February 22, 2015 FORGIVE SOMEONE There s a spectacular ad on Telecare. It is the shortest and most succinct sermon: Forgive someone. Your chance to play God. I can t say I would put it exactly the same way. I d probably say: Forgive someone and imitate God. All the same, the message is absolutely beautiful and hits right at the heart of the Gospel. And it really makes you think if there is someone you should get around to forgiving. Make no mistake about it. Forgiving is one of the most difficult things we human beings ever do. Often it makes us uncomfortable and it can even hurt. Look at a tough case. We have been hurt deeply by someone. Maybe a great sadness or unhappiness has been caused by a person we considered a close friend. We are really annoyed. And then we say the Our Father and that unforgettable phrase from Jesus sticks in our mind. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Those very words make us think. Sometimes we find there may be a little lacking in our Christianity. After all, we follow Christ and pray, but this forgiveness business is really tough. Yet, when we hear it we know Jesus means me and everybody else! There are no exceptions! I have to say that I think the society we live in is rather unforgiving. Recently in the news there have been two stories of well known celebrities who have made rather serious mistakes. If you listen to the radio, you hear commentators and pundits telling you over and over again what a mess these people made by their lies and bad judgment. The talking heads have a field day in criticizing and condemning. Sure these people were wrong and made tremendous errors in judgment. It seems, however, that people can t let these things go. I don t for a moment mean that we should condone wrong and/or immoral behavior. My point is that if God is willing to forgive, we should do the same.

Jesus is forgiveness and limitless mercy. His followers should be all about understanding and compassion. Every single time you forgive someone, you are acting exactly like Christ. And every time you do so, you show that your heart reflects the love of Jesus. If you can this Lent, go to daily Mass, fast and pray. And make sure you forgive someone. 6 our Lenten Journey The First Sunday of Lent Genesis 9: Peter 3:18-22 Mark 1:12-15 Here we are again, at the beginning of another Lenten journey. The Gospel for this first Sunday of Lent tells us, the Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. Do you find yourself in a sort of desert, tempted by the evils of the world? Scripture tells us that, later on, Jesus sought out the solitude of the desert, to pray and spend time listening to His Father. We should follow this example. Go to that place of solitude and listen to what the Spirit of God is telling you. Ask God to help you repent and live your life more in keeping with what Jesus teaches us. This Lent, instead of giving something up, why not decide to really change the way you live. Instead of giving up chocolate, make it a point to say a prayer for the neighbor or coworker who drives you crazy. Or give up prejudices and try to understand someone who is different than you. Give up that grudge you have with a family member and forgive whatever it is that s between you. Spending quiet time with the Scripture readings for each of the 40 days of Lent will give us some insight into how Jesus wants to help us change our lives. What a gift. The more time we spend with the Lord, listening in the solitude, the easier it will be to live as Jesus wants us to live. Repent and believe in the gospel.

Almsgiving in Lent During the Lenten Season we are asked to pray, fast and give alms. It is a perfect time for us to pray for those in need--whether it is for their material, emotional or spiritual need. And when you practice fasting and abstinence during these forty days, please remember those of our neighbors who are hungry, and consider sharing your gifts with them. One way to do this is by making a gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, which supports programs that help to feed people in our community each year through Catholic Charities and our Parishes. For more information about the Catholic Ministries Appeal, please visit or call (516) ext. 2. There are also materials available at the back of the Parish For you to review....he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich... (cf. 2 Cor 8:9)

Dear Parishioners, In this special season of Lent, the Catholic Ministries Appeal gives each of us an opportunity to join together to support the charitable work of our Church. As Pope Francis; reminds us " We are called to confront the poverty of our brothers and sisters, to touch it, to make it our own and to take practical steps to alleviate it." Supporting the Catholic Ministries Appeal gives us a real opportunity to alleviate the pain and suffering of so many in our community. People like Kathy and her daughter who lost their way after physical illness and anguish over uncontrollable family circumstances. Living without permanent housing for more than seven years, Kathy and her daughter lived the majority of the time in their car. Feeling ashamed and isolated, one night they chose to park in the lot of one of our East End parishes where they felt safer during the cold winter nights. The Parish Outreach, hearing of their plight, offered them food and sanctuary and most of all a compassionate person to talk to. The Outreach contacted Catholic Charities who worked with Kathy and her daughter to help them to secure permanent housing. When they were at their lowest point, our Church, because of your support of the programs and ministries of the Catholic Ministries Appeal, gave them the help they so desperately needed. They gave us hope and a new start to our lives, a home that we never thought we would ever have again. shared Kathy. This Lent, I invite you to reflect of the words of our Holy Father to confront the poverty of our brothers and sisters, like Kathy and her daughter, by making a gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal. May God bless you with many graces during this holy season of Lent. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. Mc Donald

CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION There are more Christian martyrs today than in the early days of Christianity" Pope Francis ( Please don t forget us! From Cardinal Dolan s blog, Jan. 30, 2015: Referring to the millions who marched to protest the savage murders in Paris, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama, a brave, sincere, and beloved pastor, who has seen hundreds of his churches, healthcare clinics, and schools burned to the ground, and, dreadfully worse, hundreds of his good, decent, peaceful people cut to shreds by the machetes and machine guns of the Islamic radicals of Boko Haram, also begged, But, please don t forget us! Where are the marchers in Europe and North America condemning the continued massacres of religious minorities, especially Christians, in Africa, (and, he might have added, in the Mideast and Asia)? His plea, Please don t forget us, wakes me up at night, dominates my prayers, and prompts my advocacy. Can I ask you to listen to him as well? "Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act." (Dietrich Bonhoeffer, German Lutheran pastor & theologian, executed 1945) Lord, the plight of our brothers and sisters is deep and the suffering of Christians is severe and frightening. By your grace, we commit to do all our power to preserve religious liberty so that all may serve you freely and openly. Amen SUNDAY, MARCH 15TH, 10:30 AM MASS 25TH ANNUAL BRUNCH AT THE LUCKY DUCK RESTAURANT Cost is $30.00 each. Please make checks payable to JCDA. Reservations must be in by March 7th. 12 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Are we ready to take a fresh look at Lent? To move beyond the typical giving something up and embrace new ideas with deeper spiritual meanings. This is the first Sunday of Lent when we read about the temptations of Christ: Commit to a daily time of QUIET PRAYER. Don t do all the talking, listen to God the first 10 minutes and thank Him for everything you are grateful for before you ask for anything! Go to daily Mass. If that is impossible, try to go on Friday as well as Sunday. Pray one psalm per day. Incorporate a work of mercy this Lent. Spend thirty minutes in Eucharistic Adoration during the week. Are we ready to allow the Holy Spirit to lead us in the way God wants to strengthen us to follow His Will for our life? In today s gospel we learn that after Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit during His baptism in the Jordan he went into the wilderness, a place of solitude and silence, to be alone for forty days; following the pattern which God set for Moses and Elijah. At the end of the forty days one visitor came out to tempt Him. Satan, the father of lies, knowing that Jesus was going to embark on His mission for the Kingdom and that He was in a weakened condition, undoubtedly he thought he could persuade Jesus to choose His own path rather than the path His Father had chosen for Him. This is the fundamental temptation which confronts each one of us as well. My way or God s way, my will or God s will. Let s meditate on today s Gospel. The Lord gives grace to those who acknowledge their dependence on Him and have the courage to reject the deceits of Satan. Lord Jesus, your word is life and joy for me. Fill me with the Holy Spirit that I may have the strength to embrace your will in all things and renounce what is contrary to it. We have in the parish kiosks all and many CDs appropriate for Lent. Please look for them and after listening to them pass them along to the many people that could beneficiate from their teachings. Nothing more important that help the Lord to reach souls. Have a wonderful Lent. Toti Conforti

PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY As Pope Benedict XVI said in his Encyclical, Deus Caritas Est, Everything has its origin in God's love, everything is shaped by it, everything is directed towards it. Love is God's greatest gift to humanity; it is his promise and our hope. FOOD PANTRY: If you missed our monthly food drive, you can still donate. Please bring all non-perishable food and personal hygiene items to the back of Church or across the street to the Parish Social Ministry Office. We also have a refrigerator for eggs, dairy products, sliced bread and a freezer for ground beef, chicken cutlets and frozen pizzas. ITEMS OF THE WEEK: Tomato Sauce (Jars), Snacks and Coffee. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Our Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at 9:45 AM in the Peter and Paul Room of the Finamore Center to knit or crochet prayer shawls or lap blankets for our sick and homebound parishioners. New members are always welcome. You need not know how to knit or crochet. We have talented parishioners who can teach you. The next meeting will take place on Monday, February 23rd. If you have some wool to donate to this ministry, please bring it to the Parish Social Ministry Office. Please call our office if you would like to receive a blessed prayer shawl or if you know of someone who would like one. If you have any questions, please call Parish Social Ministry (516) x9410. The only feelings that do not heal are the ones you hide. Henri Nouwen PLEASE NOTE: The Parish Social Ministry Office is open Monday- Friday, 9:00 AM- 3:00 PM. Please use the Finamore Parish Center entrance (across from the church on Willis Avenue).
