3 JANUARY 17, 2016 DON T GIVE UP! Wednesday evening I went to Kings Park High School for a very special event in which 41 adults received their high school diplomas. One of them was a young man I had converted in Dix Hills about 12 years ago and I wanted to be there for him. Happily enough, several other parishioners were there to support him. It was a very moving but simple ceremony and there was great enthusiasm. The speeches were short and to the point always a plus, especially for homilies! Three of the graduates spoke about their lives and the road that led to the diploma. As you listened to them you were terribly impressed by their courage and their ability to overcome various obstacles. One virtue that they all possessed was that of perseverance they did not give up in the face of discouragement and even failure. They went on and kept trying. That's something all of us need to do in the spiritual life and ordinary human life we have to keep going. We cannot dwell on the past, but must look forward to the future. One of my all time favorite Scripture quotes is from St. Paul's Letter to the Philippians: "I do not consider that I have made it on my own: but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." (Phil 3: 13-14) There was a tremendous quote in the program from Thomas Edison that I really want to share with you. It gives us all a lot to think about: "Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." An awful lot of us are much too hard on ourselves and easily get overwhelmed and discouraged. For some its school or business for others its marriage. It's just so easy to give up. I imagine that many of the 41 who got their high school diplomas last Wednesday almost gave up. They felt they just couldn't do it. The amazing and wonderful thing is that they went straight ahead. We can learn by their example. One of the most successful books ever published or written in the United States was The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale. Printed over sixty years ago, that book (perhaps the daddy of self-help books, right up with Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People,) is still selling today in e-books, recordings and printed versions all over the place. What is not so

4 generally known is that Dr. Peale was totally discouraged when his book had been rejected by publisher after publisher. He was about to throw it away when his wife, Ruth, told him that she wanted to send it to one more publisher. The rest is history. It has been a smashing success for well over half a century. It could have been otherwise, but his wife had the sense not to give up. I congratulate the 41 new graduates and I especially applaud all those who encouraged them and never gave up on them even if success took, in some cases, more than a decade. Jesus is very pleased with those who preach a living gospel of encouragement. Be one of those people. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald, Pastor In today s reading, St. Paul tells the Corinthians (and us) that all of our gifts are from God and they are given, not for us alone, but for the common good. The generosity of God knows no limits-the miracle at Cana reminds us that whenever we faithfully do as God asks, He can change our gifts of water into wine. For more information please call Father Damian Halligan in the Rectory office. LITURGY CORNER Why does the priest kiss the altar? This question came from our RCIA team, but it is something we all need to understand. From the earliest times a kiss was not only a token of love, but also a symbol of profound respect. It is in accordance with this symbolism, so universally understood and practiced, that the Church enjoins the kissing of many holy objects, e.g. relics, the book of the Gospels, the cross, the hands of the clergy. In particular, the altar is repeatedly kissed by the celebrant in the course of the Mass, and this practice is of very ancient date. The earliest documents mention it twice, first, when the celebrant ascends to the altar at the beginning, and second, at the Offertory, when he comes again to the altar from his chair. Over the years, many more instances of kissing the altar have been added to the Mass. Partly, this is because every altar contains a relics in its structure, but more so, because through traditions, study of the scriptures, and writings from the Church fathers, the altar is seen as representing Christ Himself. So it is primarily out of respect for Him that the priest kisses the altar. If you have any questions for the Liturgy Corner, please send them to the Parish office and we will try to answer them CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL This year s appeal is almost over. 9 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "While Americans presume that the Constitution guarantees their rights, in practice our rights survive or disappear based on how firmly we defend them." Archbishop Charles Chaput, Philadelphia Supreme Court & Little Sisters of the Poor: Please support the Little Sisters with your prayers as they await the Supreme Court decision in June as to whether they will be free to practice their religious beliefs or forced to pay crippling fines to the IRS. On Jan. 4, 2016, the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty urged the Supreme Court to protect the Little Sisters from the $70 million in government fines for refusing to violate their faith. This is the second time the Sisters have been forced to ask the Supreme Court for protection from the government s efforts to make them provide contraception, abortion drugs, and sterilization. "The Little Sisters should not have to fight their own government to get an exemption it has already given to thousands of other employers including big companies like Exxon and Pepsi Cola Bottling Co.," said Becket Fund Senior Counsel. "It is ridiculous for the federal government to claim, in this day and age, that it can't figure out how to distribute contraceptives without involving nuns and their health plans." (becketfund.org; catholicnewslive.com, 1/6/16) Heavenly Father, We unite our prayers with the Little Sisters of the Poor in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome, this great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." 12 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Since we are in Ordinary Time for another five weeks, I believe it is a good time to reflect on the Holy Year of Mercy which began on December 8, 2015 and will end on November 20, I was reading about Pope Francis reasons for proclaiming a Year of Mercy and I felt inclined to share this with you. The Pope says: Jesus said he did not come for the healthy, but for the sick. For this reason we can say that mercy is God s identity card, God of Mercy, for me this really is the Lord s name The Church cannot close the door to anyone, but needs to embrace all and to tell people that God loves them. Humanity is wounded, humanity needs mercy and compassion. Even the Pope is a man who needs the mercy of God. This is what he says, words that, if we permit it, will allow our hearts to be touched; we will see that God never tires of reaching out to us. He is always ready to listen and to offer to us conversion of ways. That way we can be instruments of mercy because it was we who first received mercy from God. We are called to see around us the hurting ones, in our family, our friends, and not use indifference but let us reach out to them with our presence, our friendship, our understanding! In this Year of Mercy, we shall practice a few things; the seven Corporal Work of Mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothed the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. The seven Spiritual Works of Mercy: Counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, forgive offences, comfort afflicted, bear wrongs patiently, pray for the living and the dead. Another practice is a Pilgrimage to reach a Holy Door. There are opportunities to do from our parish. All these and more are a sign that we find mercy is a goal to be reached, as we embrace God s Mercy; we start to be merciful with others as the Father is with us! This Week we have new CDs in the kiosk that will help us to see how we can accomplish a Holy Year. Seven Secret of the Divine Mercy by V. Flynn, he explains how to respond to the call of Pope Francis to live lives Shaped by Mercy. Pray like a Saint by M. Leonard, prayer is the path to God; he tells us how we can obtain union with God with prayer in the midst of this busy world. Making Peace with People by Dr. Gregory Popcak, gives us insights on how to help us to work out difficult situations with the people in our life. And last, are two CDs about insights as how to pray the Rosary better: Praying the Rosary and The Holy Rosary and I would ask you to try to incorporate the Rosary into your daily devotions. Our Lady and Mother will intercede for all of your needs! Look over all the CDs, choose what you want to hear and some for a person the Holy Spirit directs you to give them to. You are accomplishing the work of Evangelization of the Church. God bless you abundantly. Toti Conforti

19 The IRA Charitable Rollover is back and is now permanent! What s called a rollover is actually a qualified charitable distribution that can be made to our Parish. If 1. You are at least 70 1/2 years old on the date you make your gift 2. Your IRA is a traditional or Roth 3. You don t exceed your personal maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable distributions You will not have to report your distribution as income. It will be free of federal and New York State income tax, and it will count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD). The best way for you to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a "qualified charitable distribution". In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple form. VERY IMPORTANT!! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive the money first then you ll be taxed on it like any other distribution. Example: Mrs. Connors, age 76, has $125,000 in a traditional IRA and would like to contribute $5,000 to her Parish in Upon hearing of the Charitable IRA Rollover opportunity, she directs the custodian of her IRA to transfer this amount not later than December 31, 2016 directly to the Parish as a 2016 gift. She will not be subject to income tax on her $5,000 qualified charitable distribution. This information is not intended and should not be construed as legal, tax or investment advice.
