1 JUNE 21, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Living God's Word When we find ourselves being brought to a new place in life, we often presume that the new destination will be clear before us and without turmoil. Yet crossing to the other side of anything is always unsettling. In the end faith does not just calm our insides for the duration of the journey. Faith is the strength and wisdom we have knowing that Christ is in our boat. Copyright (c) 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Reflecting on God s Word In today s Gospel, Mark says that the invitation to journey to a new and different shore comes from Jesus. He is the one who suggests, Let us cross to the other side (Mark 4:35). Yet that invitation comes as evening draws on, as so often happens in life. It comes amid the shadows of life where clarity of action is seldom sharp or distinct. Then to step into the boat is indeed an act of faith. Who would ever choose a crossing at such a time? Yet it was as evening drew on that Jesus said to his disciples, Let us cross to the other side. And so they go. It is at this point that they take Jesus into their boat, which is always what is expected of the disciple that the Lord be invited on the journey, and that the journey to the other side be made together. The Jesus story ends in calm and stillness, but that is not its promise. What is assured is that faith can bring one to the other side, which is also the assurance given to Job out of the storm that it is God who made the thick darkness and put limits on the sea, all along knowing its ability to burst forth. It is God who knows creation and is in control, it is Jesus who knows the human journey and accompanies us, and it is faith that sustains us in the midst of storms. Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. 3 A Blessing for Fathers We bless you and we praise you, God of our fathers! You are the God of Adam, father of the human family. You are the God of Abraham, our father in faith who was ready and willing to give up everything to be faithful to you. You are the God of Isaac, who was born of laughter and old age, and the God of Jacob, whose clever trick gained an inheritance for twelve tribes of sons and daughters. You are the God of Jesse, from whose loins a na on sprang, a sturdy family tree of monarchs, prophets and priests. You are the God and Father of Israel, your child whom you love with all your heart. You are the God of Zechariah, who fathered the Bap st and taught him the Torah, and of Joachim, the grandfather of Jesus. You are the God of Joseph, who loved and raised Jesus as his own. You are the God and Father of Jesus, and our Father in heaven, too: Holy is your Name! We thank you, God, for the gi of our fathers, for grandfathers and godfathers and fathers-in-law, too. Send your Holy Spirit upon our fathers, in whose laps we were cradled, on whose knees we were bounced, by whose hands we were fed, instructed, at mes corrected, in whose company we learned to work and play and pray, at whose side we hear your word and celebrate your mysteries. Heal their pains and disappointments. Forgive all that needs to be forgiven. Give to them the good that they have given others. Welcome into your arms those who have died. Fill this world, O God, with a father s love! We ask this your Son Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray to you as Abba. He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, who is Father of the poor, one God forever and ever. Amen. 4 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer Happy Father's Day to all the Dads who have given us life and to all the men in our lives who have taught us how to live! Here is some humor to lighten your celebration of Dads. First, there s one of my favorite Mark Twain quotes: When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. Protestant preacher King Duncan once observed: Children go through four fascinating stages. First they call you Da-Da. Then they call you Daddy. As they mature they call you Dad. Finally, they call you collect. Former New York Governor Mario Cuomo wrote: I talk and talk and talk, and I haven't taught people in 50 years what my father taught by example in one week. From Rev. Morgan Murray: Whenever your kids are out of control, you can take comfort from the thought that even God s omnipotence didn t extend to God s kids. After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve. And the first thing he said was: Don t. Don t what? Adam replied Don t eat the forbidden fruit. God said. Forbidden fruit? We got forbidden fruit? Hey Eve! We got forbidden fruit! No way! Yes way! DON T EAT THAT FRUIT! said God. Why? Because I am your Father and I said so! said God, wondering why he hadn t stopped after making elephants. A few minutes later God saw his kids having an apple break and was angry. Didn t I tell you not to the fruit? the First Parent asked. Uh huh, Adam replied. Then why did you? I dunno, Eve answered. She started it! Adam said. Did not! Did too! Did NOT! Having had it with the two of them, God s punishment was that Adam and Eve should have children of their own. Thus, the pattern was set and it has never been changed. Thanks to all our Dads, those here and those who have returned to their Heavenly Father. We are grateful for your sacrifices, love and example. May you enjoy the blessings and peace you so richly deserve! If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the parish office or send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com. In a homily last week I quoted a beautiful prayer known as Archbishop Romero s Prayer. Afterwards, several folks asked if they could obtain a copy. So, here it is. (Although often attributed to Archbishop Oscar Romero himself, the following prayer poem was actually written by the late Bishop Ken Untener of Saginaw and used by Cardinal Dearden of Detroit in a homily in Because of its affinity to the words of Oscar Romero, it was renamed as Romero s Prayer following his 1980 assassination. Archbishop Romero was beatified last month.) - Deacon Howard Fischer A Step Along the Way: Archbishop Romero s Prayer It helps, now and then, to step back and take a long view. The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is even beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God s work. Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of saying that the Kingdom always lies beyond us. No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession brings perfection. No pastoral visit brings wholeness. No program accomplishes the Church s mission. No set of goals and objectives includes everything. This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabilities. We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do something, and to do it very well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord s grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future not our own. Amen.

