3 August 23, 2015 COURAGE IN CRISIS Last Sunday morning driving to the Latin Mass I listened to In the Arena on WOR. This is the program of Msgr. Kieran Harrington, a priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn. It is always interesting, controversial and entertaining. Sunday was no exception. There was a spirited discussion of life issues. One of the guests was a charming young woman who is entering senior year of college. She came from a very Catholic family in Fort Worth, but there was not a lot of discussion of abortion and related issues. However, when she joined Campus Ministry she said she felt led by the Holy Spirit to do Pro-Life work and it changed her life. A writer for First Things magazine (a challenging journal of great merit) indicated that he had been raised in a very devout Evangelical home and the family was pro-life, but he did not get very involved in the issue when he was younger. The point made by both of these guests was that even in the very religious homes there is not a lot of talk about life issues. That is very understandable. People have their ordinary lives and are continually concerned about their children, job related issues, finances and all sorts of family matters. Even when Americans go to church (and this includes the Catholic Church) there are very few homilies about abortion, euthanasia and other social justice issues. There is reluctance on the part of priests to discuss these matters with a congregation that is very mixed and there are a lot of young children. There is also the fear of hurting people and causing them to fall away from the Church. Many of our Catholic High Schools and Colleges have done an absolutely superb job in raising the consciousness of their students to the significant moral issues of our time. In so many ways they have inspired their students to proclaim the Gospel of life with the tremendous enthusiasm of youth. In Catholic Colleges and in many secular schools there are all sorts of efforts to help the poor and marginalized. Some of our own parishioners have gone on mission trips to help people help themselves. They are to be commended. This is truly the work of Christ. We are at a particular point of crisis here in the United States. Within the space of a few decades the moral values of our nation have been overturned by a tsunami of attacks on moral values. We have come to be a nation where anything goes and is acceptable as long as it is opposed to Catholic teaching. This is particularly true in the area of life issues where the conscience of the country and even of Catholics is being dimmed by the continual assault on human life and the efforts made by government to force Catholic institutions to accept and participate in the absolute immorality of abortion and artificial contraception. Imagine the government fighting with the Little Sisters of the Poor and trying to get them to go along with insurance coverage for immoral procedures.

4 If there ever was a time when Catholics required backbone, that time is now. Catholic families need to be truly and thoroughly Catholic. The name Catholic means nothing if the values of Christ and the Church He founded are not lived The other night I went to dinner with a family I have known for many years. One of the daughters went to college in an excellent school with a Catholic name. One of her professors bashed the Church. The girl immediately stood up and vehemently disagreed. The teacher was so shocked that she dismissed the class. We need more kids and adults like that. Jesus is so proud of them. On the day of Judgment, He will welcome and thank those who fought for the sanctity of human life and the values of the Gospel. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald In today s reading, Joshua challenges the people to decide whom they will serve. Recalling God s faithfulness to them and to their ancestors, the people declare, We also will serve the Lord, for He is our God. We, too, must be mindful of God s gifts to us and renew our commitment to serve Him with grateful harts. STEWARDSHIP 08/17/14 $21,361 08/16/15 $21,620 (+1.21%) ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY COLLECTION 08/15/14 $ 6,987 08/15/15 $ 4,445 (Last year was a holy day of obligation) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. This weekend s second collection is for the Life Center of Long Island FEAST OF ST. AIDAN AND SPECIAL ST. AIDAN NOVENA A special Novena in honor of St. Aidan will begin on Saturday, August 22nd and will continue each morning after the 9:00 AM Mass until Monday, August 31st. All parishioners are invited to a Mass of celebration at 9:00 AM on the Feast of St. Aidan on Monday, August 31st.

