1 JUNE 17, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME A Blessing for Fathers We bless you and we praise you, God of our fathers! You are the God of Adam, father of the human family. You are the God of Abraham, our father in faith who was ready and willing to give up everything to be faithful to you. You are the God of Isaac, who was born of laughter and old age, and the God of Jacob, whose clever trick gained an inheritance for twelve tribes of sons and daughters. You are the God of Jesse, from whose loins a nation sprang, a sturdy family tree of monarchs, prophets and priests. You are the God and Father of Israel, your child whom you love with all your heart. You are the God of Zechariah, who fathered the Baptist and taught him the Torah, and of Joachim, the grandfather of Jesus. You are the God of Joseph, who loved and raised Jesus as his own. You are the God and Father of Jesus, and our Father in heaven, too: Holy is your Name! We thank you, God, for the gift of our fathers, for grandfathers and godfathers and fathers-in-law, too. Send your Holy Spirit upon our fathers, in whose laps we were cradled, on whose knees we were bounced, by whose hands we were fed, instructed, at times corrected, in whose company we learned to work and play and pray, at whose side we hear your word and celebrate your mysteries. Heal their pains and disappointments. Forgive all that needs to be forgiven. Give to them the good that they have given others. Welcome into your arms those who have died. Fill this world, O God, with a father s love! We ask this your Son Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray to you as Abba. He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, who is Father of the poor, Copyright 2002 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications, 1800 North Hermitage Avenue, Chicago IL ; ; Text by David Philippart. 4 Schedule of Liturgies June Monday, June 18, Daily Mass Tuesday, June 19, Communion Service Wednesday, June 20, Communion Service Thursday, June 21, Communion Service The Master Storyteller Friday, June 22, Daily Mass 8:00 AM Big Church In today s Gospel, Jesus is presented to us as the master storyteller. He loved to use parables as a tool for comparing one thing to something else. In most of his parables, Jesus revealed who God is by comparing God s essence or actions with something familiar to his listeners. In the parable of the mustard seed, Jesus proclaims a marvelous and irrefutable truth. His small band of disciples, as insignificant as they may have felt, would one day produce a mighty kingdom whose growth was initiated by God. The seeds of this kingdom were planted by God and it is God who will harvest the fruit brought forth from those seeds. The extent of the growth of God s kingdom cannot be predicted. We must trust the work of the Master s hand as we, the mustard plant, grow and grow. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Featured CD for Summer Who Am I to Judge: Responding to Relativism with Logic and Love by Edward Sri Discussing moral issues with family and friends can be a challenge in a culture that strongly promotes the idea that there is no objective truth. Speaking from a wealth of personal experience, renowned author and theologian Dr. Edward Sri provides 5 keys to enable Christians to oppose with logic and love what Pope Benedict XVI called the dictatorship of relativism. He also clarifies the proper understanding of what it means to judge, and the importance of making good judgments. Feature CDs can be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material.

5 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer Happy Father's Day to all the Dads who have given us life and to all the men in our lives who have taught us how to live! Here is some humor to lighten your celebration of Dads. First, here s one of my favorite Mark Twain quotes: When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. The late New York Governor Mario Cuomo wrote: I talk and talk and talk, and I haven't taught people in 50 years what my father taught by example in one week. And for the grandfathers out there: A little girl was sitting on her grandfather's lap as he read her a bedtime story. From time to time, she would take her eyes off the book and reach up to touch his wrinkled cheek. She was alternately stroking her own cheek, then his again. Finally she spoke up, Grandpa, did God make you? Yes, sweetheart, he answered, God made me a long time ago. Oh, she paused. Grandpa, did God make me too? Yes, indeed, honey, he said. God made you just a little while ago. Feeling their respective faces again, she observed, God s getting better at it, isn't he? Dedication of Memorial to Fr. Ron Lewinski Next Saturday, June 23rd After the 5:00 PM Mass Please join us at the 5:00 PM Mass next Saturday, June 23rd, as we remember Fr. Ron Lewinski and dedicate a memorial to him on the hillside overlooking the church. We will be joined by Bishop Rassas and members of Fr. Ron s family. It was from a bench at this location, with its grand vista of our campus, that Fr. Ron monitored the progress of construction of our new church and spent time in prayer and reflection. A memorial plaque and bench will be placed on the newly paved and landscaped area. Also placed there is the cross that was carried for the blessing of the building site. A photograph of the procession with this cross may be seen on the wall of the meeting rooms hallway. From Rev. Morgan Murray: Whenever your kids are out of control, you can take comfort from the thought that even God s omnipotence didn t extend to God s kids. After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve. And the first thing he said was: Don t. Don t what? Adam replied Don t eat the forbidden fruit. God said. Forbidden fruit? We got forbidden fruit? Hey