SEPTEMBER 10, RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reflecting on God s Word During the first few months of marriage, the honeymoon period, the one we love may seem perfect to us. He or she can do nothing wrong. Soon, though, reality sets in and we start accumulating hurts. We may hurt one another knowingly or unknowingly. It s much the same in a family or a community. Sooner or later our love for one another is tested by sin and human weakness. Will we put up with the other s behavior or confront it? Which choice reflects true love? Today Paul recalls some signs of true love; he reminds us what those who love will not do. The other Scriptures bring out some of the surprising signs of true love. Loving one another just might involve nagging, confronting, fighting, or telling family secrets. It will certainly involve mutual respect and acceptance, along with a healthy dose of prayer for each other. And true love will seek constantly to call forth the best in the ones we love. Living God s Word We might hope for a change of heart from someone we love or a member of our community. But first we must change our own hearts by forgiving and accepting the other in true love. True love begins with recognizing our own faults and softening our hearts toward the ones we love. Copyright 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. 4 Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Tuesday, September 12 The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the Eucharistic chapel for adoration from 8:30 AM until 8:30 PM. The signup book is in the narthex. Annual Catholic Appeal Update We recently received an update on St. Mary s progress with the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal and it is good news! So far 427 parishioners have pledged $179,913, of which $153,100 has already been paid! The Appeal is a critical source of funding for the Archdiocese and the parish. We are very grateful for the terrific response of our generous parishioners, especially since the Annual Catholic Appeal occurred immediately after the pledge period for the To Teach Who Christ Is capital campaign. Indeed, because of the timing of the two efforts the Archdiocese offered affected parishes some one-time relief by reducing our 2017 goal by 50%! All money received that exceeds our (adjusted) parish goal of $38,027 is returned to St. Mary. So, while parishioner pledges are understandably impacted this year by TTWCI, our rebate will still be substantial thanks to the modified goal. This rebate is a very important source of funding for the functioning of our parish and its ministries. St. Mary also directly benefits from Archdiocesan programs for Catholic Schools, Religious Education, Youth Ministry, and Lay Ministry Formation (among others) that are supported by gifts to the Annual Appeal. We thank everyone for your generous pledges and payments to the Appeal. We are very grateful for all those who sacrifice to support the Archdiocese and St. Mary of the Annunciation! Featured CD for September Shedding New Light on the Scriptures and the Church by Dr. John Bergsma Dr. John Bergsma is an Associate Professor of Theology at Franciscan University of Steubenville, and was a Protestant pastor for four years before converting to the Catholic Church. In this enlightening talk, Dr. Bergsma shows how our respect for the traditional canon of Scripture, as well as our understanding of the Catholic Faith, can be greatly enhanced by the Dead Sea Scrolls- the greatest archaeological discovery of all time. Feature CDs can be found at the wooden kiosk in the narthex. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material.

Dear Parishioners, Let us extend a warm welcome to seminarians Danny Orris and Deacon Isaac Coulter as they begin their ministry among us as part of their Mundelein Seminary formation. The parish leadership has discussed how we might continue to create a sense of community and welcome for visitors or people who may be seeking a spiritual home. The Parish Life Commission suggested a variation on the way we begin our Sunday liturgies. At the beginning of Mass the cantor will recite the entrance antiphon and welcome us in the usual way. The cantor will announce the name of the priest who is presiding and the deacon who is assisting at Mass. Then the cantor will announce the opening hymn and invite us to stand and turn to one another in greeting and welcome. This small gesture gives us an opportunity to take note of who is sitting around us and to make us more attentive to those who may be visiting Saint Mary Parish. At the suggestion of the Worship Commission, we will begin this new procedure on a trial basis in the coming weeks. In this fashion we can help ensure that all who come to worship at St. Mary are greeted and made to feel welcome in our community. Let us pray for one another, Fr Jerry from J acob s W ell St. Mary of the Annunciation Altar Server Training (4 th grade and older) You are invited to participate in training to become an Altar Server! Two sessions will be offered; you only need to attend 1 COMPLETE session to receive all the training. You must sign up for the training. Wednesday, October 18th Wednesday, October 25th 6:00-8:00pm 6:00-8:00pm All sessions will be held in the big church. Please sign up by ing the Altar Server Ministry Coordinator, Tom Forster, at teforster@yahoo.com / Altar serving promotes responsibility, accountability, leadership and above all, teamwork. It is also a chance for young people to get to know other Catholic children which helps reinforce moral and ethical values our children need to face the difficult issues in today s society. Altar servers are expected to sign up to serve at least one Weekend Mass each month. Loving and gracious God, We pray to you on behalf of those who suffer the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey. We pray in gratitude for those who have been rescued and we grieve for those who have lost their lives. We pray for all who strive to assist and comfort those who have been forced to flee their homes. Through our compassion and our sharing may we stand with those who are actively engaged in assisting those who are most in need. AMEN Memorial Mass for Fr. Ron Lewinski Thursday, September 14, 7:00 PM St. Theresa Parish 455 N. Benton St., Palatine After his pastorate was completed here at St. Mary Parish, Fr. Ron resided at St. Theresa Parish, where he quickly became as endeared by that community as he was at ours. The parish community of St. Theresa invites us to join them as they celebrate a Memorial Mass in honor of Fr. Ron.

