1 FEBRUARY 5, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The Best Kept Secret of the Church: Catholic Social Teaching Pope Francis has brought renewed emphasis to the concept of Biblical justice and the principles of Catholic Social Teaching derived from it. He has challenged us to be a church that protects and creates policies for the common good:, one that reaches out to the fringes of society. But how can we most effectively be that Church if we don t have a full understanding of, and appreciation for, Catholic Social Teaching? In this workshop we will explore the Biblical roots of social justice, the development of Catholic social principles, and a variety of ways in which we can become involved in alleviating the suffering of our most vulnerable brothers and sisters. Intended audience: Parish Peace & Justice Committees, Human Concerns ministers, and anyone interested in social justice issues. Date: Saturday, February 25, 2017 Time: 9:00am 12:00 noon Place: St. Mary of the Annunciation, W. Erhart Rd., Mundelein The workshop will take place in the big church and is handicapped accessible. 5 Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner each year. This article, printed with permission from Loveisrespect.org, is part of a four-part series that will be featured in the bulletin during the month of February, Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. Please keep all young adults in your prayers. Contact Diane Mulroe if you would like more information about the Domestic Violence Ministry at St. Mary of the Annunciation. Parents Help Your Child Knowing that your son or daughter is in an unhealthy relationship can be both frustrating and frightening. But as a parent, you re critical in helping your child develop healthy relationships and can provide lifesaving support if they re in an abusive relationship. What Do I Need to Know? You can look for some early warning signs of abuse that can help you identify if your child is in an abusive relationship before it s too late. Some of these signs include: Your child s boyfriend/girlfriend is extremely jealous or possessive. You notice unexplained marks or bruises. Your child s boyfriend/girlfriend s or texts excessively. You notice that your son or daughter is depressed or anxious. Your son or daughter stops participating in extracurricular activities or other interests. Your child stops spending time with other friends and family. Your child s boyfriend/girlfriend abuses other people or animals. Your child begins to dress differently. What Can I Do? Tell your child you re concerned for their safety. Point out that what s happening isn t normal. Everyone deserves a safe and healthy relationship. Offer to connect your son or daughter with a professional, like a counselor or attorney, who they can talk to confidentially. Be supportive and understanding. Stress that you re on their side. Provide information and non-judgmental support. Let your son or daughter know that it s not their fault and no one deserves to be abused. Make it clear that you don t blame them and you respect their choices. Believe them and take them seriously. Your child may be reluctant to share their experiences in fear of no one believing what they say. As you validate their feelings and show your support, they can become more comfortable and trust you with more information. Be careful not to minimize your child s situation due to age, inexperience or the length of their relationship. Help develop a safety plan. One of the most dangerous times in an abusive relationship is when the victim decides to leave. Be especially supportive during this time and try to connect your child to support groups or professionals that can help keep them safe. Remember that ultimately your child must be the one who decides to leave the relationship. There are many complex reasons why victims stay in unhealthy relationships. Your support can make a critical difference in helping your son or daughter find their own way to end their unhealthy relationship. But My Child Isn t in an Unhealthy Relationship It s never too early to talk to your child about healthy relationships and dating violence. Starting conversations -- even if you don t think your child is dating -- is one of the most important steps you can take to help prevent dating violence. Here are some sample questions to start the conversation: Are any of your friends dating? What are their relationships like? What would you want in a boyfriend/girlfriend? Have you witnessed unhealthy relationships or dating abuse at school? How does it make you feel? Were you scared? Do you know what you would do if you witnessed or experienced abuse? Has anyone you know posted anything bad about a friend online? What happened afterwards? Would it be weird if someone you were dating texted you all day to ask you what you re doing? Need more tips to get started? Here are some other ways you can prepare to talk to your child about healthy and unhealthy relationships: Do your own research on dating abuse to get the facts before talking to your teen or 20-something. Start with the information and resources on loveisrespect.org. Provide your child with examples of healthy relationships, pointing out unhealthy behavior. Use examples from your own life, television, movies or