3 November 8, 2015 HELPING YOUR DIVORCING CHILD It's a terrible thing. You love your child so much and all you want is for him or her to be a happy and successful adult. And then it happens. Maybe you had an inkling that things were not going that well or it may come as an absolute surprise. Your married son or daughter tells you that the marriage is over and there is no hope for any sort of reconciliation. The marriage has collapsed and now there is the legal back and forth before the divorce. Your heart aches for your child and you are worried about your grandchildren and how this unfortunate turn of events will impact their young lives. You are beside yourself. What should you do? You feel so empty and powerless. This scenario is repeated day after day in parishes all over Long Island and everywhere else. It is messy, sad and complicated and does not admit of easy answers. Today I want to offer a few general suggestions to parents who are facing this very real and crushing problem. Here are some of them: 1. Do not preach--instead pray insistently for your adult child and his or her family. There are sometimes changes of heart that occur in even the most challenging of situations. (Friends of mine divorced and within a few years were reunited and are very happy today.) 2. Do not judge. Christ Himself gave us some very wise advice about our propensity for judging: "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. (Matt. 7:1) Even though you think you know the whole situation, you don't. You may be right; you may be wrong; the whole situation may be far more complicated than you imagine. 3. Do not worry about what other members of the family or gossipy relatives may have to say. They should have the charity, kindness and common sense to keep their mouths shut. Any judgmental commentary is really out of order. There are, for example, people who brag that they have never had a divorce in their family. Do not be at all concerned about their opinion. Their unwelcome talk is only a sign of a genuine lack of charity and lack of common sense. 4. Be enormously supportive of your child who is now going through the most difficult and challenging crisis of life. Always be available to listen and sympathize. Be as helpful as you can be, but realize the couple has to solve their own problems. You cannot make decisions for them. 5. Be especially attentive to the children of the marriage. Beware of acting as judge and jury and discussing or criticizing the failures of either parent, no matter how egregious those failings may be. In all probability you do not know the

4 whole story and, even if you did, you need not give your opinion. There is already enough sadness in the lives of the children this sadness does not need to be made worse. It is very difficult for parents to see their adult children hurting and to be unable to make everything better. Nevertheless, they can have open hearts and open arms to support their adult child in the midst of trouble. That is a great way of imitating Christ. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK & DECEASED SICK: Christine Schifaudo, Christine Lucivero, Cecilia Han, Geraldo Peixoto, Kimberly Holmes, Father Brian Dalton, Stacy Test, Owen Hogan, John Moore, Rita Amendola, Diana Coscia, Virginia Fallon, Barney Rinaldi, Brian Hoffarth, C-el Perdy, Carolyn Hayes, Marie McLaughlin, Joann McDermott, Judy Eberson-Kostovik, Corinne Capozzi, Mary Price, Mary Kingston, Dolores Donato, Martha & John Gibbons, Deacon Frank Love DECEASED: Margaret Monfort, Mary Eichinger and for those who have died serving our country. 5 As we come to the end of this year s Catholic Ministries Appeal, we are counting on you, members of our parish family, to participate in this important campaign for the ministries and programs of our church and for all who depend on them! To the 595 families who have already responded to our letters and announcements, I am so grateful for your generosity! To those who have not yet given, please prayerfully consider joining us today by making a gift. There are envelopes provided in your pews and in your envelope packs. As great as our parishes are - and they are all great - not one of them alone could ever accomplish ourselves the incredible things that we can accomplish together as a Diocese. Our parishes have Outreach Centers, but on our own we couldn t provide affordable housing for low-income families. Many of our parishes have Catholic elementary schools or middle schools, but don t have a high school. As a Diocese, we have three high schools. At our parish we have, now and in the past, many wonderful seminarians and priests. As a parish, we could never train them adequately but as a Diocese we have an exceptional Formation program. In other words, the Catholic Ministries Appeal reminds us that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves as individual parishes - we are part of the Roman Catholic Church of Long Island, and that institution accomplishes tremendous things for our people every day. My hope is that each family will extend its generosity and make a gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal. This Appeal is based on equal sacrifice, not equal giving. We cannot ask everyone to consider the same size gift, but we ask that your gift reflect how generous God has been to you with His gifts. Thank you.