Deacon Deliberations by Deacon Gary Kupsak Dear Friends in Christ: I was recently approached by a parishioner who indicated that of all the Deacon Deliberations that I have presented, he best liked a fall piece done soon after my ordination. He said he had lost his copy of the Sunday Bulletin that it was in, and asked me to send him another. Allan, here it is! I beg the forgiveness of the rest of you for presenting something that was once presented. Although after reflecting on it for the second time in many years, I think it still makes sense in today s sometimes chaotic society. You are cordially invited to join us for the 16 th Annual Ladies Tea Tuesday, September 26, :15 am How Do You Grow Really Good Corn I don t know how many of you like sweet corn, but I happen to be one individual who can t wait for the summer crop to hit the roadside vegetable stands and supermarkets and becomes a little anxious at the thought of the harvest season coming to an end. As unlikely as the growing of corn may be on improving our God given lives, I do believe there is a life lesson to be gleaned from growing those delicious yellow and white pillows of indescribable flavor. Every time I take a bite out of those delicious kernels, I muse that God, who has created all that is good, had to be present when the Iroquois Indians gave the first sweet corn (called Papoon) to European settlers in To amplify my thoughts on the life s lesson that may be gleaned through the growing of corn, I present the Parable of Growing Good Corn. There was a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he entered his delicious corn in the state fair where he won many blue ribbons. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are growing corn in competition with yours each year the reporter asked? Why sir, said the farmer, Didn t you know that the wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn. The farmer was well aware of the connectedness of life. His corn couldn t improve unless his neighbor s corn also improved. So it is in other aspects of life. Those who chose to be at peace must help their neighbors be at peace. Those who live well must help others to live well, for the real value in life is measured by the lives one positively touches. Those who choose to be happy must help others to find happiness, for the welfare of each of us is bound up with the welfare of all of us. The lesson for us in this: If we are to grow good corn, we must also help our neighbors grow good corn. Friends in Christ, what will you do today, not tomorrow, next week or next month, but today to help your neighbor grow good corn, live in peace, or to be happier? It s up to you, if you want good corn (a good and blessed life) you have to insure that those around you grow good corn. Please pray that our Heavenly Father blesses all that we do, and that through our good works and service to others we are able to Grow good corn! Join Linda Couri, Director of the Institute for Lay Formation at the University of St. Mary of the Lake, to hear: Are you Wonder Woman?... I m Not and I think God s OK with That! Tuesdays & Fridays with occasional Wednesdays. Approximately 6 hr. work day, typically 10 AM to 4 PM, but time is somewhat flexible. Please call Sandra, Business Manager for St. Gilbert at God s Watchers In the ancient world watchmen were extremely important people. They kept communities safe, and were there to alert them to any impending danger or attack. Before locks, alarms, and security systems, watchmen were the protectors, the safety measure. So when the Lord charges Ezekiel as a watchman today, it is a weighty charge. So weighty, we learn, that if Ezekiel fails to sound the alarm for those around him and they perish in a state of wickedness, Ezekiel will be held responsible! This profound connection between God s will on earth and in heaven is repeated in today s Gospel, where Jesus instructs us that we are to be the security force, the watchers placed on alert that nowhere in the Body of Christ, the church, will there be any two members of the one Body who are not reconciled. Scripture tells us that Jesus reconciled all things in heaven and on earth through the blood of his cross. But we are given the mission to continue that reconciliation on earth as in heaven through our ceaseless efforts to be, as Paul would write, ambassadors of reconciliation. Let us not get too comfortable thinking that we are responsible only for keeping our own lives from the path of wickedness and disagreement. We are also held accountable for the lives of the members of Christ s body around us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer Noted Catholic author and Scripture scholar Alice Camille writes, To be honest, I don t like today s readings. I find them troubling... I m in the truth-telling