1 SEPTEMBER 2, ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Living God's Word They say we learn more from example than we do from words. Today we are blessed to be going back to school with the very best of teachers, Jesus, who was the model "doer of the word" (James 1:22). If we want to know how to "do justice," all we need to do is imitate our favorite teacher. Copyright (c) 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Reflecting on God s Word Is someone in your house going back to school? If so there are books and supplies to buy, schedules to plan, transportation to be arranged. There is the worry over new teachers and whether everything that was learned last year has been forgotten. But no matter. Most of the time the school year begins with a review. That s good because sometimes we understand things better the second or third time we learn them. With the scriptures this Sunday all of us are going back to school. The series of selections from the Gospel of Mark and the letter of James that we begin this week will teach us one more time what it means to be a disciple. Lucky for us, since most of us can only learn this lesson if we hear and apply it on a daily basis. Today s first reading also instructs us to hear and observe the commandments of the Lord... that [we] may live (Deuteronomy 4:1, 2). And the psalm reviews the basics: The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord (15:1a). Virginia Stillwell Copyright 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Matthew Earlier this year we had publicized a 6-week series on the Gospel of John at the parish this Fall with Fr. Matthew. Due to Fr. Matt s unexpected reassignment to St. Joseph's College Seminary, we will have to postpone the series for now. The announcement of his appointment caught everyone very much by surprise. Fr. Matthew truly thought he would be here in the Fall to offer this series and is disappointed that we have to cancel for now. He would very much like to share this with us at another time, so we do hope to consider a future date after he makes the transition to his new position. Please note that the St. Mary Bible study committee has selected a study on the Gospel of John to begin the end of January. Be sure to look for information at the parish website and in the bulletin on the new study. For questions please contact the parish office at RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM As summer winds down and kids are heading back to school, St. Mary s Religious Education Program (REP) will also be starting after Labor Day. The faith formation of our children is an ongoing process that begins in kindergarten or first grade and continues until the celebration of confirmation, either as an 8 th grader or perhaps as a high school student. Registration is ongoing and it s important to register your child(ren) so that materials can be ordered and catechists can be secured. Registration forms are available on the parish web site at or in the kiosk in the narthex. If you are new to St. Mary and have not yet registered your family, you can do so by attending our next Welcome Session on Sunday, August 26 at 10:45 or by calling the parish office to make an appointment during the week. Our program is dependent on volunteer catechists who share their love of Christ with the children. If you love working with kids and love sharing your faith, you might find that this ministry is for you. Please contact Sue Matousek at smatous@stmota.org or call me at to further talk about what becoming a catechist entails. Feel free to contact me at the above with any questions or concerns. Good news! Full audio recordings of our weekend homilies can be found on the St. Mary s parish website. This unique feature allows parishioners to re-listen to homilies, gain additional insights, or share the message with a friend or family member. This valuable tool began in July of The Darrell and Susan Harmon family has played a key role in recording the weekly homilies and posting them to our parish website. Teenage daughters Regan and Riley have led this project in recent years. Each weekend, the readings and homily from each Mass are set to record to a laptop. From there, the Harmon family edits the file and sends it to parishioner and website coordinator, Jessica Stoffel, to upload to the parish website. Mr. Harmon stated, I think it is a great way to share homilies/messages with friends and family that may not have had the opportunity to hear a particular homily. I've gone back and re-listened to homilies that spoke to me. How can you access our homilies? Go to our parish website (stmaryfc.org) and select the About Us tab. From there, choose Homily Recordings. You will find recordings archived by date and homilist. The Harmon family will be stepping down from this ministry and new volunteers will soon continue this valuable service. A big thank you to the Harmon family for the gift of your time and talent for the last seven years!

7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer We often have a Jekyll and Hyde relationship with rules and laws. We love rules when they enshrine and promote values we hold dear. We bristle at them when we feel that they impinge on our personal freedom or if they aren t in perfect alignment with our point of view. In matters of faith and religion, laws and rules can take on a whole another dimension. At times we want rules that tell us in blackand-white terms what we are supposed to do in things large and small. Such clarity gives us comfort and satisfaction that we are in proper alignment vis-à-vis God. It also can give us the false illusion that we are in charge of our salvation if we mechanically follow all the rules. We can dilute the Gospel into a focus on piety and rituals. But we run the risk of having the rules and rituals take on a life of their own that is disconnected from the Gospel when we don t see them as tools for ongoing conversion, as a means to living completely with the love of God in all that we do, think and say. Legalism creeps in when we focus on externally conforming to rules & rituals and retreat from the challenge of living with the disposition of love. This was the trap that the Pharisees often fell into. It is a trap that we, and the Church, have fallen into at times, too. We would like to impose strict black-and-white structure to our lives and to our practice of the faith. But, the fact is that this approach is often artificial and distorting as we must really navigate life in the shades of gray. We are called to live by the spirit of God s law, not simply to memorize a rulebook. Externally keeping rules and rituals is no substitute for having hearts and minds and lives that are embedded in God. None of this means that there aren t valid rules. Sadly, much of our culture is afflicted with the opposite extreme to legalism: flagrant relativism, a distorted view which acts as if there are no universal truths, rules or values. Indeed, there are divine truths and laws, but we must adopt the heart and mind of Christ to see and use them correctly. It is precisely in wrestling with these difficulties of our life s journey that we will encounter the wounded and risen Lord. In today s Gospel Jesus challenges us to internalize the love of God so completely that we couldn t possibly consider thinking or acting in another fashion. We are to see God s laws neither as optional nor as an external set of oppressive rules that require our conformity. Rather, they are a necessity to mold our hearts so that we embody the values they express. Thus, you and I need to ask ourselves where we REALLY stand in our relationship with God. Is there some piece of our thoughts, words or actions that we need to excise? Do we simply go through the motions and give superficial attention to our Heavenly Father? Are we observing the necessary rituals and regulations of our religion mostly for the purpose of maintaining good appearances? Do our politics, finances, conversations, social media posts, and lifestyles match the values of the Gospel? Do we hold virulent prejudices, animosity or grudges while at the same time feeling good about ourselves because we go to Mass every Sunday? Or are we in intimate love with Father, Son and Spirit, a relationship which drives every aspect of our lives? Authentic religion is centered in the human heart and soul and not in rulebooks. True faith transcends social conventions and legalisms; it guides every decision and choice we make.
