3 PLEASE SAVE THE DATE ST. JOHN'S OF LATTINGTOWN SPRING DINNER DANCE Saturday, May 12th PIPING ROCK CLUB Invitation to follow SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS I have to be honest here. In year's past teaching Lent to Sunday School kids has pretty much been like baking a soufflé and watching it

4 sink! Poor Lent. It doesn't have an Advent calendar with chocolates. It's worse. It's about giving up chocolate. And it does get worse sorry to say. Lent doesn't end with a joyous birth like Christmas does or presents brought by kings and presents under the tree. It ends with death on a cross which is quite an unpleasant way to die. So what I am going to tell you next may come as a shock. The Lenten soufflé didn't collapse this year! How did that happen you ask? This not unsubstantial miracle came because they were simply ready. They were ready to follow Christ to the Cross and celebrate His resurrection this year with a hugely greater understanding. As one youth said, "Giving up chocolate is so fake." So that was that, the clarion call to find out what Lent was all about; that if Christmas was important than Lent must be too. It might not have babies and kings and angels flying all about or chocolate but that's okay. They felt deep within that there was a better, bigger present waiting at the end of all this-the Easter Resurrection of our beloved Lord Christ. In our last Lenten lesson it will not surprise you that the kids felt if Advent has a

5 calendar-shouldn't Lent as well? But it couldn't have chocolates of course. But the end was worth counting down the time for certainly. I went off to help them figure out a calendar for Lent and Holy Weeksomething authentic not truncated from Advent. When I reviewed all the Lent lessons, wood had been the theme. We talked about the actual tree that the cross was cut from. How maybe it began as a lowly acorn and would grow up to serve Jesus Christ himself. We talked about the fact that this tree will live eternally because we see it everywhere in every cross we see atop a church, over an altar or around someone's neck. We talked about how much wood Noah needed for the Ark to save his family while Jesus just needed two pieces of wood to save all of humanity. And the last one is a doozy. We studied a painting of Jesus in his father's carpenter shop. Many of the kids have shop class. And they said every piece of wood craft has a function. We then realized that the Romans had a function for the cross-death, but Jesus had another function for the crosssaving. That was it-the Lenten soufflé elevated! To honor the kids hard work I prayed and shortly thereafter found ribbon with trees on it. That was the calendar I realized! So we made Lenten bell pulls. The two sticks at bottom and top represent the cross. The top tree is a Christmas tree where our calendar begins. The next tree features a cross signifying the beginning of the Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday. Next the tree with red hearts represents Jesus shedding His blood for love of us on Good Friday. The next tree in yellow or with a halo is the Resurrection tree; proof that He changed the function! And finally the Easter Egg tree symbolizing rebirth. Actually every Lent is like a Cadbury Egg (we got chocolate in) when we take the journey learning to see life hidden in death, hope hidden in sin, faith hidden in fear, triumph hidden in tragedy and love in absolutely everything.
