3 September 21, 2014 COMPASSION FOR THE INVALIDLY MARRIED They are everywhere every diocese, every parish in the world. They are people who have been divorced and remarried outside the Catholic Church. This is a growing concern for the Church in the midst of the divorce culture that is becoming more and more pervasive. Bishops and pastors want to help couples who cannot receive Holy Communion and have done so many things to try to help. Marriage tribunals have been expanded and more personnel have been added. Unfortunately, while this does make a difference, it only makes a small dent in the problem. For any number of reasons, people are reluctant to approach the Tribunal. Some worry that the process will bring back too many unpleasant memories. Others believe all sorts of myths about annulments that are simply lies. Right now there is an enormous amount of talk in the Church about the upcoming Synod on the Family that will be held in the Vatican in October. Speculation is running wild and there are countless opinions on what will be the outcome. This Synod has not been entered into lightly. All the bishops of the world were consulted and priests and laity were very welcome to express their opinions and concerns. One of the things that emerged from the consultation was that there is a vast divergence between what the Catholic Church teaches and what is the practice of ordinary Catholics. To put it bluntly: when it comes to marriage a lot of Catholics have their own ideas and pay little or no attention to the teaching of the Church. A theory that has received a tremendous amount of attention is that the Church should devise some way for the divorced and remarried to receive Holy Communion without any annulment. It is pointed out that the Orthodox Churches are able to accept such an arrangement and that the Catholic Church should imitate Christ in being merciful. The problem is that the teaching of Christ and the Church is that sacramental marriages are indissoluble not even the Pope Himself can dissolve them. Thus, if a divorced and remarried person has entered into a new union, the reality is that he or she is still married to the original partner. Christ is very clear about this. You only have to read St. Matthew 19: This is no mere theological development or the opinion of a group of theologians. It is a teaching proclaimed loudly and clearly in Sacred Scripture.

4 It is my guess that the Holy Father will make every effort to reach out and help the divorced and remarried. Perhaps he will make the annulment process simpler and easier. One thing is sure: he will listen carefully and attentively to the bishops and other participants in the synod and will take what they say very seriously. As your pastor I warmly encourage anyone who is in a situation in which he or she needs an annulment to see me. I will do everything I can to help you and have no worries if you cannot afford the fee. I am interested in your soul not your pocketbook. In the meanwhile, I ask you to pray for those who are in distressing marital problems. They are most worthy of our help, encouragement and concern. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. 8 September 21, 2014 Catechetical Sunday Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: The Readings of the Liturgy for Catechetical Sunday, celebrated this year in parishes throughout the country on September 21 st, erupt in an expression of God s mercy and forgiveness. His ways are not our ways, Isaiah reminds us in our first reading. We join our praise with the psalmist, humbled by the LORD whose kindness and compassion extend to all of his works. The great kindness of the LORD exceeds our imagination even as we proclaim the story told by Jesus in Matthew s gospel. Those who labor long and hard in the vineyard are paid for their labors no more than those who labor for a few hours. Think of it! God s mercy and forgiveness beyond measure, beyond human understanding, are given to us all who call upon Him. We are all the recipients of His mercy! We Catholics are privileged to enjoy the beauty of the Sacrament of Reconciliation which allows God s love and mercy to radiate in our moment of history. It is the passing on of an understanding of His forgiveness in our faith formation programs, as well as in all of the ministries which the Office of Faith Formation implements in our Diocese, which we celebrate today. On this Catechetical Sunday, we thank all of you who go into the vineyard proclaiming God s love and forgiveness in programs throughout the Diocese. May we all join together in praying for a rebirth and renewal of the Sacrament which makes God s mercy and forgiveness present in our lives, which allows us to Belong More Deeply to Him, and to each other. With my prayers and best wishes, I am Faithfully yours in Christ, Bishop of Rockville Centre PO Box 9023, Rockville Centre, New York telephone fax ww.drvc.org

