1 NOVEMBER 10, ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Living God s Word As we go through life we d like to know just whom we are going to spend eternity with and what it s going to be like. The truth is that none of us knows. Maybe the best we can do at this time is love those around us now, and let God take care of our future. Copyright 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved Reflecting on God's Word We have many hungers in life, and sometimes we can overindulge in response to them. Still, one that never goes away is our hunger to be connected. We desperately shun living in isolation. For many it is marriage that feeds that hunger, but so do family or friendships or the simple attention one finds in a community of faith or a collection of back yards. They all seem to feed our yearning for deep life, even when we are inattentive or preoccupied. A person of faith might even say that these communities are God being faithful to us. This week's Gospel is one that turns the tables on us. It snares us in our own curiosity about what heaven will be like, and whether we will know the ones we love and be with our spouses, and what if we've been married seven times? And that's just where Jesus turns the tables and says it's about relationships and not about bodies to be with; it's about our deepest hungers to be united, even beyond marriage and friends and neighbors and communities of any sort. That's what resurrection is about, Jesus replies, and then reminds us one more time (as if we'd been deaf all the other times) that God has promised it and God is faithful. God "is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive," is how Luke has Jesus saying it (Luke 20:38). In other words, all of our relationships of loving and caring, especially those of marriage, are but hints of real and full life, and the best is yet to come. So what you've found in marriage, even if you've been married seven times, is just the beginning. --Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright (c) 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Veteran s Day November 11 Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices. -President Harry S. Truman

3 Red Ribbon Week at St. Mary School Each year, at the end of October our students participate in Red Ribbon Week a campaign to promote making good, healthy choices. During the week, the students discussed good choices and signed a pledge to work on making good choices in their everyday life. This positive message carried on into the week by playing a Sock it to Drugs game in gym, having a red treat day, wearing red to school day and winning prizes for participation. On Thursday, parents were invited to watch students perform in a Positive Alternatives to Negative Behaviors Talent Show. Each student was given a red ribbon to wear throughout the week to show their promise to making positive choices. We THANK everyone who purchased, donated & helped out this weekend with the pie sales! It was very successful! We sold 128 pies and received 72 donations! We still need about 20 more donated pies and 158 pies sold to make the 500 pie goal and a 45% profit. We may be a small school but we know we can do this! So please consider donating or purchasing pies - orders can be taken until Wednesday 11 pm. Please contact me if you have any questions or beckycasper@comcast.net. Thank You & God Bless! Becky & Dan Casper The Narthex Is for Conversations So that the sanctuary may remain a place of quiet preparation, a respectful silence is requested in the sanctuary before Mass. During our Sesquicentennial year the History Committee presents weekly selections from the treasure chest of our precious past. Another attempt to build a church in Fremont Center was made in Unfortunately, this plan was cancelled because the man who owned the land died. Although the man s name is not mentioned in the letter, it is believed to be Bernard Erhart ( ), who had a reputation for hosting travelling priests who would visit and say Mass in his home. If Bernard did not die, the church might be located on Erhart Road west of Fremont Center Road, instead of on the east side like it is today.

4 Christmas Gifts for Families in Need St. Mary will once again participate in providing Christmas presents to families in need at our sharing parish, Holy Family in Waukegan. Instead of a Giving Tree with tags on it, we will have a table in the narthex after all masses on the weekend of November 16 & 17. Holy Family family wish lists will be available for you to choose from. A St. Mary s family can purchase gifts on their own or go in with another family. Individual gifts will not be an option. Each St. Mary family who wishes to participate will purchase gifts for an entire family. All gifts will be delivered to Holy Family on Sunday, December 8. 5 Advent Presentation The Infancy Narratives: The Birth of Christ in Our Lives Presented by Friar Johnpaul Cafiero, OFM Wednesday, December 4, :30-9:00 p.m. at the St. Mary Parish Center Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:11) The nativity story from the Gospels is one that seems very familiar. However, a closer look at the accounts in Matthew and Luke shows that there are many significant differences, with few details of the story in common. Our Christmas observances tend to blend the two accounts into one story, but each account from Luke and Matthew has a distinct voice, to convey a different message. Both invite readers to become disciples of Jesus as God s son, but they do so with a different focus, using different people, places and attitudes. In this evening presentation we will examine the Infancy Narratives found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. We will explore their unique theologies and how these theologies affect their very different accounts. **Please register to allow the parish to plan for the sessions** You may register online at or by returning this form to the parish office. There is no cost to attend but a $5.00 donation to the Adult Formation ministry is suggested. About the presenter... Friar Johnpaul Cafiero, OFM is a Franciscan Priest of the Sacred Heart Province of Chicago/St. Louis. He received his B.A. at Seton Hall University; M.A. in Psychology/Philosophy at Boston University; Master of Divinity - Liturgy/Scripture at Catholic Theological Union/University of Chicago; and Doctor of Ministry - Psychology/Theology at University St. Mary of the Lake. As a follower of St. Francis of Assisi, Friar Johnpaul has a love and commitment to serving the poor and outcast. A former police officer, he has worked extensively in counseling within the juvenile detention system and also to counsel victims of physical and sexual abuse. He is currently a pastoral associate and preacher at Holy Family Parish in Inverness and a well-known international speaker. Friar Johnpaul s love of the poor and outcast is surpassed only by his love of Scripture, which is readily evident in his preaching and presentations. Registration Form The Infancy Narratives - Giving Birth to Christ in our Lives Registration is requested to allow the parish to plan for the session. All are welcome to attend. You may register online at the Adult Formation page on the parish website or by returning this form to the parish office. There is no cost to attend but a $5.00 donation is suggested to support the Adult Faith Formation Ministry. Donations can be made on the night of the event or to the parish office or online at For questions regarding the presentation, call the parish office or jenpepping@sbcglobal.net. You cannot imagine how much better your marriage will be once you start applying Allen Hunt s life - changing wisdom to your relationship and life! -- Matthew Kelly Dr. Allen Hunt an engaging, inspiring national speaker on marriage Dr. Allen Hunt s current partnership with Matthew Kelly and the Dynamic Catholic Institute marks the latest step of his fascinating faith journey. Allen left a lucrative business career to become an ordained pastor, ultimately serving as a senior minister in a United Methodist mega church in Alpharetta, Georgia. Allen credits his conversion to Catholicism in 2008 in part to the continuous prayers of a group of Dominican sisters he befriended at a lecture in Allen now hosts a nationally broadcast radio show and writes a weekly column on life and faith for the website Townhall.com. His Methodist preacher heritage formed him into an engaging, highly motivational speaker; his conversion experience brings a Catholic sensibility to his reflections on married life. We are delighted that our parish has been selected by Matthew Kelly s Dynamic Catholic Institute to host Dr. Allen Hunt this February when he presents Passion & Purpose for Marriage right here at St. Mary!
