1 OCTOBER 15, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Living God s Word Over the past few weeks the scriptures have provided us with a feast of images of God s abundant mercy. Today s image of the heavenly banquet both completes the picture of God s generosity and shifts our attention to our response to God s generous invitation. Copyright 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Reflecting on God s Word As Catholics we are invited to come to the feast at significant moments in our lives. Baptisms, First Communions, marriages, ordinations, and funeral rites are all commonly celebrated within the feast of the Eucharist. The clothes we wear from the baptismal garment to the funeral pall, from fancy wedding garb to simple white albs reflect our baptismal commitment to be faithful to Christ until we come to the eternal heavenly feast that our eucharistic celebrations anticipate. All are invited to come to the feast. All are invited to dress in the garment of Christ. Not all respond to the invitation. It has often been asked what would happen if, some Sunday morning, praying as we always do for Christ to come again, Christ actually did return. Would we come to his feast? Would we prefer our small private gathering to the huge mass of people we don t really want to know? Would we be found wearing the garment of faithfulness we were given in baptism? Where would we be on that day? Virginia Stillwell Copyright 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. 3 from J W acob s ell Dear Friends in the Lord, Last week I received a letter from Bishop George Rassas confirming the decision for our Renew My Church parish grouping to enter into the next wave of planning that will be launched in the first half of The priests of the parishes in our groupings will have our first meeting in a couple of weeks. Our grouping includes: St. Francis de Sales, Transfiguration, Santa Maria del Popolo, Frassati Catholic Academy and St. Mary of the Annunciation. I believe this is a good time for us to begin this process as we face the challenges of our times. The Cardinal recently spoke of what he has termed the three Archdiocesan imperatives that Pope Francis articulated in the Joy of the Gospel: Called by Jesus Christ, we are making disciples, building communities, and inspiring witness. I share with you an excerpt that the Cardinal shared with the priests of the Archdiocese last week: As we continue to implement Renew My Church in the Archdiocese, our understanding of our renewal process has grown. Like St. Francis who was called by Jesus Christ to rebuild His Church, Renew My Church is the Archdiocese of Chicago s response to Jesus Christ s call and our invitation for renewal. So what is Renew My Church? Called by Jesus Christ, we are making disciples, building communities and inspiring witness. Renew My Church fosters belonging, particularly among young people, and invites them to have a true, intentional encounter and relationship with Jesus Christ. Renew My Church supports vibrant parishes and schools that are life giving and sustain and form existing and new members. Renew My Church asks us to come together in solidarity and bring the light and hope of Jesus Christ to a world in need. Renew My Church is being carried out through Archdiocesan strategic initiatives focused on evangelizing and forming new and existing Catholics in the faith; increasing vocations; improving leadership development and support; increasing parish and Catholic school mission vitality; and building solidarity. Today, we face a crisis of faith. Fewer people than ever are connected with organized religion. Those who identify as Catholic do not attend weekly Mass. Overall, we see an increase in signs of a broken world. As a result of this crisis we face challenges, including thinly resourced parish communities, a struggle to reach young people, low parishioner counts, low priest availability and financial/capital instability. However, we are a strong and committed Church that will work together to overcome the challenges we face today and in the centuries to come. We ask you all to echo these words, and when asked by others what Renew My Church is, we hope you feel compelled to answer: Called by Jesus Christ, we are making disciples, building communities, and inspiring witness. Let us continue to pray for the movement of the Spirit and for the important work of Renew My Church: A Prayer For Renew My Church Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly to listen to each other attentively to imagine our future boldly to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. - Fr. Jerry Appreciation for the 16 th Annual Ladies Tea Thank you to each of the wonderful women who made our tea a beautiful morning for all. We enjoyed all of your baking and cooking talents as we shared great conversation and fellowship. We were thankful to all who transformed our Narthex into an elegant tea room. Our speaker, Linda Couri, reminded us all that we do not need to be perfect Wonder Women to bring our true abilities and talents to this world. Each of us can do our part so all of us will benefit. With the proceeds of our event, we were able to donate $447 to the Fremont Township Food Pantry to continue to help those who lost everything in the July, 2017 flooding. Thank you once again to all who planned, set up tables and chairs, cleaned up, washed dishes, played music, sang, poured hot water and arranged platters. It would not have been possible without all of you. We are blessed to have very generous friends who support this event and all answered the call. Gratefully, Kathleen Arata Ladies Tea Chairperson

Featured CD for October The Jesus Question by Matthew Kelly Jesus was walking along the road one day with his disciples when he asked them two questions. The first question: "Who do people say that I am?" The second question: "Who do you say that I am?" Matthew Kelly calls this second question THE JESUS QUESTION. How you answer this question will affect every aspect of your life. In this presentation, beloved Catholic author and speaker Matthew Kelly encourages listeners to rediscover the real Jesus by presenting a life-changing habit that will help us all answer THE JESUS QUESTION. Feature CDs can be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material.

