, Jan Swanson, Romaine Van Zeyl, Nydia Welles, Diane Mulroe, Staff Liaison Join us for meetings 4th Wednesdays 3:30pm

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered by the parish priest upon request. We welcome new members who wish to worship with us and support the parish s work and mission. New Parishioner Welcome session is offered on the 2nd Sunday of the month. Time of registration is 10:45AM 11:25AM. If you are unable to make the Welcoming Session, please call the parish office to schedule time to register.