business, yet I harden my heart against this message. Scripture is not wishy-washy, and these passages are clear-cut diamonds, and just as sharp. Jesus lays out the invitation no, the obligation! to confront each other with wrongdoing in the spirit of benevolent correction. Most of us prefer to decline, because it s an icky business. Actually, I think most of us don t mind issuing corrections to others. We just don t like doing it benevolently or directly. We much prefer ambushing someone or, better yet, talking about them behind their back. These things are far easier and don t expose us to much risk. Yet, gossip is one of the most destructive and corrosive elements in nature. Pope Francis frequently talks about the malignancy of gossip: Gossip can also kill, because it kills the reputation of the person! It is so terrible to gossip! At first it may seem like a nice thing, even amusing, like enjoying a candy. But in the end, it fills the heart with bitterness, and even poisons us. Alice Camille points out that providing correction requires that we know what is actually the correct thing before we advise others that they aren t doing it. Too often we jump off without all the facts or we try to impose a personal preference rather than an absolute right way. Frequently we simply pass judgment on others based on externals. We are quick to compare ourselves to other people and find ways in which we can be satisfied that we are better and holier than they are...and then point out that fact. But we need to be aware of the plank in our own eye before we attempt to address the splinter in someone else s. Thomas Merton, a famous Catholic monk and author, once observed that Truly the great problem is the salvation of those who, being good, think they have no further need to be saved and imagine their task is to make others good like themselves! Next, we need to be benevolent. Camille writes, Too often we come out swinging the sledgehammer of righteous indignation instead. The stories of parents screaming moral instruction at their children or spouses hurtling accusations at each other are legion. Even if we whisper the need to reconsider a course of action, we must check that we re not smiling inwardly, enjoying the superior position too much. Self-righteousness is the killer of every good intention. It bears repeating: Self-righteous smugness befouls the moral high ground and makes it stink. To be sure our intentions are pure, we might ask: Do I feel motivated by love or by anger or disgust? Am I calm or roused to do battle? Do I aim to help or to bludgeon? If our intention is anything but love, we re not prepared to engage the spirit of correction. But there s another dimension to today s Scripture readings, probably the dimension we overlook because it makes us even more uncomfortable than giving correction. It s being on the receiving end of correction. None of us likes to be critiqued or criticized. We usually respond with defense or denial. While some correction may be poorly delivered or significantly off-target, there is often a kernel of truth in what we are being told. And it may be more than just a kernel. We need to sort through the message and recognize where we do indeed need to modify our path and make amends for injuries we ve caused. The heart of the Gospel message is that we need to repent, to change our ways. Thus, you and I need to receive correction and we need to act upon it. Bible Study Coming Soon! Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come by Jeff Cavins and Thomas Smith Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come is an intriguing study that shows how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven. Here you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into every time we celebrate the Mass. Watch for more information soon. Sessions begin October 2017 Prayer for Vocations Father you call each one of us by name and ask us to follow you. Bless your church by raising up dedicated and generous leaders from our families and friends who will serve your people as Sisters, Priests, Brothers, Deacons, and Lay Ministers. Inspire us as we grow to know you, and open our hearts to hear your call. We ask this in Jesus name. Amen. May we eliminate back-stabbing, corrosive gossip from our thoughts, words and actions. Instead, let us give and receive benevolent correction in the loving spirit of Christ himself. One final, different note: Please be as generous as you are able in donating to agencies such as Catholic Charities who are caring for hurricane victims. Our brothers and sisters desperately need our tangible assistance, which make our well-wishes and prayers real. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the Parish Office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com.

