1 APRIL 19, RD SUNDAY IN EASTER Living God s Word The Eucharist is meant to energize us to take Christ's presence out into the world. It may be easy to see ourselves in today's scriptures as the weak sinners, but we should also envision ourselves in the roles of Peter, John, and Luke. In the Eucharist Jesus feeds us and sends us to "preach in his name to all the nations" (Luke 24:47). We are his witnesses. Copyright (c) 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Reflecting on God s Word Some vaccinations only last so long. After a predictable amount of time the immunity wears off and people are susceptible to the same old disease again. That s when it s time for a booster shot. It seems that we also need booster shots for faith. Baptism alone is not enough. The joy and peace that filled our communities two weeks ago are probably starting to flag and our old selves may be starting to reemerge. We need a weekly dose of Resurrection appearances, in the Eucharist we share. All three of this week s readings as well as the psalm point out the weakness of our human faith. Yet they emphasize the forgiveness and blessing that are always available to those who turn to Jesus Christ the righteous one. Can we recognize ourselves in Luke s Gospel today? Do we realize how deeply we depend on our weekly booster shot of the Eucharist to remember and reclaim the saving presence of the risen Lord? 5 Dear St. Mary Parishioners: Last fall, I was inspired to watch a group of dedicated parishioners come together to create a vision for the future of St. Mary. It was an amazing journey that helped me to better understand the needs of the parish and the way in which we are being called to serve God at this place and time in history. Thank you to the many who walked this journey with me and so generously shared their time and their love for St. Mary. Over the next several months I will be sharing more about the Parish Transformation Plan, including new parish leadership structures to support all the work of the parish. I invite you to read more about the St. Mary PT plan in the following pages. Please continue to pray for St. Mary as we respond to our call to serve the mission of Christ. Let us pray for one another, What is Parish Transformation? Parish Transforma on (PT) is a process offered through the Archdiocese of Chicago to strengthen parishes and help them to be more effec ve in fulfilling the mission Christ entrusted to his Church. The objec ves of PT work are: Renew parish commitment to the Mission of Christ. Create a unified pastoral vision for the future that links mission and resources. Establish goals and define resources necessary to accomplish the mission. What have we done so far at St. Mary? Over 12 weeks, a team of over 50+ volunteers worked together to iden fy strengths and unique gi s that give our parish its dis nct character. Through the help of a facilitator, and using input from our parish survey, the team assessed the current state of the parish, areas of opportunity, and created a vision for the future to recommit our parish to the mission of Christ. A er much prayer and reflec on, the team created a new Mission Narra ve for St. Mary Parish and developed a detailed Ac on Plan for the areas of focus (shared in the following pages). What s coming next? This is just the beginning! Now that the planning phase is complete, we have transi oned to the implementa on phase. Many teams have formed to research and explore areas of opportunity iden fied in the Parish Plan. Brian Dalton, the St. Mary implementa on coordinator, will help to manage ac on teams created to start work on the Parish Plan, which will con- nue over the next few years. Father Jerry will con nue to speak about important updates as work con nues. Fr. Jerry will also host a Leadership Forma on Evening on Tuesday, May 5th for those interested in learning more about serving on parish leadership commissions. Watch for this invita on in the bulle n. How can you help? Read more about the St. Mary ac on plan and areas of focus in the following pages. Talk with the PT team members about the work and their excitement for the future. Watch the bulle n, and the PT page at for ways you can get involved! The planning phase was just the beginning. It is now up to all of us to transform St. Mary for its mission in service to Christ. Please con nue to pray for St. Mary, and for all those who con nue to build the Kingdom of God. For ques ons on implementa on plans, call the parish office or contact Brian Dalton at Booksdalton@gmail.com.

6 Building the Parish Transformation Plan A team of 50+ St. Mary parishioners worked together to build a vision for the future. Prayerful Reflection Process began with 6 weeks of reflec on and con- nued group discussion. The St. Mary Parish Transforma on Team prayerfully considered: Our rich parish history and who we are. The charism of our patron saint, the blessed Mary of the Annuncia on. Strengths of the parish, termed our Pearls of Great Price, and also areas of opportunity. The team selected two areas of focus, Communio and Call to Holiness, supported by a renewed Spiritual Stewardship, to revitalize and recommit our parish to the Mission of Christ. Vision for the Future Using what was learned during the weeks of reflec- on, and with input from the parish survey, the team created an ac on plan, which includes: A Mission Narra ve to ar culate the unique way in which St. Mary is called to live out the mission of Christ at this me and place. A unified pastoral vision for the future that links mission and resources to support the parish in its mission. A plan with defined ac on items to strengthen the parish and increase the engagement and par cipa on of parishioners. New Parish Leadership As part of the plan, the team recognized the urgent need for leadership structure at St. Mary. In addi on to the Office of the Pastor and the Parish Staff, an expanded leadership structure is essen al to suppor ng the plan and the mission of the parish. The Pastoral Council is necessary to serve in an advisory capacity to the pastor, to priori ze parish needs, and provide leadership in planning for the future. Leadership Commissions are needed to coordinate the efforts of parish ministries and communicate with the Pastoral Council.

