3 August 24, 2014 THE BIG GOOD-BYE Within the last week or so there was a great op ed piece in Newsday about going away to college for the first time. (I must confess that I would very much like to cite the author, but unfortunately I failed to save the article on my Ipad and was unsuccessful in looking it up.) The man who wrote it was a Catholic from Seaford and talked about all the preparations that were being made for their son s departure to college. He mentioned how the time had passed so quickly since his little boy first entered Catholic school. You got the idea that he had tremendous faith in his son and was very proud of him. You could tell that he and his wife would miss him a lot. Of course, that same scenario is taking place in our own parish and all over. Parents are getting ready for the big goodbye and the kids are anxiously looking forward to a totally new experience with new friends and new freedom. The parents probably won t show their tears and the kids won t talk too much about their fears and anxieties about entering a totally new situation. There even may be a little tension in the house during these last few days. My father used to say: The trouble with youth is that it is wasted on the young. I think he meant that by the mere fact of being young and inexperienced, you don t understand a lot of things and you fail to appreciate a great deal. One of the things that kids sometimes overlook is the almost infinite depth of love their parents have for them. Only as they get older will they understand. College students have responsibilities to their parents. On a most elementary level, they should call the folks who miss them so much at home frequently and regularly. Your parents want to know how you re doing and that things are ok. Believe it or not, the main purpose of college is education and study. Parents are putting a great deal into these four years and you should do the same by studying and having the maturity to really work. Do not procrastinate those term papers will not get done by themselves. College is not high school where you may have had it a bit easier. The professors mean business! Deadlines are meant to be observed they are not simply suggestions. You will be making new friends some of them will probably be lifelong friends. Make good ones-people of honesty, integrity and loyalty with genuine values. You will be making the most serious of decisions during these four years make prudent and sensible judgments and never be distracted by nonsense.

4 I hope that you will join a Campus Ministry Program at your college. They are present at almost every college and university whether Catholic or non-catholic. Campus Ministry is a fantastic place to meet people with whom you may share your faith and practice it with them. It is also provides an opportunity to do work and become involved in service to the poor and underprivileged. A number of St. Aidan parishioners have gone on mission trips to foreign countries and some of our high school students have done mission work right here in our own diocese and other places in the United States. When your folks finally say good bye, know that you may be away from home, but you will always be in their hearts and always and everywhere on their minds. Never forget how much they love you. In Jesus and Mary, In today s readings, St. Paul reminds the Romans-and us-that all things come from God: For from Him and through Him all things are. Good stewards understand that all is a gift and share generously the gift of time, talent and treasure with which they ve been blessed. STEWARDSHIP 08/18/13 $23,992 08/17/14 $21,361 (-13.19%) ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY 08/15/13 $ 8,049 08/15/14 $ 6,987 (-10.97%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. SUMMER RAFFLE WINNERS 1st Prize $1,500 Winners - Carol Dowd & John B. Kiernan 2nd Prize $500 Winners - Robert & Marie McLaughlin & Eileen Mehldeau 3rd Prize $250 Winners - Michael Harrison, Veronica Filippone & Mary McNulty Congratulations to all! FEAST OF ST. AIDAN THREE DAY NOVENA There will be a three day Novena in honor of the Feast of St. Aidan. The novena will begin on August 28th and end on August 30th after the 9:00 AM Mass in church.

