1 Trinity Times Proclaiming Christ s Love through Witness & Service March 2019 WHAT S INSIDE 2 Lent 2 Leadership & Office hours 3 Wednesday Cafe 3 Ministry Moments 4 Thank you 5 Worship Leaders 6 Calendar Ash Wednesday Worship Noon 7:00 P.M. Imposition of ashes and Holy Communion at both services. A publication of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Elgin, IL From The Pastor As we enter March, we also enter one of my favorite seasons of the church year. Lent is a time of contemplation for Christians all around the world, as we spiritually journey toward the cross with Christ. For many, this can be a difficult journey as we dive deeply into thoughts of repentance, knowing that it is the sin of our world that led to Golgotha. However, I have also come to see Lent as a time to bask in the glow of God s Love - a Love that has such depth as to bring Jesus into a mission whereby he connects to us in death, so that we may connect to him in resurrection and new life! Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 6 th. We are reminded that we are dust and to dust we shall return. The fact is that there can be no resurrection to new life without first experiencing death. Thus, these words provide us with Good News. We will all experience death someday, but Christ has joined us in our death. Even more amazingly, he did so of his own free will! Therefore, as much as Lent is a time to reflect upon our sin and our mortality, it is also a time of Thanksgiving for Grace that exists beyond our level of comprehension. Lent also provides us with a model for daily life. It calls us to a life of intentional devotion and prayer, in which we take our place amongst Jesus disciples. We follow Jesus through the stories of the Gospels, ranging from parables to miracles, all the while learning more and more what it means to live a Christ-centered life. We are taught to be Christ-like. This devotional walk begins with a reminder of our mortality, and ends with a gut-wrenching journey through Jesus arrest and crucifixion. Still, death cannot have the final word. Even as Lent ends with death and our vigil at the tomb, we awake to resurrection and new life on Easter morning! So, we prepare to walk this road of Lent together. We go forth boldly knowing that it leads to pain and suffering, but that it is necessary if we are to receive the glorious gift that is to come. We journey in the shadow of sin, to a gruesome cross in full awareness that only God can take an instrument such as a cross and make it into the most beautiful sign of Love that this world has ever known. We worship a Love so deep that it would willfully experience human death in order to share divine and eternal life. We run the race that is laid out before us with perseverance and faith. This is the season of Lent! Thanks be to God! -Rev Jeffrey G Mikyska 1

Place in offering plate or return to church office. As spring approaches please prayerfully consider tending the outside of our church, helping with the lawn and garden or inside the church, serving at the Lenten lunches! Hello Wonderful MLK Supporters, Thank You, Thank you one and all! We did it again! We exceeded our goal of 30,000 pounds of food, personal care items, and household supplies. As of today, we have collected and distributed over 60,000 pounds of food and personal care items. This was accomplished by combining the 12,000 pounds of collected food with the buying power of the over $6,000 which was donated by our local churches, schools, and supporters. As you know, $1.00 buys about 8 pounds of food. Because of your hard work, faith, and compassion, there are many families in our community who will be able to eat a decent meal and not worry about having food for their children What a great weekend! We just concluded Elgin s eighth exciting MLK Food Drive, our eighth inspiring MLK Youth Conference, and this year marked our 34th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Prayer Breakfast. Without your great help, we would not have been able to honor the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in such a grand fashion. Words cannot express how much the Elgin Human Relations Commission, the Dr. King Planning Committee, and the wonderful people of Elgin thank you for your great support. I would like to offer a personal thank you for your kindness, generosity, time, and never ending assistance. Because of all of your great support, we are keeping the dream alive. Now the question really does become, where do we go from here? As for the food drive, the answer is simple. Next year we must hit 20,000 pounds of food and $10,000. I think we can do it; in fact, with your continued help, I KNOW WE CAN! Respectfully, Joe Wars, Chair Dr. King Food Drive Do you love working with numbers? We need you to serve on an audit team and/or the finance team! ASAP Contact Pastor Jeff 4