7 The St. Mary Parish Transformation Action Plan Includes two primary areas of focus: Communio and Call to Holiness. These focus areas do not work separately, but together to support parishioners and the parish in mission. A financial ac on plan that connects resources to support the plan and all the work of the parish. The expanded leadership structure to support the parish in mission, includes a new Pastoral Council, and Leadership Commissions. These structures will coordinate all ministries at St. Mary. Building Blocks to Mission The St. Mary Parish Transforma on Team selected these two important areas of focus for its plan: Communio: A focus on Communio is more than simply building community at the parish. Communio is a community centered in Christ, bound by the sacrament of bap sm, strengthened in the Eucharist, where all feel welcome and supported. Communio will create evangelizers and missionaries for God s work. Call to Holiness: Through bap sm, we are all called to holiness, each in our own unique way. We grow in holiness with the help of others, walking together on this journey of faith. Our parish must foster spiritual growth, provide companionship and affirma on, and help people to discern God s call for their life. St. Mary will strive to be fer le ground from which saints can grow.

Let it be done to me according to Your will (Luke 1:38). We, the people of St. Mary of the Annuncia on, are called by God, as His humble servants, to respond with our own yes. Like Mary, we do not fully understand what God s call means, but we know that through our yes, we give witness to the Joy of the Gospel, as with complete trust, we follow wherever God may lead us. We are one body in Christ with many diverse parts, called to discern our personal gi s and respond with absolute commitment to God s call to holiness in our lives. As one family of faith with many, varied gi s and callings, we seek to grow ever deeper in our own rela onship with Christ. Recognizing that we have been richly blessed, we are called to return those gi s to the Lord by serving his people, bringing the light of Christ to the world beyond our parish campus, par cularly to those in greatest need. To realize this calling, we must allow our shared faith, the common thread that binds the patchwork of diversity among our parish family, to unite us and inspire us to truly live as men and women for others. If the long and storied history of our parish holds any lesson for us today, it is that when we heed the words of the Angel Gabriel that nothing is impossible with God, we too can accomplish things that once seemed impossible. Building on this heritage and upon the firm founda on of our many vibrant ministries, our beau ful and prayerful liturgies, and our many mission and outreach opportuni es, we will work to engage all genera ons and reach out to the lost and those who have le the Lord s table, adap ng the ways we communicate and mee ng people where they are on their faith journeys. Inspired by our patron, Mary of the Annuncia on, we will strive at all mes and in all ways to become an ever more vibrant community, rooted in the Eucharist as the source and summit of our lives, and ready, as one family of faith, to say Yes to God s call.

10 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer What is your image of heaven? We all have one. Writers and painters through the ages have speculated. Even the human authors of Scripture fantasized about what the next world is like, using dozens of different images and metaphors. So why shouldn t we ponder this question?! After all, heaven is where we hope to be one day! It seems especially appropriate to ponder heaven during the Easter season when we celebrate the gift of eternal life. Several years ago the editors of U.S. Catholic magazine conducted a survey of their readers notions of heaven. Author Tom McGrath made the following observations regarding the survey and the responses given: Many respondents pictured heaven as a rural setting such as a walled garden, a mountaintop cabin, or a haven in the woods. When asked to comment on the results, church historian Martin Marty said that a culture s image of heaven says a lot about its present situation. Because ours is becoming an increasingly urban culture, heaven for us is what seems just beyond our grasp a natural retreat from the rush of daily life in city or town. But when the Book of Revelation was written, a nomadic, farming culture looked to the shimmering city as their heavenly ideal. Majestic, rising from the plains, shining in the sun, the city captured the imagination of the people as a place of promise and joy. For each of us, our idea of heaven likely holds a clue as to what s missing in our life. For most modern families, that something missing is peace and serenity. Jesus offers us peace, a peace that surpasses our understanding. The way to it is simple, but not easy. It s to love the people we encounter day by day. If we do that with all our hearts, we ll know what Saint Catherine of Siena meant when she said, All the way to heaven is heaven. The idea that our personal notion of what heaven is like in fact reflects what we feel is missing in our present life really struck me. As I examined my own notion of heaven I must admit that I definitely conform to this pattern. Perhaps you will find that the same is true for you. But does this insight serve any useful purpose or is it just intellectual mind candy? I think there is a lesson we can learn and use. Jesus did not call us to only live an other-worldly existence. Rather, he asks us to transform the present world to match the fullness of the next. The Kingdom of God isn t just a heavenly future in a galaxy far, far away ; the Kingdom is meant to be here and now, too. To the extent that we become so fixated on a heavenly future that we ignore or minimize the present world, we give credence to Karl Marx s statement that religion is the opium of the people. Rather, as we recognize what it is we are missing in our personal lives and in the world around us, we should take some steps to fill that longing through our love of Christ and through service to his Gospel. Heaven starts now, not after we die. This is the lesson we can integrate into our daily lives by reflecting on our notion of what the next life is like. In so doing, you and I need to remember that all of our notions of heaven are horribly flawed and inadequate due to our limited human understanding. As wonderful as we can imagine things, God s imagination far surpasses ours. Perhaps the most accurate conclusion is the one offered by St. Paul: Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love him. (1 Cor. 2:9) Happy Easter! If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the Parish Office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com.