5 LIFE CENTER OF LONG ISLAND COLLECTION Our pastor, Msgr. McDonald, has invited us to contribute to a second collection the weekend, August 22 nd & 23 rd, for the Life Center of Long Island. The Life Center runs four pregnancy care centers that help women and men in crisis situations to make healthy, life-affirming decisions for themselves and their pre born child. There are offices in Deer Park, Massapequa, Hempstead and Riverhead. Many generous people donate baby clothes, diapers, car seats and so many other items that a mother in need can use for her baby. The Life Center offers help for the woman who has chosen life for her child. The Center is supported entirely by donations and private contributors on Long Island. No doubt, this ministry continues through this generosity. You are invited to join in helping the Life Center continue its work. Please pray often, even daily, for God s blessing on the work of the Life Center. Thank you. FLOWER MEMORIALS In Loving Memory of ELLEN M. 8 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "It is when people forget God that tyrants forge their chains." Patrick Henry With the new school year will come more challenges to our children s religious freedom. Pledge of Allegiance Cases (2000-present): The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty has successfully defended the words, "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance in five court cases: 2004, U.S. Supreme Court; 2010 in California; 2010 in New Hampshire; 2014 in Mass.; 2015 in New Jersey. (becketfund.org) A N.J. high school senior, Samantha Jones, defeated atheist attacks that sought to strike "under God" from the Pledge. She described America as a country of many beliefs and claimed all of those beliefs - including those of atheists - are protected by "one nation under God." "Everyone has the right to remain silent but they don't have the right to silence everybody else." (christianpost.com, 2/9/15; fox news.com, 2/6/15) In a majority decision in 2004, Supreme Court Chief Justice Rehnquist wrote that the term "under God" does not endorse or establish religion but it actually asserts that the term merely acknowledges the nation's religious heritage, especially the role of religion for the Founding Fathers. The words "under God" were officially added to the Pledge in Congress wanted to explain America's disagreement with the Soviet Union about the nature of human rights. The Soviets claimed people receive their rights from the State, and therefore the State can take those rights away. In contrast, Congress said it was using the phrase "under God" to make clear that basic human rights are beyond the reach of the state. (newsmax.com, 8/9/15) Mark your Calendar: Thursday, September 10th, 7:30 PM, St. Patrick Church. 280 E Main St., Smithtown, NY 11787, in the church. Thomas Renker, General Counsel of Rockville Centre Diocese, will speak of threats we are facing to our religious freedoms. Come and learn more about how our religious freedoms are being undermined and how you can help to preserve them. Thursday, September 17th, "Constitution Day" is to be observed in all public schools which are mandated to provide educational programming on the history of the U.S. Constitution adopted on September 17, 1787

11 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA The Gospel for this Sunday is from John 6: As we are reading the past weeks from the 6th chapter, we find it is a sustained meditation on the meaning of the Mass and the Eucharist. Now John is writing about the promise of the Blessed Eucharist, which by then was, the Mass and Holy Communion, the essential act of Christian worship. We saw the disciples murmuring because they saw nothing in Christ but a man, and how they could accept his saying of eating his body and drink of his blood? Christ, most probable, had given them sufficient proofs that he was more than a man, but they refused to open their minds to accept Jesus words. Their minds were earth-bound and remain like that. Therein was their guilt. Faith is a gift of the Father, as Christ says to those disciples: No one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father. and the Father offered them this gift which they did not accept, there was their guilt. Who accepts Christ for what He is, the Son of God in human form has no difficulty in believing that He left to us, in the Eucharist, Himself as a sacrifice and a sacrament. Even if we cannot understand this gift of Christ in all its details it was an act of Divine power and as such beyond human comprehension; we can accept the Eucharist because we accept the words of Christ, who has the words of eternal life. In the faith that the Father gave to us we believe in His promise to give His Body and His Blood in the Eucharist to be our spiritual nourishment-communion to us. He gives to us the means of offering an absolute sacrifice to God every time the Eucharist is present at the altar, and now to his apostles successors, the power to repeat this act of Divine love Do this in memory of me. As the question to Peter- will you too go away? it was a question not only for the Apostles of that day but for all Christians: Lord to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Two thousand years the belief in the Blessed Eucharist as a sacrament is at the very center of our faith and so many martyrs gave and still give their lives in defense of this truth. Many of us may need to examine how effective use we make of that awesome gift. Every time we attend Mass do we realize that Christ is offering himself to His Father for our sanctification and of the whole world? Do we realize that through the minister at the altar, we are offering infinite thanksgiving, infinite adoration, to our Father in heaven? Are we worthy, are we fit to partake of this sacrifice in Holy Communion? Let s try to make ourselves less unworthy, not even the greatest saint was worthy to partake of this act of Divine Love! We have numerous new CDs in our kiosks this week, look and pick the ones the Spirit tells you to listen to and give them away to others who needs these teachings. God will bless your efforts.