HUMAN CONCERNS COMMISSION: Joined to Christ, Witnesses of Hope & Healing This is the first in a series of articles with information from the USCCB: Anointing of the Sick is the sacrament that is received by those who are ill or suffering. By the sacred anointing and the prayer of the priest, the whole Church commends those who are sick to Christ. The sick person receives the Holy Spirit s gifts of strength, faith, peace, and courage, and his or her suffering is united with the suffering of Christ for the building up of the Church (Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC], nos ). Through the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, the Church carries out Jesus mission of compassion and healing for the sick. The one who is ill can also be a minister to others. By uniting their suffering to Christ, those who are sick can be signs of faith and witnesses of Christ s Resurrection to the entire community (Pope John Paul II, Christifideles Laici [The Vocation and the Mission of the Lay Faithful in the Church and in the World], no. 54). A Communal Celebration The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is both a liturgical and a communal celebration. In the family home, hospital, or church, members of the Body of Christ gather for the sacramental rite led by a priest. The Penitential Rite followed by the Liturgy of the Word and sacramental anointing of the sick can inspire and comfort both those who are ill and their family and friends who are gathered (CCC, nos ). Many parishes have communal celebrations at which many persons receive the sacrament. These sacramental celebrations are a source of strength amid pain and weakness, hope amid despair and a joyful encounter for the entire community (Christifideles Laici, no. 54). Connection to the Communion of Saints Anointing with sacred oil is a sign of blessing by the Holy Spirit of the one who is sick. Oil of the Sick, which receives a different blessing from the Chrism oil used during Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders, recalls the community s sharing of the Holy Spirit and the sick person s connection to the entire Body of Christ and Communion of Saints. Imitation of Christ s Compassion In the Gospels, Christ s great compassion toward the sick is expressed in the miraculous healings he performs, which heal the entire person, both body and soul. Parables such as the Good Samaritan (Lk 10:29-37) and the Judgment of the Nations (Mt 25:31-46) urge Christ s followers to share his ministry of compassion and healing and to imitate his preferential love for the sick and all who suffer (CCC, nos. 1503, 1506; Pope Benedict XVI, Sacramentum Caritatis [Sacrament of Charity], no. 22). We will offer the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017 at the 11:30am mass The mission of the Human Concerns Commission is to promote the word and manifest the love of Jesus Christ by helping those who are in need, following the principle that whatever you do to the least of my people, you do unto me. JOURNEY INTO JOY An ongoing series in the manner of St. Ignatius of Loyola...so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete In all the days of our lives is Christ, present and active. In the trivial, tremendous, inconsequential, significant, tragic, exciting, ordinary and extraordinary moments of our lives there is a joy that inclines us, incites us, invites us, draws us on. Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness, and loneliness. With Christ joy is constantly born anew (Pope Francis). Christ is constantly inviting us to respond to his presence, to the power of his transforming love. Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest learn from me and you wil find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light (Matthew 11:29). With great confidence we can come to experience a direct, personal relationship with Christ in a manner beyond all our thoughts and imaginings. Learn to experience a deeply felt personal sense of Christ s presence and unconditional love in your life. He desires passionately to give this experience to all who seek it. Current Offering Deacon Auld will offer Meeting Christ in Prayer, a 10-week program of one-hour group meetings with materials for daily prayer and reflection. The program begins on September 10. Sessions take place at Santa Maria del Popolo Parish in the Parish Center meeting room after the 7:30 Sunday Mass, and in room 110 beneath the church after the 10:30 Sunday Mass. The program is not at all complex, but consists of fairly simple and straightforward ways of praying, reflecting and thinking about things. It is not for some group of spiritually elite persons, but is for each and every one of us! Previous groups have come to experience the joy of the nearness and graciousness of Christ in their daily lives.