5 Teen Mission Trip 2015 PHILADELPHIA Last week I was blessed with the opportunity to travel on mission to Philadelphia with forty-five teens and eight adults from our parish. The teens of our parish had the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Christ to the people of Philadelphia alongside teens from across the country. We were joined by two other parishes from the Chicago area as well as parishes from South Dakota and Tennessee. Throughout the week, our group accomplished various service projects, including painting/refurbishing houses, weeding gardens, building flower beds, and much more. We attended daily mass, heard empowering talks, went to adoration, received the sacrament of confession, and joined our voices in praise and worship. Today s culture continually tells the youth to be more individualistic and self-serving. Last week I witnessed forty-five teens who are striving to be counter-cultural. They are striving to serve others and to share the love of Christ. Many times, people believe we need to travel to foreign countries or raise millions of dollars in order to make a difference in the world. Ultimately, we can make a difference at home, in our daily life. Whether it is at school, at work, or in our home, we simply need to show others the love that Christ has shown to us. I am continually amazed by the generosity and support of this parish. Without your help over the past year, this mission trip would not have been possible. Thank you to all who donated to our Car Wash or Babysitting Night and thank you to all who have continually kept us in your prayers throughout our trip. Your support is greatly appreciated! Know of my continued prayers. In Christ, Benjamin Valle

6 Reminder to order Market Day! Every order counts to support our school no matter how small! Check out the flyer (located in the narthex) or go to If you have any questions, please contact Becky & Dan Casper at or Childcare During Mass St. Mary s Childcare Ministry offers childcare during 9:30 Mass. Childcare takes place in meeting room 3 and is open to children ages 6 months to 4 years. There is no sign-up; it is based on first-come, first-served. If you have questions please contact Kitty White, Childcare Coordinator at kitty.white.kw@gmail.com. Children s Liturgy of the Word St. Mary offers Children s Liturgy of the Word at our 5:00pm Saturday and 9:30am Sunday masses. Children s Liturgy is open to all children ages 4 years to 5 th grade and there is no sign-up necessary. Children are dismissed from mass with their catechists to listen to the readings and discuss what they hear. Our team of catechists is there to share the Scripture readings and help the children better understand what they have heard. This is not a babysitting service and children are expected to behave as if they are in a religion session. We also have teen volunteers who help the leaders should a child need to use the bathroom or be returned to parents in church. Children should leave all toys, dolls, blankets, etc in church with mom and dad. If children misbehave, they could be returned to parents. Please help us make this a positive experience for everyone by talking with your children about proper behavior during Liturgy of the Word and by abiding to the guidelines set by the Liturgy of the Word team. Thank you for your support, The Liturgy of the Word Catechists Summer Lectio Divina Groups As followers of Jesus, we want to understand Scripture in a way that applies to our life today. The Christian practice of lectio divina is a way of approaching the Bible that helps Scripture to come alive. Through reading, reflecting and praying, readers trust that God will speak through Scripture when we are open to its message. As we listen and understand the Word of God and find new ways to apply it to our daily life, we become more effective witnesses to Christ. A richly rewarding way to study the Word of God. Three slightly different groups are offered this summer: Lectio Divina Prayer Group Uses traditional Lectio Divina Prayer - guided meditation on Sunday s readings. Thursday mornings from 8:40 9:45 a.m. Parish Hospitality Suite Lectio Divina Bible Study with Ignatian Spirituality Stronger academic component and use of additional resources. Tuesday evenings from 7:30-8:45 p.m. Parish Meeting Rooms Lectio Divina Scripture Reflection Traditionl Lectio Divina reflection on the Sunday readings. Tuesday mornings from 9:15-10:15 a.m. Parish Meeting Rooms All are welcome! To join a group or for more information call the parish office or jenpepping@gmail.com. CD of the Month All Things Are Possible for God by Fr. Joshua Waltz As a young man, the last thing Fr. Joshua Waltz ever thought he would be was a Catholic priest. But a series of choices some bad and some good ultimately led him to enter the seminary. In this talk, Fr. 10 The Church Prays with Attention It begins when we say that we are lifting our hearts to the Lord. It ends when we say Amen, then prepare to pray the Lord s Prayer together. In between these are maybe four or ive minutes. What happens during this time is the eucharistic prayer. What is it that is to take place after we say we ll lift up our hearts to the Lord? Most of us would answer: The consecration when the presider says This is my body and This is my blood. And that is right, but only part of what happens. Why are we to lift up our hearts and to give God thanks and praise? Why involve all of us? The name of this time in the Mass says it all. This is the eucharistic prayer. Eucharist becomes a name for the consecrated bread and wine only because it irst means something else. It is a Greek word that needs several English words to translate it. It is blessing. It is giving thanks. It is praise. So in the eucharistic prayer, these are the things that the church is to do and more besides. The priest is within the church to pronounce this prayer, to lead this prayer. The whole church is there to enter into the prayer, to acclaim all the blessing, thanks and praise that the priest speaks. What we know from the New Testament about our eucharistic prayer is that Jesus would take bread or take wine and give thanks to God. Now we do it in memory of Jesus. What persons have you loved? When you remember them, don t you give thanks? So the eucharistic prayer is illed with thanks for all God s saving deeds, but especially the passion and death and resurrection of Jesus. In it we name our saints, our pope and our bishop, our dead. All the memories come together when we surround the table and pray that these gifts of bread and wine will become for us the body and the blood of Jesus. If we then call the bread and wine the eucharist it is because we have prayed this eucharist to God over them.