5 THANK YOU My sincere thanks to all Priests, Deacons, Drago Bubalo, Cantors, Choirs, Ushers, Rosary Altar Society, Altar Servers, Holy Name Society, Maintenance, Rectory Staff, Parishioners and everyone who attended and volunteered their help for the beautiful funeral liturgies and reception for Monsignor Kirwin. It was overwhelming to see the outpouring of love and respect that was displayed as we said farewell to a former Pastor. I am truly grateful for all of you. There is no place like St. Aidans! Are you or someone you know seeking to complete the sacraments? Do you know someone that wishes to join the Catholic Church? You are invited to meet the RCIA Team! Come and explore your needs and hopes in a prayerful way. Ask a friend that might be seeking a faith, a way to get closer to Jesus. Spend an hour with the RCIA Team (Right of Christian Initiation for Adults.) Talk about what you desire at this time of your life, perhaps what Jesus is calling you to. You or your friend will not make any commitments, just conversation and questions about how we can help you. Welcome to all! When: Tuesday, September 9th Where: The Finamore Center (across from the church) Time: 7:30 PM ST. AIDAN SCHOOL JUST WE TWO St. Aidan School will host a weekly Just We Two program for children between the ages of two and three years accompanied by his/her parent or caregiver. 6 THE PORTRAIT The portrait of Msgr. Robert Kirwin has received much interest and recognition over the past few weeks since he passed away. The painting was done by my father, Donald J. McPartlan, who admired Msgr. Kirwin very much and wanted to honor him in the best way he knew how. He had several sessions with Msgr. Kirwin and met him for lunch a few times to discuss how he would portray him. It was painted just a few years ago and Msgr. wanted the beautiful stained glass windows behind him to depict the holy places he visited instead of the windows of St Aidan's. My father was a member of St Aidan's for the past 56 years and was a man of his faith. He shared his artistic skills with many people in the parish, especially those who were unable to leave their homes due to medical problems. My Dad passed away just one month ago, on July 9th, but would have been so proud to know that this painting, one of his most cherished, brought such happiness to Msgr. Kirwin and others in the parish. Kathleen McPartlan Keenan BEREAVEMENT GROUP Coping with Grief: A Difficult But Important Journey When a loved one dies, a period of grief usually follows. It is almost impossible for humans to experience loss without feeling some kind of grief. Grief can be painful, confusing and overwhelming. To share with others who are experiencing what you are experiencing can be supportive and healing. A Bereavement Group for people whose loved one has died (parent, spouse, sibling or friend) will be held in the Peter & Paul Room of the Finamore Parish Center by trained Bereavement Facilitators. TUESDAYS: 9:45 AM September 9 th, 16 th, 23 rd & 30 th October 7 th & 14 th THURSDAYS: 7:15 PM September 11 th, 18 th, 25 th October 2 nd, 9 th, & 16 th COPING WITH THE HOLIDAYS November 13 th Please call the Parish Social Ministry office at (516) x9408 to register. 8 Catholics for Freedom of Religion Preserving Freedom for All Being Catholic is no longer a spectator sport To preserve religious freedom we must understand it. Freedom of Religion, the gift of God to each man, is guaranteed to Americans by the 1 st Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Freedom of religion insures that our beliefs and morals can guide our private and our public lives. Denials of freedom of religion continue: Nurse in Florida not hired because of her pro-life beliefs. Virginia High School bans students from posting the Ten Commandments to their lockers. A university rules against wearing a cross necklace. We also need to be in prayer and fasting for our fellow Christians who are being persecuted in Iraq, Nigeria and many other places. They have lost their religious freedom and their lives. Ask your family and friends to join with you in prayer. The next meeting of CFFR is scheduled for Wednesday, September 17 th at 7:30 PM in the St. Aidan Convent Community Room. Please note day and room change. VIRTUS TRAINING CLASS There will be a Virtus training class here at St. Aidan Parish on Saturday, September 13th at 9:00 AM in the Finamore Parish Center. 14 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Last week I was in the church replenishing our CD kiosks with new titles and a parishioner stopped to ask me a question. One thing led to another and we tried to reflect on what Being Holy meant and what it is. What do holy women and men do? They begin by not feeling holy. Holiness is a form of humility where we receive rather than achieve. It is good to read about the old and the modern saints, but it is not good to envy or compare and do what they did in order to feel loved by God. Real holiness is being who we are, is real-sizing ourselves, and not size up with others. Jesus was who He was and is. Holiness begins with listening humbly to who God says we are and not trying to be someone else. If we want to know who we are and where we are with God, and God is not telling us, it is because believing is more precious than achieving. After all this we felt somehow holy but I would like to invite all of you to come to the new Bible Study which I am giving here in our parish. We will study St. Paul s letters. Together we will discover the beauty, truth and riches of our Catholic Faith through the Sacred Scriptures, and we will deepen our Bible knowledge. It is only two hours a week, but two important hours! This week we have new CDs. From Atheism to Catholicism by Jennifer Fulwiler where she recalls her spiritual journey, one which ultimately led her to enter the Catholic Church after living as an atheist. Discerning God s Will by Father Larry Richards, who dwells into the process of discernment, encourages us to dedicate ourselves to living the life that God has planned for us. I would like to ask you for prayers for our Pope Francis. He lost 3 members of his family in a car accident. It happened after he was back from his trip to So. Korea, where more than one million people attended his Mass on the last day of his trip. This in a country with only 8% of practicing Catholics! Again I ask of you to find ways to give our CDs to people who are away or not practicing. This is the best way to evangelize! Those souls will know the beauty of Our Lord love! Toti Conforti