5 Deacon Deliberations by Deacon Gary Kupsak If you ask most people, they ll tell you it is easy for them to thank God when things are going well, but it s not so easy to praise God when life throws you curveball after curveball. I m being honest when I admit that it s much harder for me to thank and praise the Almighty when I have suffered loss, been ill or anxiously await the other shoe to drop. And then it did. The news poured in about the senseless shooting and killing of so many people at the Country Musical Festival in Las Vegas on October 1, How could the victims of that evil act and their families consider thanking God, how can we consider thanking God when that doctor s diagnosis isn t good, when a pink slip is waiting for us one Monday morning at our place of employment, when it seems life has just gotten so much more difficult. In my life there have been, as I m sure in your lives there have been, travails that disrupt our lives and turn upside down the meaning of life is going well. During those times I ve leaned on Sacred Scripture to help me understand what the Word of God is relative to situations in life that seem rather intolerable. Specifically, in the case of being thankful to God in times of trial, I chose words of the Old Testament Prophet Habakkuk. For though the fig tree does not blossom, and no fruit appears on the vine, though the yield of the olive fails and the terraces produce no nourishment, though the flocks disappear from the fold and there is no herd in the stalls. Yet I will rejoice in the Lord and exult in my saving God. God, my Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet swift as those of deer, and enables me to tread on high places (Hab 3:17-19). Habakkuk vows to thank the Lord, even during times of hardship. In fact, he promises not to allow anything to get in the way of praising and rejoicing in the Lord. How can he make that promise? How can he promise ahead of time to rejoice in the Lord when everything around him comes crashing down? When he s facing hardship and suffering loss, what is it that allows him, that allows us, to thank God in the most difficult of times? To me, the simple creature that I am, my Faith is what allows me, to even in the face of trials and tribulations (and sometimes my family, friends and faith community by their words and actions remind me that I do have faith) to thank God for what he has given me. The last several years have been full of hardships. The economic plunge where folks lost jobs, home, lived in homeless shelters and did not have enough to eat. Hurricanes that destroyed so, so much. Mass killings where evil reared its ugly and perverted head, trying to claim supremacy over humankind. But we are a people of faith, and although many do not claim to part of any organized religion, I believe that a vast majority of people believe there is a Supreme Being, and that living by the Golden Rule is what makes all the pieces of humanity fit together. Our Catholic faith tells us, the members of this wonderful faith community, that even though we experience hardships in life, we can always count on God to be there for us. We may not understand why what has happened has happened, but our faith tell us, our faith lets us see that God never changes, that he loves us and ultimately, His will be done. Yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. God, my Lord is my strength; he makes my feet swift like those of the deer; he enables me tread on high places. (Hab 3: 18-19) ALL SAINTS DAY A holy day of obligation Mass Schedule 6:30, 8:00, 9:30 AM and 7:00 PM in the big church ALL SOULS DAY A special Mass commemorating our faithful departed The names of persons who have been buried from St. Mary Parish will be read aloud at the evening Mass 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM in the big church PADS Laundry Volunteers Needed Would you like to help the homeless of Lake County by helping with PADS laundry? We are hoping to resume providing food, shelter and a place to sleep for the homeless of Lake County November 1st. We could use a few more volunteers who would be willing to launder 3 baskets of linens one week each Month from November to April. Please contact Amy Thompson at or send her an at amylthompson@hotmail.com if you'd like to help. "

We intend to offer the Anointing of the Sick during our visit to the Shrine. Cost is $25/person. Please note that this is a 3.5 hour bus trip. Lunch to be provided by a benefactor. To register, please call the Ministry Center at (847) The Heavenly Banquet The mountain of the Lord described in today s first reading is a place where there is no more hunger, no more weeping, and no more division of any kind. We need to pause and ponder these images every now and then, especially given the fact that we live in such a fractured world. The responsorial psalm continues to paint a picture of a place where only goodness and kindness flourish. These readings describe the heavenly banquet, to which God calls each of us through baptism and continues to call us throughout our lives. Let us RSVP to God s invitation and live our lives consistent with gospel values so that one day we will be welcomed to the table of the kingdom. Copyright J. S. 7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer I stumbled upon the following story that an old friend of mine ed a few years ago. I ve shared this before, but it once again provoked much thought for me and I hope it does for you too. A nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside. Your son is here, she said to the old man. She had to repeat the words several times before the patient s eyes opened. Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, he dimly saw the young uniformed Marine standing outside the oxygen tent. He reached out his hand. The Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man s limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement. The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sit beside the bed. All through the night the young Marine sat there in the poorly lighted ward, holding the old man s hand and offering him words of love and strength. Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the Marine move away and rest awhile. He refused. Whenever the nurse came into the ward, the Marine was oblivious of her and of the night noises of the hospital the clanking of the oxygen tank, the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greetings, the cries and moans of the other patients. Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night. Along towards dawn, the old man died. The Marine released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse. While she did what she had to do, he waited. Finally, she returned. She started to offer words of sympathy, but the Marine interrupted her. Who was that man? he asked. The nurse was startled. He was your father, she answered. No, he wasn t, the Marine replied. I never saw him before in my life. St. Mary of the Annunciation Family Prayer of Nonviolence Dear Lord, we know that making peace must start within ourselves and in our family. Help us to be nonviolent and peaceable people. Help us to respect ourselves and others by affirming others and avoiding uncaring criticism, hateful words, physical attacks and self-destructive behavior. Help us to communicate better by sharing feelings honestly, looking for safe ways to express anger, and working at solving problems peacefully. Help us to listen, Lord, especially to those who disagree with us, and to consider others feelings and needs rather than insisting on having our own way. Help us to forgive, to apologize, and to make amends when we have hurt others, and keep us from holding grudges. Help us to respect nature and to treat all living things, including our pets, with respect and care. Let us play creatively, in ways that support our family s values, and avoid entertainment that makes violence look exciting, funny or acceptable. Lord, help us to be courageous, to challenge violence in all its forms whenever we encounter it, whether at home, at school, at work, or in community, and to stand with others who are treated unfairly. Dear Lord, help us eliminate violence, one family at a time, starting with our own. In your Name we pray. Amen. Then why didn t you say something when I took you to him? I knew right away there had been a mistake, but I also knew he needed his son, and his son just wasn t here. When I realized that he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, knowing how much he needed me, I stayed. The next time someone needs you... just be there. Stay. Rather than seeing ourselves as mortal creatures called to eternal life, it would be better to see ourselves as eternal creatures having a temporary mortal experience. May we learn, especially in our all-too-busy age, that we need to make just being there for others our first priority. As always, if you wish to contact me feel free to leave a note at the Parish Office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com.

9 We can respond to Pope Francis Call to Action by following suggested ways to make a difference. This week s tip to Care for our Common Home is: Store food in reusable containers, not plastic wrap or foil, to cut down on your household trash. This kind of waste fills up landfills, litters neighborhoods, and contributes to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch Check out the Archdiocese website: pvmarchchicago.org/creation Crisis Care Program (CCP) What is CCP? CCP provides a variety of services to individuals facing a crisis. A mental health crisis could include overwhelming depression, thoughts of suicide, poor concentration, disturbing thoughts, or feeling out of control. Sometimes people find themselves crying a lot, feeling anxious, or having trouble thinking clearly. When these problems come on suddenly, or take a noticeable turn for the worse, and interfere with a person s ability to deal with everyday life, this can be considered a crisis. Sometimes just talking to a caring professional can make a difference. We can help people understand what s going on, help them explore their options, offer support, and suggest other resources that might provide further assistance. We especially want to help people avoid psychiatric hospitalization or re-hospitalization when possible. Crisis Phone Counseling Crisis Counselors are available 24 hours a day to speak with you by phone. The number is: You do not have to give your name when you call. We can help guide you through difficult times, manage stress, anxiety and depression, and cope with longer-term difficulties.
