1 MAY 27, 2018 TRINITY SUNDAY Living God's Word We can pray that we continue to live in the freedom of the children of God, to be led by God's Spirit, to go forth to draw others into this family of God by showing the joy of being disciples. Readings for the Week Copyright (c) 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Monday: 1 Pt 1:3-9; Ps 111:1-2, 5-6, 9-10c; Mk 10:17-27 Tuesday: 1 Pt 1:10-16; Ps 98:1-4; Mk 10:28-31 Wednesday: 1 Pt 1:18-25; Ps 147:12-15, 19-20; Mk 10:32-45 Thursday: Zep 3:14-18a or Rom 12:9-16; Is 12:2-3, 4bcd-6; Lk 1:39-56 Friday: 1 Pt 4:7-13; Ps 96:10-13; Mk 11:11-26 Saturday: Jude 17, 20b-25; Ps 63:2-6; Mk 11:27-33 Sunday: Ex 24:3-8; Ps 116:12-13, 15-18; Heb 9:11-15; Mk 14:12-16, Reflecting on God s Word It is not always easy to be family. Good parents, the old saying goes, give their children roots and wings, a sense of security and freedom to live their lives. But achieving such a balance is often accomplished only after years of working at it. Sometimes children feel smothered by their parents, that they are trying to control their lives; at other times, children feel neglected, that they are not important, even not loved. The readings today remind us that God wishes us to know that we can find our roots in the divine love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and that we can also find our freedom there. Paulʹs words to the Romans pick up first on the purpose of the gift of the Spirit that we celebrated last Sunday. The Spirit has been given us to lead us more deeply into the mystery of God, into the love of God, so that we recognize that we are Godʹs beloved children. This same message is found in Mosesʹ words to the people as they are about to enter into the Promised Land. Has anyone ever had a God like our God? Moses marvels. Has any God ever shown a people how dear they are by such signs and wonders as our God has shown us? Moses is moving them to know who they are as Godʹs beloved family and to ʺfix in your heart, that the LORD is God... and that there is no otherʺ (Deuteronomy 4:39). But we are not to stay all curled up in the divine embrace. We have been sent forth to proclaim to others this good news, to ʺgo, therefore, and make disciples of all nationsʺ (Matthew 28:19). We do this when we allow the Spirit to lead us, to guide us in witnessing to God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. --James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Copyright (c) 2014, World Library Publications. 5 Dedication of Memorial to Fr. Ron Lewinski Saturday, June 23rd After the 5:00 PM Mass We will dedicate a memorial to Fr. Ron Lewinski after Mass on June 23rd. The memorial is on the western edge of our parish cemetery; its retaining wall can be seen from the driveway. It was from this location that Fr. Ron would observe the progress of construction of our new church. A memorial plaque will be placed on the paved area. Also there will be a new bench as well as the cross that was carried for the blessing of the building site. A photograph of the procession with this cross may be seen on the wall of the meeting rooms hallway. Annual Catholic Appeal Update We recently received an update on St. Mary s progress with the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal and the results are improving. We are very grateful for the response and sacrifices of our generous parishioners. For comparison, here are the current Appeal results as compared to last year: Final so far Donors Pledged: $191,258 $183,616 Gifts Recv'd $184,211 $99,169 Fulfill%: 96% 54% If you have not yet made a pledge, you may still do so in the Parish Office or from the Stewardship tab on our web site. All gifts of any amount are very helpful. August 5, 2018 Country Fest continues Long Tradition Did you know that by coming to Country Fest on August 5 th, you will be sharing in a long and storied tradition of social and community building events at St. Mary of the Annunciation dating back more than a century? That s right, from its earliest days, the community of St. Mary s has known to have fun! The earliest recorded social event was the July 4 th picnic held for several years in the 1890's. Later, in 1931, St. Mary held its first Fall Fest and chicken dinner which became an annual tradition that was halted only by food rationing during World War II. This event was popular not just within the parish but in the surrounding community as well as were the plays and dances that the parish held throughout the 1930 s and 40 s. The annual St. Mary Farm Auction began in 1952 and was a muchanticipated occasion for many years, regularly attracting hundreds of people and netting thousands of dollars for the parish. The storied Pork and Corn Roast began in 1974 and grew in size and popularity over the ensuing three decades. It was during the 24 th annual Pork and Corn Roast, in 1998, that Cardinal George rode with Fr. Ron Lewinski in a horse drawn buggy to bless the land on which the new church would rise. Our community celebrated its sesquicentennial anniversary at Harvest Fest in 2014 with a musical play dramatizing several memorable episodes from our parish s first 150 years. Country Fest incorporates many of the most popular aspects of these earlier events, and this year s Country Fest 2.0 promises to be a wonderful day of fun, fellowship and family! So, mark your calendars for Sunday, August 5 th, and watch the bulletin over the coming weeks for more exciting Country Fest news! The Appeal is a major source of funding for the Archdiocese and St. Mary. All money received that exceeds our parish goal of $55,962 will be returned to St. Mary. As in previous years, this rebate is a very important source of funding for the functioning of our parish and its ministries, and it helps us to address critical big ticket items that are outside the scope of our normal budget. Your gift is extremely important for the well-being of St. Mary, so if you have not yet pledged we ask that you please do so! Every gift helps. Our parish also directly benefits from Archdiocesan programs for Catholic Schools, Religious Education, Youth Ministry, and Lay Ministry Formation (among others), all of which are supported by gifts to the Annual Appeal. While St. Mary is currently a little behind our results from the past few years, with your help we can catch up and surpass them! Over the next few months we will periodically update you on our Appeal progress. We thank everyone for your generous pledges and payments to the Annual Catholic Appeal in support of St. Mary and the Archdiocese of Chicago! Summer Choir June 23 To make the Mass preceding the blessing of the memorial to Fr. Lewinski, we are forming a summer choir. Interested persons who have some experience in choir singing are invited to attend the rehearsal and sing at the Mass. Rehearsal: Wednesday, June 20, 7:00 PM Mass: Saturday, June 23, 5:00 PM Please contact Fred Vipond, either at the organ console after Mass, or by , fvipond@stmota.org.