12 Catholics for Freedom of Religion Preserving Freedom for All The following religious freedom victories are reported in the September Knights of Columbus Columbia magazine: Illinois pharmacist Luke Vander Bleek was being forced by the state to either provide morning after abortive drugs or close his pharmacy. After a 7 year court battle the Illinois Supreme Court ruled in his favor granting him and others the right to conscientious objection. Cyril Korte, small business owner, took exception to the Health and Human Services mandate to provide workers with contraceptive and abortive drugs. His case made its way to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals which ruled in his favor. This case provided precedent for the recent renowned U.S. Supreme Court Hobby Lobby decision giving family-owned businesses the right to not comply with the mandate if it violates their conscience. 77 year-old Eleanor Mc Cullen challenged Massachusetts state Buffer Law preventing side walk counselor to come within 35 feet women entering abortion clinics. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 9-0 in her favor saying the buffer zones burden substantially more speech than necessary. We need to continue with our prayers for the freedom to live our faith in the public square. Upcoming events: Tom Ranker, General Counsel of the Rockville Centre Diocese will be speaking at the following Parishes: September 22 nd Our Lady 0f Mercy, Hicksville at 7:30 PM September 24 th St. Matthew, Dix Hills at 7 PM Be sure and stop by the St. Aidan table at the Fair and pick up your Free to Speak booklet. 16 We have announced that our Parish has become a partner in a dynamic faith formation program called Symbolon. This program is designed to help our parish. Symbolon is an immersion in the faith for the whole parish and can be used both here at the parish and in our own homes. Participants in the program will receive instructions about the Word of God and the Catholic Faith, and it aims to tell us how we pray, how we think in union with Christ, how we live according to God s desires. As a member of our parish, you can access Symbolon anytime on the web using your computer, smartphone, or tablet, both here and at home. It is extremely important that we as Catholics not only know our Catholic Faith, but also bear witness to Christ in our daily lives, particularly in this time of the New Evangelization. We shall know more of what we believe and live it out more deeply, but also share it with others. We know it will be an invaluable resource for our parish in bringing you into a deeper communion with Jesus Christ and His Church, and I look forward to helping you navigate this new tool as we form disciples for the New Evangelization. I thank you in advance for your participation. LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA I would like to share with you what St. Paul wrote about the Mystery of the Trinity (a point we are studying in our Bible class). He tells us that we are incorporated into and we participate in the life of the ultimate family: the Trinitarian life of holy Church! And through that incorporation all things whether things in heaven and things on earth are to be united in Him, Jesus Christ! St. John Paul II also explains the Trinity Our God in His deepest mystery is not a solitude, but a family, since He has in himself Fatherhood, Sonship, and the essence of the family, which is love. Beautiful words, we may begin to see things from a different perspective. Although our human brains are incapable of coming to any sensible understanding of the reality of the love between Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I remember the story of St. Augustine coming across a young boy trying to empty the sea into a hole in the sand, You are wasting your time trying to fit the ocean in that little hole., the saint told the boy. The boy s response was Neither will you ever fathom the depth required to understand the truth of three Persons in one God. What a profound truth is hidden beneath this story! This week we have wonderful CDs in our kiosks; The Baseball Priest, Fr. B. Masters who shares the story of his days as a baseball player, and how he converted to Catholicism and eventually answered the call to become a priest. Meet Your Mother an introduction to Mary, Mark Miravalle covers most of the major teachings about the Mother of Jesus. He introduces and explores the truth about Mary that will renew your existing knowledge and love for the woman divinely appointed to bring Jesus into the world. Enjoy these talks about timeless ways to grow in holiness and bring the gift of faith to the people around you, who are away from Church. You will never know all the good you bring about! God Bless! Toti Conforti

17 SPREADING GOD S WORD VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2014 By Stephen Loewenthal Vacation Bible School was a huge success this summer! Vacation Bible School ran for two one week sessions from Monday, July 28 th to Friday, August 8 th. There were about 90 campers ranging from Pre-K through fifth grade enrolled in VBS each week. In addition, our first ever Counselor in Training or CIT program for sixth and seventh graders was a hit. We also had numerous high school and college age volunteers who supervised the activities at each station. Each day of VBS was packed with bible stories and videos, music, arts and crafts, prayer time, recreation and snack. The campers performed in a musical concert at the end of each week for their families. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped to make Vacation Bible School so much fun. In addition a special thank you to Seminarian John Luigi from Italy, Seminarian Michael Cassidy from Williston Park and Father Michael for organizing the Mass each week for the children at VBS and for helping at the various stations. They truly helped the children learn about God in a fun environment.
