3 March 24, 2013 EVERY SINGLE SOLITARY LIGHT I really hope that I am successful with this letter. No, it is not an appeal for money or for the missions, and it is addressed to a special group of people people who have given up on confession. They simply don t go any more. For a combination of reasons they have decided that confession just doesn t do it for them. Some feel that they really don t do anything wrong and are just as good without confession and others are maybe a bit more realistic and concede that the reason they stay away is fear and embarrassment. There is something that they just don t feel comfortable confessing and they feel it s much better to just leave it that way. These people (many of them very good people) are haunted and paralyzed by the fear that the priest will criticize them, humiliate them, and in general make them feel bad. They are overwhelmed by dread it s worse than fear of going to the dentist! I felt the same way about a very minor operation I had twelve years ago. I did everything I could to put it off and finally the day of reckoning came. Fortunately the anesthesia was a spinal and I was awake during the whole thing and spent a good deal of time trying to find out what parish the anesthetist was in. He was somewhat cagey and when the whole thing was over he came to my room and told me he was not a Catholic. He said he didn t have the heart to tell me. As I was being wheeled down the hall after the operation, I thought what a dope I was and how tremendously easy it was. Over twenty years ago a fantastic catechetical film was made it was about fifteen minutes but it was wonderful. It went like this: A young man about 19 or so had a terrible fight with his father. They both said things they didn t mean and he left home in a fit of anger. After a while he was lonely and terribly homesick and wrote his father a letter asking him to take him back. He said that the sign the father was willing to forgive would be a lamp on in the living room. He said that if he came by on the bus and there was no light, he would just keep on going. The boy approaching his home was frozen with fear. He dreaded the possibility that his father would be a hardliner and not forgive. He was so anxious he couldn t even look as the bus rounded the corner the kindly bus driver said he would be on the watch to see if the light was on. Not only was that lamp on, every single solitary light in the house was on and the trees were festooned with lights. The father didn t want there to be any mistake.

4 That s exactly the way God is with us. He is always waiting with open arms and has all the lights in house on for each one of us. He is waiting for us to turn the corner and run into His Heart. That is the kind of God we believe in. Last Sunday in his first Angelus message the Holy Father, Pope Francis said it so beautifully: God never, ever gets tired of forgiving us. That says it all perfectly. This coming Monday is Reconciliation Monday in our Diocese, the Brooklyn Diocese and the Archdiocese of New York. In every parish church, confessions will be heard from 3:00 to 9:00 PM. Here at St. Aidan we ll even have confessions during the 5:30 PM Mass and I will be there the entire six hours and there will be other priests during confession time. Please, please come! The lights are on! In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. 6 SCHOOL STATIONS OF THE CROSS The entire parish is invited to attend a special Stations of the Cross that will take place on Wednesday, March 27th at 1:00 PM in Msgr. Kirwin Hall. This is a very moving reenactment of the Stations of the Cross presented by the 4th grade classes. The 4th graders have been presenting this very touching service for many years and would like to share it with the parish community. GYMNASIUM CLOSED Please be advised that the Gymnasium will be closed for all activities from Wednesday, March 27th-Monday, April 1st. WHY HAVE THEY COVERED THE CRUCIFIX AND STATUES OF JOSEPH AND MARY? You have probably noticed that the crucifix and the statues of Mary, Joseph and St.Theresa are covered in purple cloth. This is an ancient custom and was never abolished or discontinued in the rubrics or liturgical rules of the Catholic Church. Monsignor McDonald has decided to reinstate this ancient and praiseworthy custom. Until recent times it was customary to veil prominent statues and crucifixes in the church with a purple cloth as a sign of sadness and mourning. In some churches, beginning around the year 900, one large cloth was hung between the people and the altar from the beginning of Lent. This was done to hide the heavenly glory depicted by statues of saints and crosses with a figure of the triumphant Christ. This custom came to symbolize the exclusion of all sinners from the altar just as public sinners were excluded. Since the 1600 s, this veiling was limited to Passiontide, beginning on the fifth Sunday of Lent, originally called Passions Sunday. On that Sunday, the final words of the gospel were At that they picked up rocks to throw at Jesus, but he hid himself and slipped out of the temple precincts. (John 8: 59). Taken from Catholic Customs and Traditions, by Greg Dues. VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED Volunteers are needed to help decorate the church for Easter on Holy Saturday, March 30th immediately following the 9:00 AM Morning Prayer (provided there is no funeral service.) No experience necessary. All parishioners are welcome to come and help make our church look beautiful. AN EASTER TRADITION The Blessing of Foods for the Easter Table We invite you and your family to take part in a very old custom of blessing the foods to be eaten at your Easter table. These would be blessed by the parish priest as a reminder of the new life that we have in the Risen Christ. This traditional blessing of Easter baskets will take place in our parish on Holy Saturday, March 30th promptly at 12:00 PM. Please come to the church with your basket of holiday goodies! Wielkie Post!