music. Ask questions and encourage open discussion. Make sure you listen to your son or daughter, giving them a chance to speak. Avoid analyzing, interrupting, lecturing or accusing. Keep it low key. Don t push it if your child is not ready to talk. Try again another time. Be supportive and nonjudgmental so they know they can come to you for help if their relationship becomes unhealthy in the future. Admit to not knowing the answer to a particular question. This response builds trust. Reinforce that dating should be fun! Stress that violence is never acceptable. Discuss the options your child has if they witness dating abuse or experience it themselves. Remind your son or daughter they have the right to say no to anything they re not comfortable with or ready for. They also must respect the rights of others. If your child is in a relationship that feels uncomfortable, awkward or frightening, assure them they can come to you. And remember -- any decisions they make about the relationship should be their own. Everyone deserves a safe and healthy relationship. Remember, love has many definitions, but abuse isn t one of them. If you or someone you know has a question about a relationship, healthy or unhealthy, visit loveisrespect.org or text loveis to Peer advocates are also available 24/7 at

6 A Few Words from the Director of Parish Operations Dear St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish Family: Having reached the halfway point of our fiscal year, we wish to share the mid-year picture of our parish finances as of December 31, St. Mary s current financial situation is a combination of several pieces of great news and a few elements of some not-so-good news. Briefly stated, the responses to the capital campaign and Annual Catholic Appeal were very generous while our everyday finances are hurting a bit. Our mid-year operating results unfortunately show a deficit of $10,789 while last year we reported net income of $102,780 as our income declined while expenses increased. Of particular concern is that our offertory collections, which are the source of 85% of parish income, are down from last year (which in turn was below the year before that). The Christmas collection was also less than last year. Other sources of donations are less than year-ago levels. At the same time, our maintenance, payroll and benefits expenses have gone up. The Extraordinary portion of our financial picture was helped by wonderful results in the Annual Catholic Appeal. So far, St. Mary has received $113,030 in funds rebated to the parish that were received above our goal. Year-to-date capital spending for was comparable to last year. In both years, capital expenses were mostly due to repaving hazardous, badly deteriorated sections of the school parking lot and patching in the main lot. The extremely generous response of our parishioners to the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign has been truly amazing and we are exceedingly grateful. As of December 31st, $2,590,311 has been pledged, which is 110% of our goal! And more pledges continue to arrive. Pledge payments, combined with Archdiocesan matching, will enable us to retire our $4.8 million construction debt. Once the debt is eliminated, we will then address the complete repaving of our parking lots and rehabbing the basement of the Little Church for use by PADS and other parish ministries. When reviewing the report please keep in mind that the mid-year results cannot simply be multiplied by two in order to project the full-year numbers. In part this is because our ordinary income is weighted to the first half of the year while our expenses are weighted to the second half. Thus, the parish usually operates the last six months of the fiscal year at a deficit. The Annual Catholic Appeal rebate will be used to address much of the operating shortfall but we also hope for improvement in Sunday offertory income. Most important of all: Thank you so much for your generosity, sacrifices and efforts to support St. Mary and the work of the Gospel! It is your sharing of time, talent and treasure that enable us to live out our purpose to give glory to God and to build his Kingdom by works of faith and charity. Yours in Christ, Deacon Howard W. Fischer Director of Parish Operations To Teach Who Christ Is Capital Campaign Results through December 31, 2016 Pledges Amount Percent Goal 2,350,000 Pledges 2,590, % Pledges Made 441 Payments Received 528,179 20% Balance Remaining 2,062,132 Campaign Allocations 1 Target To-Date Target% Archdiocesan Education and Formation 642, ,272 33% St. Mary Construction Debt 2 1,200, ,907 26% St. Mary Capital Projects 3 508, % Total: 2,350, , Campaign payments are divided 60% to St. Mary and 40% to the Archdiocese until the Archdiocesan Education and Formation target is reached. After that point 100% of the funds come to St. Mary. 2. The Archdiocese will match our debt payment on a 3-to-1 basis. The $1.2 million from St. Mary plus the $3.6 million from the Archdiocese will eliminate our $4.8 million construction debt. 3. St. Mary Capital Projects to be funded by the campaign once the Archdiocesan and Debt Retirement targets have been met are: the repaving of our parking lots; and remodeling the basement of the Little Church for use by PADS and parish groups.

