October 18, 2015 DON T WATER DOWN BAPTISM Jesus made no bones about it Baptism is of extraordinary importance. This is the way He put it in speaking to Nicodemus: Unless a man be born again of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of Heaven. (John 3:5) All through the New Testament it is absolutely clear that everyone who wants to be a Christian must be baptized. When Christ was about to leave this earth and ascend into heaven, He told the apostles: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:19) One of my principal concerns as pastor is that the Sacrament of Baptism be made as available as reasonably possible. Throughout the year the Celebration of Baptism is scheduled regularly on the first and third Sundays of the month at 1:30 in the afternoon. Sometimes a family will request an individual baptism and that request receives a welcoming response. To my surprise I have noticed that at times a baptism will be arranged and it is in the relatively distant future. For example, a family will call in the fall and arrange a baptism in the new year. It is the mind of the Catholic Church that a child should be baptized as soon as reasonably possible after birth. The Roman Ritual puts it this way: An infant should be baptized within the first weeks after birth. Sometimes a newborn infant will have medical problems that are of a relatively serious nature. Such children should be baptized immediately and there should be no delay at all. If a priest or deacon is not available, anyone with the use of reason can and should baptize. It is done in this way: The person baptizing pours ordinary water on the forehead of the person to be baptized, saying while pouring, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The water does NOT need to be blessed. Any ordinary water is sufficient: tap water, bottled water---any true water is fine. Please note: the water is to be poured the water is not to be applied in the manner of an anointing it is to be poured so that it flows over the head. Once the person is baptized correctly, he or she is baptized forever. The baptism is not repeated, but there is a special ceremony for acknowledging

that the child has already received the priceless gift of the Holy Trinity. Thus, parents should not feel that if their child is baptized in an emergency that he or she is shortchanged because the baptism cannot be repeated. Parenthetically let me add that it is my experience that the vast majority of children baptized because they are ill or premature do indeed recover their health. I appeal to all of you to value the gift of belonging to Jesus Christ and His Church by the Sacrament of Baptism. Please do not put it off or delay it for social reasons. While the party afterwards is a great idea, the main idea is the baptism and possessing Christ and His grace. You can always have a smaller party or postpone the party. Baptism itself is that important. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK & DECEASED SICK: Christine Schifaudo, Christine Lucivero, Cecilia Han, Geraldo Peixoto, Kimberly Holmes, Father Brian Dalton, Stacy Test, Owen Hogan, John Moore, Rita Amendola, Diana Coscia, Joseph Fitzgerald, Virginia Fallon, Barney Rinaldi, Jeremy Hogan, Rosemary Herron, Brian Hoffarth, C-el Perdy, arie McLaughlin, Baby Christopher, Dolores Donato, Carolyn Hayes, Joann McDermott, Roland Tudisco, Judy Eberson-Kospovik, Karen Brassel, Corinne Capozzi, Mary Price DECEASED: Eileen M. The bishops pastoral letter on stewardship reminds us, Every member of the Church is called to evangelize, and the practice of authentic Christian stewardship inevitably leads to evangelization. STEWARDSHIP 10/12/14 $22,244 10/11/15 $23,023 (+3.50%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. This weekend s second collection is for World Missions.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY Today is World Mission Sunday. In Scripture, we read that St. Paul asked the Gentile Churches to take up a collection to support the Church in Jerusalem. Now we are asked to reach out and support the young churches throughout our world. Your prayers and generous gifts to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the collection today will help missionaries offer the poor of these areas practical help as they share the mercy of God. It will ensure the development of local dioceses, and support the work of priests, religious and lay leaders who serve those on the margins and in most need. Go out to the whole world through your gift in today s collection.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION Yesterday Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski conferred the sacrament of Confirmation on almost 200 young people of our parish. 