9 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA On Palm Sunday we celebrate the first joy of the season, Our Lord s triumphant entrance into Jerusalem where He was welcomed by crowds worshiping him and laying down palms branches in His path. It also marks the beginning of Holy Week, the greatest tragedy and sorrow of the year! The week in which we celebrate the mystery of our salvation through Christ s Death and Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Holy Thursday is the most profound celebration of the institution of the Eucharist, which is the Sacrament of Sacraments (the Great Sacrament). On Good Friday we try to understand at what cost Christ has won our redemption and we shall unite ourselves to our Savior entering into His Passion as the sign of our salvation. This week we have wonderful new CDs which will enrich your understanding of our Faith. The Second Greatest Story Ever Told by Father M. Gaitley is a CD you will want to hear, especially in anticipation of the Divine Mercy Sunday which is the Sunday after Easter. It is a powerful eye-opening account of God s divine mercy. From the Foundation of the World by Curtis Martin is a powerful and inspirational talk. He challenges us to examine what we believe. To have an intimate relationship with Jesus, to love God who has loved us from the foundation of the world. Pray like a Saint by Matthew Leonard, a must listen-to-talk for growing close to God. Practical steps to achieve union with God. Stop by our kiosk and pick up as many CDs as you wish, try to give them to people that need to listen to these talks, the Holy Spirit will guide you, and you would help to enrich our Church and save souls. 10 BEREAVEMENT GROUP Coping with Grief: A Difficult But Important Journey When a loved one dies, a period of grief usually follows. It is almost impossible for humans to experience loss without feeling some kind of grief. Grief can be painful, confusing and overwhelming. To share with others who are experiencing what you are experiencing can be supportive and healing. A Bereavement Group for people whose loved one has died (parent, spouse, sibling or friend) will be held in the Sts. Peter & Paul Room in Finamore Parish Center by trained Bereavement Facilitators. Tuesdays: 9:45 AM April 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th and May 7th Thursdays: 7:30 PM April 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, May 2nd and 9th Please call the Parish Social Ministry office at (516) x9408 to register. 11 FINANCIAL PLANNING MEETING Wednesday, April 17 th at 7:00 PM Msgr. Kirwin Hall SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE Studies have shown that at least 70% of the American population does not have a plan regarding their personal financial strategy for retirement income as well as an Estate Plan in the event of disability or death. Furthermore, unforeseen life altering events such as catastrophic illness, divorce and caring for aging parents can adversely affect the accumulation and distribution of assets resulting in a shortage of funds for savings, retirement planning and college funding. There are several questions we all ask ourselves from time to time regarding the present state of our financial affairs and the fact of the matter is that, while the clock is ticking, most people are procrastinating about the need to focus on the task at hand, How to secure our financial well-being in a financially insecure world. We need to be truthful to ourselves in answering the questions that lie at the very core of a well-based plan: - Are you risking your principal and jeopardizing your financial future with positions in the market that are complicated and out of your control? - Is denial a retirement plan? - Are you waiting until your child s 17th birthday to start planning for college? - Does your retirement planning game need a second look? - Would you rather be in control of your financial future maintaining the values that are so important to you and your family? - Do you really understand that life insurance was designed in mind to financially protect your loved ones, whose lives are completely dependent on you, in the event of your death? Estate planning, incorporating financial strategies, is the process of mapping out how you want your personal and financial matters to be handled during periods of incapacity, disability or at your death. An Estate Plan should be carefully implemented with the assistance of an Estate Planning attorney-one who specializes in wills and trusts with an understanding of the ever-changing IRS codes that apply to the structuring of the documents. Everyone over the age of 18 needs an Estate Plan as it is not just for the wealthy. In fact, Estate planning can be more important for the smaller estate to assure that your loved ones will be provided for and not overly burdened by personal and financial matters during a time of crisis. You ll spend a lifetime accumulating your wealth and building a legacy that has the potential to grow for generations that follow. Exercise the due diligence necessary by implementing plans to protect the financial well-being of your family. One single unforeseen event could devastate your family s future. Plan ahead and have the peace of mind knowing that you ve secured yourself and your loved ones.

12 In the Gospel story of the first Palm Sunday we hear that the owners of the ass had only to be told, The Master has need of it, to give the animal gladly. Do I give as readily to the Lord s work? STEWARDSHIP COLLECTION 03/18/12 $25,343 03/17/13 $28,078 (+10.79%) The collection on Good Friday is for the Holy Land. Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish! GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION On Good Friday, March 29th, our parish will take up the annual Good Friday collection for the Holy Land. Each day the news reminds us of the violence and instability plaguing the Middle East, but we rarely hear of the shrinking Christian community there, a community that struggles to remain in the land of Christ s birth, death and resurrection. Please help support our brothers and sister in the Holy Land by giving to the Good Friday collection. This Pontifical collection allows the Franciscans and others to continue caring for Christianity s holiest sites and for God s people in the Holy Land. Please be generous. SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH 2013 Time is one of our most priceless possessions of which we never seem to have enough of. This Lent why don t we give the Lord what we value so much? Every day try to worship Him at Mass, use some time to read Scripture and meditate on what you are reading, attend on Friday evenings the devotion to the Stations of the Cross at our parish, and many more ways to spend time with our Savior. We shall give Him some of our time; nothing is more worthwhile than to strengthen our relationship with our Lord. And then go to our Mother and stay with her at the foot of the Cross, she will help you to draw closer to Christ. Share your reactions and feedback at pastoralcouncil@staidanparish.org or call (516) x9592. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish.