10 LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR The Little Sisters of the Poor will be visiting our Parish next weekend, November 14th/15th. Many of you know the Little Sisters of the Poor in their ministry with the elderly poor. The Sisters depend on your generosity to help them provide a safe and comfortable home for the elderly men and women in the Queen of Peace Residence in Queens Village. There the residents are surrounded with love, respect, peace and security until death. The Sisters will be at the doors of the church as you leave Mass to receive your donations. Please be as generous as your means allow. CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAS COURT ST. AIDAN #1577 The monthly meeting will held on Tuesday, November 10th at 7:30 PM in Monsignor Kirwin Hall. New members are always welcome. LITURGY CORNER At the consecration, the priest both prays the words and performs the actions of Jesus at the Last Supper. He takes the bread in his hands, blesses it, breaks it, and gives it to us, just as Jesus did with the apostles. There are four actions, take, bless, break, give. They are traditional actions at formal Jewish feasts, so the apostles would have been familiar with them. But Jesus gives them far more significance when He, and the priest, adds, this is My Body. All these actions are critically important to the gift He gives us. We see Him in all of them. Recall how the disciples at Emmaus didn t realize with Whom they were speaking until they recognized Him in the breaking of the bread. We, too, recognize Him in these four actions. COAT DRIVE Keep the homeless warm this winter and contribute a used winter coat or jacket to a soup kitchen that serves 165,000 meals a year. Contact Tecky at (516) for details. 14 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "On Veterans Day, America pauses to honor every service member who has ever worn one of our Nation s uniforms... Each time our freedoms have come under assault, they have responded with resolve." Veterans Day Proclamation President Obama Religious expression under assault in the Military: Marine Lance Cpl. Monica Sterling taped a paper copy of bible verse, "No weapon formed against me shall prosper" from Isaiah 57:14, onto her desktop computer in Her staff sergeant ordered her to remove the verse. Sterling noted that other service members had personal items in their workspaces but was told, "I don't like the tone", (of the verse) by her supervisor. Sterling said she believed it was her First Amendment right to post a Bible verse and declined to take it down. Soon after, Ms. Sterling was court-martialed, convicted, given a bad conduct discharge, and reduced in rank. Liberty Institute is appealing her case to the highest military court in America, asking them to rule that the lower court should have applied the "Religious Freedom Restoration Act" (RFRA) to Sterling's case, protecting her right to post a Bible verse as a form of religious exercise. "Our Marines give up many freedoms when serving, but religious freedom is never one of them," said Liberty Institute Counsel, Michael Berry. (militarytimes.com, 5/27/15; libertyinstitute.org, 5/2015) * A Navy chaplain accused of failing to show "tolerance and respect" toward gay sailors has been cleared of all wrongdoing and will not be removed from the military. Chaplain Wes Modder, a highly decorated veteran who once ministered to an elite Navy SEAL unit, was removed from his job after being falsely accused by a gay officer. "I believe some of what the lieutenant has alleged could constitute a military crime - false statements... in an attempt to get the chaplain punished," said attorney Michael Berry. Liberty Institute President Kelly Shackelford commended the Navy for exonerating Chaplain Modder and called it a victory for religious liberty. (libertyinstitute.org; foxnews.com, 9/4/15) "Let the pulpit resound with the doctrine and sentiments of religious liberty. Let us hear of the dignity of man's nature and the noble rank he holds among the works of God." John Adams, Founding Father, 1765 Events: *Wednesday, November 11th 7:30 PM Corpus Christi/St. Aidan CFFR meeting in the Convent. All are welcome! * Wednesday, November 18th, 7:00-9:00 PM, Thomas Renker, Esq. & Barbara Samuells, CFFR President, will speak about denials of religious freedom in America, Our Lady of Victory School - Memorial Hall, 2 Bellmore St., Floral Park, NY