Eve! We got forbidden fruit! No way! Yes way! DON T EAT THAT FRUIT! said God. Why? Because I am your Father and I said so! said God, wondering why he hadn t stopped after making elephants. A few minutes later God saw his kids having an apple break and was angry. Didn t I tell you not to the fruit? the First Parent asked. Uh huh, Adam replied. Then why did you? I dunno, Eve answered. She started it! Adam said. Did not! Did too! Did NOT! Having had it with the two of them, God s punishment was that Adam and Eve should have children of their own. Thus, the pattern was set and it has never been changed. The Classics at Country Fest Are you a classic car enthusiast? Do you have a passion for antique tractors? If so, St. Mary s is the place to be on Sunday, August 5 th. Just like last year, Country Fest 2018 will feature a display of vintage vehicles. Last year we had many classic cars and trucks, more than a dozen antique tractors, and two vintage fire trucks including Mundelein s very own Old Number 1. This year we hope to have an even larger variety of beautiful vintage cars, trucks, tractors and more! And if you happen to own a classic vehicle, here s your chance to show it off. Any classic or collector vehicle is welcome; cars, trucks, tractors motor cycles, even boats. If you have a classic vehicle and would like to display it at Country Fest, please contact John Gannon at jfgannon74@gmail.com or Chuck Stoffel at chuckstoffel@yahoo.com. So, start your engines and mark your calendars for Sunday, August 5 th, and remember to continue to watch the bulletin, the parish website and Facebook page for more exciting Country Fest News! Thanks to all our Dads, those here and those who have returned to their Heavenly Father. We are grateful for your sacrifices, love and example. May you enjoy the blessings and peace you so richly deserve! If you wish to contact me, please send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com.

6 Living God's Word God of all life, we thank you for the many ways life continues to flourish in our world and in our land. Bless the life you have entrusted to our care. It must be very difficult at times for parents, only being able to watch, hope, and pray as their children start to move away from home and begin to make their own way into the world. Will they be safe, make the right choices, be happy? Making use of images from nature, scripture reminds us that God gives the growth, whether it is to mighty cedars springing from small shoots, ripened grain sprouting from the blade, or a fully grown mustard plant emerging from the tiniest of seeds to offer its large branches as housing for the birds. Such poetic language calls us to reflect on the mystery of the kingdom of God, whose seeds were found in the various covenants extended to Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David, and then fully enfleshed in Jesus so many millennia ago. This kingdom continues to sprout in our day, often where least expected. Sometimes it breaks through like a mighty cedar, but more often it is a quieter blossoming, suddenly emerging like stalks of grain, or the first signs of life carried in a mother's body. I am sure God has worried for all the children of every age who have filled the earth. The kingdom of life won by Christ continues to have the power to carry all God's sons and daughters into the loving arms of the God Jesus taught us to call Father. --James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. 10 Based Upon Reflections of Saint John Paul II Second in a series of articles from USCCB: Defending the Lives of the Elderly A Reflection from Saint John Paul II's Apostolic Exhortation Ecclesia in America (The Church in America) Concern must be shown for the elderly, who are often neglected and left to fend for themselves. They must be respected as persons; it is important to care for them and to help them in ways which will promote their rights and ensure their greatest possible physical and spiritual well-being. [They] must be protected from situations or pressures which could drive them to suicide;... they must be helped nowadays to resist the temptation of assisted suicide and euthanasia. Prayer Heavenly Father, You willed that families would be created as the schools of love where generations would learn to cherish and protect each other. Give us the words to speak and the actions to take that we might witness to your tender love for the elderly of our families and strive always to serve their needs and defend their lives. We ask this though Christ our Lord. Amen. Reprinted (excerpted) from Respect Life Program, copyright All rights reserved. PROMOTING JUSTICE AND SOLIDARITY THROUGH ADVOCACY Our understanding of justice is integral to the Church s teachings on solidarity. Justice incorporates our rights as well as our responsibilities. Solidarity, or our persevering commitment to be responsible for the well-being of our neighbors, is therefore an important precondition of our work. Solidarity involves individuals and communities, and is an ethical imperative in Catholic social teaching, or CST. Genuine solidarity requires us to remove barriers and create an environment in which relationships can flourish. Our relationships with our brothers and sisters, particularly those who are poor and marginalized, are mediated through a variety of interconnected structures and systems. CST calls us to assume responsibility with others by shaping a more just and compassionate social order. The principles of CST provide a vision for what a just world could look like. To achieve justice and solidarity, we must strive to uphold systems that promote justice and peace and likewise change systems and practices that do not respect the rights of everyone. We must encourage full participation in economic, social and political life.
