3 September 29, 2013 THE POPE SPEAKS Last week there was more than a little interest in the Interview with the Pope. Here in the United States it was published in the Jesuit magazine America a publication with which I do not always agree, but which I highly recommend to you. You can also find the article online. The point is I urge you to read the interview in its entirety. Read the exact text don t be taken in by the sensational snippets of the media or you might miss the whole point. One of the essential points of serious scholarship is to read the primary sources not just a quote taken here or there and perhaps out of context. There are a number of interesting things that the Holy Father said. I want to call attention to only a few in this short article. The interviewer, Father Antonio Spadaro, S.J., asked Pope Francis who he was. The question was put in this way: Who is Jose Mario Bergoglio The answer was somewhat surprising and amazingly candid: I am a sinner. Right then and there the Pope was being utterly truthful and revealed that he has no exalted ideas about himself. He, like all of us, is a sinner and is in need of the mercy and kindness of God. This is something we can all tend to forget from both perspectives. Yes, we are sinners, but the other side of the equation is that God is a merciful and loving Father and never tires of forgiving us. The Holy Father has made this clear over and over again in the first seven months of his pontificate. It is something we all need to remember. Bishop Emil Wcela, a retired Auxiliary of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, has asked teenagers who was the most religious person they knew. He says that the answer invariably comes back: my grandmother. For some reason kids see in their grandmothers an image of God and a living sign of a truly religious person. (Congratulations to all of you holy grandmothers!) Pope Francis is just the same. He speaks with great affection about the holiness of his grandmother and how much she loved him. As a matter of fact, he tells us that he carries a copy of her will in his breviary. She is a saint who has suffered so much, also spiritually, and yet always went forward with courage. More than anything else in the interview the item that got the most coverage was that dealt with morality. The Holy Father correctly said that the Catholic Church must be a mother and a shepherdess. It is her task from Christ to heal the wounds of the faithful and to help them grow in holiness. Pope Francis says that the Church must not be small minded but must always keep the big picture before our eyes. The emphasis must always be on Jesus. The Holy Father changed no doctrines or teaching, but did assert the primacy of mercy and forgiveness. What a wonderful thing to do.

4 Please read the interview. I think you ll enjoy it and find it helpful. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald A SINCERE THANK YOU My sincere thanks to the Rosary Altar Society and all the volunteers who helped make the celebration for Sister Mary Pat Neylon last weekend such a beautiful event. The visiting Dominican Sisters were so happy to be here for this very special event. I sincerely thank you all for the gift of your time and talent. SICK: DECEASED: PLEASE PRAY Barbara Ueland, Christine Schifaudo, Peter F. Brala, Christine Lucivero, Geoffrey Hamilton, Jenny Malewicz, Louis Malewicz, Marianne Cusmano, Baby Scarlet Ann, Linda Colon, Baby Brie Elizabeth, Stacy Test, Owen Hogan, Geraldo Peixoto, Sister Angela Macari, Winnie Gaughran Francisco Petito, Diane Coppola, Agnes Dondero and for all those who have died serving our country. The sin of the rich man in today s parable was not that he was rich, but that he failed to share his wealth with the beggar at his gate. He knew Lazarus, walked by him every time he came in or out, but did nothing to relieve his suffering. Is there a Lazarus in my life? 6 TOTAL CONSECRATION TO JESUS CHRIST THROUGH MARY This is an open invitation to all Catholics who love Mary. Our glorious Queen and Immaculate Mother. She has been assumed body and soul into heaven and continues to watch over each of us from eternity. By making this consecration to Mary, you are placing yourself in her hands; she would help you to become a true follower of Christ. Do not be afraid, she loves you. Remember her words to St. Juan Diego of Guadalupe? Am I not your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Are you not in the crossing of my arms? Consecration Explained Total Consecration is an absolutely beautiful exercise to increase your spirituality, helps us grow in holiness and increase our faith, and to grow closer to Jesus. It consists of a 33-day period of preparation, and is followed by the actual act of consecration. The participants would meet once a week, for six weeks, for fellowship, and would do the consecration at a Mass, the Feast of the Presentation. The preparation takes approximately minutes per day using the book 33 Days to Morning Glory and is intended to prepare our hearts and mind by praying and meditating. This program will also help you to come to a clear understanding of the role of Mary and how she helps us to have a closer union with Jesus. Our late Pope, John Paul II, made Marian consecration a hallmark of his papacy. His motto Totus Tuus (totally yours) reflected his personal consecration to Mary! We strongly encourage all of you to consider signing up for this program, which would deepen your relationship with Mary and her Son, Jesus, a transforming path to holiness!! Meetings will be held on Fridays for 5 weeks beginning October 18th and will finish on Thursday, November 21st with Mass. The meetings will be held in the Convent Community Room at 10:00 AM and 7:30 PM. If you are interested, contact Toti Conforti with questions at (516) or toticon@aol.com.

8 Friends of Saint Aidan (FOSA) Give the Hope and Dream of a Catholic Education to a Child Friends of Saint Aidan (FOSA) is a fund established with the sole purpose of providing tuition assistance to those families who are not able to pay for Catholic Education at Saint Aidan School only. These are members of our Saint Aidan School family that are being faced with the difficult decision of leaving the school because of a traumatic event (job loss, family problems, etc.) in their lives that makes paying for a Catholic Education impossible. The reason we established FOSA is due to two factors; 1) The Diocese Tomorrow s Hope Fund has been depleted and more families are looking toward it than ever before to help pay for Catholic Education. 2) We can no longer pass the burden on to the other families in the school. Perhaps you might consider a donation as a memorial to a loved one. At a time of loss many families inquire about memorial donations to our school and our parish. This is a wonderful opportunity to memorialize a loved one. We have memorial cards that are sent to the families of the person for whom the memorial has been purchased acknowledging the gift. The funds we raise will only go to those families in need as determined by the Pastor and Principal. This weekend s second collection is for FOSA (September 28th/29th). Additional donations envelopes are available in the church and in the rectory office. For information please call Lynn Przeniczny at (516) x9104. If you can t feed a hundred people, than feed just one Mother Theresa Why not sponsor a student in St. Aidan School. Make a difference! Make the hope and dream of Catholic Education a reality! Make a donation. Thank you and God Bless!

9 Prayer and Witness in the Public Square Rosary Rally For Religious Liberty & the Preservation of Catholic Healthcare The way of the Lord may be difficult to discern in Catholic health care today, but the obligation the need to find him and to build for, with, and through him, remains stronger than ever. Pope Francis concluded his first homily as the Bishop of Rome by invoking the Holy Spirit to grant the entire Church a fundamental grace, which is essential to the mission and identity of Catholic health care in particular: to walk, to build, to profess Jesus Christ crucified. John A. Di Camillo, Be.L. As of January 1, 2014, the HHS (Health and Human Services) Mandate imposes crushing fines on Catholic hospitals if they do not provide health insurance which covers products and services in direct violation of church teachings. Join us to pray the rosary for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin in preserving freedom of conscience and protecting Catholic healthcare. Also, hear speakers with the latest news on the imminent threat to Catholic Healthcare. Saturday, October 5th from 10:00-11:30 AM at Good Samaritan Hospital 1000 Montauk Hwy; West Islip.
