One such tradition is the breaking of Oplatek or Christmas wafer. The wafer, which looks much like unconsecrated communion bread, is traditionally broken at grace before the Christmas Eve meal. If you are interested in making the tradition part of your Christmas celebration, please purchase an Oplatek at the Rectory office ($2.00 donation). If you have an hour of free time on Monday, December 23rd, please come to the church after the 12:15 PM Mass to lend a hand.

3 December 15, 2013 THE LAST ACCEPTABLE PREJUDICE Arthur Schlesinger,Jr, is a distinguished American historian who has written extensively and has been very involved in the American political scene. Some years ago he wrote that anti-catholicism is the last acceptable prejudice of the American people. We know from the media that a great number of Americans is very lacking in knowledge of history, particularly our own history. (During the Second World War, for example, a large percentage of Americans did not know what the Bill of Rights was.) It is not surprising that so many Catholics (and non-catholics as well) seem to have forgotten the difficulties of the Catholic Church in the early days of our country. They seem to have forgotten that it was necessary to found Maryland as a haven for Catholics because they were unwelcome in so many other places. They fail to remember how misunderstood Catholicism was even in the 1960 Presidential Election. Catholic teaching is a real puzzle for some. They just can t understand how we can be so behind the times. Imagine a Church that still rejects divorce and remarriage (as Christ did.) Of course, there can be times when a divorce may be sought for self-protection and absolutely intolerable circumstances. In those cases an annulment must be obtained before there can be a new marriage. Imagine a Church that teaches for two thousand years that abortion is a grave offense against the moral law even though contemporary society is accepting of this manifestly evil practice. There are others, Christians and non-christians who think the same way as we do, but we have many more institutions and that is the current problem. At the present time the Government wants Catholics to violate our consciences and go against the sacred teachings of our faith. The problem is we have so many institutions, schools, universities and hospitals as well as a multiplicity of charitable organizations. There is no institution like the Catholic Church in the United States. For example, one in every six persons in the United States who goes to the hospital is treated in a Catholic Hospital. If these hospitals were to close, it would be a tragedy. On the other hand, we cannot have Catholic hospitals that perform abortions and provide abortion causing drugs. Nor can we have

4 Catholic hospitals that provide immoral operations. The government unfortunately may sanction evil, but we will not. That is why this religious liberty question is of the utmost importance. We must be free to not only worship God but also to live our faith and not to be coerced into activities which are immoral and totally against Catholic teaching. A few weeks ago our bishops met in Baltimore and issued a statement on this pressing problem. They indicated that the government is seeking to impose a great burden and or ministries and, in a certain sense, is willing to curtail the many ministries of the Catholic Church. Such an attack on the Church is unjust, unwarranted and absolutely intolerable. It is an act of tyranny against the Church. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald STEWARDSHIP COLLECTION 12/09/12 $29,271 12/08/13 $28,673 (-2.04%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish! PLEASE PRAY SICK: Barbara Ueland, Christine Schifaudo, Peter F. SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER Finding the true meaning of Christmas: And that is not decking the halls, dashing through stores, making wish lists too long to check once, much less twice. When did Christmas get so complicated? It is time to rethink the way we celebrate and focus on the true meaning. Reach the sick, the lonely, the poor, the suffering children with our love that reflects God s love. Give to others what we wish for ourselves, and we embrace the true spirit of giving. Reach out to those in our family who are distant from us with a phone call, a note, a hug, putting beliefs into action. Share your reactions and feedback at pastoralcouncil@staidanparish.org or call (516) x9592. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish.

13 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA This Advent season when we prepare for the coming of Christ at Christmas, it should be a time for families to come together in prayer. However, it is easy to get distracted with all the decoration in the stores, the urge to buy presents earlier and earlier, tend to increase our anxiety. We get tired of Christmas by the time Christmas Day finally arrives! But we can slow down, celebrating Advent as it is meant to be celebrated! Then when Christmas arrives, we can greet Christ with joy. Why not add to your daily prayers a reading from Scripture for the Advent season. Most of the readings at this time come from the Old Testament book of the Prophet Isaiah, who, more than any other prophet, foretold the coming of Christ. When was the last time you went to Confession? Why not come back to this Sacrament as part of our Advent celebration? How often we offend God, all this collects in our heart and we must seek forgiveness from God. He is the only one to say I forgive you. And He does that in Confession, we must say I am sorry, and we will regain our peace. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, told the people in his weekly audience, Listen to the voice of the Lord: Let not the cry of the poor ever leave us indifferent, may the suffering of the sick and of those who are in need not find us inattentive, may the solitude of the elderly and the weakness of children move us, may every human life be loved and respected by all. What a profound way to celebrate the coming of Christ! This week we have informative new CDs: Signs of Life: Catholic Customs and Their Biblical Roots by Dr. Scott Hahn. He guides us to a deeper faith through the Old Testament historical roots that underlies Catholic beliefs and practices. Dr. Hahn clears up common misconceptions about specific liturgical rituals and objections about them. The Mass Comes Alive These are 2 CDs for kids ages 3-11 to help them learn and love their Faith, using prayer, faith filled stories and catchy songs. It teaches powerful lessons for living out their Faith every day. There two terrific CDs, ideal for Christmas gifts. I suggest using these CDs as Christmas gifts, it will serve two purposes: give what is important in the true spirit of Christmas and impart knowledge of our Faith to those that may not have it. Your contribution to this program also would help us to bring new tittles every week. Toti Conforti

SAINT WILLIAM THE ABBOT, Seaford, NY-will be holding it's second Candlelight Carol Sing on Wednesday, December 18th, 2013 beginning at 7:30 PM. A wonderful event sure to become a holiday family tradition, attendees participate in singing familiar Christmas favorites as well as being entertained with the sounds of beautiful music provided by professional musicians, handbells and a wonderful group of singers. A featured moment of the evening is the singing of the familiar "Silent Night" carol with the church illuminated only by candlelight. Arriving early is recommended. Those arriving early (on or before 7:00 PM) will enjoy warm cider or hot chocolate on the front plaza around a fire while a brass quintet serenades them. Admission is free, although freewill offerings are accepted. Please bring your family and friends for an unforgettable event. For more information please call our music office at (516) or visit THE CATHOLIC LEARNING CENTER-Professional therapy, provided by New York State licensed therapists, is available to our parish and 148 other parishes. This program, under the direction of Dr. George Giuliani, has been conducted in the Diocese for the past 40 years for the convenience of parishioners.