7 F isch ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer St. Augustine, while puzzling over the doctrine of the Trinity, was walking along the beach one day when he observed a young boy with a bucket, running back and forth to pour water into a little hole. Augustine asked, What are you doing? The boy replied, I m trying to put the ocean into this hole. Then Augustine realized that he had been trying to put an infinite God into his finite mind. All sorts of logical devices have been tried to help our feeble minds conceptualize the mystery of the Trinity. (Think of St. Patrick and the three-leaf clover, for example.) Countless volumes of theology have been written over the last 20 centuries on this subject. But try as we might, we will never be able to intellectually grasp a truth that comes from a reality superior to the one we currently inhabit. Yet despite our lack of comprehension, we accept this tenet of our faith simply because Jesus told us of the intimate union of Father, Son, and Spirit. The true measure of faith is to accept and believe even when we do not understand. (To require something to be logical is to make logic superior to God!) Fortunately, the purpose of Trinity Sunday is not to engage in abstract theology, but to stand in awe and praise the God who has revealed himself as Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier. But why should we care about the Trinity? Does it really matter? First and foremost, we need to embrace every truth that our Creator makes known to us. We need to absorb everything we can about the One we love. Second, we should appreciate that intimate love and inseparable community are intrinsic to the nature of God. Therefore, such love and community should be at the heart of who we are too for we have been made in the image and likeness of God. Our culture is so individualistic that we usually place our needs ahead of the community s, whereas the example of the Trinity is that this should be the other way around. Here are some other quotes and analogies on the Trinity. But, of course, in the end we re left with a hole and an ocean... True prayer is the living experience of the Holy Trinity. The Spirit s breathing, the Son s intercession, the Father s will, these three become one in us. Andrew Murray Tell me how it is that in this room there are three candles and but one light, and I will explain to you the mode of the divine existence. John Wesley A pretzel has three holes. The first hole is not the second hole, the second hole is not the third hole, but the same dough ties all three holes together. One pretzel, three holes. There s one God made up of three distinct persons, the Father, the Son, and the Spirit, but they re all tied together by the same essence or the same divine nature. The same attributes, perfections, and descriptions of one belongs to the others. Tony Evans A priest was sitting in a Chicago airport waiting for his plane. A man sat down beside him and began to give his opinions on religion. He boasted: I won t accept anything I can t understand. Take this business of three Gods in one God or whatever it is. I can t buy that. Nobody can explain it to me, so I will not believe it. Pointing to the sun streaming in the window, the priest asked: Do you believe in the sun? Why, of course, the doubter admitted. Alright, the priest continued, the rays you see coming through that window are from the sun, 90 million miles from here. The heat we feel comes from the sun Givin in the Rain What a glorious feeling a big smile on our faces! When the forecast says rain and the 7Hx8.5Wx16L trailer is empty, the mission seems a bit daunting, but as with all we do with you at St. Mary of the Annunciation, success was achieved! The rain was just weather and between the collections on Saturday and Sunday, the trailer was filled! As of this writing, your donations are being processed at the SVdP Libertyville thrift store (1125 S Milwaukee Ave). The merchandise will stock the store and be used to fill free vouchers that we and other Lake County SVdP Conferences write for families and individuals in need. Not too long ago, we wrote a voucher for a vacuum cleaner and the store had one. The client was delighted especially since it was a bagless vacuum and therefore didn t add cost to her budget. Before that we were helping a family relocate to their Waukegan apartment. You never know where your old silverware, dish strainer, rug, comforter and other household basics will be used again. This family received everything through the free voucher program your donations truly help people! Thank you to everyone who stopped by to fill the trailer. Thanks too to our volunteers: Barb, Mary Lou, Jan S, Jan S (too!), Brian, Kathleen, Linda, Sally, Marge, Carol, Mercedes, Tom, Jim, Holly, Vince. And to Karen & Alfredo with SVdP Chicago Council who coordinated the trailer scheduling and delivery/pick up with us. Now seems like the perfect time to shout out another huge thank you to all of you. We were informed recently that the Lenten envelope collection for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Mary collected $3,100. The gift and timing is perfect. We have had some serious client cases lately. Financial resources allow us to do more good, to help more people out of a hardship and hopefully on their way out of poverty. We d like to say thanks too to Frassati Catholic Academy that named the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Mary as one of their Mission Party recipients along with Feed My Starving Children and The Water Project. We have sent our tremendous thanks to Ms. Kleckner, FCA students, and the entire Frassti community. We are blessed to have received $200 to care for the poor and suffering. and from its rays. The Holy Trinity is something like that. The sun is God the Father; the sun sends out its rays, God the Son. Then from both the sun and its rays, from the Father and the Son, proceeds or comes the Holy Spirit, the heat. Can you explain how that happens? The doubter quickly changed the subject. Msgr. Arthur Tonne May the God who is Creator, Savior and Sustainer enfold us in his community of love forever. May we cultivate the love, intimacy and community of the Trinity in our world. If you wish to contact me, please send an to deaconhwf99@yahoo.com.

