3 October 20, 2013 CARA CARA (Center for the Applied Research in the Apostolate) is an organization founded in 1964 which works with statistics and their implications for the life of the Church. If you look on their website, you can find an awful lot of interesting information about Catholicism in the United States. Recently CARA has pointed out both good news and bad for us. The good news is that Catholics are the least likely of all religious denominations in the United States to divorce. That really makes me happy although about 27% of Catholics do divorce and that number is far too many. It almost seems that divorce in the United States is growing like a cancer. What once was a rarity is becoming more and more common even for those married over 25 or 30 years. The bad news and it is very bad news is that Catholics are not marrying in Church. This I have mentioned in this column before and is something that priests all over the Diocese of Rockville Centre know: the number of marriages is on a downward spiral. This constitutes a huge pastoral problem. If they don t marry in the Church, what will the relationship such people have with the Church be after marriage? Will they have their children baptized and will they send them to religious education classes? Hopefully, they will. That is, however, only a hope. I can understand (not agree with) why young people avoid a church wedding. For one thing, weddings have been more and more secularized. Every Sunday I read the accounts of marriages in the New York Times and there is not a Sunday I do not read of a couple who was married by a person who became a mail order minister for the occasion. And then there is the ever growing popularity of having the ceremony and reception at a special venue. Another reason that may end the idea of a church wedding is that the couple is not very attached to the Church and may just feel it is more honest to get married in a non-religious atmosphere. As I have said in other columns, many may just wish to avoid Pre-Cana and want to avoid any questions or criticism of their lack of religious practice. I realize they are young and may think of planning a marriage in church as something that is challenging. It is not and I have found the couples who come here friendly and very cooperative. Parents and relatives are often faced with the problem when the news is broken that the wedding will be outside the Catholic Church. Certainly they should express the teaching of the Church that Catholics are obliged to be married in a

4 way that is recognized by the Catholic Church. After that, it is better to say nothing more and try to avoid unpleasantness and pressuring the couple to do something they don t want to do. There is no point in alienating them further from the Church by arguing and harassing tactics. That will accomplish nothing but cause unhappiness and division in the family. In no way am I condoning marriage outside the Church. Such a marriage is invalid and the couple is not married in the eyes of God and the Catholic Church. Please note that for various reasons a Catholic may receive permission from the bishop to marry a non-catholic in a ceremony that takes place outside a Catholic church. Should you have any questions about this at all, please speak with me and I will do everything I can to help and clarify the situation. Finally, many people are invalidly married (were never married in accord with the law of the Church) and these situations can be readily corrected. The sad reality is that many invalidly married Catholics can easily marry in the Church and don t. In so many cases very little needs to be done all they need to do is talk to a priest. Again, feel free to talk to me about these matters. I will do everything I can to help you. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald FLOWER MEMORIAL A BIRTHDAY THANKSGIVING GINNY GALLAGHER Requested by Maura Gallagher (Mary s Shrine) Today s Gospel calls all of us, not just the apostles, to go...and make disciples. If we cannot actually go to the missions, we can answer Jesus call by giving generously of our prayers and financial resource4s to support those who can and so. STEWARDSHIP COLLECTION 10/14/12 $25,638 10/13/13 $22,848 (-10.88%) This weekend s second collection is for World Mission Sunday. Next weekend s second collection is for the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish!

5 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Last week I was asked by a parishioner why I write and propose to pray the Rosary when it is not part of Scripture, and we are to follow the Bible, the Sacraments, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. I will try to answer it with a few miracles attributed to the power of the Rosary, and what many Popes had recommended. But above all, what the most Holy Virgin had asked so many times! In Fatima she said to pray the Rosary as the efficacious means of stopping the wars, sanctify ourselves, console Our Lord, obtain the salvation of many souls. Pope Pius XI, Pope Leo XIII, and all the Popes in modern times, recommended to pray it as the most excellent form of prayer. In October 7, 1571 a fierce battle between the Christians and Turkish took place in Lepanto and, even as the Christians were vastly outnumbered, their victory saved Christian Europe. It happened while in Rome thousands were marching in the streets reciting the Rosary! The Feast of the Most Holy Rosary is celebrated on this day. After World War II, Catholic Austria was under the communist Russia. For 3 years they endured this tyranny, then they remembered the Battle of Lepanto and how the victory came after praying the Rosary so they started a crusade where more than 70,000 people pledged to pray it daily. Then on May 13, 1955, the anniversary of Fatima, the Marxists left, peacefully, Austria. In 1962, the communist were taking over Brazil. A woman, named A. Bastos, organized a Rosary rally in Sao Paulo, 600,000 women praying the Rosary broke up the takeover without a single death encountered. The above accounts are just a few examples of the Power of this prayer! Let s pray the Rosary with our children as Our Mother asks us to do, and we will see a change in our family. This week we have wonderful CDs! Discipline That Last a Lifetime, by Dr. Ray Guarendy. A Guide to Raising (almost) Perfect Kids, by Dr. Gregory and Lisa Popcak. How to Apply our Faith to our Families, by Kimberly Hahn. All CDs are absolutely wonderful for families, try to give them away, many will benefit for your act of kindness! Toti Conforti SICK: DECEASED: PLEASE PRAY Barbara Ueland, Christine Schifaudo, Peter F. Brala, Christine Lucivero, Geoffrey Hamilton, Jenny Malewicz, Louis Malewicz, Marianne Cusmano, Cecilia Han, Geraldo Peixoto, Kimberly Holmes, Owen Hogan, Addie Mina, Nina Procaccini Honorato Martinez, Carmine Manzolillo, Ann Marie Monroe, Julius Lipp, Bishop James Daly and for all those who have died serving our country. REMEMBERING OUR SERVICE MEN & WOMEN Protect our service men and women, Lord Jesus, as we continue to pray for world peace.
