Dear St. John s, The holy season of Lent, which culminates with Holy Week, marks one of the most important times in the Christian year for disciples like us. I can t say it any better than the Book of Common Prayer does, in the Ash Wednesday liturgy: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God s holy Word. In the pages that follow, you will find many ways that we have planned to help you to observe a holy Lent, and a blessed Holy Week as we prepare for Christ s triumph over death at Easter. I look forward to sharing this sacred time with you all, and will hold you in my prayers as we walk toward Jerusalem, the Cross, the grave, and the life beyond it. Faithfully, A GUIDE TO LENT & HOLY WEEK

2017 Lenten Meditation Guide from Episcopal Relief & Development Episcopal Relief and Development, the humanitarian outreach arm of the Episcopal Church, has published a collection of new Lenten Meditations, which are available free of charge in the parish office, in both English and Spanish. These excellent meditations were written specifically for Lent 2017, and feature writers and voices from around the Episcopal Church, including our Presiding Bishop, the Most Rev. Michael Curry. These short, daily meditations will contribute significantly to your Lenten journey, and are available now. If you d prefer to receive the meditations in a daily from ERD, you can do so on the Episcopal Relief & Development website, episcopalrelief.org/lent Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper Tuesday, February 28 5:30pm-7:30pm St. Benedicts 910 Bowker St. SE Lacey, WA A GUIDE TO LENT & HOLY WEEK 2017

Wednesdays in Lent 6 8:20pm on March 8, 15, 22, 29, and April 5, 12 This year, St. John's is trying a new program offering for Lent. We will offer a meal at 6 pm for everyone together before breaking into one of three groups: A book study led by the clergy & congregation members (there's more about the book below) A choir experience for anyone who wants to sing A program for children & teens The evening will end at 8 pm with a brief, sung prayer service in the style of the monastery at Taizé, France. This year's selection for our Lent Book Study is Being Disciples: Essentials in the Christian Life, by Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury. Each week, we will look at one of his essays on the elements of discipleship: Being Disciples Faith, Hope, and Love Forgiveness Holiness Faith in Society Life in the Spirit Copies of the book are available in the parish office for $10 each, or you can buy the book on Amazon or elsewhere. 6 Palm Sunday: The Sunday of the Passion April 9 Prologue to the Triduum (The Three Great Days) The Liturgy for The Sunday of the Passion, or Palm Sunday, kicks off Holy Week. The service begins with Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem, but then quickly shifts mood with the dramatic reading of the Passion, the congregation takes on the part of the crowd. The reading of the Passion in this way serves as an overture to the Triduum (which means The Three Great Days ) later in the week, when we journey through the events that culminate in Jesus crucifixion and death, without which there would be no Easter. All services begin with the Liturgy of the Palms, followed by a procession into the Church. We will meet outdoors and process around the church (weather permitting). Please try to arrive ten minutes before the service is scheduled to get a palm branch. You are also invited to bring a branch from your yard to carry. At the end of the service, baskets of blessed palm crosses will be available in the Narthex. Consider picking one up to take to a friend who is sick or otherwise unable to attend church. Save your crosses to be burned next year on Shrove Tuesday for Ash Wednesday. 6 A GUIDE TO LENT & HOLY WEEK 2017

The Triduum: Maundy Thursday April 13 The Last Supper, Foot-washing, and Vigil with Christ The drama of the Three Great Days begins with Maundy Thursday, the night of the Last Supper. The Agape Meal 6 pm in the Parish Hall The Agape Feast dates to apostolic times and is a simple meal of soup, bread, cheese, olives, and fruit. Parishioners are asked to bring a dish to share as a testament of our Christian love for each other. No sweets or alcohol, please. Contact Michelle in the parish office (michelle@stjohnsoly.org) if you would like to bring a dish to share. The Holy Eucharist with Footwashing 7 pm in the Church This service recalls the Last Supper of Jesus on the night of his betrayal. It focuses on two major themes: Holy Hospitality and the Institution of the Eucharist. Holy Hospitality: The Foot-Washing Coming from the Latin Mandatum Novum, or New Commandment, Maundy refers to the commandment Jesus gave to his disciples: Love one another as I have loved you. At this service, Christ s commandment is enacted by the Foot-Washing. After an invitation from the Presider, you may come A GUIDE TO LENT & HOLY WEEK

