3 JUNE 26, 2016 FAMILY POLITICS Family politics can be a real pain in the neck and can cause a great deal of unhappiness and even destroy a marriage. Take a few common examples. There's going to be a wedding. Now there is an almost unparalleled opportunity for trouble. There can be disputes about the guest list, members of the wedding party, the venue, the shower, the cost and who should pay--and maybe even where the ceremony should take place. Worse still is the problem of some member of either family not approving of the bride and groom and being quite vocal about his or her opinion. Such hurts are not easily forgotten. Then there are disputes about the name of the child and even who the godparents should be. Sometimes family members take their own opinion so seriously that they cause the happy new parents anxiety. Parents are caught between a rock and a hard place trying to please everybody. And then there's always Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving and who is going where and when. (One of the advantages of being a priest is that you can always be busy or on duty.) In addition there are family business problems and the perennial difficulty of dominant family members who really like being in control of other peoples' lives. Most of these conflicts are not caused by mean spirited people, but by people who really want the best for their children and family members. Parents deeply love their children and many find it hard to let go especially when there are reservations about the prospective marriage partner. Older people sometimes want to be the matriarch or patriarch of the family and, to a certain extent, call the shots. Siblings often have their ideas about the marriage of a brother or sister and then there are aunts, uncles, and cousins who are not without their own opinions. You often hear me speak about how children (and that includes adult children) should love and respect their parents. You can never thank your parents enough for all they have done for you. On the other hand, as an adult you cannot let your parents or other well meaning family members dominate your life and your marriage. You have to have the maturity with kindness, charity and understanding to stand on your own two feet and live your own life. It's your marriage and not theirs; it's your life and you are the responsible agent. I urge young people to listen with an open heart to the advice of their parents and other family members but in the end to make their own principled decisions in accord with God's law and common sense.

4 Good advice or counsel is a wonderful gift and is to be treasured. Pressure, coercion or arm twisting is not in the same category at all and is to be avoided. We may not always agree with the way people run their lives, but the reality is that God Himself has given them free will and we should respect that. Sometimes people have to learn by experience and it often is the best teacher. Like everybody else, I have learned by my mistakes. Let others learn by theirs. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. Mc Donald THANK YOU FATHER MICHAEL EDATHIL On Wednesday, June 29th, Father Michael leaves us. This is a very sad day for me personally and for our parish. For the past three years he has given his energy, love and devotion totally to the people of St. Aidan. His zeal, kindness and availability are beyond measure. I join with you in expressing my thanks and admiration for all he has done for us. He could not have done any more than he did. May Jesus and Mary bless him richly as he begins the next stage of his priestly life. PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK & DECEASED SICK: Christine Schifaudo, Christine Lucivero, Cecilia Han, Geraldo Peixoto, Kimberly Holmes, Father Brian Dalton, Stacy Test, Owen Hogan, Kathleen Gattis, Joseph Fitzgerald, Rita Amendola, Virginia Fallon, Joyce French, Barney Rinaldi, Brian Hoffarth, Mary Price, Marie McLaughlin, Judy Eberso-Kostovick, Chris Lynch, Terence Simblitt, Ana Bubalo, Michael Vladich, Terry Laughlin, Anthony Rosario, Deacon Frank Love, Joann McDermott, Kimberly Kurz, Catherine Reardon, Bob Hesse, Margaret Cacioppo, Maureen Ostrowski, Karen Canner, Carter Smith, Carol Bongiorno, Robert Jean-Bart DECEASED: Dominick Bellizzi, Joseph Cepelak, Joseph Cecere, Samir Karam for the victim of the Orlando shooting and for all those who have died serving our country. 8 ST. AIDAN PARISH RELIGIOUS FREEDOM-ART WORK The 2016 Religious Freedom Art winners are: Emma Ruane, grade 6, St. Aidan School Gabrielle Behette, grade 8, St. Aidan School Jillian Parrino, grade 7, Religious Education St. Aidan They will receive their awards at the Religious Freedom Rally on June 27th at St. John the Baptist High School. Thank you to all the students who participated in the contest. Their Art Work will be on display in the vestibule of the church this week end. LITURGY CORNER The fourth Spiritual Work of Mercy is to Comfort the Sorrowful. The best advice I ever saw for comforting someone was just be there. We may feel awkward about this, but just your presence can make a big difference in someone s grief. Don t think of what you need to say, but really listen the person who is suffering. Then you can say something if needed. Read the New Testament to see how Jesus did this. He is our ultimate Teacher. Then you can offer words of encouragement to those who seem discouraged, be present to those who are struggling or in emotional pain or despair, or offer sympathy to those who are grieving. Just remember that being there is the most important thing. If you re not truly present, the words won t matter. THANK YOU ALTAR SERVERS In appreciation for all of your dedication to our parish, all altar servers are invited to the AMF Sheridan Bowling Lanes, 199 E. Jericho Turnpike, Mineola on Wednesday, July 20th from 4:00-6:00 PM for bowling, food and soda are included. If you would like to attend please call Father Jeff at (516) x9105.

9 2016 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL ONE FAITH, FAMILY, COMMUNITY Rev. Steve Maddaloni Rev. Jiha Lim Rev. Daniel Rivera Catholics on Long Island have prayed the Harvest Master to send more labourers into the Harvest. He has heard our prayers and on June 25, 2016 He answered them. Let us give thanks to the Lord! THANKS TO YOUR SUPPORT THEY ARE COMING TO A PARISH NEAR YOU!

10 2016 Catholic Ministries Appeal One Faith, Family, Community Put on Christ! in your life and you will find a friend in whom you can always trust; put on Christ and you will see the wings of hope spreading and letting you journey with joy towards the future. - Pope Francis Dear Parishioners: As Catholics, we all hold dear the responsibility of bringing our young people into our family of faith and guiding them on a lifelong journey with Christ. One opportunity to nurture their faith is by supporting the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Every day, young people on our college campuses are actively committing to their faith and living lives filled with joyful service. Consider Susan, a student at Stony Brook University, who became involved in Campus Ministry immediately following the start of her freshman year. Having a family of friends here at Stony Brook University is so important to me. I grew up in a very small town and coming to a big school I didn t get that sense of community anywhere else but in Campus Ministry. God is first and being surrounded by people that feel the same way encourages you and helps you through all your troubles. More than 3,000 young people a month participate in Campus Ministry Programs in our Diocese. The Catholic Ministries Appeal is also important for so many other ministries and programs that involve our children. Are you aware that collectively parish-based religious education programs serve more than 110,000 of our young people in public schools? Similarly, youth and young adult ministry programs serve more than 5,000 each month. Your support helps to inspire young adults to journey together as they continue to find Christ in their lives. Please know that I thank you most sincerely for your consideration of this special request to make a gift to the 2016 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Please know that no gift is too small and every gift makes a difference in the lives of our young people - the now and the future of our Catholic Church. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald Pastor

15 CHARITABLE RECORDS SET The Knights of Columbus set a new all-time record last year for charitable donations and service hours with $ 175,079,192 in donations and more than 73.4 million hours of service. The numbers were announced at the closing session of the annual Organizational Meeting of State Deputies in New Haven.
