3 October 13, 2013 THIS PAST WEEK This past week (only a few days ago) the New York Times had several significant articles on life issues and the problems we face as Catholics as we work together in the pro- life cause. The first two were good news and bad news while the third was more than a little disturbing. The first told us that the current governor of Ohio is very much committed to the protection of unborn human life and that Ohio has passed restrictive abortion legislation. On the other hand, the second article tells us that the governor of California (a former Jesuit seminarian the article did not mention that I am) recently signed legislation that made abortion even easier than it was. In California you do not even need to be a doctor to perform an abortion! Imagine that! The third article really disturbed me. It concerned a Catholic University in California that is facing a very serious question: whether or not the health plan for faculty and staff should get rid of coverage for elective abortions. This evidently means that for some time a Catholic institution has been willing to pay for abortion. The article says that the debate about this issue threatens to tear the university apart. The reality, of course, is that this particular university built by Catholics to preach the Gospel, instill Catholic values and offer a great intellectual experience, has lost a great deal of its Catholic identity. The sad truth is that it is not the only one and there is no guarantee that in some Catholic colleges things will not be taught and promoted that are directly opposed to the teaching of Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. Some may feel that my criticism of such Catholic institutions is unfair because they are after all academia and that means you can teach what you want and blatantly defy the teachings of God in your health care plans. I vehemently disagree. If you stop to think about it, Jesus was quite direct and to the point in his teaching. He allowed no compromise on the moral law and was more than outspoken in giving His opinion. Listen to this: If anyone is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. (Mk 8: 38) There are not separate rules for ordinary Catholics, for politicians or for academicians. God is no respecter of persons. This is Respect Life and our Bishops urge us to promote the Gospel of life consistently. The Catholic Church cannot waver in its insistence on the sacredness
4 of every human life. Pope Francis, in September, spoke to some gynecologists and said this: Every unborn child, condemned unjustly to being aborted, has the face of the Lord, who before being born, and then when he was just born, experienced the rejection of the world. And every elderly person, even if he/she is sick or at the end of his/her days, bears in himself/herself the face of Christ. They cannot be discarded! I think you will agree that is pretty strong language. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER The month of October, dedicated to the Holy Rosary, is a wonderful opportunity to become reacquainted with this important devotion! St. Jose Marie Escriva wrote if you say the Holy Rosary every day with spirit of faith and love, Our Lady will make sure she leads you very far along her Son s path! Devotion to Mary, along with the Eucharist, is the most powerful anchor that will guide us on the path to heaven. It will compel us to practice charity, between our family and our friends. Make a commitment to pray the Holy Rosary with your children and offer it for an increase in priestly vocations. Share your reactions and feedback at pastoralcouncil@staidanparish.org or call (516) x9592. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish. Jesus healed ten lepers in today s Gospel. Only one (10%) came back to say thank you. I, too, have received many blessings from the Lord indeed, all I am and all I have is a gift! How often have I remembered to thank Him? STEWARDSHIP COLLECTION 10/07/12 $26,384 10/06/13 $26,849 (+1.76%) RESPECT LIFE COLLECTION 10/07/12 $ 5,339 10/06/13 $ 5,535 (+3.67%) Next weekend s second collection is for World Mission Sunday Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish!
5 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Do you know what you want out of your life? Have you reflected on this question extensively? After all, if you do not know where you are going, you are lost. By clearly defining what I want, I can map my goal, my mission. The details of our individual missions may vary, but the end goal is the same, to become the saints God created us to be. Imagine how life would change if everything we did was helping us to become the person God created us to be, and the influence we will have on the people around us? Christ gave us the power to overcome sin. He tells us Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:48) It is a challenge, but we can make the decision to say YES to our mission and to say NO to the many cultural influences that threaten this mission. This week we have CDs of great interest. St. Joseph: Patron of the Universal Church by Dr. Miravalle. The holy and hidden figure of St. Joseph comes to light in this talk. Heroic Witnesses by Sister Maria Stella, a missionary in Russia, speaks about the history of Catholic priests, sisters and the laity in Russia from 1917 to the present. The persecution and almost destruction of the Catholic Church and the efforts to revive it now. Counting your Blessings by Dr. Scott Hahn. He explains the essential teachings regarding the practice of Catholic family life based on the image of the Blessed Trinity, and all that is needed to create a loving family life. Once again listen to these talks and pass them on to others that need to hear them. You will be reaching souls and saving souls is the ultimate mission we can accomplish. 6 WORLD MISSION SUNDAY Next Sunday, October 19th/20th, is World Mission Sunday, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, calls every Catholic to celebrate at the Eucharist, our vocation to be missionary and to help the Missions. As Catholics around the world, here at home and in the Missions, gather at the Eucharistic table, let us pray for the Church s worldwide mission and offer financial help through the Propagation of the Faith for more than 1,150 dioceses in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands. Thank you for your generosity. Please make all checks payable to THE PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH. WE RE FIGHTING BACK, INC. We re Fighting Back, Inc. is a family run charitable organization dedicated to the pursuit of education, awareness, treatment and an ultimate cure for breast cancer. Ten thousand dollars a year are donated to the American Cancer Society s Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraiser at Jones Beach, Long Island, New York which is held yearly in October. The Organization also donates to local families in need who are fighting this disease. Four mortgages and some monthly bills were paid this year in order to allow the victims of this disease to spend their energies on fighting the disease itself and not worry about bills. The strength of this organization is derived through our love for each other, through what we have learned during our own battles, and through the memories of those who have survived the battle, but most especially of those who have lost the fight against breast cancer. We re Fighting Back, Inc. wants to help you fight so that no one will ever have to fight alone. Please contact the Social Ministry office if you, or someone you know, are in need of our assistance. We re Fighting Back, Inc. will be outside church this weekend, October 12th/13th, selling baked goods to raise funds to continue the fight. Please stop by and support this worthy cause.

10 An Invitation to Consecrate oneself to Jesus through Mary This is an open invitation to all Catholics who love Mary. Our glorious Queen and Immaculate Mother. She has been assumed body and soul into heaven and continues to watch over each of us from eternity. By making this consecration to Mary, you are placing yourself in her hands; she will help you to become a true follower of Christ. Do not be afraid, she loves you. Remember her words to St. Juan Diego of Guadalupe? I am not here who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Are you not in the crossing of my arms? Consecration Explained: Total Consecration is an absolutely beautiful exercise to increase our spirituality, helps us grow in holiness and increase our faith, and to grow closer to Jesus. It consists of a 33-day period of preparation, done at home for minutes of prayer and meditation using the book 33 Days to Morning Glory. The participants will meet once a week, on Fridays, for six weeks, for fellowship. We will have one meeting in the morning at 10:00 AM and one in the evening at 7.30 PM, whichever is more convenient for you. Then November 21 st, the Feast of the Presentation, we will have a Mass to Consecrate ourselves to Mary. This program will also help you to come to a clear understanding of the role of Mary and how she helps us to have a closer union with Jesus and to renew our Baptismal commitment while we live out our personal Consecration. Our late Pope, John Paul II, made Marian consecration a hallmark of his papacy. His motto Totus Tuus (totally yours) reflected his personal consecration to Mary! We strongly encourage all of you to consider signing up for this program, which would deepen your relationship with Mary and her Son, Jesus, a transforming path to holiness!! If you are interested, contact Toti Conforti with questions at (516) or toticon@aol.com. NOTE: PLEASE CALL AFTER OCTOBER 15TH IF YOU ARE INTERESTED TOTI WILL BE AWAY.