15 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Soon we will start the Year of Mercy which our Pope Francis will open on December 8 th, and I believe we should know all about Mercy and the implications in our spiritual life. Francis has given us a beautiful meditation on the meaning and the calling of mercy. Mercy also describes the Pope pontificate, and he calls us and the entire Church to be witness to a special program of life. He invites us to convert and renew our faith during this special time. He opens the document telling us Jesus Christ is the face of the Father s mercy. Mercy is a description of God s nature, not only compassion and generosity but to be merciful as your Father is merciful is to participate in the way God loves his creatures. Mercy is not an abstract idea; it is living and visible in Jesus. Mercy is a person. To approach mercy we need to approach a person, Jesus Christ. It is the only way we will know what mercy is, with our eyes fixed on Jesus we will experience the love of the Holy Trinity and as John tells us in 1John 4:8 God is love God desires our well-being; he wants us to be happy and peaceful. God wants us to experience the fullness that is in God s mercy. Touched by God s presence we can be generous to others as God has been immensely generous to us, been an instrument of mercy to those amidst the suffering of our time; to overcome our usual indifference, reaching out to those who are in need of help; to restore dignity to all those from whom it has been robbed. What Pope Francis desires for this upcoming jubilee is that by hearing the Word of God, the Church may be called to witness the mercy amidst the confusion and suffering of our time. This week I ask you to look into the three VCRs that we have in our kiosk. They are only one more dollar, instead of $3.00 for the CDs, they are $4.00 each; one is Beloved, Finding Happiness in Marriage a guide how to communicate and how to respond when we are hurt. How both spouses can give of themselves in married life. Another one is True Strength and True Beauty What makes men and women different? We must learn to be the woman or man that God has created us to be. It will help young women and men understand the gift of their sexuality. Another is Mary and the Saints. Learn what Catholics really believe about Mary and why. A rich understanding of our Faith. I suggest that you also use these DVDs as gifts, to newly married couples, to young people going to college or in college, to friends not practicing our Faith. You may or may not see the effect of these tapes, but I am sure the Holy Spirit will work in their souls! God bless you! Toti Conforti PEANUT BUTTER GANG Join us on Saturday, November 14 th at 8:15 AM in the East Campus cafeteria to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the hungry and homeless on Long Island. 25 PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY As Pope Benedict XVI said in his Encyclical, Deus Caritas Est, Everything has its origin in God's love, everything is shaped by it, everything is directed towards it. Love is God's greatest gift to humanity; it is his promise and our hope. FOOD PANTRY - I believe there may have been some confusion regarding our monthly food drive. Many thought it was this past weekend and dropped off food in the vestibule of church. The food drive usually takes place the first full weekend of the month. Since a lot of food was received this past weekend, there will be no food drive on November 7 th & 8 th. Thank you for all the food donations collected! ITEMS THAT ARE NEEDED: applesauce, coffee, apple cider, Ziploc bags and sponges THANKSGIVING We are getting ready for the holiday and if you would like to help our families by providing food or gift cards for their thanksgiving dinner, kindly bring all donations to the parish social ministry office by November 17 th. SHARING OUR TREASURES Sharing Our Treasures will begin the 1 st weekend of Advent, Saturday, November 28 th & 29 th. For more information, please consult the bulletin. I have received a telephone call from one of our volunteers who works with the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal and they are looking to help the homeless keep warm this Winter by providing hats, gloves and mittens. If you would like to help, kindly drop off these items to our parish social ministry office by Friday, November 13 th. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Our Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at 9:45 AM in the Peter and Paul Room of the Finamore Center to knit or crochet prayer shawls or lap blankets for our sick and homebound parishioners. New members are always welcome. You need not know how to knit or crochet. We have talented parishioners who can teach you. The prayer shawl committee will meet again on Monday, November 9 th. If you have some wool to donate to this ministry, please bring it to the Parish Social Ministry Office. Please call our office if you would like to receive a blessed prayer shawl or if you know of someone who would like one. If you have any questions, please call Parish Social Ministry (516) x9410. PLEASE NOTE: The Parish Social Ministry will be closed on Veteran s Day, November 11 th. The Parish Social Ministry is open Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM 3:00 PM. Please use the Finamore Parish Center entrance (across from the church on Willis Avenue).