7 ST. MARY OF THE ANNUNCIATION 2017 MID-YEAR FINANCIAL STATEMENT For Fiscal Year July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017 as of 12/31/2016 Mid-Year 2017 ORDINARY Notes for 2017 Mid-Year Financial Statement: 1. Miscellaneous income includes, among other items, donations not received through offertory collections, such as donations received for specific projects, adult formation, teen and adult mission trips, etc. Income from mass stipends, vigil candles, pamphlet sales, bank interest, etc., is also recorded in this account. 2. Payments to the Archdiocese for the Church Building Loan have been halted, although we must still accrue the interest due on our financial statement. Debt repayment has been included in the To Teach Who Christ Is capital campaign. 3. As one of our vital ministries, the parish provides direct financial support for our school along with providing maintenance of the school building and mechanicals. The operations of St. Mary School are administered by the Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Schools and are reported on the financial statement of the Catholic Consortium of Lake County. 4. FY2017 and FY2016 Capital Improvements were to ensure safety by repaving sections of the school parking lot each year plus pothole patching in the church lot. 8 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer We live in volatile and confusing times. In the past few weeks heated debates and animated protests regarding immigrants and refugees have spread across our nation and across our social media circles. For a number of years our bishops have been urging the U.S. government to enact immigration reforms that are fair and effective, and which respect human dignity and support the family. This not simply a question of humanitarianism or politics; it is a demand of exercising our faith and values as followers of Jesus Christ. As our bishops have pointed out, our Christian faith teaches us to uphold the dignity of every person regardless of race, creed or nationality, and to act in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world, especially the poor. A fundamental biblical value is the imperative to welcome and care for the stranger. (For one of many scriptural examples, see Leviticus 19:33-34.) As an expression of Catholic social teaching, we must care for displaced people, refugees, migrants and victims of human trafficking worldwide. We must confront the suffering and exploitation of migrants and families separated across borders, often for years. In parallel, we need to work to create economic opportunities so that people are not forced to migrate. I suggest that we would do well to remember to Final Judgment scene in Matthew s gospel where God separates the sheep from the goats. In this scene the goats are condemned not because of actions they have taken but because of their lack of action and indifference. Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me. Then they will answer and say, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs? He will answer them, Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me. And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life. (Matthew 25:41-46) It is thus that Pope Francis has observed, It s hypocrisy to call yourself a Christian and chase away a refugee or someone seeking help, someone who is hungry or thirsty, toss out someone who is in need of my help. If I say I am Christian, but do these things, I'm a hypocrite. I must admit that I too often am more of a goat than a sheep. Faced with the challenges of the present time, all of us should reexamine our personal positions in light of the Gospel and the guidance of the Church. How can we grow? In what ways do we need to change? We should take the time to dig deeper than the overemotional (and often distorted) sound bites that appear in fake news and social media. To find out more about immigration, refugees and the Church s teaching, please visit these websites created by our bishops: and We must not allow ourselves to be seduced by the hatred and fear-mongering that would subject others to indifference or cruel treatment in the name of securing our protection. We should recall the words of Pope St. John Paul II spoken in sight of the Statue of Liberty: Is present-day America becoming less sensitive, less caring toward the poor, the weak, the stranger, the needy? It must not! Today, as before, the United States is called to be a hospitable society, a welcoming culture. As disciples of the Lord we must be the salt of the earth and light for the world. It s risky and controversial and counter-cultural to follow the Gospel but that s what you and I are called to do, for the Kingdom we belong to is not of this world. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the parish office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com. GIVING When you give, see that you give that which multiplies in giving. Raymond Lull POPULARITY Avoid popularity if you would have peace. Abraham Lincoln REMINDER: Apologetics Tomorrow Apologetics 101: Introduction to Defending the Faith Monday, February 6, 7 9 PM Parish Center Meeting Rooms Deacon Jeffrey Moor will run through some basic principles of how to answer others questions about Catholicism and to talk to others in a way that will allow you to remain friends after the conversation! St. Mary of the Annunciation Ministry of Care The community of St. Mary is blessed with many wonderful Ministers of Care (MOC). Some of them serve as MOC who visit parishioners who are in the hospital at Advocate Condell. We also have MOC who visit with parishioners who are homebound and cannot get to mass. 10 DISCOVER THE RICHES OF THE MASS A Biblical Walk Through the Mass by Dr. Edward Sri Do you understand the meaning behind the parts of the Mass? We know the gestures and responses well, but would you like a richer, more fruitful worship experience? In his five week video based study, A Biblical Walk Through the Mass, Dr. Edward Sri explores the roots of the words and gestures we experience at Mass, and explains their profound significance. In this study you will come to know and understand the Mass like never before. It is a wonderful opportunity to find a renewed excitement for our Catholic liturgy as we head into Lent and the Easter season! Each session includes lively group discussion followed by a video presentation to help unlock the lesson each week. Sessions will be offered 3 times per week so that participants can choose the time that best fits their schedule. Cost to register is $19.95 per person and includes materials for all 5 sessions. Register online at or return this form with payment to parish office or collection basket. Payment can be made by credit card or check payable to St. Mary. Participants are welcome to attend any session but please indicate your preferred time for planning purposes. Session Dates All sessions will begin in the Meeting Rooms at the St. Mary Parish Center.