9 What a parish can do to support Catholics with Mental Illness? 1. Be a friend: Does your parish offers someone who can befriend them; a buddy program? 2. Compassionate Listening and Referral: Clergy and leaders listen with compassion and refer to professional services as needed. Follow up after referral. 3. Prayers of the Faithful: Incorporate prayers for mental illness at prayers of the faithful. 4. Homilies: Include references to persons with mental illnesses in homilies. 5. Hospital Visits: Ministry leaders visit those hospitalized with mental illness. 6. Social Justice Groups: Give the peace and justice ministry the opportunity to get involved in the systemic problems that affect persons with mental illness. At least one half of the prison population suffers with mental illness and at least one third of the homeless population suffers with mental illness. 7. Legislative Advocacy: Faith Communities can write letters and/or advocate directly with their elected officials to bring about justice to these inequities. Mental illness and the legislative process is a Faith Community issue since it deals with justice and compassion for people in need. 8. Church Bulletins: Publicize the issues in the church bulletin or newsletter through a series of short articles on the subject. 9. Healing Prayer Services: Healing prayer and services, e.g. Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, for illnesses should include mental illnesses. 10. Speakers Available for Church Groups: The topic of mental illness should be encouraged as subject matter for one of their meetings. Speakers could be from the medical community, mental health field, or advocacy groups. 11. Host Events: Host speakers, workshops, and educational events for families of persons with a mental illness. 12. Use People First Language: Promote the dignity of the individual. God loves us each as we are. Use people first language e.g., phrases like people with a mental illness rather than the mentally ill. No one wants to be known as a disease. Contact Diane Mulroe or Deacon Al Sedivy for more information on how you can help support those who are affected by mental illness. HUMAN CONCERNS COMMISSION: The mission of the Human Concerns Commission is to promote the word and manifest the love of Jesus Christ by helping those who are in need, following the principle that whatever you do to the least of my people, you do unto me. True or False: Wasting less food is a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. True: More than a third of food produced globally never makes it to the table. Some of this wasted food spoils in transit, while consumers throw some of this food out. During the production, harvesting, transporting, and packaging of the wasted food, more than 3.3 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide is emitted. If you are a relative or friend of a deceased Veteran, The St. Mary Military Ministry invites you to have your loved one prayed for at the Memorial Day Mass May 28th at 9:00am in the little church Prayer for deceased Veterans: O God, by whose mercy the faithful departed find rest, look kindly on your departed veterans who gave their lives in the service of their country. 10 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of the great treasures of the Eastern tradition is the icon of the Holy Trinity created by the Russian iconographer Andrei Rublev in the 1400s. The Trinity is symbolized by the three travelers to the tent of Abraham and Sarah. They are seated at a table blessing a cup of wine, under the oak of Mamre. If you look closely, you will see a sacrificed calf in the chalice, reminding the viewer of the cross. The table, prepared for eating and tilted toward the viewer, is an invitation to the Eucharist. From left to right, each figure is keyed to a person of the Trinity. Like all icons, this image is theology in art. The persons are equal in proportion and dignity, they all carry staffs to symbolize their power, and are shown with golden wings and halos. Today, the best place to see Rublev s work is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, at the heart of the vast Holy Trinity monastery about an hour from Moscow. After decades of persecution, it is now once again a living monastery, a world heritage site, and the spiritual home of Russian Orthodoxy. A Google visit is highly recommended today! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered by the parish priest upon request. We welcome new members who wish to worship with us and support the parish s work and mission. New Parishioner Welcome session is offered on the 2nd Sunday of the month. Time of registration is 10:45AM 11:25AM.