forward to have your feet washed by the clergy. We encourage you to take part in this beautiful ritual. The Institution of the Eucharist: After the Foot-Washing, we proceed with the celebration of the Eucharist. Every Sunday, we hear the Words of Institution during the Eucharistic Prayer. They begin: On the night he was handed over to death and suffering, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread... The familiar words take on a poignant urgency and reorient us to the central mystery of our faith. The Stripping of the Altar The service concludes with the stripping of the altar as an act of preparation for Good Friday. One way to deepen our understanding of the symbolism of this moment is to meditate on the following verse from Psalm 22: They divide my garments among them; they cast lots for my clothing. Vigil in the Garden of Repose Following the Eucharist, until noon Friday in the Chapel During the night on Thursday, a watch is kept before the consecrated bread on the Altar of Repose in the Chapel. The consecrated bread is felt to be the real presence of Christ, and so we keep vigil with Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane on the last night before he is handed over to be crucified. The tradition comes from the question Jesus asked his disciples Peter, James and John, who kept falling asleep as Jesus prayed in agony awaiting his arrest: Can t you keep watch with me even one hour? So we keep watch, praying through the night. 8 A GUIDE TO LENT & HOLY WEEK 2017

The Triduum: Good Friday April 14 The Liturgy of Good Friday, and Stations of the Cross There are three components of the observance of Good Friday in the Episcopal Church: Fasting, the Liturgy of Good Friday, and the Stations of the Cross. Fasting The Book of Common Prayer appoints Ash Wednesday and Good Friday as days of fasting. On Ash Wednesday we fast in imitation of Jesus fast of forty days in the wilderness. On Good Friday, we fast in thanksgiving for his crucifixion. Traditionally, a strict fast such as the Good Friday fast entails eating nothing for the bulk of the day, and having a simple meal sometime after one has been to church for the Good Friday Liturgy. Some choose to extend the fast until after The Great Vigil of Easter. If you have medical issues, you should not fast. The Liturgy of Good Friday 12 noon & 7 pm in the Church This Liturgy marks Christ s crucifixion, but it is not a funeral. Instead, the focus is on extolling the glory of the cross, through which all creation has been redeemed. The Church is bare and the ministers enter in silence. The Liturgy of the Word concludes with the Passion According to John. The sermon and The Solemn Collects follow. In praying the Solemn Collects, we pray on behalf of the entire world for which Christ died. After the Solemn Collects, a heavy wooden cross is brought in by a priest and positioned at the top of the Chancel steps. Worshippers are invited to come forward and venerate the cross by kneeling before it, touching it, standing next to it, even kissing it. During the A GUIDE TO LENT & HOLY WEEK

Veneration of the Cross. In response to the saving power of the cross, we conclude the Veneration by singing the ancient hymn Pange lingua (Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle). The service concludes with a brief communion (not a full Eucharist) taken from the bread consecrated the night before at the Maundy Thursday service. The Stations of the Cross 3pm, in the Church with the Compline Choir In the Stations of the Cross, we experience Christ s journey from his judgment to crucifixion and death, as we walk with him from one station to the next. This devotion has been a part of Christian practice since the early church, and we re-enact it as a part of our Good Friday commemoration at the time that Christ s journey ended, at his death on the cross, which the Gospels record as having happened at 3pm. 10 A GUIDE TO LENT & HOLY WEEK 2017

The Triduum: The Great Vigil of Easter April 15 The Empty Tomb & Renewal of Baptismal Vows The Great Vigil of Easter 7:30 pm in the Church This year, we will be hosting St. Benedict s & St. Christopher s churches for the Great Vigil of Easter. Elaborate and dramatic, this service utilizes all the senses as we recount salvation history and revel in the saving power of God s great mercy. There will be incense at this service. The New Fire: The service begins in darkness in the church. A new fire is kindled and blessed, and the Paschal Candle is lit from this fire. Candles held by the congregation are lit. The procession moves through the darkened church behind the Paschal Candle. An ancient hymn, the Exsultet, is sung. Salvation History: Several Old Testament lessons are now read. The account of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea is given particular attention since this event is at the center of the Jewish Passover. Christians believe Christ, in his death and resurrection, to symbolize the Passover Lamb. Each reading is followed by a hymn and a collect relating what has been read in the Old Testament to the Mystery of Christ. Baptisms and the Renewal of Baptismal Vows: Since the earliest days of the church, The Great Vigil of Easter has always been a time set aside for baptisms where, by God s grace, we baptize people into a new life of Christ. Even when there are no baptisms, we remember our own initiation into the body of Christ through water and the Holy Spirit as we recite the Baptismal Covenant and say the prayers read at our own baptism. A GUIDE TO LENT & HOLY WEEK

Resurrection: After the baptism and/or the renewal of baptismal vows, the Presider calls out Alleluia! Christ is risen! Then the lights come on, the organ leads us in an eruption of song, and bells are rung with great fanfare! You are encouraged to bring your own bells from home and join in the ruckus! Cow bells, sleigh bells, hand bells, Christmas bells. Any bell will do! Or borrow a bell as you enter the church. The service then continues with the first festive Eucharist of Easter. 12 A GUIDE TO LENT & HOLY WEEK 2017
