Jesus seemed very harsh on the rich people, As it s difficult for them to be very humble. There s a danger that they are driven by pride, With no time for God, from Him they try to hide. The rich may easily fall into self-deceit, To make money they may even try to cheat. Money gives them a great sense of achievement, The more they have the more is their fulfillment. Money often gets them into competition, Never content, they re blinded by ambition. Once they meet one goal they pursue another, In this mad game money becomes their master. Insatiable thirst for money causes strain, And they become numb to their spiritual pain. Their effort to find happiness goes in vain, For their eternal life they will make no gain. The rich tend to keep money as their treasure, They have made so much that they cannot measure. Money can only buy them earthly pleasure, With death everything will come to a closure. Wealth and riches come to you from God as a gift, You should use them as they re for others benefit By sharing them with the poor and the needy- You serve God and you will never be greedy. Questions: 1. Which line of this poem challenges you to see past the world around you? 2. Are the rich the only ones facing this type of challenge? 3. How will you be able to overcome this challenge in your own life? Reflections: My answer to the question, Will the rich be saved? is a resounding Yes!. The rich are children of God just like anybody else. There is no automatic salvation to any particular group. God loves the rich as much as He loves the poor, the abandoned, the sick, the homeless, the prisoners and the criminals. God is love. He knows only how to love, whether we are saints or sinners. He never condemned the rich. As a matter of fact He mixed with the rich and the poor in the same way without any distinction or differences of behavior. He was comfortable in any social setting or gathering. He treated all with love and respect. His approach to people was one of love. However, he noticed the struggles and challenges of rich people to follow the path of God. He realized how difficult it would be for the rich people to serve the Lord (Continued on page 2) Fremont Blvd Fremont, CA office@sjapostle.net

2 Message from Father Antony (Continued from page 1) whole-heartedly. He was aware of the pain the rich people would go through renouncing their wealth. The rich people may be more busy dealing with the affairs of the world than affairs of God. With no apparent need to depend on anyone for help, they may grow into a sense of adequacy which may make them selfreliant. They may begin to count all their blessings as rewards of their hard work, and may fail to see the hand of God in their lives. There is a danger that they may claim ownership over everything that they have made, and may sideline God from their lives. In the Gospel of Mark, he narrates the story of a rich young man who wanted to follow Jesus and inherit internal life. Jesus told him to follow the Ten Commandments, which he said he practiced from his childhood. Jesus loved him and told him that he lacked one thing. Jesus advised him to sell everything he had and give the money to the poor. This, He told the young man, would help him find the treasure in heaven and to come and follow Him. The rich man suddenly becoming very sad and went away disappointed because he had too much to give up. Seeing the rich young man go away, Jesus turned to the apostles and reminded them how hard it would be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! He even made a comparison by saying that it would be easier for a camel to enter through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God (Mark: 10:17-27). Money is an exception to the law of diminishing returns. The more one has, the more he still wants. Making money soon becomes an ambitious plan that never ceases. Soon it becomes an obsession, which drives you into competition. Money made by honest means is praiseworthy, provided you do not make money your master and yourself its slave. Money is necessary, because without it you cannot live a comfortable life with good food, clothing, and shelter. Money is important in our life as long as it does not dictate our life and we don t make money our god. Jesus said that we cannot serve both God and mammon. An insatiable quest for money can take you away from God, as you begin to rely more on money and forget the One who provides it. Undue attachment to money can make you so complacent that you may forget money does not follow you after death. You can be so busy making money that you may forget to live your life and fail to nourish your family with love and care. It is important to consider that God has entrusted you with His wealth. It is not your wealth and does not belong to you: it belongs exclusively to God. He has given you the responsibility to use it according to His will. Are you doing so? Jesus is not against the rich people who have wealth. He is against their attitude of pride and arrogance, which blind them so much that they fail to share their blessings with others. They get so engrossed in counting their money that they have no time or money for charity. God wants you to enjoy your life appropriately. Legitimate enjoyment is good. What is important is to have the spirit of poverty, which makes you see millions of unfortunate brothers and sisters who must survive by eating the crumbs that fall from your table. You should not forget that when you give a glass of cold water to a thirsty brother or sister, you are actually giving it to Jesus. Your wealth is God s gift to you, and the only way you can show your gratitude to Him is by sharing it with others. By amassing and hoarding your money, you deprive the hungry of their daily bread. In addition, there will be a judgment day when you will be expected to give an account of your life. The more you have, the more you are expected to account to your Creator. You must learn to use your blessings as opportunities to serve the needy and the poor. Money seems to be the cause of all problems in the world today. Look at the money-related problems that plague our world today. Criminal rates are ever on the increase, and money lies at the root of these cases. In the past we needed money to look after our needs. Today greed drives men to amassing more and more wealth. Behind every war or sociopolitical problem is money. Instead of man controlling and using money wisely, today money is controlling man and makes man more selfish and self-centered. The rich help the poor to have a comfortable life here on earth. The poor help the rich to have a wonderful life in the next. The way to heaven is only through service of mankind. There are no shortcuts to eternity. Money can never buy heaven. Money, if used with love and responsibility in service to the poor, will make our journey to Heaven easier. At the end of our lives we will be judged based on what Jesus taught, I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me water (Mathew 25:35). The more money we make, the more grateful to God we should become, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2. Corinthians 9:7) Most of us spend some portion of our lives planning different events such as weddings, graduation parties, birthday parties, vacations, and retirement parties. Today, many families are also finding a tremendous value in the many benefits that preplanning cemetery and funeral arrangements provides. Pre-planning provides peace of mind knowing these arrangements have been made in advance. Pre-planning avoids the burden on family members to make decisions during a very emotional time. Pre-planning helps the family avoid bank loans, arranging finance plans, raiding savings or selling assets to pay for a funeral and burial in other words avoid emotional overspending. Pre-planning ensure your wishes are met Pre-planning Cemetery, funeral and Cremation Services are guaranteed at today s prices. Flexible and affordable interest FREE payment plans that everyone qualifies for. I am so glad that we made an advance planning one year before the passing of my mother. My name is Shirley Aldana, choir director at the 12Noon Mass on Sundays. I work at the Catholic Cemetery. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call me at or me at shirleya@cfcsoakland.org. will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Contact Nona Cornejo TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION They say that it is not so much that Columbus discovered America, but rather that after he arrived, the new world stayed discovered. The sponsorship of Ferdinand and Isabella assured that the news would flash around Europe with an air of authority that other discoverers lacked. One of the oft-mentioned early visitors is Saint Brendan the Navigator, a sixth-century Irish monk who had trouble staying at home. He is said to have sailed to the Isle of the Blessed in a leather-bound boat, and to have been away from his monastery for seven years. Upon his return, the stories of adventures to a new land attracted pilgrims to his monastery in the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Columbus is said to have referred to The Voyage of Saint Brendan, a very popular adventure in those days. Only after his American journey is Brendan said to have gone to tamer lands to the east, England and Scotland. In 1976, Tim Severin set out on a two-year voyage to America from Ireland in a leather-bound boat, traveling in summer and hopscotching from the Faroes to Iceland to Newfoundland, and encountering along the way exactly what Saint Brendan describes: icebergs, whales, and porpoises. Scholars warn not to dismiss this too quickly: just as the ancient Egyptian monks sought to live in the desert, for the Celtic monks exile in a boat was the Irish equivalent. Five centuries after Brendan, other Irish monks may have visited here as a refuge from Viking terror. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