11 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "We in the Church have a great struggle to defend life... life is a gift not a threat." Pope Benedict XVI Catholic Hospitals Sued: The ACLU is launching a crusade to force Catholic hospitals to act against Catholic moral teachings and the natural law. In August, the ACLU threatened to sue a CA Catholic hospital operated by the Sisters of Mercy, if it would not allow a woman to be sterilized after giving birth there. (cnsnews.com, 8/26/15) On Oct. 1, the ACLU filed suit against Trinity Health Corp., a Catholic health system operating over 80 hospitals nationwide, because they refused to perform abortions on women experiencing a miscarriage. "This case has no merit," said Trinity Health. "'The Ethical and Religious Directives' are entirely consistent with high-quality health care, and our clinicians continue to provide superb care throughout the communities we serve." (nytimes.com, 10/2/15; buzzfeed.com, 10/1/15) Christians Most Persecuted: A recent PEW study confirms that Christians are the most persecuted religion in the world today. Northern Iraq and Syria, once a stronghold of the Christian faith, have witnessed an exodus of over 13.6 million believers - most fleeing the unspeakable brutality and certain death from ISIS. "We left in our pajamas. My son walked barefoot...," said an Assyrian mom. (libertyrelief.cc) "I must renew my repeated appeals regarding the painful situation of the entire Middle East...where Christians...have been forced to witness the destruction of their places of worship, their cultural and religious heritage, their houses and property, and face either fleeing, paying...or enslavement." Pope Francis Mark Your Calendar: October 21st 7:30 PM Corpus Christi/St. Aidan CFFR meeting in Msgr Kirwin Hall. All are welcome! Thursday, October 7:30 PM, St. Patrick's, Smithtown, will host Rabbi Aryeh Spero, well known speaker and author, Push Back - Reclaiming the American Judeo- Christian Spirit, 280 E Main St., Smithtown, NY 11787

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Once in a while someone stops me to tell me something related to the CDs we have in the parish. I am very grateful to hear them as it is important to know what effect the CDs have on the people who listen to them. This time was an older man who tells me his wife had left a CD in the car recorder as he was taking his brother to a doctor s appointment when the CD started playing. His brother, very depress because of his sickness, started to listen to it. The CD was about pain and suffering; it was by Jeff Cavins, 15 Things to do in the Midst of Suffering and explain that pain is a mystery we all face in our lives. It will test our faith and if we join our sufferings with Our Lord Jesus Christ we shall find renewed meaning to what we are experiencing in our lives. Well his brother listened to it and then asked to borrow the tape. When our parishioner went back to take his brother to his next appointment, he notice how much better he looked and waited to hear what he had to say. And without asking he was told that the tape had shown him the value of his pain and what he can accomplish accepting the pain and offering for the good of others. I was so impress by this witness and so grateful to God! We can touch many people if we have the courage to pass our CDs to those the Holy Spirit put in our path! Let s do just that and we can help many souls to get closer to Jesus and discern anew our faith. St. Aidan is proud to offer to all our parishioners a way to reach the most trustworthy Catholic teachers, speakers, and authors for you to bring them into your homes. FORMED is an exciting new online site to the best teaching videos, audio, and e-books to deepen you and your family their relationships with Christ and His Church. It is available anytime and anywhere on your computer or devices. Formed connects Catholics to the best video studies, movies, talks, books, available to form their faith, wherever and whenever they need it. Want to know more about it? It is totally free; I will love to hear from you! toticon@aol.com or It is time we start to work to bring more people to our Faith. What our entire parish offers you would help you to accomplish just that! Pray the Lord will direct your steps to do this and more. God Bless you! Toti Conforti ST. 18 KNIGHTS CORNER PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT - This past summer, Pope Francis addressed a need for clean drinking water in the world, especially in Africa. In response to the Pope s statement the Knights of Columbus, through a partnership with the non-profit organization, charity; water will provide financing to build 20 new clean water wells in Africa. This project will improve the health and save the lives of thousands of people. At the same time the Knights will continue to support the Wells of Hope organization which for years has dug wells in Central America to bring clean water to remote villages. The Knights stewardship of the environment also includes our responsibility as a corporate citizen. In New Haven, we have replaced all the windows in our corporate headquarters building with state-ofthe-art, energy-efficient windows. We estimate that it will now take 13% less energy to cool our building and 31% less energy to heat it.
